Spring Thing Bazaar Scheduled BY ANN MEAD ASH

fter a year off in observance of COVID-19 restrictions and concern for the safety of local residents, the St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC) Spring Thing Bazaar will return in May. This year’s event will be a two-day festival, which combines a chicken barbecue with a yard sale, a vendor sale, haircuts, an activity for children, and food. The 2021 Spring Thing will be held on Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15, at the church, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz. On May 14, the event will open at 8 a.m., and on May 15, it will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Up to 40 yard sale, craft, and home business vendors will line the church parking lot, with a car parked between each vendor space. Granny’s Attic, which will feature donated items, will be open throughout the event. “(Granny’s Attic) is a flea market,” said pastor James Haun. Jane Markert, who is co-chairing this year’s bazaar with Amy Adams, noted that Granny’s Attic will feature some

Tickets for the barbecue meal may be purchased in advance at the church office and on Saturday until sold out. Readers who have questions about the tickets or the bazaar may call the office at 717-626-7100. The Spring Thing Café will give visitors a place to sit and eat. Pretzels for the event will be provided by Lititz Mayor Tim Snyder, and chips will be provided by Diffenbach’s. A coloring contest for children, to

be held only on May 15, is being organized by church member Timmy Otter. Hay rides will be offered on May 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Haun, who is a certified barber, will give haircuts, along with church member Mary Kay Garner, who is a licensed hairdresser. Each year, the two team up to provide cuts and trims by donation during the event. Live music at the bazaar will be provided by Clyde Spangler, who will play his electric guitar. Organizers reported that Spangler is known for playing upbeat Christian music. Some of the funds raised by the Spring Thing are used to help members of the community. This year, organizers will donate a percentage either to a family in need or to a local organization. Markert noted that to keep the event safe for all who attend, visitors are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing. Pastor James Haun (left) and Jane Markert are looking forward to holding the Spring Thing Bazaar at St. Luke’s Church, Lititz, on May 14 and 15.

14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Organizers of the Mount Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church mortgage burning service are looking forward to all the things they will be celebrating when the event is held at the church on Sunday, May 2. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with a multimedia presentation that will trace the congregation to its beginnings on East King Street in Lancaster. “It’s a celebration of our history,” said Nancy Marshall, who was born into the church and met her future husband there in Sunday school. In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to

serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area

in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. Hometown Heroes To Hear The Bells BY COURTNEY MENGEL

East Petersburg Mayor James Malone noted that Sunday, May 2, has been proclaimed Bells Across Pennsylvania Day. On May 2, at 7 p.m., residents, businesses, and churches will be

encouraged to ring bells for three minutes in a solid chorus of statewide support for the Pennsylvanians who put themselves in harm’s way to serve the public during the pandemic. Elected officials across the commonwealth have

joined together to promote the second annual Bells Across Pennsylvania Day to show gratitude for their hometown heroes. On March 6, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a statewide disaster emergency was issued. In every municipality, essential service providers have continued their work at the expense of themselves and their families to serve the general public. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, more than 1 million Pennsylvanians have contracted COVID-19 and over 25,000 residents have died from the virus. “The Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association held the event last year as a way to say thank you to everyone from nurses to police to firemen to grocery store workers,” said Malone. “I’m in information technology and I’m designated

as an essential service provider, but I don’t typically have to interact with others. People working on the front lines don’t have that opportunity.” Malone said he views this event as an opportunity to promote social interaction. “Across the nation, people have fallen into the mentality of not interacting with anyone, and that’s not good,” he said. “This gives everyone a chance to realize we’re all in this together.” Event planning will be local. Malone encourages each municipality to determine whom they want to honor, how they want to honor them, and where they want to honor them. “ We know that these workers are struggling and taking risks to help others,” stated Malone. “These people are the reason we’re still functioning as well as we are.”

Lancaster Sunrise Rotary members who took part in the last fundraising ride the club held, in 2019, included (from left) Clayton Dickerson, Jeff George, Rick Dickerson, and Steve Bareuther. The 2021 ride will take place on May 8. BY ANN MEAD ASH

The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary has planned its 17th annual bicycle ride for 2021, dubbing it the Ride for the Community. Club member Steve Bareuther noted that in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions, the 2020 ride was postponed and then finally canceled, but this year, the ride is set to go live. This year’s Ride for the Community will be held at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, May 8, with rolling starts beginning at 7 a.m. Riders must register and checkin between 7 and 9 a.m. The event will follow Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines, and it will be held rain or shine. Formerly called the Literacy Ride, the event was renamed to better reflect the many community organizations that benefit. The ride is designed to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts at a variety of riding levels, so the club offers four routes - a 10mile family ride; a 21-mile ride through scenic countryside; a 43mile ride showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges; and a metric century ride of 100 kilometers, equivalent to approximately 62 miles. Metric century riders must depart by 8 a.m. On this course, an optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered near Fairmount in Ephrata. Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. Cue sheets, SAG support, sports beverages, snacks, lunch, and comfort stations will also be provided to registered riders. Since 2018, the Rotary Club has partnered with The Common Wheel, an organization that works to encourage a culture of biking for transportation as well as recreation.

The park became a drop-off location, with club members accepting quality, gently used bikes throughout the ride. This year, the partnership will continue, and riders and nonriders are invited to donate bikes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com. This year, a Shred Event Fundraiser will be held in the park from 9 to 11 a.m. in conjunction with the ride. Bareuther said that this is an opportunity for community members to clean out their basements and file cabinets and make a donation to the club at the same time. Club president Bill Weik noted that shredding by Marco Technologies will happen on site and that 100% of the donation will go to the club. Beginning in 2019, the club offered a more inclusive sponsorship package for local businesses and individuals involving both the club’s Literacy Ride and the car show that members hold in the Neffsville Park each September. Through fundraisers, the club supports a number of local organizations. Weik noted that recent contributions have included scholarships for Manheim Township students, grants to United Disability Services, and funding for the Lancaster Early Education Center playground area. Those who would like to register to take part in the bicycle ride may do so by searching for “Rotary Ride for the Community 2021” at www.active.com. Questions may be directed to Bareuther at sbareuther@msn.com. Sunrise Rotary welcomes new members. Friendship Fest Returns BY ANN MEAD ASH

to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing

will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.” To date, the EPC Golf Outing has raised more than $100,000 for charity. Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, visit www.epcgolfouting .com. “We will have different things this year, along with things folks are used to as well,” said Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community. “We decided this year’s theme is ‘Same Run. Different Fun.’” The run Link spoke of is the annual 5K that has been part of the annual Friendship Fest and 5K since 2017. In 2020, the 5K alone was held in September, but this year, the 5K and the Fest will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 8, beginning at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Registration for the 5K is open at www.friendship community.net. Registration will also be available on site on the day of the event. Free T-shirts will be given to participants while supplies last. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a plant tent will offer a variety of spring flowers, perennials, and hanging baskets for sale. Both cash and a limited-contact card payment option will be available. Link reported that local greenhouses have partnered with Friendship to donate items for sale. In a second tent, also open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friendship Heart Gallery will offer some artwork for sale, including items from the Primitives by Cathy collection. Among these will be water bottles and blocks that sit on shelves and bear the work of a Friendship artist and sometimes inspirational messages. “(Primitives by Cathy) takes Friendship artwork and puts it on home décor pieces,” said Link, who

noted that coasters and notebooks will be among the pieces for sale. “It’s not just a gift; it’s a gift with purpose and meaning,” said Link, who noted that a portion of the sale will go back to the gallery. She said both the plants and the artwork make great Mother’s Day gifts. Link said that she hopes some individuals who are served by Friendship Community will be at the Fest. “Doran has been at previous Fests,” she said. Doran, who is legally blind, is known for the woven potholders he sells by donation. “It’s a craft he loves to do, and he donates proceeds back to Friendship,” said Link, who added that the potholders can be used as hotpads and coasters, and that each is colorful and distinctive. “It’s art and function (together),” she noted. Another individual who may attend is Josh Doughty, who fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing a book along with his home-based services team member, Dave, who meets with him regularly. “They’re buddies,” said Link, who explained that Dave encouraged Josh in the writing process. Josh will bring copies of “Josh’s Journey … With Family, Friends & God” to the Fest. A drive-through chicken barbecue

will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of this year’s Fest. Both individual half-chickens and chicken meals will be sold. Meals will include a halfchicken, applesauce, chips, a roll with butter, and a beverage. Chicken may be purchased by car or as a walk-up.

There will be no seating area. Link said organizers are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community in a new way. “It will be a fun day at Friendship Community. We are excited to see the smiles behind the masks,” she said.

Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy Scheduled For Mother’s Day BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post every-

thing also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drivethrough chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wishconvoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.” People are invited to cheer the

convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl.com /u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.” This is the second time the event

will begin at the Manheim Auto Auction. Last year’s event was a scaled-down convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-AWish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with lifethreatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the

For 90-year-old Barbara Mayo, the pandemic not only brought isolation from family members, but it also forced a separation between Barbara and her husband of 67 years, Devere. After having a stroke, Devere went to a rehab facility, but soon Barbara found she couldn’t visit him due to restrictions. “It was terrible,” she said, noting that she could only see Devere through a window. “He was very, very lonely and we watched (him) simply deteriorate. I felt like my world was collapsing.” Barbara prayed that an opportunity would open for the couple to move somewhere together, and she soon learned about Mount Hope, which focuses on keeping couples together if at all possible. Devere and Barbara spent five months together at Mount Hope before he passed away in January. Barbara wasn’t sure how she’d get through the days without Devere, but she now has a roommate, Marlene Campbell, with whom she prays, sings and socializes. “She is an inspiration,” Barbara said. “The days seemed long after Devere’s death. I sat on the edge of my bed and thought, ‘Is this all I’m going to do?’ Then they

The Lititz Historical Foundation and the Lititz Garden Club will hold a plant exchange behind the historical foundation museum (left photo) in the Mary Oehme Gardens (right photo) on May 2.

The last Lititz Historical Foundation, in partnership with the Lititz Garden Club, have scheduled the spring plant exchange for Sunday, May 2, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The event, which will be held rain or shine, will take place, appropriately, in the Mary Oehme Gardens, located behind the foundation’s museum building at 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz.

Full-Service LANDSCAPING • Mowing • Mulching • Trimming • Seasonal Cleanup • Snow Plowing & Salting & MORE!

According to Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation, the exchange has been a tradition in Lititz for at least 25 years, but the partnership with the garden club does not go back quite that far. The exchange is limited to perennials. Each plant must be marked with an identification tag and placed in a container for easy transportation.

Upon arrival, each plant owner will receive a ticket for each plant he or she brings. Plants will be categorized by sun, shade, exotic, bulbs, herbs, and ground cover. Tickets may be redeemed for another plant after all plants have been placed in categories and attendees have had sufficient time to explore the categories. For the safety of all, organizers request that attendees wear masks

during the event and practice social distancing from others while on the museum grounds. Free parking will be available along Main Street. Readers who would like more information about the historical society may visit https://lititzhistorical foundation.com or search for “Lititz Historical Foundation” on Facebook. Individuals with questions may call 717-627-4636.

Ephrata Cloister To Reopen The Historic Ephrata Cloister will again welcome visitors beginning on Friday, April 30, with reduced hours of operation and limited capacity continuing during the initial phase of reopening. Adjustments to operations at the historic site have been made to provide a safe environment for visitors, volunteers, and staff. Visitors can explore the remains of this unique American community on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Limited capacity tours of the main historic buildings will be offered by appointment only. To schedule a tour, call 717-733-6600. Face coverings will be required of all visitors, volunteers, and staff inside all the site’s structures, and social distancing will be observed throughout the property. Everyone is asked to begin their visit by washing their hands, and hand sanitizer will be available at the site. A regular schedule of cleaning and sanitizing of high-touch surfaces, including sales counters and restrooms, will be followed throughout the day. No events, group gatherings, or large group tours are scheduled for the near future as volunteers and staff continue to make modifications to daily operations during the early period of business after reopening.

During the year that this historic site has been closed, many visitors have enjoyed walking the historic ground at no cost. Beginning April 30, admission to the grounds and historic buildings will again be charged during open hours for access to the site for touring and photography, just as had been the case before the closure. Access to the historic site is always free to current members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates, the nonprofit group that supports the activities and operates the museum store at Ephrata Cloister. The museum store will also be open when the site is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The Virtual Ephrata Academy programs, held on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., will continue, along with virtual school programs. Virtual Homeschool Days are scheduled for Sunday, May 16. Details about these programs, information about becoming a member of the Ephrata Cloister Associates, and updates on reopening can be found at www.EphrataCloister.org. Historic Ephrata Cloister is one of the sites on the Pennsylvania Trails of History administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates.

I believe that there is much to be learned through gardening, especially when the gardener is a child. Patience, responsibility, preparedness, diligence, and caring are qualities that can be cultivated when a child actively nurtures a plant from seed to harvest. For as long as I can remember, weeding has been a part of my life. When my siblings and I were kids, we’d jump on a trailer pulled by our father’s riding mower to our half-acre garden a mile down the road. Pulling weeds was a chore that was only made bearable by the occasional ripe tomato, pepper, or bean that I ate fresh from the stalk. These days, other than some herbs and tomatoes, the garden in my tiny backyard is filled with pollinator-friendly plants. When my first grandchild was just a toddler, I decided to set aside a corner of my yard as a special place where he could explore and play, all while learning about taking care of a garden. Little by little, a gnome village took root. Under the maple tree, we planted shade-loving ferns, hosta, and black-eyed Susan. We grew goldenstar, bugleweed, and creeping phlox, all forms of ground cover that could withstand the trample of little feet. Together we created a magical world that set the foundation for a love of nature and gardening. Since then, three more

grandchildren have brought their ideas and creativity to Gnome Village. Every April, we do our spring cleanup, where the kids pick up sticks and twigs, rake leaves, and repair the tiny structures in this otherworldly spot in our backyard. The sense of ownership they have for this 50square-foot plot of land is remarkable. All four grandkids look forward to helping out in my garden, too. Mulching, staking tomatoes in large planters, and planting new flowers are among the tasks they enjoy. I always add a few new annuals in the spring to infuse more color until the summer perennial blooms arrive. A trip to the local garden center to allow the kids to help choose the annuals is always fun. Once the bee balm, coneflowers, salvia, Taking care of their own tools and lavender, coreopsis, and cosmos begin to bloom gloves adds to the responsibility of and the bees and butterflies abound, I’m affordyoung gardeners like Beckett. ed the perfect opportunity to educate my young gardeners about the importance of planting pollinator-friendly flowers. The most rewarding part of the entire cycle of growth is when the garden is in full bloom and the kids create a pretty bouquet to give to someone special or when they pick a tomato off the vine and enjoy the burst of flavor that they helped create. Last summer we made a delicious Margherita pizza with fresh basil and tomatoes from the garden. My youngest grandchildren are 6-year-old twins. I may have a couple more years before Gnome Village no longer holds their imagination, but the seeds sown in the tiny plot of ground under Planting annuals to add color to the the maple tree are summer perennials not yet in bloom likely to grow in ways is a favorite task for 9-year-old never imagined.
