OLLHFH is seeking to open new doors
ne of humans’ four basic needs for survival, shelter is more than a means of keeping rain off our backs, wind off our necks and sun out of our eyes. Houses become homes because they provide stability, they foster growth, they allow us to lead better lives.
Born out of necessity, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity (LLHFH) has been providing housing for Lancaster County residents for 38 years. Now the affordable housing organization is introducing a new program intended to expand its footprint in the county and beyond.
“Homeownership is a game changer for families,” said Amy Balestier, LLHFH’s vice president of development and communications. “When they can build wealth, (homeowners) can build their own brighter futures. When you’re living paycheck to paycheck, that isn’t possible. What we have found is that when
people own their homes, their children are more likely to go on to college or own their own homes. In essence, we’re helping to fund the future. It doesn’t stop with one Habitat home. There are a lot of success stories.”
LLHFH has launched an ambitious $4 million campaign called Open Doors, which is designed to address the ongoing shortage of affordable housing. LLHFH has already raised the first $3.2 million toward its goal and is seeking to garner the rest through appeals, public and private donations and special events.
“A safe, dry, warm and affordable home offers a family a new chapter in life and the opportunity to build a brighter future,” said Andrew Szalay, LLHFH’s CEO and president. “Open Doors is an important path to Habitat’s capacity to make a bigger impact on our local housing needs. Maybe you’re a low-income renter and you want to be part of the American Dream. You may not have a
security deposit (to rent a home), much less a down payment (to purchase a house). It’s a mountain to climb. It’s almost out of the question for some families.
But it’s something that Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity is overcoming.”
With the money it raises, LLHFH hopes to provide 30 houses, either
through new construction or the renovation of existing structures, to first-time home buyers by 2026. The constructions currently being considered are located in the city
BY JEFF FALKIt is not a fling. But it is a thing. And the best time to pull off things is in the spring.
St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC) is bringing back its Spring Thing for another swing. It’s a fellowship event through and through, one that celebrates community, the time of year and what it means to be from Lititz.
“We had a brainstorming meeting to come up with a name for our spring bazaar,” said Jane
Markert, the organizer of St. Luke’s UCC’s Spring Thing. “We all kind of decided, ‘Let’s give it a unique name.’ We came up with ‘Spring Thing,’ and green is our color.”
This year’s edition of Spring Thing, the 14th, will take place on Saturday, May 4, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s UCC, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz. It’s an outdoor bazaar that’s free.
“I want people to have a good time,” said Markert. “I want them to see that people can be kind to
BY JEFF FALKGeographically, it’s a 9-mile northwest move. Developmentally, it’s a move in a different direction. Eastern Mennonite University at Lancaster (EMU at Lancaster) is on the move. In two months, the private liberal arts university based in Harrisonburg, Va., will officially relocate its Lancaster campus from East Lampeter Township to Warwick Township.
“It will provide more modern space for our students,” said Christine Sharp, EMU at Lancaster’s executive director. “The common space is large and open. We’ll be closer to the (Lancaster) airport.”
Located within the Greenfield Corporate Center at 1846 Charter
Lane, Suite 212, Lancaster, for the last 30 years, EMU at Lancaster is moving its four classrooms to the Listrak building

at 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz, in time for summer classes to begin July 1. The move will provide EMU at Lancaster with an additional 5,000 square feet for classrooms, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training laboratory, student advisory areas, a cafeteria and coffee bar, ample parking and outdoor space.
EMU at Lancaster executed a multiyear lease and plans to perform some minor upgrades to the property’s infrastructure, information technology and communications.
“We take pride in our sense of community and serving our community, whether it’s through credited or non-credited courses,” said Sharp.
“Our mission in Lancaster is to provide programs that aren’t available in other sectors. Our vision is to serve our students with high-quality education. Our goal is to have a building that’s welcoming to students and instructors. We’re moving to a stateof-the-art building.”
“Like many commercial landlords, we have re-evaluated our physical properties and have determined that we do not need the entire 93,000 square feet of our headquarters building,” said Ross Kramer, Listrak’s CEO. “As strong supporters of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), we felt that EMU at Lancaster would be a great fit and believe the new space will provide a learning environment conducive to students’ academic and professional growth.”
EMU at Lancaster’s current enrollment is over 400 students, but
from pg 1
many attend through online courses. When the university opens its Warwick Township location, nearly 100 students are expected to attend weekly.
“The needs of today’s workforce are constantly changing,” said Sharp. “EMU at Lancaster is committed to providing postsecondary education and professional development training that offers students a competitive advantage. Our mission is to ensure that those who complete our programs are well prepared to make valuable contributions to the workforce and communities.”
Eastern Mennonite University first established its local campus at a temporary location in Lancaster in 1996 before moving to Greenfield Corporate Center in 2002.
In addition to its CNA program, EMU at Lancaster offers a bachelor’s degree in leadership and organizational management, with an aviation concentration. The university plans to add a drone technology education program this fall.
“We want to graduate students who are forward-thinking and life citizens,” said Sharp. “We want our students to have a global understanding. Our goal is to raise strong leaders with compassion, not only in their lives but also their professional lives. We’re here to provide a pathway to students who may not have thought of education before.”

one another and that they can communicate with each other and enjoy Lititz. All the money is going to good causes. It gives our church an opportunity to do good things for the community.”
“What people are supporting is our church’s activities, which goes back to the community,” continued Markert. “People come back. We see old friends. People enjoy the happy atmosphere. It’s just a great day.”
Spring Thing will feature 48 vendors selling crafts, small business items and yard sale items, and among the food offerings available will be chicken barbecue dinners, egg

croissants, hot dogs, pies, brownies, cookies, coffee, tea and cold drinks. The bazaar will feature guitarist Clyde Spangler, hay wagon rides, children’s activities like face painting and a dime toss, other games, hair cutting for women and more.
“The main goal is to do something for the community,” said Markert. “We try to do a lot of things that involve the community. The point is to be there for people. We try to make it as much fun as possible.”
Markert is seeking to draw several hundred people to Spring Thing, and she is hoping to raise about $5,000 from the event. Ten percent of the
proceeds will go to the Warwick Hub, while the rest of the funds will be used for St. Luke’s philanthropic activities like its Lunch with Luke free noon meal program, vacation Bible school and mission trips.
“If there’s a need out there,” said Markert, “we try to supply it.”
St. Luke’s UCC members, along with their friends and families, volunteer their time to make Spring Thing a success. There’s a certain sense of satisfaction that comes from pulling together to reach a common goal.
“It’s really a togetherness thing for the people of our church,” said Markert. “It’s our church family and

“We’re both the builder and the lender, so we can work on the finances to get people into these houses,” said Szalay. “How did we get here? Our population has grown, and our sophistication has grown, and the costs of houses have risen over the years. It’s become more profitable to build bigger houses. We’re here to empower first-time home buyers.”
From a total of 115 applicants, LLHFH is currently serving 22 locals interested in affordable housing.
“They’re the fabric of our community,” said Balestier. “They’re helping make our community run, but they can’t afford to live here. Many are coming from a rent situation and can’t afford to continue to rent. We have applicants who are single. Most are families with children who are looking
