MDS Coordinates Mask Effort In early April, when Larry Stoner, Region 1 operations coordinator with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), 583 Airport Road, Lititz, learned that Bird-inHand Fabric, owned by Sylvan and Loraine Stoltzfus, had been creating masks for anyone who requested one in response to the COVID-19 crisis, he was moved to involve MDS to help. “They had been making them for about two weeks out of the kindness of their hearts, and they were giving fabric and getting elastic and (wire) for the nose (to others who were making them),” Stoner explained. Bird-in-Hand resident Manny Flaud, who is associated with the Lancaster MDS unit, knows the Stoltzfuses, and he contacted them on behalf of MDS. “(The Stoltzfuses) were overwhelmed with thousands of requests (for masks),” recalled Stoner, who noted that requests had come from the Lancaster County Prison, Red Rose Transit Authority, and Water Street Mission, along with retirement homes. “Everyone was desperate for face masks made of fabric.” Stoner noted

Reaching 1,400 Girls At Home May 5K To Go Virtual By Ann Mead Ash
Under normal circumstances, Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a 10-week in-person program that couples physical activity with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. During an unsettling time of social distancing and cancellations, many local residents have found a therapeutic and productive outlet in gardening, whether it is a newfound interest or a longtime hobby. For families looking for activities that can involve their children, gardening can get the entire family away from screens while providing opportunities to enjoy the spring weather. Gardening also teaches a life skill in sustainability, and it just might produce a harvest that is both valuable and delicious. “Planting vegetables can be fun and rewarding for the whole family,” pointed out Dan Funk, owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses in Washington Boro. “Some spring vegetables such as See Gardening pg 5
A Sweet Donation As of March 13, the Personal Care and Health Care areas of United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) were closed to visitors. As with those living in all retirement communities under COVID-19 restrictions, residents miss seeing family members and friends who can no longer visit them. To brighten the spirits of UZRC residents, Elli Miller, leader of local Girl Scout Troop 70246, contacted UZRC on March 25 with a sweet offer. Miller had nearly 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies that the troop members would not be able to sell in the usual way, so she offered the cookies to UZRC residents and employees. At the end of March, UZRC staff members delivered the cookies to residents along with servings of milk. According to Megan Weiss, director of marketing and development, the unexpected gift lifted spirits across campus. “(The UZRC) residents and employees cannot say thank you enough See Sweet Donation pg 3
lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. However, since mid-March, the 1,400 girls in Lancaster and Lebanon counties who were to take part in GOTR this spring have not been living in normal circumstances. Since they are not attending school due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are not able to meet with their coaches and teams regularly after school. GOTR has responded to this situation with two new virtual lessons released each Tuesday as part of the GOTR At Home curriculum. The first lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “We Are Unique; We Are Similar.” The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, at-home, shared See GOTR pg 2

Together, we can stop the spread. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. For your family. For your neighbors. For our entire community.

For those who wish to add a pop of floral color outdoors but may not have ample yard space, window boxes are one way to dress up a home’s exterior. If produce is the goal, Funk advised picking a location with ample sunlight. “Too much shade and you will just get plant growth without getting any edible product, Funk advised. MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition has offered a creative solution for those who do not have space for a garden but would like to develop a green thumb, offering rototilled plots to interested community members upon completion of an application. Bonnie Kleinhans is in her second year overseeing the 32 plots, each measuring 30 by 20 feet. “We are blessed with the land and wanted to share it with others and to interact with the community, explained Kleinhans. A raised bed garden can also be a beneficial option, as it can confine the garden to a small location, allowing cultivators to concentrate their efforts. Other benefits of raised beds include a natural barrier that deters weeds and pests while at the same time holding nutrients, improving drainage, and avoiding compaction. When the current crisis hit, church leaders spent time in prayer and determined that now was the right time to turn the vision into a reality. “We stepped out in faith, and things fell into place quickly,” remarked Mission

moved up the timeline on the food pantry, the leaders hope to keep it going indefinitely. “In this climate, we are not entirely sure how it will be resourced, but the Lord has already shown us He will provide,” Lingenfelter remarked. “We will keep pursuing food resources, and we will continue to give it away as we have it.” Bethesda Mission Outreach in Mechanicsburg helped Mission Church get its food pantry started by donating 14 pallets of nonperishable food and household items, and it is continuing to support the new food pantry. Mission Church has also been able to purchase food from Blessings of Hope in Ephrata, and it aims to buy supplies from Central Pennsylvania Food Bank
(CPFB) as well. Local businesses have contributed to the food pantry with donations and planned food drives. Blessings of Hope and CPFB have also provided advice as Mission Church gets the pantry started. Local and regional nonprofits have been helpful, said Brian Bitler, Mission Church director of operations and strategic advancement. The Lancaster Food Hub, Mission Central, several local churches, and larger church-based food pantries in Ontario and Arizona have lent their expertise. “They have all been extremely helpful and willing to share information as we all work together to meet real needs in our communities,” Bitler commented. Church senior pastor Jerry Lingenfelter. “The Lord has brought great partners to help us with supplies and the logistical infrastructure to get things moving. While we are thrilled to house the pantry, it is really a full community effort. There are a lot of great organizations in this region and around the country and even in Canada who have helped us.” Lingenfelter noted that Mission Church exists to make disciples who are loved and sent to the glory of God. “We believe we are called to preach the Gospel and then live what we preach. Right now, the food pantry is a great way to offer the love of Christ to those in need,” Lingenfelter said. While the state shutdown might have

PUBLIC AUCTION
MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition - May 6, 2020 - 9 Members of the public are invited to support the Mission Church Community Food Pantry by donating nonperishable food and household items. Businesses are also welcome to donate products and resources, host food drives, or ask staff members and clients to get involved. Current and priority needs are posted at the aforementioned website. For more information, readers may email foodpantry@mission-church.com or call the church office at 717393-9600.
Food Pantry from pg 8 In the first two weeks, Mission Church received requests from more than 175 families, representing more than 800 people. Individuals who consider themselves to have a need may submit requests for food assistance by visiting www.mission-church.com/foodpantry. Bitler noted that eligibility requirements may be added in the future, but for now, the church wants to aid as many people as possible. After people register, a Mission Church staff member or volunteer will contact them to set up a timeframe for pickup. For safety precautions, prepacked boxes of food are delivered to vehicles in the church’s parking lot. The boxes contain ingredients to make balanced meals based on nutritional guidelines, Bitler said. A minimal supply of perishable meats and produce is available due to limited freezer and refrigerator space. In addition to food items, the pantry has toilet paper and laundry detergent while supplies last.
Mission Church director of facility management Jeremiah Miller holds a box of food like those distributed to families in the past three weeks at the new Mission Church Community Food Pantry near Lampeter. The church welcomes donations of nonperishable foods and household items, as well as applications for assistance.
