Heart Of Lancaster Show To Debut Spring Event By Chelsea Peifer
Over the years, Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show founder and chairperson Marilyn Hobday received numerous requests from exhibitors for a spring show to be added into the calendar in addition to the traditional fall event. “Finally after enough prodding, I decided to go for it,” said Hobday with a laugh. “Our main focus for this first year is just getting a lot of quality art work,” Hobday continued. “It’s going to be a fun show. I think this will get people excited about the fall show, and I think they’re really going to complement each other.” The inaugural spring Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Root’s Country Market,
705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Parking will be located in the residential area across from Burle Business Park, and a free bus service will shuttle guests from Lancaster Catholic High School and Grandview Shopping Plaza throughout the day. The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy began in 1990 when a child, Matt, was granted his wish to ride in an 18-wheeler and talk to his sister via CB radio. On the day of Matt’s Wish, more than 40 trucks were in the Convoy. Since then, the event has grown each year. In 2003, 2004, and 2016, the Convoy set the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest truck convoy.

The 30th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 12, at Burle Business Park, 1000 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. The Convoy Carnival will take place on the Burle Business Park property from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the trucks will leave promptly at 1:30 p.m. The Convoy will end at about 4:30 p.m. This year’s goal is to raise $550,000 for Make-A-Wish. Organizers expect to host approximately 600 drivers with trucks and trailers at the Truck Convoy, as well as an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 community members at the Convoy Carnival. The Convoy itself is a 26-mile scenic route through Amish Country, where 25,000 members of the community line the route to cheer on the drivers and the 125 Wish recipients who ride with them. This year, the final vehicle will be the Wish Family Bus, transporting family members of Wish recipients who are deceased. The first truck will tow the Wish Angel Trailer, which features stars emblazoned with names of Wish children who are deceased.

Gyrofest from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Thursday, May 9, 6-8pm Legend Senior Living 80 West Millport Road, Lititz, PA
The name of the event might be Gyrofest, but the anticipated star of the show at the sixth annual event on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, will be loukoumades. “They’re the most sought-after item at the Greek Bazaar (held in the fall),” said Gyrofest co-chair George Soukas. “They’re crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. We serve them the traditional way. They’ll be freshly fried and drizzled with spiced honey.” Loukoumades are double-leavened, with both baking powder and fresh yeast creating pockets of air within the dough structure. The sweet glaze on the exterior is what has given loukoumades the colloquial names of “honey balls” or “honey puffs.” They are also known as “honey tokens” because of their history. Soukas related that

loukoumades were awarded to athletes at the ancient Olympic Games. Olive oil, honey, and gold were coveted items, and as loukoumades contained the first two, only the rich could enjoy them. Soukas related that 8,000 loukoumades were sold at last year’s bazaar, and he and his co-chair, Manny Firoglanis, are planning to sell 4,000 of the pastries at Gyrofest this year. The honey balls will be available by the piece. Other treats offered at the festival will include Greek coffee and frappes, baklava and baklava sundaes, butter cookies called koulourakia, and rice pudding, which will be sold with or without cinnamon in 4-ounce and 8-ounce containers. “Cinnamon is a very Greek spice,” Soukas remarked. The main dish at Gyrofest, a pita filled with meat, vegetables, and tzatziki sauce, will be sold in a platter with Greek fries and a salad. The organizers are expecting to sell 3,000 platters. “It’s been a really good event for us,” Soukas commented. “It invites contact with the community and

Inviting folks to attend the spring-themed Grand Purple Gala in Willow Street on May 18 are (from left) Coleen Frazier, Nancy Lawrence, Julie Ehrgood, and Megan Varano. The proceeds from the event will support the Alzheimer’s Association. with Alzheimer’s came from her grandfather and her work as a nurse in memory care facilities. “I wanted to do something that had an impact, Frazier said. “I did a lot of education with families. It’s an exhausting disease. Relating an incident during which her grandfather slipped out of the house tremendously underdressed for the cold weather, she added, “It’s scary. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as folks age, some forgetfulness is normal. When memory loss disrupts everyday life, however, that is indicative that Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may be developing. A decline in thinking and reasoning skills is also a red flag, and folks should see their doctor. Group member Mary Read has
dubbed herself an Alzheimer’s ambassador, as she has been dealing with the early onset of these symptoms. Frazier noted that the disease is such that the diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after death. In living people, diagnosis is made based on cognitive testing. “It’s a very grueling process, Frazier said. Information about Alzheimer’s disease will be available at the Grand Purple Gala. Say the word “gala and visions of triple-digit ticket prices might come to mind. Tickets for the Grand Purple Gala set for Saturday, May 18, however, are priced in the mid-doubledigits, thanks to corporate and individual sponsors. “We want it to be affordable, said gala president Coleen Frazier. “We want caregivers to be there too. Folks who buy tickets will be admitted to the gala, which has the theme “Spring Into the Light this year. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street. The dress code is spring semiformal, and only folks age 21 or older will be admitted. Guests may visit food stations, where they may partake of wings, empanadas, meatballs, charcuterie, a version of cheesesteaks, scones, cupcakes, chocolatecovered strawberries, and more. Some beverages will be included, and others may be purchased separately. Two Pints Shy, a power folk band that strives to be fun and energetic, will perform music for dancing. The group plays covers from six decades as well as some originals. A silent auction will run during the event. Trips to a themed amusement park in Florida, Las Vegas, and New York will be up for bids. Other items in the auction
will include a firepit filled with goodies, themed baskets, certificates for lunches with government officials, golf and spa packages, a Penn State University-themed cornhole game, Lancaster Barnstormers swag and VIP packages, a pilot lesson, and more. Bids will also be accepted for hours of care provided by a licensed professional caregiving business. Additionally, there will be opportunities to enter a prize drawing. The proceeds from the Grand Purple Gala will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association by way of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The local event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Overlook Park, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The tagline of the signature fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association is “lead the way to Alzheimer’s first survivor. Currently, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to www.alz.org. The Alzheimer’s Association funds research into the disease, and it also offers support groups for people with the disease and for their caregivers, provides online message boards through ALZConnected, and hosts a free, nationwide helpline that offers information and referrals. The Grand Purple Gala was created by Julie Ehrgood and Frazier, both of whom have family members with Alzheimer’s. They were joined by additional women whom the disease has affected in some way. Dream BIG! from pg 1 The 2019 workshops will include “The Path That Brings Me Back to You - Visioning With God,” presented by Steve and Colleen Adams; “Become Aware of Your Presence,” presented by Dan Armstrong; “Wake Up, Get Up, and Go!” presented by Julia Banks; “Created for Greatness,” presented by the Dash Girls; “Rewind. Remind. Redefine. Peeking at Your Past to Purposefully Be Present for Your Future,” presented by Tabitha Deller; and “Finding Your Passion Through a Side Hustle,” presented by Jonathan and Denise Ebersole. In addition, a vendor fair featuring up to a dozen vendors will be held during the event. As an example of what can happen when one dares to dream, Germaine shared some of the events that have occurred in her life in the last year. “I was getting my story out and sharing about Dare to Dream,” said Germaine. “God put it in my heart to do a song.” A friend directed her to Eric Copeland, who is president of a music label, and together they wrote a song called “Dream BIG!”
that is based on Germaine’s life story. In September 2018, Germaine traveled to Nashville to record the vocals. Grammy winner Jonathan Crone oversaw the recording of the song, which Germaine co-produced with Copeland. A launch party will be held for the song on Monday, May 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Admission is free. “God is doing amazing things,” said Germaine. “I always wanted to sing. I wanted to go to Nashville.” Realizing one of her dreams has inspired Germaine to want to share with others. “Dreaming reminds us of who we are in Christ,” said Germaine. “I want to encourage (attendees) to dream again and dream big!” There is no charge to attend Dream BIG! However, registration is necessary. Individuals wishing to attend may search for “Dream BIG! Ignite Your Passion” at www.eventbrite.com to register by Saturday, June 8. Child care and lunch will not be provided.

called “Dream BIG!: Ignite Your Passion,” and it will be open to men and teenagers age 15 and up in addition to women. The event will include praise and worship led by Matt and Kim Goss, speakers, and a number of workshops. “This is for anyone, (whether) married or single,” said Germaine, who explained that the “BIG” in Dream BIG! stands for “Bringing in God.” “When you bring God into your dreams, you ignite your passion,” she explained. “It’s for anyone who has had a dream and let go.” As a single mom, Germaine noted that it was hard for her to dream again, but through founding the Dare to Dream events, she took that step. An important part of Dream BIG! will be the workshops, which Germaine noted are specifically geared toward helping people move forward. “One couple (will hold a) workshop on embracing brokenness,” noted Germaine. “(That’s about breaking) free (from) our past to dream again.”

Warwick Softball Claims Section One Crown by Vaughn Brown
Three up, three down. That was the storyline for Warwick softball last week as the lady Warriors pretty much sealed their Section One title with wins over McCaskey, Penn Manor, and Hempfield. In Monday’s contest with McCaskey at home under the lights, Marissa Treibley held the Red Tornado to only three hits in a 10-0 shutout that lasted five innings. Treibley also drove in two runs in a 2-3 effort at the plate while Danielle Jones went 4-4 with four RBIs and only needed a home run to complete the cycle in her offensive outburst. Warwick tallied 14 hits in all and spread its 10 runs out over the course of the game, scoring once in each of the opening innings, twice in both the third and fifth, and four times in
the fourth. Catie Brubaker (3-4, RBI), Evie Clugston (1-3, 3RBI), Katelyn Minney (2-4), Peyton Heisey (1-2), and Emily Beale (1-4) added to the Warwick win. In a battle between first and second place teams, the lady Warriors traveled to Penn Manor last Tuesday where they handled the Comets 6-1. Minney got the start, pitching the complete game with seven hits and an earned run while striking out seven and walking one. Penn Manor remained scoreless until the fifth before finally crossing the plate for its lone run of the game, but by then the damage had already been done as Warwick had amassed a six-run lead. Warwick led 2-0 after the second on a double by Brubaker (1-4, RBI) in the first that scored Beale (2-4, RBI), and then Beale’s single in the second that brought home Kenzie Stewart (1-2). Clugston
(1-3, 2RBI) was thrown out at the plate on the same play, ending the inning. In the fourth, Treibley (1-4) and Heisey (1-3) both singled and Stewart was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with no outs. A fielder’s choice by Clugston brought Heisey home after Treibley was thrown out at the plate and was followed by a single from Amanda Forsythe (1-2, 2RBI) that scored Stewart to make it 4-0. Warwick scored its final two runs of the game in the next inning beginning with a two-out, bases loaded single by Clugston and ending with Forsythe getting hit by a pitch before Beale grounded out to end the inning at 6-0. Wednesday’s game at Hempfield turned into a nail biter as both Minney and Hempfield’s pitcher Gabi Turner battled it out on the rubber. However, it was the Black Knights that blinked twice as
Warwick gutted out a 2-0 victory. Clugston (1-3) was the first to figure out Turner, but it didn’t come until the third inning when she dropped a short single just behind third and then moved to third on a double by Forsythe (2-3). Beale (14, RBI) then brought her home on Warwick’s third straight hit of the game when she dropped her own soft single on the line behind first base for the 1-0 lead. Warwick had more opportunities to score in the inning, but left the bases loaded when Brubaker and Jones were both retired by Turner for the final outs. Warwick’s final run of the game came on a line drive double by Minney (1-2, RBI) in the fifth that scored Forsythe from second after she opened the inning with a two-bagger of her own. Minney, again, went the full seven innings only surrendering two
hits with five strikeouts and one walk. VOLLEYBALL With high stakes on the line-a possible Section One title-and in front of a packed house at Hempfield High School last Tuesday, the Warriors faced off with second place Hempfield which was looking to avenge its only loss of the season at the hands of Warwick. In a tense battle that was a lot closer than the 3-0 score indicated, the Knights got their revenge and created a tie at the top of the Section. With scores of 25-22, 25-23, and
26-24 the Warriors (9-1, 12-1) and Knights (9-1, 11-1) gave everything they had with Hempfield playing just a little better in the re-match. Warwick trailed much of the first game, eventually catching the Knights who would pull away again numerous times, each time getting tied again by the Warriors, until finishing out to go up 1-0. Falling behind quickly in the second, Warwick seemed to have no answer but then began putting a streak together that brought them to within one, 20-19. Warwick then

MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition won four of the next seven points to tie the game at 23-23 before conceding the final two and falling behind 2-0. Warwick led midway through the third and found themselves tied at 24-24 but the Knights went up by one
and then scored the match winner on a service ace by Owen Hanzelman that was left alone by Warwick but landed just inside the line. Foster Lobb and Chad Meeder led Warwick with 11 kills apiece while Meeder also recorded two aces and
17 digs and Lobb blocked two. Connor Baer racked up 34 assists as well. The Warriors shook off that loss and took it out on Manheim Township on Thursday with a 3-0 shutout of the Streaks. Adam Kurtz tallied 10 kills and two aces, Noah Miller had nine kills, and Baer served up two aces in the 25-6, 25-11, 25-12 victory. TRACK Warwick’s girls clinched their Section One title last Monday with a commanding 105-45 performance over Penn Manor while the boys also came away with a victory in a much closer 85-64 triumph. In a dominant showing over the Comets, the lady Warriors claimed every event but the shot, discus, and javelin with two athletes doubling down on wins. Emily Skidmore
and Julliette Delmotte earned two victories apiece as Skidmore shone in the hurdles, winning the 100 in 16.6 and the 300 in 48.2 while Delmotte excelled in both the long jump (15-2.25) and the triple jump (37-0.75). With Warwick also winning all three relays, the Williamson sisters made their mark as at least one of them ran in each race with all three, Jessica, Emily, and Aubrey, teaming up with Alexa Wenger to finish the 3200 in 12:01.9. Leah Graybill, Jessica, Meghan Quinn, and Lily Palacio-Lewis took the 400 in a time of 47.9, while in the 1600 it was Kate Dickow, Emily, Caitlyn Wagner, and Graybill coming out on top with a 4:11.8. Other winners included Graybill in the 100 (12.1), Dickow in the 1600 (5:30.6), Quinn in the 400 (59.7),
Anna Martin in the 800 (2:25.1), Palacio- Lewis in the 200 (25.5), Wenger in the 3200 (13:37.4), Trinity Bitting-Ellis in the high jump (4-10), and Mahayla Meyer in the pole vault (8-0). The boys, meanwhile, won six of the eight individual races and went 2-3 in the relays, but were caught in the field by the Comets who won four out of seven events. Tanner Haines and Nick Coomer starred as the only two multiple event winners. Haines won both the hurdles with a 15.9 in the 100 and a 43.6 in the 300 and Coomer claimed the shot put (46-7) and the discus (137-9). The team of David Bach, Parker Keares, Jeremiah Hendrix, and Jeremy Bell won the 3200 in 8:56.0 while Sean Badessa, Ryan Fegley, Christian Hess, and Guernel Marcellus took the 400 with a time of 43.0. Other winners included: Fegley in the 100 (11.2), Connor Shields in the 1600 (4:37.1), Noah Martin in the 800 (2:02), Bell in the 3200 (10:34.6), and Hess in the high jump (6-0). Twelve teams from the District get in to the tournament and the Warriors were ranked 11th at the end of last week, however, not all teams from the District have finished their seasons. With a slight 30-28 advantage in shots, it was the Streaks that made the most of theirs as Warwick scored three times in the first half to go down 8-3 and then were outscored in the second 4-3. Justin Gerhart led the Warriors with two goals, while Conor Adams, Carter Davis, Joshua Swift, and Cayden Rihn each added one. The girls finished out their season on a losing note as well, dropping the final three last week. They went down 18-4 to Lampeter-Strasburg, 19-4 opposite Cocalico, and 20-9 against Wyomissing. each scored two apiece for Warwick. Cocalico’s game went much the same way as the Eagles outshot Warwick 35-9 and Stauffer turned away 16. Sheppard scored two, while Armstrong and Lindsay Quinn added one apiece. Versus Wyomissing on Saturday six players accounted for the nine goals with Emma Leister putting up three, Armstrong and Quinn adding two apiece, and Sheppard and Amanda Beck tallying one each. BASEBALL Warwick dropped two out of three games last week as it prepares for the end of the season and the beginning of playoffs. The Warriors lost to McCaskey 2-1 last Monday before coming back to win 8-5 against Penn Manor on Tuesday and the finishing out with a 5-3 loss to Hempfield on Wednesday. Evan Rohrbach got the start against the Red Tornado, but it was Colin Brubaker that took the loss as he came on in relief in the fifth and surrendered two runs on one hit. Warwick came to bat in the sixth, trailing by two, and got one back on a single by John Seibert (1-3, RBI) that scored Brendan Martin (1-3) from second, but left two runners on base in the seventh to end the game. The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Penn Manor and then added two more in the second and three in the fourth for an 8-0 lead before the Comets rallied late for six runs over the final three innings. Colby Martin went 3-4 with three RBIs while Ethan Heller (1-2, 2RBI), and Martin (1-2, RBI), helped add to the victory. Dagen Young picked up the win. Hempfield erased a 1-0 Warwick lead by scoring five unanswered runs before the Warriors scored twice more in the failed come-back bid. Jackson Davies picked up the loss, going four innings and surrendering three runs before Brubaker came on in the fifth and Martin finished things out in the seventh. Martin (2-3, RBI), and Seibert (2-4, RBI) paced Warwick.
