On March 12, Rick Bernhardt, senior administrator of Lititz Christian School (LCS), breathed a sigh of relief. The school had sent a group of senior students and teachers as chaperones to Guatemala, and on March 12, the day before Gov. Tom Wolf announced that schools were closing due to the COVID-19 crisis, that delegation landed in Newark, N.J. “God was so good; He brought them back safely,” said Bernhardt. Bernhardt and the administration and teachers at LCS were not very surprised the next day when they learned that schools would be closing; in fact, they had spent the week of March 9 through 13 preparing for such an announcement. “The week before schools were canceled, we brought in See Lititz Christian pg 2

Bryanna Still has always loved music. “I began my interest in music at a really young age,” said Bryanna. “I grew up listening to soulful old rhythm and blues and a lot of ’70s and ’80s music. Having that start really inspired me to be passionate about music.” In the fall, the Dayspring Christian Academy senior will head to Edinboro University in northern Pennsylvania to begin a double major in art and music therapy, an ambitious eightyear program that will earn her a doctorate in those subject areas. Bryanna’s journey to this point has not been likely, but her talents, love of art and music, and determination to succeed have helped her discover her potential and have influenced others, such as Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a

Lititz Christian from pg 1 substitutes and we trained all our staff members to do online teaching so that Monday (March 16), we were up and running,” explained Bernhardt, who noted that prior to that time, LCS was not utilizing online learning. “It speaks so highly of these teachers,” he said. “We were overwhelmed with how the faculty and staff adapted.” With LCS students resuming classes so quickly after school was closed, Bernhardt anticipates the school will finish the academic year in early June. “We are running the full year,” noted Bernhardt. “We are committed to a rigorous education. We are committed to doing this well and finishing strong.” The LCS campus, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz, includes a kindergarten-through-12thgrade school of 232 students and

an Early Learning Center (ELC) with 195 students. About 86 faculty and staff members work onsite. Four administrators, in addition to Bernhardt, oversee the programs: elementary and middle school principal Allyson Harmon, high school principal Ryan McCracken, ELC director Jamie Esbenshade, and ELC assistant director Jess Daugherty. Niki Cadwalader serves as admissions director. ELC teachers are volunteering their time to offer young students online story times until the center is allowed to reopen per state regulations. In addition to the focus on academics, the school wants to maintain a social element. Cadwalader began utilizing the phrase “Let’s Stay Connected” to encourage LCS families to keep in touch during the stay-at-home

period. “As a parent, I feared people would feel disconnected,” said Cadwalader, whose daughter is a junior at LCS. “We started using social media so people didn’t feel so alone.” Staying connected has included sharing photos and videos. “We pride ourselves on being a family community that sticks together even though we are physically separate.” Bernhardt agreed, adding that the school posts on Instagram and Facebook regularly. “ We think instead of social distancing we should be physically distant and socially connected,” he stated. “We don’t want to be socially distant.” Going forward, LCS is determined to give the Class of 2020 a graduation ceremony. Contingent on state regulations, the graduation ceremony that was slated for Friday, May 29, may be held outside in July. “Our parents and graduates want it to be as traditional as possible but also realistic,” said Bernhardt. “They don’t want a virtual graduation.” He noted, “We will have a few elements that are different but awesome. We have some really creative ideas to make it

something that no other class has ever experienced.” Bernhardt said that LCS also hopes to reschedule the spring musical, “Willy Wonka,” for a fall date if restrictions are lifted. Bernhardt noted that seniors who had parts in the show will be at college at that time, but the school has a goal of working around seniors’ schedules to bring them home for the presentation. Cadwalader is currently taking prospective students and their families on virtual tours of the building. “We had a virtual kindergarten day, and we also had a virtual preview day for any family that has shown interest,” she said, adding that video meetings with school principals have also been held. For preschoolers whose parents are considering LCS, a teacher read a story and asked students to draw a picture to send to her. The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has slated its annual spring auditions for the 2020-21 choir year, but this year, due to COVID-19, auditions are being offered virtually in May. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung, and singing one prepared piece of music. MCCL serves more than 160 singers. The performing choirs include singers in Carol Choir, grades two through five; Concert Choir, grades six through eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine through 12. The choirs practice weekly on Tuesday evenings from late August through early May. The choirs are led by artistic director Rosemary Blessing and director Sarah Wingard. Blessing holds degrees in piano performance and business administration from Eastern Mennonite University and has pursued graduate study in choral music. She maintains a private piano studio and teaches piano at Franklin & Marshall College. An active pianist in the Lancaster area, Blessing currently plays with the Allegro Orchestra. She is a founding member of the Beyond Ourselves chamber ensemble, a project pairing music and social justice, with annual benefit concerts promoting and supporting the global work of Mennonite Central Committee. Wingard earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from Messiah College with a concentration in voice and extensive study in piano. Growing up in Virginia, she sang with the nationally acclaimed Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir. She teaches elementary music and middle school chorus at the Locust Grove campus of Lancaster Mennonite School. She also sings and regularly solos with the Susquehanna Chorale. SWAN from pg 1 6 to 18. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org. While it was not always easy for Bryanna to incorporate music into her life, she found ways to exercise her passion. “When I got the opportunity (I took) music in school,” recalled Bryanna, who listed violin, viola, and recorder among her first instruments. “(When there was) anything to do with handson music or singing or performing (offered), I was the first to sign up,” she said. Bryanna attended Price Elementary in SDoL for kindergarten and then moved to Washington Elementary for first grade, where she started

playing violin. But from third through fifth grades, Bryanna did not stay in one place for long. “I bounced around in schools. I couldn’t invest myself in a music class, but I started getting instruments of my own,” she recalled, noting that her neighbors on Green Street in Lancaster offered her old instruments to try or practice on. When she was 10, Bryanna started taking violin lessons and participating in rhythm classes through SWAN. After completing a SWAN event at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort in Willow Street in 2013, Bryanna was waiting for her ride and singing along to “No One” by

Alicia Keys as it played over the lobby speaker. According to Bryanna, Vuolo heard the singing and was impressed. “Diana came over and said, ‘ We’re getting you (voice) lessons.’ That’s what started my singing career,” said Bryanna. Vuolo recognized Bryanna’s intelligence as well as her talent, and SWAN helped to secure a scholarship for her to attend Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville. Vuolo recalled that Bryanna’s grandmother, with whom she had been living, died in 2013 shortly before Bryanna was scheduled to sing the national anthem on the pitcher’s mound of the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The 11-yearold bravely completed the task and six months later soloed with the Dayspring Honors Choir in front of 2,500 people at the school’s Remember America Speaker Series event featuring Dr. Ben Carson. In the summer of 2018, SWAN held a summer camp, which provided 120 hours of instruction to local children. Bryanna was looking for a productive way to spend her summer, and she became a camp volunteer, assisting the teachers. After the SWAN camp ended, the teachers she had worked with suggested she be hired as a teacher for the SWAN team, and she began leading group lessons at Price and Lafayette elementary schools.

Vuolo noted that the teachers were acutely aware of Bryanna’s character and skill. “Her ability to work with traumatized children and their behavioral and scholastic failures convinced me she will indeed be a great music and art therapist someday,” said Vuolo. Bryanna credits her father, Clifford Still, with helping her to develop her interest in art. Clifford was incarcerated most of Bryanna’s life, and he is now deceased. “My dad would send me letters with drawings, or he would ask me to draw something and send it back. That is how I connected with my father,” Bryanna recalled. “I couldn’t sing to my dad, but I could draw for him, and I wanted to practice my art and get better at it. I wanted my art to be an expression of who I was and to really echo my goals in life.” Looking ahead, Vuolo believes Bryanna’s past will affect her future in positive ways. “She is a woman of faith and has chosen to … direct the pain of her life to help others,” Vuolo said. “I have witnessed her tremendous successes such as the many times that she has stepped up ... front of audiences to not only perform, but to be an ambassador and spokesperson for the many children affected by parental incarceration and trauma. Her love for others fuels that bravery.”

Hospital Receives Donated Masks

A volunteer from the Plain community sewed cloth masks for health care workers, patients and families at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital in Wilmington, Del. Members of the Plain community have answered the call from area medical centers to increase their supplies of needed personal protective equipment (PPE). A contingent of helpers from Lancaster and Chester counties have sewn cloth masks to specifications for health care workers, patients and families. As of late April, more than 3,000 masks have been delivered to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital in Wilmington, Del., where many Plain children receive care. Cindy Bo, operational vice president and chief strategy officer for Nemours, is co-leading the hospital’s efforts to procure PPE as well as personal cloth masks. When the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, on whose board Bo serves, heard about Nemours’ need for masks, it notified the Plain community. Within days, volunteers had produced hundreds of masks, which were collected and delivered to the hospital.

Julia Martin, who also works at the Clinic for Special Children, personally delivered scores of masks to the hospital. In addition to duPont Hospital, Nemours provides pediatric care at more than 30 sites across Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recently awarded a $250,000 grant to the Manufacturers’ Association of Emigsville to establish a unique apprenticeship ecosystem that will support manufacturers in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties. The purpose of this forwardleaning project is to establish a registered apprenticeship ecosystem in southcentral Pennsylvania by expanding employer program participation, increasing the number of journey workers, and adding apprentices and pre-apprentices. The association has also been able to increase the number of trades included, such as toolmakers, machinists, maintenance mechanics, mechatronics technicians, quality technicians, and industrial manufacturing technicians, and it recently submitted paperwork to the state to add a registered automation robotics technician. Secondary objectives of the new program include increasing participation of nontraditional populations, which are typically underserved by trades training, and more efficiently aligning available resources to better support economic growth throughout the region. The program has expanded in recent years by creating a mentor training program, adding college credit and establishing a high school pre-apprenticeship program to prepare the future skilled workforce. The association currently has more than 80 apprentices from more than 30 companies in its multi-year apprentice training program, which aims to help regional manufacturers create a steady pipeline of skilled workers to meet their needs moving into the future. The southcentral Pennsylvania manufacturing sector was recently awarded a second round of funding to further support the Next Generation Manufacturing Industry Partnership. The commonwealth’s PAsmart Next Gen grants provide funds to support the development, launch, implementation, and technical

assistance of Next Gen Industry Partnerships (IP), which address the workforce, economic development, and educational needs of regional industries through an employer-led and demand-driven approach. Over the past year, the Southcentral Pennsylvania Manufacturing Next Gen Industry Partnership of regional manufacturing leaders created action teams that focused on the most urgent needs identified by the industry. Those include promoting manufacturing careers to grow the future workforce, improving training opportunities for middle-skill and technical occupations, and facilitating businessto-business connections to exchange best practices. The partnership is facilitated by The Manufacturers’ Association which works with regional organizations to support the employers’ initiatives, which include SCPa Works, the regional workforce development board; the Southcentral Pennsylvania Partnership for Regional

Economic Performance; and the educational partners in southcentral Pennsylvania. The private sector-driven initiative is led by two employer co-champions, Weldon Solutions, a manufacturer of grinding machines and robotic integration, and Phoenix Contact, a global leader in electronic connectors. The Manufacturers’ Association is a multi-county trade association serving as an advocate and partner for manufacturing and logistics in southcentral Pennsylvania and northcentral Maryland. The organization provides apprentice and skilled trade training, workforce development programs, group benefit insurance, and member educational and networking events for its member companies. For more information about the new state-funded grants, starting an apprenticeship program, or the Next Gen Manufacturing Partnership, readers may contact Brian Paterniti at 717-843-3891 or bpaterniti@mascpa.org. Public Reminded To Report Abuse The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) reminds state residents that its ChildLine, a 24/7 hotline for reporting concerns of child abuse or neglect, is still fully operational and available at 800-932-0313 for Pennsylvanians seeking to report potential cases of child abuse or neglect. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and as scheduled recognition activities and regular life have shifted due to COVID-19, DHS and child welfare advocates implore all Pennsylvanians to learn signs of potential abuse or neglect and, if they suspect abuse, make the call to ChildLine. As the public navigates this public health crisis and the necessary disruptions, it is important to not lose sight of the obligation to keep children safe and prevent child abuse. Whether it is a neighbor, family member, or community member encountered in a store or elsewhere, if someone suspects something is wrong, anyone can call ChildLine and make a report.

For the 14th straight year, the Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) field hockey team earned the National Academic Team award from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Additionally, nine of the women on the team claimed a spot on the National Academic Squad. The Academic Team award recognizes the team grade point average (GPA) from the fall semester of the 2019-20 academic year, recognizing programs with a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. EMU’s streak of 14 consecutive years of earning the team award started from the 2006 season. The Academic Squad award is for individuals who hold a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher through the fall semester. Rachel Breslin of Lititz, Lauren Hartzler of Manheim, and Madeline Mast of Lancaster are among the Royals who were honored. A total of 1,943 student-athletes from the 157 Division III institutions were recognized this year. Mast, EMU’s lone senior, earned special recognition as a four-year honoree on the National Academic Squad. The Royals finished with a record of 5-13, and sophomore defender Brandy Troutman of Mountville tied for the national lead with a program record 17 defensive saves. Pettis Earns Entomologist Certificate

Shawn Pettis Locally-owned Dominion Pest Control, which serves the Susquehanna Valley, recently announced that its general service manager, Shawn Pettis, has become the first person to become a public health entomologist (PHE) certificate holder, a new certification offered by the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Pettis recently received his PHE certification after becoming an associate certified entomologist (ACE), which indicates that the certified person has acquired skills to identify insects and understand their biology. The PHE certificate acknowledges that the holder “studied for and passed a rigorous exam covering insects and the diseases they vector, as well as principals of integrated pest management.” In today’s world with diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease related to pests found in backyards, such as ticks and mosquitoes, Dominion is pleased to have Pettis on board to help make decisions about control measures that can be implemented on customers’ properties. Pettis is a graduate of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, where he studied business and currently serves on the board of governors. Pettis was recently featured in a pest industry magazine, Pest Management Professional (PMP), for his ACE and PHE achievements. An online version can be viewed at www.mypmp.net/2020/04/14/ public-health-training-the-focus -of-qualitypro-esa.
