Working To Grant Wishes Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash

In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was

ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. In the meantime, Make-A-Wish needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when the organization is able. To make those wishes come true, the organization embarked on a virtual giving week, held from April 22 to 29. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by mid-May nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Dennis Heron, president and CEO of

Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases. While COVID-19 restrictions have made that mission difficult, the organization recently held a giving week that raised nearly $100,000 toward making that goal easier.

MHALC Offers Mental Health Support A lot has been said lately about the importance of physical health as it pertains to the novel coronavirus. However, as people stay confined to their homes or report to jobs where they might be putting themselves at risk of illness, mental health must not be forgotten. “It is just as important to take protective action and precautions for your mental health as you

would for your physical health. One cannot exist without the other,” advised Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “COVID-19 has changed the way we think about things. Where we had safety, we have insecurities. We are also conflicted with feeling anxious but also grateful for some of the gifts that we have received as a result of this crisis. The forced series of events and feelings associated with them can throw our equilibrium off.” MHALC’s mission is to promote optimal mental health through advocacy, education, and support, so the organization has stepped up its efforts to help individuals cope with these trying times.

Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away” by the support. “On behalf of the children and families we serve, we thank everyone who donated for their dedication to the Make-A-Wish mission, especially during these challenging

times,” said Heron. On May 9, Make-A-Wish announced that the decision to turn the convoy into a virtual event had been made by staff and volunteer convoy planning committee members, and that the August date had been set. The decision was based on See Make-A-Wish pg 3

When the picnic was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Cole wanted to re-create a part of the picnic in time for Mother’s Day, which was held on May 10. Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, has created a virtual flower garden that mothers and other family members may use to honor the child they lost. Although the virtual garden was created for Mother’s Day, it will be available into the future for those who would like to dedicate a flower to their child.

“The uncertainty is what’s unsettling,” McDevitt said. “It’s important to remember, in spite of this all, you still have control over your day-to-day.” Both solitude and unrelenting closeness can be challenges. For people who seek connection, McDevitt recommended video chats with friends and family or calling someone they might not have talked to in a while. She noted that it is valuable to ask three simple questions of someone who might be struggling with loneliness: Do you feel left out? Do you lack companionship? Do you feel isolated? The answers to these questions can help lonely people acknowledge their isolation and begin to open contact with others in a supportive social network. “Research shows that just reaching out and being there for someone can truly save a life,” said MHALC child/family advocate Gretchen Gaudioso. Hugs and even handshakes have been sacrificed for social distancing, and the lack of physical contact can have a real impact. McDevitt recommended snuggling with pets or meditating to achieve calmness when needing touch. Conversely, designating a getaway spot in a house or apartment and then informing cohabitants of a need for space before being overwhelmed may help with too much closeness, McDevitt said. Establishing a routine for all household members ensures that there is order to each day, with time for short breaks built in. It is normal to feel anxiety, but when it persists or there is little to no relief during the day, it can be a good thing to take the mental health screening at www.mhalancaster.org/screening-tools/. If any of the symptoms are persistent or impede daily function, professionally trained MHALC staff members

can provide a listening ear or guidance toward more intensive support, McDevitt said. MHALC has extended its hours to meet the increased need for 1-to-1 phone support, and it has created virtual support groups. “We have seen a spike on all of our online mental health screenings, most notably more than 50% increase on our anxiety and depression screenings,” McDevitt reported. More than half of the people who have taken the screenings have never received treatment. “This could be the first time they have experienced any symptoms or concern for their mental health, or their mental health challenges have increased to the point where they may need support. Everyone is experiencing or is being affected by someone who is experiencing anxiety right now,” McDevitt said. Mental health treatment can be expensive, and McDevitt expressed concern for people who have lost their jobs and medical insurance and are unable to pay out of pocket for mental health supports. She noted that MHALC is currently working on connecting people to assistance. MHALC provides services free of charge to the public and relies heavily on charitable support. Its main fundraising event was scheduled in April and had to be canceled, so McDevitt suggested that individuals may contribute to the Mental Health Sustainability Fund by visiting www.mha lancaster.org/give-back/. A 24/7 mental health and crisis support line has been established for people dealing with anxiety or other difficult emotions. Individuals may call the toll-free warmline at 855-2842494. Health Tips For Quarantine Posted With the implementing of social distancing policies, many people are spending much of their time at home. While staying at home is necessary, bodies and minds still need exercise, and people should continue practicing self-care within the framework of their home. Five ways to keep busy and active while at home are offered by TopCashBack.com. They include exercising, doing something relaxing, preparing healthy and fresh meals before turning to nonperishable items, maintaining a healthy routine, and keeping one’s mind active. Gym closures do not mean people have to sacrifice their gains. There are plenty of exercises that can be done from the comfort of one’s home and that require minimal equipment or none at all. Gym members should see if their gym is offering free virtual classes. Individuals can check out YouTube for videos on everything from Pilates and yoga to strength training. Not only can individuals find workout routines

from professional trainers to keep them moving and motivated, but these online routines may also be free. For individuals who can still go outside, nothing beats a walk as long as one can avoid crowds. Whether someone wants to binge-watch their favorite show or is constantly checking the news, everyone should try to balance their screen time with other activities. While staying informed is important, people should remember not to overdo it. People should focus on things that help them relax, like reading a book, knitting, doing crafts, or baking. It is important to take breaks, disconnect, and simply relax. In the midst of all the chaos, many people have stocked up on nonperishable items like canned goods. Before turning to these goods, people should make sure they incorporate fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich foods into their meals. Preparing fresh meals and freezing them is a great way to ensure

one’s health does not get compromised. It can also add some diversity to meals, which people may need if they are at home for an extended period of time. While individuals may not be able to stick to their normal routine - like commuting to work, going to the gym, and meeting friends for coffee - they can create a new routine at home which includes alternatives to the norm. As tempting as it is to stay in bed and work in pajamas, it may not be a good idea. It is important to get up and go on about the day as usual. Get up, get dressed,

establish meal times, and remember to take breaks to walk around the home. When work is done for the day, people are encouraged to schedule a virtual coffee date with their friends. Alongside staying physically active, keeping mentally active is important, too. Individuals should consider keeping their mind switched on by watching quiz-based programs or doing puzzles. People should challenge themselves to keep their mind distracted, which is important for those who may be home alone or are struggling to keep busy.

concern for the Make-A-Wish children and the members of the community who visit the event. No carnival will be held; however, a modified small truck convoy featuring the top 30 drivers and key sponsors will leave the auto auction during the day. The convoy will be broadcast live from the Make-AWish Facebook page. In addition, organizers are working to create other ways to share parts of the traditional convoy festivities, such as the food, clowns, and carnival games. Readers who would like to know more about the convoy may search for “Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy on Facebook or visit www.wishconvoy.org. “Our convoy planning committee and volunteers are already hard at work identifying ways to make this virtual convoy an amazing event for our community, our supporters, and especially our Wish families, said Terry Finch, one of the chairs of the convoy. “Drivers are continuing to raise funds through the new convoy date, and we’re excited about the fun new activities and technology we can use to create a successful

virtual event. In addition to postponing the convoy, the chapter has had to cancel or postpone many other in-person events that raise pivotal funds for wish-granting efforts. Make-A-Wish counts on the local community, especially truck drivers to make the rescheduled virtual convoy a success. Funds raised by the convoy have supported more than 75% of wishes granted to area children each year. Make-A-Wish hopes that area residents will continue to support the organization during this critical time because the longer the COVID-19 safety precautions are in place, the larger the number of local children waiting for wishes will continue to grow. Community support is vital as the organization looks to safely grant wishes involving travel or large gatherings. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley first began granting wishes in 1986. The Make-A-Wish organization grants a wish to a critically ill child approximately every 34 minutes. Readers may visit www.philadesv.wish.org to learn more.

Food Bank To Provide Fresh Food Summer Music Series Canceled The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for both farms and food banks. Farms have seen disruption in the food supply chain and food banks have seen an increase in demand for assistance. A new United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program is designed to address both concerns simultaneously. The Farmers to Families Food Box Program will procure fresh produce, dairy products, and meats like chicken and pork from domestic farms and box them to distribute to families in need through regional food banks and other food assistance organizations. The USDA program will procure an estimated $100 million per month in fresh fruits and

vegetables, $100 million per month in a variety of dairy products, and $100 million per month in meat products nationwide. Many farms have reported having to dump milk or eggs because the processing plants or packaging facilities cannot take them. The restaurants, hotels, and schools that used to buy the bulk products are closed. The funding for the food box program will compensate the farms and the food processors to package the products to distribute to families in need. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is poised to deliver the food boxes to its network of nearly 1,000 partner agencies throughout 27 central Pennsylvania

counties. The existing infrastructure built through participation in the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus Program, the Fill a Glass With Hope fresh milk program, and the MidAtlantic Regional Produce Cooperative means that the food bank is equipped to handle more fresh produce, dairy products, and meat. Farms or other food industry businesses that are interested in working with the food bank and the Farmers to Families Food Box program may contact Beth Hamilton at bhamilton@centralpafood bank.org. For more information on the food bank, readers may visit centralpafoodbank.org or call 717-564-1700.

The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation has announced the cancellation of its annual live summer music series scheduled for Sundays, June 7 to Aug. 30, at Long’s Park in Lancaster. The decision was made in response to the continued public health concern surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The foundation is working on alternative ways to provide cultural entertainment for the Lancaster area. In the coming months, it will continue to monitor the advice of government and health officials and remain flexible should health safety guidance permit live concerts at Long’s Park. The team is developing a plan for the summer music series that will include exclusive content shared only on the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s social media platforms

spring of 2020 may have been even more difficult for those who lost a child. “Parents who (have lost a child) are already feeling isolated, and then they come to Mother’s Day,” explained Cole. “The isolation was really piling up this year.” The virtual flower garden, which can be reached on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #stillamothergarden and #sweetpeaproject, acknowledges bereaved mothers and honors the children they love and miss. “We are still their mothers. That deserves to be remembered and celebrated,” wrote Cole in an invitation to mothers to take part. Those who participated posted a photograph of a flower on Facebook or Instagram along with the child’s name and the hashtags. Those wishing to post flowers may continue to do so.

grass-thatched roofs were destroyed. There is little to no palm leaf left, and it will take two to three years to regrow. With no income to buy building supplies, the people are in dire need of shelter. “Thirty to forty of us women and children packed into a larger hut while the wind was pulling at the roof and sides and rain pounded through. The men ran outside and stood around the hut to hold the roof on. I was scared we all would die,” shared a NiVan village woman, recalling her village’s harrowing tale of survival. designated as a permanent Sweet Pea Project Remembrance Garden. “It has a big tree and hundreds of flowers, and our logo and sign is there,” said Cole, who noted that she is continually amazed at how the siblings flock to the garden during the picnic. “There’s pizza, ice cream, and roller coasters, and these (siblings) stop in the middle of this super fun day to plant a flower,” she said. “It has been the most meaningful part of our picnic.” To give bereaved mothers and their families an opportunity to join together in a similar and safe way, Sweet Pea created a virtual flower garden. “I thought we should try to create a sense of community and salvage that flower piece,” said Cole, who noted that families do not forget the feeling of losing a child. While many local residents may be feeling the effects of staying home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Friends in Action (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown, is offering an opportunity to have a global impact. Since 1992, FIA has used infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached people groups in extremely remote areas. On April 6, Cyclone Harold, a Category 5 cyclone and the second-largest storm in Vanuatu’s history, almost leveled the South Pacific island country. To the people in Vanuatu’s hundreds of NiVan villages, some of whom still wear leaves or traditional loincloths for clothing and survive on subsistence farming, the storm was catastrophic. Dense jungle was shredded into barren sticks, entire villages were wiped out, roads were destroyed by flooding, and mudslides and debris caused a delay in the efforts to account for hundreds of villagers. Any food gardens and crops were decimated. To cope, people foraged what was left of gardens and root crops for food. Rivers and creeks have been used as water sources, but contamination from livestock has led to waterborne illnesses. “We’ve been eating what we can find on the ground, but that will soon be gone. I don’t know how we will survive,” a NiVan man speaking his native Bislama tongue told FIA missionary partners in the area. An estimated 80% to 90% of the villagers’ bamboo huts with

Cole recalled the struggles she endured facing her first Mother’s Day after losing her daughter. “When you lose a child, you feel like you’re the only one who ever suffered through this,” she said. “(It can be beneficial to have) a place you can scroll through quietly without having to (leave your home), and yet know you are part of something … you’re not alone.” “It gives a sense of unity,” Cole continued. “Even though we didn’t join together and put the flowers in the ground the way we usually do, it’s pretty nice to have some beautiful pictures to look at online.” Cole said she is looking forward to scheduling more Sweet Pea events in the fall, but in the meantime, she is glad the virtual flower garden is available for bereaved family members, especially as Father’s Day approaches. CPFB Gets Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced it received a $100,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to aid in its response to the COVID-19 crisis. The gift will be used to help meet the needs of food insecure residents of central Pennsylvania during the COVID-19 crisis. To feed children and their families, as well as all those facing hunger during this time, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is packing and distributing boxes of crisis response food. All crisis response boxes contain approximately 25 pounds of shelf-stable food as well as fresh milk, produce, and meat. To reduce barriers, the CPFB provides all crisis response food to its partners at no cost. The funding from the PNC Foundation will help underwrite the costs of procuring, packing, and distributing the crisis response food. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and PNC share a large footprint in central Pennsylvania. The food bank serves 27 counties, many of which overlap with PNC’s market, including Centre, Dauphin, Lancaster and York counties. Some of the work the food bank has been doing in these areas will be supported by the grant, including biweekly crisis response distributions across Harrisburg supported by the Harrisburg School District and the Harrisburg Police Department; weekly crisis response distributions by PowerPacks in Lancaster County, a partner of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; continuation of BackPack programs while schools remain closed in York County; and distribution of grab-and-go meals and crisis response boxes to youth feeding sites across Centre County. Families looking to access food in central Pennsylvania should visit www.centralpafoodbank.org and click on the Find Food feature. Families can also call the food bank’s Food Stamps Helpline at 877-999-5964.
