Quick Draw introduces different element of taste to community event
BY JEFF FALKArt and the outdoors go together like a brush and a canvas, like the Lititz Art Association and Venture Lititz, like Quick Draw and Taste of Lititz.

designed to enrich the community. Quick Draw and Taste of Lititz are a couple of simultaneous local happenings - an event within an event.
“Our goal with the Lititz Art Association is to foster and promote the arts and partner with other organizations which have similar purposes,” said Donna Felton, a board member of both the Lititz Art Association and Venture Lititz. “Venture Lititz and the Lititz Art Association are a natural combination; we work on projects together. All of the board members have their own specialties, and my role for Venture Lititz is for the arts.”
Held in conjunction with Venture Lititz’s tradition-rich Taste of Lititz street festival, Quick
Draw is a judged and timed art competition pitting local artists against one another for cash prizes. The Quick Draw contest will be held at the Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 7, and then the artists’ creations will be put up for display and sale. East Main Street will be blocked off from Water Street to Broad
Street for Taste of Lititz between 4 and 9 p.m.
Artists age 18 and older can preregister for the Quick Draw contest at www.lititzartassociation.com or up until 10 a.m. at the event.

BY JEFF FALKDetectives and patrolmen serve distinctly different roles in law enforcement. The positions demand different approaches.
But detectives and patrolmen are both police officers, committed to professionalism, public safety and teamwork.
A native of Lititz, Detective Cpl. Gary Rynier has been a Manheim Township police officer for 14 years. He’s been a detective for one year.
“Patrolmen are the face of the department,” said Rynier.
“They’re the initial responders to every call. Basically, they’re the ones who would do the triage. If it’s simple, they’ll do it. If the investigation is extensive, it comes back to the detectives, who have more time for that type of work.”
“(Detectives) would do an extensive follow-up,” continued Rynier. “There are tons of work that gets done behind the scenes. Patrol would do a quick field interview to identify witnesses. Here, we would do more extensive interviews and background checks. We’ll bring the case to a resolution. It’s a

A. Its festive, family-friendly atmosphere
B. Its wide assortment of delicious dishes
C. Manheim Township and its surrounding communities’ generous nature

If you guessed D, you’re correct.
Another ODC Food Truck Fest, the sixth, is right around the corner. And there are no reasons to believe that this one will be any less successful than the first five.
“I can’t think of anything more fun than eating,” said Ken Mueller, ODC’s public relations and development manager. “(The Food Truck Fest is) just a very exciting time. Once you get there, the vibe is so cool that you’re going to want to hang out. People are coming and checking out foods maybe they never had

This year’s ODC Food Truck Fest will be held on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Manheim Township’s Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Parking is available on surrounding streets and at Lancaster Catholic High School’s football stadium.
The sponsored event, which is free, will feature 15 food trucks from Lancaster, Columbia, New Holland, Lebanon, York, Red Lion and Mechanicsburg offering exotic cuisine from West Africa, Cambodia, Latin America, the Caribbean and India, as well as traditional favorites like ice cream, pizza and funnel cake. Patrons can vote on their favorite food trucks, and the one that receives the most votes will be recognized. All proceeds from the Food
Truck Fest will go to ODC’s continuing work to provide vocational training and employment opportunities for Lancaster County adults with development disabilities and the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department.
“Every year we try to make it better than the previous year,” said Mueller. “I want to generate more revenue and make it more exciting. But this is a food truck event. It’s all about the food trucks. The spotlight is on them. We want to have a really nice mix of foods. We don’t want to duplicate the cuisine.”
In addition to games, prizes, T-shirts and a DJ spinning tunes, the ODC Food Truck Fest will also offer a Touch-A-Truck display where kids can play on and have their photos taken with construction vehicles, a fire truck and police cruisers from Manheim Township. The Lancaster County Bookmobile will be on hand conducting hands-on activities.
Some 4,000 people are expected to attend. Mueller is
hoping the event raises $12,000.
“We want to help our clients find employment and bring more independence into their lives,” said Mueller. “We really want to make better lives for people with disabilities. We want to get them out into the community, just so they get to know people. It’s about the ability to earn a paycheck. If you can learn to do a job, find a job and get someone to pay you for it, there’s

Prizes will be awarded for show vehicles, and a 25-mile car cruise will follow the show. The event will also include live music provided by Beka Jones Music, homemade food and ice

The event is free of charge. It is organized as a way of giving back to the community and providing old-fashioned fun for people of all ages.

The Inside Track offers outstanding footwear, superior foot care
Healthy feet play a critical role in a body’s overall wellbeing, and the right shoes are an important factor in the health of feet. It’s that type of attention to detail and personal service that has become The Inside Track’s business trademark.
The Inside Track, a franchise dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in active footwear, is opening a new store at 1026 Lititz Pike, Lititz, on Saturday, June 1, not far from where the business was founded nearly 50 years ago. The festivities will begin at 9 a.m. and will include shoe demos, giveaways and games.
“Our goal is to get you into a proper-fitting shoe,” said Ryan Amway, one of the three co-owners of The Inside Track.
“Everything kind of starts with the feet and works up. It’s about the correct fit and style of shoe for what you’re looking to do. If you have the incorrect support for your feet, you could develop foot problems. If you’re exercising or on your feet a lot, you’re going to experience pain or discomfort. All these shoes are of a higher quality, and they have support built in. We believe there’s a perfect shoe for everyone.”
More than a sporting goods retailer or a running shoe purveyor, The Inside Track specializes in a wide variety of items related to feet, including orthotics, inserts, socks, apparel and activewear. But 70% of its focus is on shoes - all the top brands of sandals and sneakers.
The Inside Track’s customer-focused approach leads to repeat customers, loyalty and sometimes clients becoming friends.
“We’re not just trying to sell you something,” said Ryan.
“We’re trying to sell you things you need. I think people like that. We try to have the majority of popular colors and styles in stock, and if we don’t, we can get them in in a few days at no extra charge.”
Ryan’s father, Mark, a celebrated distance runner, took over operation of the original The Inside Track at 1659 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, in 1978. Eleven years later, the elder Amway opened a second location at 6301 Grayson Road, Harrisburg.
Then, in 2009, The Inside Track’s third store began welcoming customers at 6200 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg. Two years ago, Ryan and his brother, Tyler, along with their dad’s longtime manager, Zach Valentine, purchased the business from Mark.
“When my dad bought the store, there was no real place where you could find an assortment of higher-end athletic shoes,” said Ryan. “The need for a specific type of footwear was big. We’ve just kind of expanded on it, but we’ve stayed true to the vision. We’re trying to give people a reason to shop in person for shoes. We’re not any more expensive than anything you could find online, but we offer better personal service.”

Getting back in the game for a good cause
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAt any age, amputees and individuals born with limb loss or limb difference face many challenges. But children in America often face additional obstacles when seeking prosthetics and therapy due to a decreased likelihood that their family’s insurance will cover the cost. Nonprofit organization Iron Leg Corp. seeks to provide support for children in Lancaster County who are in need of assistance with obtaining prosthetics.
Iron Leg is one of the few organizations of its kind, and it will hold an equally unique fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. The event will begin at 7 p.m., and it will entail full-contact football games for individuals above the age of 34 and amputees who are 18 or older. Registration is available online for residents in any part of Lancaster County, and the football teams will be helmed by both former and current coaches from several local school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield, Solanco and Penn Manor.
Practices for the game will begin at the end of May; exact dates and additional information will be announced by Iron Leg once they are available. The registration fee will include equipment such as a uniform, a helmet and shoulder pads. Players are required to bring a seven-pad girdle and turf cleats. To register online, visit https:// ironleg.org/interest-form.
The primary goal of the fund raiser is to acquire the resources
that allow Iron Leg to provide financial support and to purchase prosthetics for children with limb loss or limb difference. Due to how quickly children outgrow prosthetics, insurance often will not cover the cost; if it does, it typically only allows the child to obtain a basic prosthetic that is unsuited for physical activities such as playing sports or hiking.
“Most of the time, insurance companies won’t pay for a $30,000 leg if the kid is going to grow out of it in within two years,” said Iron Leg co-founder Matt Millhouse. “But the thing is, that means the kids miss out on being more active. A basic leg will allow them to walk, but to us that’s not good enough. A kid can run track and field with a good leg.”
In addition to raising funds for children in the community, the goal of Iron Leg’s fundraiser is to give football players an opportunity to play one more game under the lights of the Millersville Marauders’ stadium. Not only do Millhouse and fellow Iron Leg co-founder Sean Laukhuff hope to engage adults who want to stay active and enjoy a full-contact football
match, but they also see the fundraiser as an opportunity for players’ children and grandchildren to see them out on the field.
“It was really cool to see the comradery among the coaches when we had our first meeting,” Laukhuff said. “When they coached for their school districts, they were always playing against each other. But now they’re on the same team, and they’re excited to plan out their plays and strategies.”
Sponsorship opportunities are available on Iron Leg’s website. To purchase a ticket to spectate the game, visit www.717shows.com/events/ iron-leg-football-game.

The Manheim Township Police Department is made up of 65 sworn officers, including six detectives, a detective sergeant and a detective lieutenant.
Last year as a department, Manheim Township handled 41,000 dispatches and wrote 22,000 reports. The criminal investigation division handled 325 cases.

“The characteristics that make you a good patrolman also make you a good detective,” said Rynier. “It’s an ability to communicate. Hard-working patrolmen who are willing to put in extra work and who want to be challenged more become detectives. But it’s a completely different world. As a patrolman, you’re interjecting yourself into situations that can be unstable, whereas a detective is almost always involved until everything is done.”
There are no special requirements to become a police detective, no certifications, no accreditations. Generally, patrolmen work their way up to becoming detectives through experience, hard work, successful track records and specific career paths. Perhaps most importantly, there has to be a desire to become a detective.
“In the end, we’re all just police officers,” said Rynier. “The teamwork,
that’s what decides the successful resolution of a case or not. As detectives, when we’re given a case, we rely on accurate information from the responding patrolmen. As far as detectives go, the group I work with is probably the best team I’ve ever been a part of. Everyone has a specialty.”
A graduate of Warwick High School, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and York College of Pennsylvania, Rynier completed his police academy training at Harrisburg Area Community College. After being hired by the Manheim Township Police Department, Rynier was named an officer in charge (OIC) in 2018 and selected as a detective in 2023.
“I’ve always been around law enforcement,” said Rynier. “I participated in track and field at York College. When I graduated, I missed the team atmosphere. I went looking for that team atmosphere in law enforcement.”
“I thoroughly enjoy doing detective work,” added Rynier. “It’s like putting a puzzle together of a picture that you never got to see. I like putting the pieces together and helping the victims. I like helping the people I work with.”
