When the approximately 350 members of the Warwick High School (WHS) Class of 2019 gather with family, friends, and school faculty and staff for commencement at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m., four students will speak at the gathering. Class president Oliver Lance will address the class, along with Heather Mitchell, Tony Rago, and Jocelyn Brechbill, who were selected by audition. Lance is the son of Wendy and Jay Lance of Lititz. He has titled his speech “Live Life in a World of Legos.” “I relate life to building with Legos,” explained Lance. “(One) can follow instructions to make the perfect Lego structure, but it’s much more fun when (one has) an idea (to) build something from the ground up. It is so

much cooler when you can build something of your own,” he said. In addition to serving as class president, Lance is the membership chair of National Honor Society (NHS). He is also a member of the French Honor Society, National English Oliver Lance Honor Society (NEHS), National Science Honor Society (NSHS), Tri-M Music Honor Society, UNITE, and the WHS swim team. He plays the cello in the school orchestra. After graduating, Lance plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh to study information systems, which combines business and

Warriors Fall in District Finals to Central Dauphin by Vaughn Brown

Warwick’s softball team took its 1-0 loss in the L-L League championship to Elizabethtown in stride and waited for the chance to make a run through the PIAA District Three Class 6A field. Once the tournament began, the lady Warriors stayed focused on the task at hand and marched into the title game beginning with a 1-0 victory over Central York in the quarterfinals and then a 4-1 win against Dallastown in the semis. In the finals, Warwick faced not only the defending District Three champs, but one of the state’s premier pitchers in D1 North Carolina State commit Samantha Gress. The Warriors, however, had Katelyn Minney and the sophomore wasn’t about to back down. “Lefty” proved that she definitely belonged on the rubber in the pressure cooker of a final, as did the rest of the Warriors’ squad, but it took only one run to decide the winner and that went to Central Dauphin which retained its Photo by Cheri Sine

crown with the 1-0 victory. Throwing 69 pitches to Gress’ 92, Minney struck out five and walked none in her five-hit outing while Gress retired 12 via strikeout and only surrendered three hits with three walks. Unfortunately, it was a wild pitch and not a hit that allowed the Rams to win. Gress, on third after reaching first on a fielder’s choice and then advancing on a single by Tyler White, scampered home on the miscue for the 1-0 advantage. Warwick opened the game with Minney retiring the side before Emily Beale (1-2) hit a one-out single and then took advantage of an error and a dropped third strike on Catie Brubaker to reach third with two outs, but then Danielle Jones popped out to second base to end the inning. The Warriors had two more scoring opportunities during the game, but failed to make the most of them. With one out in the second inning, Marissa Treibley, on first after coaxing a walk, advanced to second on a single by Mackenzie Stewart (1-3). A

passed ball allowed both to move up a base before Gress struck out the side. Then in the sixth inning, Beale walked with one out and moved to second on a bunt by Brubaker (1-3) but was caught stealing third for the second out which was significant because Jones then walked which would have loaded the bases with only one out. As it was, Treibley grounded out to third to end the threat, setting the stage for the lone run of the game. In order to reach the finals, Warwick first got by Central York in the quarters but needed extra innings to do it. Recording six hits through seven innings of play, it was the bat of Danielle Jones that delivered the seventh and final one of the game when she hit a walk off RBI single which scored Minney with the game

winner in the bottom of the eighth. The Panthers began the pressure filled final inning by turning up the heat when Emma Keller ended up on third with no outs after reaching base on a walk. She then proceeded to steal second and advanced further on a passed ball. Minney recorded the first out on a strikeout of Grace Hsei, but then Riley Drayer got on base via a bunt and reached second on defensive indifference before Minney struck out the side to preserve the scoreless tie. Warwick’s chance came in the bottom of the inning when, with one out, Minney (2-3) singled and then moved all the way around to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brubaker. Jones (2-4, RBI) came to the plate and, forcing seven pitches, battled to a 3-2 count before lining

made the score 4-0 before a Minney strikeout ended the inning. Warwick qualified for the PIAA championships as number two seed from District Three which sent three teams. They matched up with McDowell, the top seed from District 10 on Monday afternoon at Slippery Rock University. TRACK Capping off a stellar year, the Warwick girls’ track team claimed PIAA gold over Memorial Day weekend at Shippensburg University, adding its fourth straight first place team finish which includes Section, League, and District Three. During the state meet a PIAA, L-L League and two personal records were set as well “The best thing was they did it for their team and for their friends,” stated coach Alex Daecher. “All of the girls really wanted to do this for

championship back to their school. It was a very selfless act on all seven girls’ parts.” In all, the squad scored eight medals on the way to the meet best score of 44 points, well ahead of second place North Penn (29) and third place Strath Haven (26). Three of those were less than a second away from claiming a higher spot on the podium. Lily Palacio-Lewis, Meghan Quinn, Leah Graybill, and Emily Williamson ran an L-L League best time of 47.18 in the 400 which placed them second behind the team from Harry S. Truman High School which struck gold in 47.09. In the 1600, Jessica Williamson, Quinn, Emily Williamson, and Graybill’s fourth place effort of 3:53.16 fell just short of Strath Haven which placed third with a time of 3:53.06. Palacio-Lewis, Graybill, and Quinn finished an impressive second, third, and fourth in the 100 with respective times of 12.14, 12.23, and 12.33, while Graybill also finished third in the 200 with a time of 24.62, just behind Hayden Robinson of AvonworthNorthgate who finished second in 24.61. Most impressive was the fact that Graybill and Quinn ran a total of 19 races between preliminaries, semifinals, and final heats. Meanwhile, Kate Dickow not only ran a personal best time of 10:20.08 in

the 3200 to finish third overall, but all three of the top finishers broke the old PIAA record of 10:21.06 set by Pennsbury’s Sara Sargent in 2001. “Kate did an awesome job in her 3200. She broke the meet record and ran the best race of her life,” said Daecher. “I was very proud of her.” Julliette Delmotte, the seventh girl competing for Warwick, unfortunately did not record a distance in her triple jump attempts. The boys’ team, while not in medal contention, did have a PIAA medalist in Nate Good. He placed fourth overall in the high jump with a clearance of 6-7 and led a contingent of eight Warwick boys that competed over the weekend. Only the 3200 relay team of Jacob Smith, Noah Martin, Jeremy Bell, and Connor Shields joined Good in the finals, however, as the team placed 10th overall with a time of 7:55.56. Ending their meet in the preliminary heats were Shields who finished 14th in the 800 with a time of 1:58.78, Ryan Fegley in the 200 (17th, 22.40), and Sean Badessa, Fegley, Christian Hess, and Gurby Marcellus in the 400 (16th, 43.24). “The state meet was a pretty magical event,” added Daecher. “The girls and boys came to perform

Streaks to score all the runs it needed, Warwick answered with one of its own to cut the deficit to only two runs. Ethan Heller reached first after getting hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom half of the inning. After an Evan Rohrbach strikeout, a line drive single by Young (1-3) into left moved Heller to third who then scored on another line drive to the outfield, this time by Zach Shertzer (1-2, RBI) before a Brendan Martin strikeout ended the inning. With the score still 3-1 in Warwick’s half of the fifth, a walk to Martin and a single by Josh Farina (2-3) put runners on first and second with no outs for Colby Martin (1-4, RBI) who doubled into left field on the first pitch he saw. Martin scored to pull Warwick within one run while Farina moved to third, but with two runners in scoring position and no outs Warwick went down 1-2-3 to end the threat. Warwick’s final opportunity came in the sixth when with two outs, relief pitcher Colin Fitzgerald walked three straight batters to load the bases. Colby Martin then stepped to the plate and on the first pitch he saw, hit a line drive to Colin Yablonski at short for the put-out.

and did an outstanding job. I very proud of all of them.” The meet also marked the end of a six-year stint for Daecher as the head coach of the Warwick team. In addition to guiding the two squads to unrivaled success this season, he was also awarded the Pennsylvania girls’ coach of the year award from the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association. BASEBALL Warwick’s season came to an abrupt halt on Friday, May 24th at the hands of Section One rival Manheim Township during a PIAA District Three Class 6A quarterfinal matchup. The Blue Streaks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning and then held off the Warriors late in the game to clinch the victory. Leaving 11 runners on base, Warwick had trouble manufacturing runs while Manheim Township only recorded two hits the entire game with one coming against starting pitcher Dagen Young who surrendered all three runs before leaving the game after the second inning. Jackson Davies came on in relief and gave up only one hit over five innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Following a two-error second inning which allowed the Blue

game winning run. Minney recorded 13 strikeouts and walked only one in the complete game victory while Beale, Stewart, and Evie Clugston all added one hit at the plate. In their semifinal matchup with Dallastown, Warwick scored all four runs in the first inning but needed no more than that as the Wildcats only scored once in the second and managed two hits the entire game. The Warriors were good for five hits on the day. Warwick’s first two runs came courtesy of an error on a Brubaker ground ball that allowed her to reach second base and scored both Minney and Beale (2-3). A subsequent walk to Treibley (1-2), sandwiched between two strikeouts, brought Stewart (1-3) to the plate who then singled the bases loaded. Back-to-back walks

Historian To Present “Flying Dutchmen”

R040048

R037460

The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable will meet on Thursday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Author and historian Dr. Kathleen (Katie) Logothetis Thompson will present “The Flying Dutchmen.” The program will be free and open to the public. On May 2, 1863, at the Battle of Chancellorsville, the XI Corps of the Army of the Potomac earned a nickname that would stick to its soldiers for the rest of the war and long after. Fleeing in the face of Stonewall Jackson’s

infamous flank attack, the XI Corps was labeled the “Flying Dutchmen” and charged with cowardice by many outside their ranks. Thompson’s presentation will analyze the events of May 2, 1863, and explore whether the soldiers deserved this charge or if there was a failure of communication and leadership that placed the men in the path of Jackson’s wave of Confederates. Thompson earned her doctorate from West Virginia University in May 2017. Her research explores how Civil War soldiers attempted to cope with their wartime

experiences. She received a Bachelor of Arts in history from Siena College in her home state of New York and a Master of Arts in history from West Virginia University. Thompson has worked for the National Park Service at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park in Virginia, in addition to working on other academic and public history projects. For more information about the Lancaster Civil War Roundtable, readers may email lancastercivilwarroundtable@gmail.com, visit www.lancastercivilewarroundtable.org, or call Micky at 717-940-7411.

The programming is for beginners looking to add running to their personal fitness goals or recreation plans, as well as for more accomplished runners who are seeking to move on to a new competitive challenge. On Mondays through the summer and fall, a Running and Triathlon Club meets for peers to train together and to help mentor and motivate runners. New runners and athletes are welcome to join in Mondays at the Lititz recCenter from 7 to 8 p.m. There is a monthly participation fee. The center also provides haystack meals - similar to taco salads - for families and friends who have an interest in helping students with special needs. Sunny Sunbeam is one of seven centers that exist to give adults and children with special needs from the Plain community a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work, and to offer their families respite. The other centers are Caring Hearts, Penn Johns Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction. This year’s auction will be the 13th annual benefit, and it will be held on Monday, July 1, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of food items will be

9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day they attend. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, Sadie noted, adding that students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher

MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition -

The Lititz Public Library’s Kissel Hill location will turn 20 years old this year. On Saturday, June 8, the community is invited to attend a day of celebration of the library’s 20th anniversary. All events will be held rain or shine at the library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Starting at 10 a.m. and running until noon, the library will have special free activities for children of all ages. Children are invited to write or draw a message to the library with chalk on the sidewalks and play with bubbles. In addition, balloon art will be created and shared with children by Majik Andrew Entertainment. There will also be face painting and free popcorn and lemonade.

At noon, there will be a special opening of the library’s time capsule. The time capsule was given to the library in August 1999 by Abby Schreiter as part of a Girl Scout Cadet Silver Award project. Attendees at the 20th anniversary celebration will open the time capsule to see what was placed in it in 1999 and then fill it with a new set of memorable items from 2019 to be resealed for another 20 years. Throughout the afternoon, a special photography display will be available for viewing. The display will detail the library’s history and show how far the library has come as a community hub. The display will be available for viewing until 2:30 p.m.

The Moonlighters Big Band will play a concert from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the library’s community room. The Moonlighters Big Band is based in Lititz. Most band members are from Lititz and the surrounding communities and range in age from their 20s to their 80s. The ensemble’s library includes tunes from the great big band leaders of the 1930s, 1940s, and other eras, such as Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Les Brown, Harry James, and others. CLASSIFIEDS

Strawberry Social Planned Pool To Mark The Old Zion Church, 187 Reifsnyder Road, Homemade chicken corn soup will be To mark the unofficial start of summer for area students and school families, Lititz recCenter invites area residents to bring a friend to Lititz Springs Pool on the last day of school for Warwick School District students. On Tuesday, June 11, weather permitting, the pool will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Between noon and 5 p.m., Lititz Springs Pool members can bring a guest to the pool at no charge and every paying guest purchasing a day pass can bring another guest at no charge. Volunteers from the Warwick Education Foundation (WEF) will serve popsicles between 1:30 and 3 p.m. to celebrate the end of the students’ successful school year. Members and guests are encouraged to pick up lunch downtown and bring it along to the pool for a picnic. Delivery to the pool gate from downtown restaurants is welcome at the pool. Lititz Springs Pool will remain open daily from noon to 8 p.m. as weather permits through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. Seasonal pool memberships are available to purchase through Lititz recCenter for families, youths, and seniors. Guest passes are available each day for purchase at the pool gate.

Many community programs and events are hosted at Lititz Springs Pool through the summer. Swimming lessons for children will be offered on weekday mornings in June and July. The Lititz Springs swim team will host practice on weekday mornings and host swim competitions throughout the summer. A number of special events are scheduled, including monthly moonlight swims and the annual National Night Out with Lititz Borough Police in August. The Lititz recCenter Triathlon will occur on Sunday, Aug. 4. Lititz Springs Pool has been in operation since 1964, when a small group of citizens and the Lititz Jaycees purchased land for $18,500 from Roy Buch in order to build a community pool. The complex grew to include three separate pools. Lititz Borough and Lititz recCenter plan to renovate the pool complex after the 2019 summer pool season. Significant contributions from the community are making the renovation possible. More information about seasonal memberships and Lititz Springs Pool activities can be found at www.lititzrec.com or by calling the Lititz recCenter at 717-626-5096.
