In 2016, House of His Creation (HOHC) became Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM). Shortly thereafter, the ministry moved from its location on Lititz Pike to 541 W. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. At the time, House of His Creation still existed as a maternity home on the new property, serving women age 18 and older. Loving and Caring Resources, which also came under the FORM umbrella, held on-site classes including The Parenting Journey and the Beautiful You events. In December 2019, the ministry decided to make another change. “We will be back to solely operating as HOHC,” read a letter from Matthew Neff, executive director. Loving and

Caring Resources services will continue to be present and active at the site. Callie Neff, housing support specialist with HOHC, explained the transition. “We had become more of a teaching, training, and equipping kind of ministry (as FORM),” she noted. “We wanted to focus back on our primary mission, which is housing.” Over the nearly 50 years since HOHC was founded, the ministry mainly offered maternity housing with a mother and child component. The Neffs served at the house on Lititz Pike in that capacity. “ We were living with young teen moms,” recalled Callie, “(but) who was calling (for help) changed.” Women who are in need of help now are usually between the ages of 18 to 24 and come from a variety of See Filling The Gap pg 5

Sustainability Fund and $6 million in free PPE, the two key programs in phase one of the Economic Recovery Plan. Starting on June 8, county-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees can now register at the aforementioned website for kits with PPErelated items including face masks, hand sanitizer and thermometers. The supply is significant and is intended to serve most of Lancaster County’s small businesses. The site’s grant application portal opened to Lancaster County-based businesses with 20 or fewer employees on June 15; it will remain open through 6:59 p.m. on Friday, June 19. Grants will not be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis; individuals have through June 19 to submit applications. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. The first phase of the funding program will offer grant opportunities totaling $10 million. In subsequent phases of the plan, the Recovery & Sustainability Fund is expected to offer an additional $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster Countybased businesses with 100 or fewer employees. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government.

greater than expected. Funds were drained in just a few days after launch and the SBA stopped accepting applications. While many banks followed the SBA’s lead and stopped taking applications between the first and second rounds of government funding, Northwest took a different approach. In hopes that the PPP would be funded for a second round, the bank continued to help clients gather and prepare application information for submission. Because of this approach, Northwest was ready to submit applications when the SBA’s loan portal reopened. According to Reitzes, nearly 100% of the PPP loan applications that Northwest received were approved by the SBA - a total of 3,700 loans that will provide more than $425 million worth of relief. Northwest’s efforts served employers of all sizes across a wide span of entities, including manufacturing, restaurants, religious organizations, professional services, beauty salons and contractors. These efforts helped protect more than 35,000 employees. Northwest Bancshares Inc. is the holding company of Northwest Bank. Like banks across the country, Northwest Bank (NWBI), headquartered in Warren, has been working to help small businesses curb the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As soon as the Small Business Administration (SBA) released guidance to banks on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Northwest teams assembled to analyze the details and develop an open, client-friendly approach to the application process, no matter a business’s industry or size. The company launched a number of ways to connect with clients and work with them to collect the necessary application information, according to Mark Reitzes, Northwest’s head of commercial banking. Clients applying through Northwest could either connect one-on-one with a business banker, who helped to gather the information required by the SBA, or submit their loan package through Northwest’s online application portal. “As soon as our portal opened, the company’s business bankers proactively reached out to clients to let them know that the bank was ready to take applications, Reitzes said. “We provided checklists, a step-by-step video and FAQs to ensure they fully understood the relief program and requirements. We received applications from businesses of all sizes and industries across our entire four-state footprint. Despite Northwest’s efforts, nationwide demand was much

PSPCA from pg 1 To ensure safety of the PSPCA Lancaster staff and the public, all pet food pantry pickups are done without physical contact. Families in need of assistance are asked to email lancaster@pspca.org, after which they will be contacted to determine their specific needs. They will then be given a time to pick up food at the center. The food is bundled and left outside the building with the identifying information of its recipients. “There has always been a need for access to pet food, but

through this pandemic that need has increased dramatically,” said PSPCA Lancaster Center site director Lindsay High. “It is always our goal to support families and keep pets happy and healthy in their homes. Through this health and economic crisis, we are more dedicated than ever.” A fund has been created to purchase pet food and essential supplies. Donations will be used to continue the PSPCA’s efforts to provide resources for pet owners in need. Those who would like to contribute may visit www.pspca.org /communitypetfund.

The PSPCA is a nonprofit organization headquartered at 350 E. Erie Ave., Philadelphia. Virtual “Walk Special Needs Auction from pg 1 Run For Life” Raises Funds Align Life Ministries (formerly Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services) concluded its 34th annual Walk Run for Life on May 9. More than 200 registered individuals participated in the virtual event and either walked, ran a 5K, or did another form of fun activity to support the event. So far, more than $235,000 has been raised toward the $255,000 goal, and donations and pledges are still being processed. These funds help the ministry provide immediate lifesustaining services to families in need. The organization recently delivered essential baby supplies to a young mother of an infant, and then she enrolled in virtual parenting classes with her client advocate. Next year’s Walk Run for Life will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at The Junction Center in Manheim. Readers may visit www.facebook.com/align lifeministries to view event photos and www.youtube .com/watch?v=N9rabr -vHCI&t=9s to view the closing video. caregivers works with the students. All the centers were closed in March under COVID-19 restrictions, but organizers of the centers hope to reopen them in the late summer or fall. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction. This year’s auction will be the 15th annual benefit, and it will be held on Monday, July 6, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of food items will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. Quilts will be sold beginning at 4 p.m. Among the items that have been gathered for the auction are flowers and plants, toys, and chests. Large specialty items, including swing sets, sheds, and carriages, will be sold beginning at 6 p.m. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. The centers offer a variety of activities for students. At Sunny Sunbeam, located in Georgetown, the students gather three days a week from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day. Guided by up to five teachers, the students begin

their days with devotions and then spend time in song. They make keychains and rolled-candy dolls. They also assemble hygiene kits for Mennonite Central Committee, and newspaper is torn up to create animal bedding. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, and students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they have learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes lunch, and students are welcome to bring desserts or other courses. On nice days, lunch may be eaten outside in a fenced yard behind the center. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard. Presently, organizers of the auction report that the parents and scholars really miss the centers. The closing has made it harder for the parents, and the students miss being out of the home with other people. “The special adults cannot wait until they may go back (to the centers),” reported auction organizer Ben Kauffman. Readers who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-768-8497, 717-442-4144, or 717-354-2380. The auction number on the day of the sale will be 717-983-8415.

Filling The Gap from pg 1 some of the rooms are designated for ministry purposes for women escaping (exploitation, human trafficking, or abuse),” said Callie. “They need that first stop to work through the crisis and figure out what’s next.” Matthew noted that as apartments become available, more will be open to the increased need for women in the Manheim, Ephrata, Warwick, and Manheim Township areas who have been seeking help in the last year. Once the crisis has passed, the ministry can help a woman begin to work toward goals. “It may be finding a program or housing,” said Callie. Matthew added that a woman need not have children to turn to the ministry for help, but he noted that children are often a motivating factor in leaving an unsafe situation. “(We can offer a place) for her and the children to sleep safely, and they have the chance to plan the future while being out of the (unsafe) circumstances,”

Matthew said. Callie summed up the changes in the ministry, saying, “It has expanded beyond the limitation of calling just because of a pregnancy. A lot of the same factors are at work in the lives of these women, and the path to finding a way out is generally the same.” She added that a safe place and healthy supports are available to clients of HOHC. “We have the added bonus of the years of experience walking through pregnancies. That’s been our foundation,” she said. Current needs of the ministry include new doors for the apartments. “I would love to have a new door campaign,” said Matthew. “Doors cost up to $300 each, and we need 14 for six apartment units.” He noted that individuals could sponsor a single door or builders could donate excess inventory. Readers who would like more information about the ministry may visit www.hohc.org.

Guests may enter the viewing lot beginning at 6:30 p.m., and the film will begin at dusk.
