Annual Antiques Show To Support Mueller House By Ann Mead Ash
“The importance of the Johannes Mueller House to current day Lititz is strong,” said Henry Paul, a member of the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) and an organizer of the LHF 2019 Antiques Show. Citing the stone portion of the Mueller House erected in 1792, Paul pointed out that section is actually an addition to an earlier log dwelling that forms the most western portion of two attached buildings. “The log attachment is the oldest standing home in Lititz, erected in 1740 by John George Klein, (who was the home’s) first resident,” noted Paul. The LHF Antiques Show, which has been held since the early 1960s, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, at Warwick Middle School, 104 Maple St., Lititz. On June 28, the 57th annual show will run from 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m., and on June 29, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plenty of free parking will be available. Funds raised by the event help maintain the Mueller House. The show is known to offer diversity among the items that will be available for sale. “There will be scads of smalls, mediums, and larges too,” said Paul. “(The show will) include plenty of Americana, country primitives, and sufficient unexpected offerings to keep even the most seasoned shoppers interested and surprised.” Organizers note that in 2019, attendees will find weathervanes, Christmas and holiday items, country furniture in first generation paint, wooden carvings, butter prints, redware, signs, blue decorated stoneware, textiles, wrought iron implements, decoys, hooked rugs, fraktur, and tramp art. Children age 12 and under will be able to enter for free when accompanied by adults who have purchased tickets. He reported that according to www.feedingamerica.org, 1 in 8 people, including 1 in 6 children, struggle with hunger in Pennsylvania. “In Lancaster County, approximately 59,000 residents, including 1 in 5 children, go hungry on a regular basis,” Fliszar remarked. “Additionally, those depending on food pantries are coming from all walks of life,” he continued. “Looking at the bigger picture, food insecurity not only affects these individuals, it can have a negative impact on the entire community.” Following the festival, the FoodStock board of directors will determine where to disburse the proceeds so they do the most good. Past recipients have included the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, PowerPacks, the Manheim Central Food Pantry, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, and Warwick Community Chest. To do so, the teams created a game gizmo using technical elements that would cause something to happen during the game. The teams also designed a container that would hold all of their props; the container needed to transform in some way during their presentation. excited about the bands that will perform at the event. “We’ve got a great music lineup this year,” Hayden enthused. “Some of the area’s most talented musicians are coming together to help us fight hunger in our community. Straight out of Philly, Mo Lowda & The Humble recently returned from their European tour, and we’re excited to have them join us.” Mo Lowda & The Humble is the event’s headliner band. The group, which is best known for its progressive songwriting and energetic live performances, is new to FoodStock, Fliszar said. The other bands on the event lineup have played at FoodStock at one time or another. Steel Radiance has been part of the event since the beginning, performing classic rock and blues. Hydroponic Philharmonic, a Grateful Dead tribute band, is back for its second year. Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra is also bringing its big band sound back for another year. Back In Motion, a horn-based band specializing in rock and soul music, is returning to FoodStock after a brief hiatus. The Ogham Stones will bring Celtic rock with a kick to the music festival. others for help ... but God humbled me.” Metzler shared about his experience in celebration of one year of survivorship during the opening ceremony as the 2019 Honorary Survivor at the 26th annual Relay For Life of Lancaster County at Conestoga Valley High School. “I will forever be in debt to all the people who surrounded me in my weakest moments with prayers, meals, cards of encouragement, visits, and phone calls,” said Metzler to the audience gathered around the track at the school. “(Relay For Life) is a special time to honor those who have lost their fight with cancer and support those who are fighting cancer today.” Relay For Life of Lancaster County kicked off on the evening of June 7, with 112 teams and more than 1,000 total participants taking turns walking around the track overnight until a closing ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on June 8. This year’s event raised more than $672,462 for the American Cancer Society. Organizer Stephanie Delp noted that the Lancaster event is the second-largest in the nation in terms of total funds raised. Delp said that she always looks forward to the opening ceremony, which includes a survivor lap. Cancer survivors - whether diagnosed a few days or a dozen or more years ago - are invited to take a lap around the track as the crowd cheers them on. A Caregiver Lap held later in the evening honors those individuals who have stood by their loved ones on their journeys with cancer. The 2019 Honorary Caregiver was Cheyanne Leid of New Holland. At the recent Relay, luminarias emblazoned with the names of people who have died of cancer surrounded the track, and a special luminaria ceremony took place at dusk to remember those lives touched by cancer.
Members of The Ziggy Zone team (pictured) marched in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County in memory of Allan James “Ziggy” Ziegler. More than 1,000 participants walked at the track at Conestoga Valley High School on June 7 and 8 to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Dr. David Cziperle, a thoracic surgeon with the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, spoke to the audience before the luminarias were lit and the names of those being honored were read. “It’s very moving,” described Delp. “Really the best way to say it is that Relay For Life is not an event; it’s an experience.” Plenty of fun activities were peppered into the mix to spur walkers on as they persevered through the night, including a movie on a big screen, games and relays, frozen T-shirt and Twister competitions, yoga and Zumba, children’s entertainment, trivia, crafts, and themed laps like Ready for Beddie and Here Comes the Sun. Music was blasting for the duration of the event, with live performances by Matt Wheeler, Mandy Salimbeni, Dreadnought Brigade, Peggy Kurtz Keller, Black Cat Band, and Leo DiSanto of Vinegar Creek Constituency. Many Relay teams are made up of cancer survivors or individuals who have family and friends who are survivors or who have
lost their battle with the disease. Others, like Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute oncology nurse Julie Justice, know innumerable people affected by cancer. This was the eighth year that Justice participated in the Relay For Life. She served as team captain for the 52-member Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health team, which raised more than $22,735. “It’s very rewarding to see our patients that are survivors at the walk and to be able to celebrate their journey with them,” Justice said. “Cancer patients are a very special population. They’ve got resilience.” Relay For Life got its start in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., to raise money for the American Cancer Society. He raised $27,000, and the following year 19 teams took part in a similarly styled fundraising event and raised $33,000. Antiques Show from pg 1 been recruited for this year’s event. “The show will feature 57 dealers from seven states, our largest dealer count ever,” said Paul. Dealers are known to travel from neighboring states, including New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Maryland, and Delaware. Food items available for purchase at the show will include home-baked goods based on traditional family recipes. Whole pies and cakes will be available, as will items sold by the piece to be enjoyed on-site with coffee or tea. In addition, food items that will be available for purchase will include sub sandwiches, salads, and pizza. In addition to its age and historical significance, the Mueller
House is important to Lititz architecture and the mission of the LHF, explained Paul. “(The house is) an authentic version of the way it appeared both inside and out as erected in 1792,” said Paul. “(It) is an untouched example of building techniques and conventions brought straight from the Palatine region of Germany, Switzerland, and Moravia by early and mid-18thcentury immigrants.” Paul added that the Mueller House is an especially pure example of such building conventions. “These conventions are the roots of what Lititz was and remains,” he said. Paul stated that in the last few months, the interior of the Mueller House was repainted at
a substantial cost to LHF. Each year, the house requires gutter work, power washing, window and shutter repairs, and maintenance for heating and cooling issues. There is a cost to attend the show, but discounts are available for those who obtain a hard copy show card, clip ads from trade journals, or display electronic images from www.lititzhistorical foundation.com or www.lititz antiqueshow.org. Children age 10 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The middle school is handicapped accessible.
