Candle Queen Event Will Carry On Lititz Tradition By Ann Mead Ash

While the annual festivities, including a fireworks display and July Fourth gathering in Lititz Springs Park, have been canceled for this year, organizers intend to mark the 203rd year of the July Fourth celebration by holding the 79th annual Queen of the Candles pageant. The private ceremony, which will involve 12 contestants along with a crown bearer and flower girl, will take place on Saturday, July 4, at 5 p.m. and will be open to the families of the contestants. Blue Ridge Cable 11 will broadcast the event. Following the ceremony, organizers have planned a procession of Corvettes carrying the girls

around the main streets of Lititz with a police escort. The court was chosen by a vote of the Warwick High School (WHS) Class of 2020, and all the members are recent WHS graduates. The 2020 Candle Queen contestants are Emily Bromirski, Amelia Brown, Rylee Diffenderfer, Lauren Epps, Julia Eshleman, Michelle Gibble, Carlie Martin, Lily Palacio-Lewis, Meghan Quinn, Piper Van Dore, Jasmine Weaver, and Liliana Weidman. Adalynn Dullinger will serve as flower girl, and Owen McClenahan will be the crown bearer. Jocelyn Brechbill, 2019 Queen of Candles, will be present to take part in the ceremony. Each candidate will be escorted by her father. Emily is the daughter of Mike and

Sarah Bromirski. At WHS she was involved in Unite, Interact, PALS, Link Crew, and Student Council. She was a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), English National Honor Society (ENHS), and Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS), and she served as president of the Science National Honor Society. Emily was captain of the Warriorettes Dance Team. Outside school, she is part of a competitive dance company, where she is a volunteer assistant dance teacher. She plans to attend Penn State University’s main campus to study biology and eventually become a genetic counselor. Amelia is the daughter of Steve and Brooke Brown. At WHS, Amelia was a team captain for the Warwick girls’ See Candle Queen Event pg 2

May was National Pet Month, and Mulberry Art Studios had put together an array of artists, vendors, treats for pets and their humans, rescue animals ready for adoption, and more to celebrate. Unfortunately, the second annual “We Love Our

Pets” art show had to be pushed back and was rescheduled for July. July is right around the corner and Lancaster County recently moved into the yellow phase, but large gatherings are still not allowed to take place. While most of the studio’s spring and summer art offerings have been postponed to later in the year, owner April Koppenhaver and curator Stephanie Cole were determined to make the show still happen. Koppenhaver and Cole have created an online gallery show - a virtual exhibit that will showcase artwork and hopefully still raise funds for their animal rescue partner, The Sebastian Foundation. The virtual exhibit will be hosted at www.mulberry artstudios.com and will feature about 150 pieces of art featuring beloved furry friends from more than 80 local artists, half of whom are youths. A variety of media will be represented. The exhibit will go live on First Friday, July 3. Viewers will be able to vote for People’s Choice in both adult and youth categories. A Best of Show will be chosen by the studio. The exhibit and See Art Show pg 4

Slow Ride Takes Aim At Promoting Local Businesses By Ann Mead Ash

Rebecca Branle, owner of Bikeworks, located in Lititz, has organized the Small Business Slow Ride, which will run until Tuesday, June 30. The event is designed to bring shoppers to downtown Lititz as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

In the spring, right after COVID-19 restrictions were put in place, Rebecca Branle, owner of the Lititz Bikeworks, located at 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., No. 11, Lititz, and her crew were thinking about things they might do when the quarantine orders were lifted. “It was really quiet here in March,” recalled Branle, who noted that none of the shop employees knew what to expect in the future. “We knew we had time we aren’t always afforded, so we thought, ‘How can we use this time to be prepared for what’s to come?’” Branle said the employees talked about what they would need to do when it was time to reopen and have customers come into the shop again, but they also thought about fellow merchants that were not named essential businesses. “We knew we would bring in income fixing bicycles,” noted Branle. “(But then) we thought about (all the businesses) on Main Street that weren’t able to do anything.” Out of those discussions came an idea. “We thought, ‘Instead of throwing a big (reopening) event, why not work See Slow Ride pg 7

The event will take place at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Tee times will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. Reservations have been transferred to July 24 for those who had already committed as sponsors or golfers for the June 5 event. The needs of Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) clients and their families have not decreased during this mandatory closure. Clients are staying safe by staying home, but this change puts pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. Proceeds from the golf outing will help Landis ADS to prepare for clients’ return when the service is permitted to open. Registrations for sponsors and golfers will be accepted until Friday, July 10. Siloam Ethiopia To Host Drive-Through Meal

Art Show from pg 1 voting will be open through the end of July. The idea for “We Love Our Pets” grew from the love of one dog, Milo. Milo was rescued when he was a few years old and adopted by Koppenhaver’s nephew. Eventually, the nephew could no longer care for Milo, so the beagle mix was invited to live at Mulberry Art Studios, where he became the organization’s unofficial mascot. “Milo was an absolute gem,” Koppenhaver recalled. “He greeted all of our guests with his friendly warm tail wag or thump of the tail on the floor, his big brown eyes shining brightly. He would then proceed to go to our office and begin snoring.” Koppenhaver’s late husband, Charles E. Gaul II, enjoyed Milo’s company as well. “I often thought Milo was as much of a blessing to Charlie as Charlie was to Milo,” Koppenhaver recalled. Milo died in November 2018, and less than two

months later, Gaul passed away at age 93. Koppenhaver created the “We Love Our Pets” art show in memory of Gaul and Milo. “Our pets and our partners make a profound difference in our lives, and we wanted to raise money for an organization dedicated to bringing pets and people together,” Koppenhaver said. The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and facilitates the adoption of unwanted animals, offering a second chance to pets. The foundation is committed to compassion toward other living beings and aims to create a better world by educating the public about the welfare of animals. Ellen Stark, a volunteer for The Sebastian Foundation, commented, “We hope that by learning about us and how an individual can get involved, we will be able to welcome more volunteers into our group as well as potentially connecting one of our sweet dogs with

“Business Pup With a Business to Run,” acrylic on canvas, by fourth-grader Nathaniel Cole their forever family.” Stark noted that proceeds from the art show will help The Sebastian Foundation provide food, bedding, and veterinary care to animals that may have been neglected or abused. “We rely on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future,” she said. Amid starting a new nursing job in York, volunteering at a community health center in Elizabethtown, and running an international medical ministry, Wegayhu Ketema found time to cook and freeze 100 pounds of onions earlier this month. Preparing the bulb vegetables is one of the most time-consuming parts of cooking the meals that have funded Siloam Ethiopia, the organization that Ketema and her husband, pastor Demeke Getahun, created to provide muchneeded medical care in her hometown of Harar, Ethiopia. Ketema expects to use half of the onions at a fundraising meal on Saturday, June 27, at Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster,

175 Church St., Landisville. The other half is slated for use at another meal in August. Rather than the usual sit-down dinner that Siloam Ethiopia hosts quarterly, the June 27 event will be conducted as a drive-through. Hot food will be available from 1 to 7 p.m. Vehicles should enter the church property on Camp Meeting Road and exit onto Church Street. Individuals who interact with volunteers are asked to wear masks, and the volunteers will be masked as well. The menu will contain the traditional dishes of doro wat, a spicy stew made with chicken, hardboiled eggs, onions, and the fiery, red spice blend known as berbere; atkilt wat, a mixture of root vegetables and cabbage; lentils; and split peas. The sour, fermented flatbread

known as injera will accompany the meal. Donations will be accepted for the dinners, and the proceeds will be used to fund COVID-19 education in Harar. “It’s really hitting Ethiopia hard,” Ketema said. “They’re afraid July and August will be the worst months.” In May 2018, Siloam Ethiopia opened a medical clinic that offers free care to the poorest residents of Harar. From there, the organization established satellite clinics in rural schools, and visiting nurses also have begun to provide care in elder homes and neighborhoods of homeless people. “It’s amazing, looking back, how much we have accomplished just by cooking Ethiopian food,” Ketema commented. “God is really good.” With schools closed, the satellite clinic visits have been suspended, and the nurses are now focusing on the elder homes and COVID-19 education. They are working to make sure residents know about the importance of social distancing, regular handwashing, and wearing masks. The nurses are distributing no-sew masks made from socks along with soap and other handwashing supplies. Their supplies are limited, however, and Siloam Ethiopia would like to restock to help more people. The ministry depends on fundraisers and donations to operate. “If people don’t give, we can’t serve,” Ketema remarked. Thanks to contributions this year, Siloam Ethiopia was able to purchase a complete blood count machine for the clinic’s laboratory, but it is currently in Addis Ababa and a company representative is unable to travel to provide training. In addition to financial contributions, Siloam Ethiopia is currently accepting donations of masks for distribution in Harar. Ketema noted that Ethiopian Airlines will transport personal protective equipment for free. Anyone who would like to support Siloam Ethiopia through donations or by purchasing meals may email siloamethio @gmail.com. Reservations are requested but not required. LOHF Creates New Collabortive Dr. David Rowe He is a member of on-site review teams for the University Senate of the United Methodist Church. Rowe plans to move temporarily to Lancaster while serving as the seminary’s interim president.

Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) announced the first eight organizations to join the new LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative (LCSC) in response to the need for more child/youth mental health care professionals in Lancaster County. The initiative is funded for three years, in part by a grant from the Steinman Foundation. The collaborative will equip mental health professionals to take on supervisory roles and will provide a post-master’s

clinical fellowship program for license-eligible providers to receive supervision required for licensing. The LCSC is slated to begin in July with its inaugural participants: Community Services Group, TEAMcare Behavioral Health, Laurie Schein, Commonwealth Clinical Group, Thoughtful Wellness, Matters of the Heart Counseling, Diversity Works, and Focus Counseling Services. The LCSC believes that

investing in the talent pipeline for behavioral health will result in stronger behavioral health organizations and competent supervisors who can mentor their staff. The LCSC adds that trained supervisors can effectively recruit and retain clinical staff, reducing patient caseloads, improving recruitment and retention, and lowering staff turnover rates. For more information on the LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative, readers may visit www.lohf.org/LCSC.

In addition to his Master of Divinity, Rowe’s academic credentials include a Ph.D. in educational policy studies from Georgia State University, a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Southwestern University in Texas, and a Certificate in Ecumenical Studies from the University of Geneva. An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, he has also worked as a hospital chaplain and youth minister. The Lancaster Theological Seminary board of trustees has appointed Dr. David Rowe to serve as the graduate school’s interim president until a permanent president is hired. Rowe, of Windermere, Fla., will take on his new role on Wednesday, July 1, following the retirement of the Rev. Dr. Carol E. Lytch after nine years. With Rowe’s appointment, the board of trustees now will focus on the launch of a nationwide search for a permanent president to lead the 195-year-old seminary. During a 25-year career in higher education, Rowe has served as president of Centenary College of Louisiana, vice president of both LaGrange College and Wesleyan College in Georgia, and director of advancement and planning at Oxford College of Emory University. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary Has A New Home By Francine Fulton

In order to better accommodate its current group of rescued cows, sheep, goats, pigs and other farmed animals, as well as to provide space for even more animals in need, the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary recently relocated to a larger facility. The nonprofit sanctuary, founded in the summer of 2017 by Sarah Salluzzo and Jonina Turzi, was previously located at 558 Milton Grove Road South in Elizabethtown. The sanctuary’s new address is 1871 Milton Grove Road, Mount Joy. Although the new location is only 2 miles away from the previous farm, the new property has much more pasture space. “The previous farm was about 5 acres but only 3 was habitable, because there was a creek and wetlands, explained board member Sara Petrosky. “The new farm is

almost 18 acres, and almost all of it is pasture. The biggest benefit of the new location is that the sanctuary will not have to turn down as many requests by area police, humane workers and others who are seeking help for farmed animals in life-or-death situations. “ We have people asking almost daily, ‘Can you take in this animal?’ A lot of times the requests are by the police. We also get calls from good Samaritans or neighbors, Petrosky noted. “(The new location) will enable us to take in a lot more animals so we don’t have to say no so often. She noted that when an animal first comes to the farm, it is examined by a veterinarian before it is allowed to have contact with the other animals. Animals that cannot be accommodated are referred to partnering sanctuary organizations. One of the site’s newest resident is Orville, a small lamb, who suffers from a bone infection and is currently on medication. “He couldn’t keep up with the other lambs, and someone brought him to the farm, Petrosky explained. “We do the ‘Great Orville Watch’ where volunteers sit with him in two-hour segments. Other residents of the farm include two pigs, Willa and Charlotte, who were found by humane police officers locked in a small shed; two dairy cows named Bess and Truehart; and even a chicken

that fell off a truck and was left abandoned. “We have about 50 animals now, including chickens, goats, cows, sheep and ducks, two turkeys and different kinds of pigs, Petrosky stated. “We know their names and their personalities; they are just like kids. Volunteers work at the farm in shifts to take care of the animals, which includes feeding them and performing maintenance and cleaning chores. Volunteers also spend time building relationships with the animals since the sanctuary is the animals’ forever home. “We are not like other rescues where they are looking for homes for the animals, Petrosky pointed out. “In our case, they all come to live here for the rest of their lives. The sanctuary is an all-volunteer organization, and it relies on community donations to pay for veterinarians’ services, food for the animals, bedding and ongoing care. Additionally, the sanctuary recently launched a capital campaign to finance the construction of a new barn and fencing at the site, which will cost approximately $120,000. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, tours of the site were offered every Saturday from May through October. “Since the isolation started in mid-March, we have been doing virtual tours that have been widely viewed, Petrosky said. “We also have bedtime stories with the animals on Thursday and Sunday nights at 7:30 p.m., where we read children’s books to our baby goats and sheep. The farm also offered a yoga program that included a onehour class followed by a 30minute walking tour of the

want to make sure it’s a different merchant each day, (because) we want to spread the love as much as possible, said Branle. Originally, Branle had hoped the ride would be a group event held on a single day. “ We thought by June 13, we would be back to normal, said Branle, who noted that the restriction on groups larger than 25 meant it would not be possible for the several hundred people interested in taking part in the ride to do it together. “It’s a bummer not to be able to ride shoulder-to-shoulder, said Branle. “There’s something really special about being in a group knowing that you’re all doing something that is going to make someone else’s life better. Branle, however, turned her disappointment into strategy. “I thought we could have a stronger impact if we extended this over two weeks and said, ‘Go when it’s convenient for you and go often,’ she said. Branle noted that Lititz merchants should be open to allowing cyclists to lock their bikes outside their locations. “There are some bike racks around town, but bikes can be locked on trees, said Branle. “If a merchant knows you’re inside spending money and you park your bike near the shop, that’s fine. Readers who would like more information may search for “Lititz Bikeworks or “Small Business Slow Ride on Facebook.

together with everyone else?’ Branle said. The result is the Small Business Slow Ride, which began on June 13 and will run until Tuesday, June 30. The event asks cyclists and others to go into downtown Lititz. “We’d love you to ride your bicycle to town, but this is far less about bicycles and far more about people, read the invitation Bikeworks posted on Facebook on June 8. Organizers ask those visiting Lititz to eat at a local restaurant or purchase an item from a local business and then take a picture. “Let us know that you went, said Branle. Participants should take a photo at the merchant’s location and post it to social media. “Tag that merchant, said Branle, who noted that participants should also tag Lititz Bikeworks and use the hashtag #smallbusinessslowride. Each posted photo that tags Lititz Bikeworks will be an entry into a contest Bikeworks will hold. “If you shop at multiple retailers, make sure to take multiple pictures. We’ll put your name in a bowl for each entry, read the invitation. Branle stressed that those who do not feel safe going out may shop local businesses online and post a photo. On Wednesday, July 1, Bikeworks will begin choosing one winner each day from the entries, and the shop will reward each winner with a $100 gift certificate to the local Lititz merchant of his or her choice. “We

JBT, Employees Partner To Support Food Bank Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. (JBT) announced that the bank, together with its employees, recently donated a total of $1,300 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. The bank’s Community Involvement Committee encouraged all JBT employees to make personal contributions to the community-support initiative. Through the bank’s Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) Employee Match Program, JBT matched the employees’ donation amount to provide the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank with a total donation of $1,300. The committee selected the local charitable organization because of its positive impact and ability to provide immediate relief to residents in need. Ed Martel, JBT’s chief operating officer, explained that the CRA Employee Match Program is designed to support employees who have an active role in community organizations and to give financial support to initiatives designed to help develop and sustain the areas where employees live and work.
