23rd Bike And Hike To Aid Family Services By Ann Mead Ash
Inclement weather interfered with the 22nd annual COBYS Bike and Hike held in 2018. The bicycle and motorcycle rides were canceled, but the 3-mile walk soldiered on with 350 walkers braving the wet weather to help raise funds for the family services the organization provides. Earlier fundraisers had attracted between 400 and 500 attendees. Anne Stokes, director of development with COBYS, would like to see larger crowds at the 2019 Bike and Hike, and she and Doug May, COBYS’ communications and development manager, have planned to open this
year’s Bike and Hike up to more area residents when it is held at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Sunday, Sept. 8. The 65mile motorcycle ride registration will begin at 12:45 p.m., and the ride will take off at 1:30 p.m. Registration for See Bike And Hike pg 2
Participants in past COBYS Bike and Hike fundraisers have taken motorcycle rides or bike rides or just depended on foot power to help raise funds for COBYS, which provides a variety of family services to those in need in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. This year’s event will be held on Sept. 8.
Help The Fight To Celebrate 10 Years A Tournament To Change Lives HOPE International Schedules Annual Golf Outing

“ We’re celebrating 10 years of awesomeness,” said Lynda Charles, president and founder of Help the Fight, which aids in meeting breast cancer patients’ financial needs. “We didn’t start out as a nonprofit; it snowballed.” In August 2009, Charles held a bake sale to benefit a family member and a coworker who had breast cancer. Several more fundraisers and contributions to a local cancer medical center filled the following years. In 2012, Help the Fight received its official nonprofit status, and the organization’s focus turned to helping individuals. Tucked away in an office building in the heart of Lancaster County is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms, including spiritual, material, social, and personal. Working toward that end, in 22 years, the organization has loaned out $1.3 billion to 950,000 clients in 16 countries. While those figures are impressive, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, prefers to talk about the people the organization has helped. “It’s not about the numbers, it’s about guys like Nico,” said Rutt, referring to a rice farmer Rutt met in the Philippines during late 2018 and early 2019. the walk and bicycle ride will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the 25-mile bike ride will begin at 2 p.m. The walk and 10-mile bike ride will begin at 2:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., the COBYS family celebration will begin. “We are adding more family-friendly celebration pieces throughout the afternoon,” explained Stokes. “We are looking to make sure that folks who might not know about COBYS will feel free to stop by and … learn about us.” The celebration will include a silent auction featuring gift certificates, theme baskets, tickets for local sports competitions, and items made and sold locally, such as handmade toys. “It’s a full range (of items),” said Stokes, who noted that local businesses are welcome to donate gift cards or items or stop by during the event to meet COBYS representatives. Donations will be welcomed up to the day of the event. Past events have been known for celebrating with ice cream, but Stokes noted this year, popcorn will be available too. Silent auction winners and door prize winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m., along with a short presentation by COBYS. Stokes said that the event brings together people from all parts of the
community. “It’s individuals from churches and youth groups gathering together with local businesses and area residents to not only do something fun, but to raise critical funds for COBYS and celebrate all the work that we do throughout Lancaster County and the surrounding communities,” she said. Funds raised through sponsorships and individual participants will aid COBYS’ general budget, which provides family services in several specific areas. “COBYS (offers) foster care, adoption, counseling, and family life education services, which includes workshops, parenting courses, and kinship navigator services,” explained Stokes. Stokes and May would be thrilled if this year’s Bike and Hike attracted up to 600 participants and raised more than $100,000. “For people who haven’t participated in the past, this is an easy way to get to know a little more about us and give it a try,” said Stokes. Readers who would like to register for the Bike and Hike may do so online at www.cobys.org/bike-and-hike. There is a minimum registration fee to take part. Individuals who have questions may email anne@cobys.org or call 717-656-6580.
dream of sending his sons to college. When his fishing business was wiped out in a 2013 typhoon that hit Tacloban and killed 7,000, Nico learned how to grow rice. “(Nico) got involved in a HOPE International savings group there, (participating in a) welcome, worship, Word, work, and wrap up group program,” explained Rutt. “He is just thriving.” Rutt asked Nico if he had advice for other farmers. “He said three things: ‘Trust God, work hard, and save,’” recalled Rutt. Rutt is offering area residents and businesses a chance to help more people like Nico by sponsoring and registering to attend the organization’s 19th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 13. Round one of the fourperson scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a continental breakfast and attend the awards luncheon, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and attend the awards dinner. According to Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE, the tournament can comfortably accommodate a total of 230 golfers. Boycan explained that HOPE will reach even more countries by entering a partnership with Compassion International to train representatives in savings group programs. This year, HOPE will train Compassion staff members in Rwanda, Thailand, Kenya, Indonesia, and Tanzania. “We want to make a big difference. We want to collaborate for the kingdom,” explained Boycan. Rutt noted that it is important to train those who are indigenous to an area to
oversee savings groups. He shared the story of Rosalie, a woman in the Philippines who was asked by a HOPE representative about her dreams. “She said she would love a house, but it is too big a dream,” relayed Rutt. “The indigenous leader, Florine, talked to her about big dreams and small steps toward them.” Rutt explained that the leader can relate to those in the groups in a realistic way. “(Rosalie’s) group leader can say, ‘I grew up here, and I know what you’re going through,’” explained Rutt. Boycan noted that it is the design of the savings groups to give people a way to lift themselves from poverty. “The microfinancing and savings groups restore dignity and help break the cycle of poverty,” said Boycan. “People feel terrible when they are unable to take care of their families, (but) you see their dignity restored when they realize, ‘I am capable. God has given me the gifts that I need, and I can (take care of my family).’” Last year, HOPE exceeded its goal of raising $350,000 from the tournament. Much of the money raised by the tournament is donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. One package includes a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic for 12 participants. Currently, the 2019 tournament has raised more than $200,000. Readers who would like to take part in the tournament may visit www.hope international.org/take-action/event detail/19th-annual-golf-tournament. Those who wish to play are asked to register by Saturday, Sept. 7. Individuals who have questions may call 717-464-3220, ext. 456, or email bbeachy@hopeinter national.org.

Children and families sometimes seek out assistance on their own, but they often are referred to the Lititz recCenter by Warwick School District, friends and neighbors, nurses and counselors, and local police departments. Membership director Emma Guinter and her team coordinate the confidential financial assistance program to get children into sports, swim lessons, summer camps, or even after-school care. They place seniors into free fitness classes and help families find programs they can attend together. Career Fair from pg 1 When the “What in the World” Career Fair came to John Beck Elementary earlier this year, the school’s 80 sixth-graders attended the event to help them start thinking about their future. The funds for the program were received through a Warwick Education Foundation grant applied for by teacher Erica Breckenmaker. The foundation sees its role as helping the schools by funding Career Fairs that focus on different areas of the full science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) spectrum. For the Beck event, Breckenmaker brought in four area professionals engaged in science-based careers: Dr. Jon C. Wenger, principal chemist, pharmaceutical raw materials, Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories; Dr. Kristie Berkstresser, assistant professor of nursing, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences; Jodie Linard, cardiovascular specialist, UPMC Pinnacle, Lititz; and Dr. David Manning, professor of physics at Thaddaeus

Help The Fight from pg 1 with close to 200 people receiving assistance in the past year. Folks with breast cancer may receive up to $500 once per calendar year. The majority of gifts go toward medical bills, rent or mortgage payments, and utilities. Additionally, Help the Fight also supports cancer screenings, whether that is in the form of genetic testing for family members of people with
breast cancer or subsidizing the cost of 3-D mammograms when traditional mammograms are not offered by a facility for baseline testing. “We make sure all those facilities know we are here to help pay that difference,” Charles said. Help the Fight is focused on assisting people who live in Lancaster County, although it has helped folks living in sur-
rounding counties. As part of the application process, a letter from an applicant’s oncologist is required for approval for assistance. “We are people helping people, and we want to help as many people as we can,” Charles said. “We’re trying to increase our public awareness. Not only are we here to
help, but we’re here if you’re looking for a place to shelter your donation.” Help the Fight runs small fundraising events each month and one major event a banquet and auction - each year. This year’s banquet and auction will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 4:30 to 10 p.m. at Spooky Nook Sports, 2913 Spooky Nook Road, Manheim. The buffet meal will feature chicken piccata, carved flank steak, and vegetable lasagna, along with several

sides and desserts. Two cash bars will be available. Auctions will be both live and silent, and Help the Fight is soliciting donations of goods and services to be sold at the event. Desired items include gift certificates to local eateries and attractions, gift baskets, weekend getaways, tickets to sporting events, children’s toys and crafts, fine art, jewelry, home accessories, furniture, and men’s and women’s fashions. “It’s not a pink event. There will be things for men and women,” Charles emphasizeed. The organization is also seeking volunteers and sponsors for the event. Five levels of sponsorship have been set, and exclusive underwriting opportunities are available as well. Sponsorships must be confirmed by Saturday, Aug. 31, to be included in the event program, on an event banner, on Help the Fight’s website, and on a digital display at the event. Charles noted that the banquet and
auction is a fun night; dress is business casual so attendees can relax and enjoy themselves. Radio host Melanie Gardner will be the master of ceremonies. Charles added that the pace of the event will keep moving, the auctioneer is a “total hoot,” and there will be a minimal amount of speechmaking. Approximately 10 minutes will be given to guest speaker Randall Oyer, who is the medical director of the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. Tickets for admission to the event may be purchased through Saturday, Sept. 14. “We’re hoping to ... attract as many people as possible,” Charles said. “We value public support. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.” To purchase tickets, learn about sponsorships, donate items, or volunteer with the event, readers may email patient coordinator Susie Dailey at helpthefight now@gmail.com, call 717-455-7095, or visit www.helpthefight.org.
