Agreat many things to a great many people, art can be interpreted as a pact between consumer and creator. The deeper the connection, the greater the value.
In very much the same sense, the Lititz Art Association’s 57th annual Outdoor Fine Arts Show can be portrayed through both the eyes of the viewers and the eyes of the artists.
“The show is set up so you can meander through, and in and out of booths,” said Carolann VanWyen, a member of the Lititz Art Association’s board. “It’s a serene setting. Some booths are set up so you can linger. You should feel moved by the artwork, and each artist is presenting something different. The whole Lititz park is a beautiful setting, and it’s relaxing. And if that’s not enough, people can walk across the street and there’s the hustle and bustle of downtown.”
Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad
St., will again serve as the venue for this year’s edition of the Lititz Outdoor Fine Arts Show on Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free to attend, and it will be held rain or shine. Refreshments will be made available through concessions.
More than 8,000 people from Lancaster County and beyond are expected to attend. About 130 artists from six states will be showing and selling their work, including VanWyen and 23 other members of the Lititz Art Association.
“I think part of the art show experience for viewers is a need to be attracted,” said VanWyen, a watercolorist. “I greet everybody. Some people just want to walk around. Some people want to engage; they want to ask questions. It’s about interacting with the people. I want my booth to flow. I don’t want it to be overwhelming. When it’s calm, people can linger. I set it up so people can feel good.”
The art on display will include work in oil, acrylics, pastels,
drawing, ceramics, mixed media, sculpture and watercolors.
“If you’re making something through something that already exists, that’s a craft,” said VanWyen. “Fine art is made from a blank canvas. It’s meant to be hung and displayed for viewing pleasure. We also want diversity. Many artists have their own style, their own technique. They either have a message or a style that’s interesting. With fine artists, you see a piece of them in their work. The artist is giving a piece of themselves.”
The Lititz Outdoor Fine Arts Show was founded by Village Art Association of Lititz president Floyd Hackman in the late 1960s. Originally conducted on the sidewalks downtown, the show was later moved to the more spacious and accommodating Lititz Springs Park.
The 100-member Lititz Art Association also sponsors the Lititz Parkwalk in October, the Holiday Gift Show in November and the Square Foot Art Show in April.
“If you’re an artist, you’re
constantly evolving in your ability,” said VanWyen. “Artists create from a place of passion, and hopefully someone else likes it too. That’s why people love to have original art. They see a piece and they’re connected with it. That moves them to make the purchase.”

Lancaster Toys for Tots continues to do amazing things in our community. But it’s work that can’t be done alone, or without the support of many generous donors.
Lancaster Toys for Tots’ latest venture, Touch-A-Truck Family Day, looks to build off that altruistic spirit and take the organization’s work to a whole
different level.
“We’re helping kids in Lancaster County, and there’s a big need in Lancaster County,” said Gil Bixler, Lancaster Toys for Tots’ coordinator for the last 37 years. “I’ve got a fantastic team of volunteers who just enjoy doing it. That’s what it takes to make it all happen. They work harder than I do.”

Ellyn Honey is a proponent of books, a facilitator of books, a book circulator. Her involvement with the international organization Little Free Libraries has helped change the course of circulation and makes books more readily available for everyone.
“The purpose of Little Free Libraries is to provide books for anybody,” said Honey, a registered book steward with Little Free Libraries, explaining
that the initiative operates on the concept of “take a book and leave a book.” “If you visited a Little Free Library, you could take books, you could bring them back or you could keep them. It’s a big community thing containing kids’ and adult books. Nine out of 10 kids’ books don’t come back, and that’s OK. Some people will take five books and bring 10 back. If they want to keep them, that’s perfectly fine.” They’re not hers, they don’t belong to her and neither did she

Touch-A-Truck
Lancaster Toys for Tots’ Touch-ATruck Family Day is a brand-new, kid-friendly event. It will be held outdoors at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster, near Tires Plus, on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is free to attend, but families are encouraged to donate a new, unwrapped toy. It is also
being used as a way to draw attention to autism.
“Park City came to us and said, ‘What do you think of this idea?’” said Bixler. “We thought it was great. The goal is to create awareness and supply toys for autism groups. Autism is more prevalent than you and I know. We want to get the public more aware of the needs of these children.”
On hand that day will be nearly 100 vehicles - cop cars, fire trucks, emergency medical services vehicles and tow trucks - as well as a LifeLion helicopter and a state police helicopter. Many members and representatives of police departments from Lancaster County townships and Lancaster County’s first responders will be present.
“It’s helping us and it’s great (public relations) for them,” said Bixler of the public servants. Up to 500 people are expected to attend.
Lancaster Toys for Tots’ Touch-ATruck Family Day will also include food trucks.
“I perceive it being a growing event every year,” said Bixler, himself a retired Marine. “It’ll be a lot

of families, a lot of kids, a lot of fun. The state police will show the kids their helicopter. They can climb all over the fire trucks. And they can get in the cop cars and the officers will explain what they do.”
Lancaster Toys for Tots also raises funds for its annual Christmas toy drive for local underprivileged children by conducting a golf outing at Overlook Golf Course in May, by hosting car shows in the spring and fall and through a motorcycle ride in October.
In 2023, Lancaster Toys for Tots distributed 63,523 toys and supported 15,138 children, mostly from Lancaster County. Those toys were provided through monetary donations to Lancaster Toys for Tots and through 7,000 collection bins placed throughout the county.
“Through those donations, we support 56 other organizations,” said Bixler. “Where else can you help so many children at one time? I meet so many wonderful people in this position. I really enjoy it.”
Founded in 1947 by the United State Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots is a national organization with more than 800 chapters. The Lancaster chapter of Toys for Tots began in 1987 with veterans distributing new toys from the trunk of a car.

Lititz Chocolate Walk slated
The Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area will hold the 23rd annual Lititz Chocolate Walk on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 25 locations in downtown Lititz will serve chocolate treats. Tickets are currently on sale. Only 2,000 tickets are available for this event. Last year, 500 tickets were sold on the first day, and 800 were sold in the first week. The event typically draws visitors from 16 or more states each year, such as California, New Mexico, Alaska, and Florida.
Tickets may be purchased by cash or check at Wilbur Chocolate, 45 N. Broad St., Lititz; Zum Anker Alley Shoppes, 22 E. Main St. (rear), Lititz; Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz; Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz; and Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. Credit card purchases may be made at Zum Anker Alley Shoppes and at www.lititzchocolatewalk.com.
New this year, some of the merchants and sponsors will offer coupons. These coupons will be
emailed to online purchasers of the tickets prior to the event. People who purchase their tickets in person should provide their email address so they receive the coupons. To redeem the coupons, a person must show his or her Chocolate Walk button.
This fundraising event is held each year by the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area to raise funds for the children’s charities it supports, including the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, the Manheim Township and Lititz libraries, and Power Packs. Last year, the club - which has fewer than 30 members - was able to provide more than $100,000 to these organizations, and in the 30 years the club has been in existence, more than $1.1 million has been donated. Chocolate Walk is made possible by sponsors like Wilbur Chocolate, the retail locations and restaurants that open their doors for the event, the town of Lititz, the more than 150 volunteers, the people who buy tickets, and the
chefs and chocolatiers who provide treats without compensation.
The Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area is part of Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization that is devoted to serving the children of the world, one child and one community at a time.
For more information about the Kiwanis Club or to volunteer at Chocolate Walk, contact Charlie Stickler at 717-560-2295 or visit www.lititzkiwanis.org.

Little libraries from
build them or place them at their current locations, but Honey helps service many of the 12 Little Free Libraries located in and around Lititz.
“The community knows who I am,” said Honey, a resident of Narvon. “The community knows what it is and where it is. When my husband and I go through Lititz, I’ll check them, straighten them up and fill them with books if needed. I’m one of the people doing it, but I’m not the only one. It’s a great way to get books in people’s hands.”
Among the dozen Little Free Libraries located in the Lititz area are ones at 11 Pinewood Ave., at Lititz Church of the Brethren at 300 W. Orange St., on the corner of New and Locust Streets and at 696 Sue Drive. Some of the Little Free Libraries have been built and placed by organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and Girl
pg 1
Scouts of the USA, and others have been purchased from the Little Free Library organization. Many of the structures resemble houses.
“I get very passionate about helping provide books to the community,” said Honey. “I’ve always loved to read. My love of reading and ways I can help the community make me feel good about what I am doing. It warms my heart to see a family stop in at the library, to see the small children jumping up and down getting excited to find a book just for them.”
There are nearly 40 Little Free Libraries stationed across Lancaster County. Locally, they seem to have gained traction during the pandemic when public libraries were off limits.
Little Free Library was founded as an organization in 2016 and since then 400 million books have been circulated. There are currently 185,000 Little Free Libraries in 121 countries around the world.
“They’re all over the place. You see them everywhere,” said Honey. “Because they’re around the world, they’re in places where people don’t get a lot of opportunities to read. For me and my husband, it’s kind of like a scavenger hunt. We’ll purposely look for them.”

Giant, customers raise money for initiative
Through its Healing Our Planet initiative, the Giant Company announced on June 27 that it raised $403,360 in partnership with its customers to support Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and Planet Bee Foundation. During the month of May, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores were invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar to support each organization.

will support Pick Up Pennsylvania and local cleanup, recycling and greening events.
Planet Bee Foundation drives awareness for pollinators and the importance of bees as a pathway to STEM, conservation and innovations in agriculture. Funding raised by the Giant Company will support local beekeepers, research programs and school and community programs.

Ruhl’s Church will host picnic, grove services and more
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Old-fashioned fun will be in the spotlight when Ruhl’s Church hosts its annual community picnic. The fun will take place at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim, on Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Our church picnic is a long-standing tradition that started over 100 years ago,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic planning committee. “We feel that it is important to honor the traditions of generations gone by. It is our hope that our church and community will embrace this tradition and that it will continue on for many years to come.”
The picnic will feature homemade chicken corn soup, following a recipe that has been used for generations. Takeout soup sales will begin at 9 a.m., and people are encouraged to bring their own container or buy the soup by the quart.
A full lunch menu will also be offered, including soup, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, homemade desserts and beverages.
“There is space to enjoy lunch either at picnic tables under the trees outside or inside the pavilion,” Ruhl said, adding that a playground is also on-site.
In addition to the picnic, the church will host worship services in the grove on Sundays from July 14 through Aug. 18.
“We will gather each night for a time of gospel music, worship, Bible-based messages and great fellowship for all ages,” Ruhl shared. “All are welcome.” Speakers will be the Rev. Blaine Wenger on July 14, pastor Tim Fray on July 21, the Rev. Rob Timlin on July 28, Seth Achey on Aug. 4, the Rev. Rick Rimert on Aug. 11 and the Rev. Joe DiPaolo on Aug. 18.

Ruhl hopes people will make time to attend the picnic or other church activities, noting that all activities offer opportunities for fellowship.
“Our annual church picnic is a way to reconnect with friends and meet new people in a casual environment,” she said. “Grove services are a way to step back in time and worship as our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents used to.”
