Civil Communication In A Safe Setting By Ann Mead Ash

Jason Perkowski, senior pastor at Faith and Oregon Community United Methodist churches and facilitator of Lifetree Café, Lititz, is on a mission to restore respectful conversation surrounding controversial topics. “The idea for Lifetree Café is to have open-ended conversations with people,” said Perkowski. “Even though the topic may be controversial, all ideas and opinions are welcome.” Lifetree Café, Lititz, is held at The General Sutter Inn, 14 E. Main St., Lititz, each Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. Perkowski noted that participants may purchase from the full menu at each meeting and that the General Sutter donates the venue to the group in order to give back to the community. Recent topics have included “Fatherless: Getting Past the Pain of an Absent or Abusive Dad” and

“Money, Money, Money: Stories From a Lottery Winner.” “(Lifetree Café) makes a space for people to come together and practice having civil conversations about difficult subjects,” said Perkowski. According to Perkowski, each gathering is designed to be an hour long and follows an international curriculum by Group Publishing, an organization that provides training for pastors. “A host leads the conversation, and there will be a video introduction and an opportunity for people to have conversation around the table in small groups,” said Perkowski, who added that the discussion may be followed by a second video or another discussion question. “Sometimes the conversation is just at the small tables, and sometimes there are opportunities for the whole group to talk,” he added, noting that sometimes a designated person from a table shares conclusions with the larger group. See Lifetree Café pg 3

Looking forward to greeting attendees at Lifetree Café, Lititz, are (from left) Dave Kammerer, Jason Perkowski, Buni Harbison, and Tom Chapman. Lifetree Café, Lititz, is held each Monday at 7 p.m. at The General Sutter Inn.

There are a lot of reasons that musicians take up an instrument. For the six members of The Cat’s Pajamas Old School Jazz Band, the love of jazz, especially New Orleans-style or 1920s jazz, has a special attraction. “The appeal of this type of music for a musician is that to play it, you have to strike a balance between The Cat’s Pajamas Old School Jazz Band will take improvising as a soloist, to the Boettcher House stage on Sunday, July 15, improvising as a group, and for a free outdoor concert. “Isn’t he handsome?” Erika Herold practically gushed. Herold’s praise was not for a significant other or family member. Rather, it was bestowed on 6-month-old yellow Labrador named Woody who was happily rolling in the grass at Herold’s feet. Herold, a logistics analyst at Woodstream Corporation in Lititz, and other Woodstream employees raised $5,000 to sponsor Woody to become a United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) service dog. Woody is several months into the BARKS Prison Program, through which he is being trained by an inmate at Moshannon Valley Correction Center See Service Dog pg 5

Lifetree CafĂŠ from pg 1 Lifetree topics vary widely. “We have talked about police ‌ and one of the detectives from Lititz came (to the event),â€? shared Perkowski. “(The detective) stuck around for a (question-and-answer period), and that was one of our best-attended events.â€? Participants have also discussed how to move forward in life after a domestic abuse situation that caused bodily harm and disfigurement. “Literally, the conversation was (about) how (to) find forgiveness and ‌ find yourself to be beautiful and lovable again,â€? said Perkowski, who added that other topics have included aliens and crop circles and how to find joy in life. A program on how to find joy in life featured a women’s synchronized swimming group. “All these senior women come together from different backgrounds and find joy in doing synchronized swimming,â€? shared Perkowski. A new monthly addition to the topics is a segment called “In the News,â€? which Perkowski explained focuses on a current hot-button issue and encourages conversation on that subject. “The next (In the News segment) is on trade wars,â€? he said. Perkowski said that an important aspect of Lifetree is that it gives area

residents a chance to be part of a community. “What is special about this group is that we have people for whom this is their only space to be part of a community during the week, he said, noting that the interactive presentations attract from 10 to 30 participants depending on the topic. “We had one gentleman who came faithfully for (18 months) who was a primary caregiver for his wife, who had dementia, Perkowski said. “This space (gives participants a chance) to come out and have fellowship and have community. A core part of Lifetree is to give people a chance to connect with each other. Perkowski also noted that although Lifetree is presented from a Christian perspective, people of all faiths are welcome. “It’s a very light touch because this is a space for people to have conversations about their faith, no matter what faith community they come from, he said. Readers who would like more information about Lifetree may visit http://lifetreecafelancaster.us or search for “Lifetree Cafe - Lititz on Facebook. Individuals who have specific questions may contact Perkowski at 717-333-9238 or jbperkowski@gmail.com.

Lancaster County community members were sworn in by the Hon. Jeffrey Reich as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers on May 31 in the ballroom at Emerald Foundation Community Campus in Lancaster. The new volunteers join more than 200 others who have been trained and are advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court system. CASA volunteers help to ensure that the children’s needs are recognized and best interests are considered both in the courtroom and in the community. CASA of Lancaster County trains volunteers to be qualified, compassionate advocates to fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. CASA volunteers meet regularly with the child and interview people in the child’s life, including social workers, attorneys, teachers, doctors, and mental health professionals. The new volunteers include Rick Groff, Lancaster; Karyn Heichel, Lancaster; Jocelyn Mylin, Willow Street; Mary Beth Schweigert, Lancaster; Yvonne Tejada, Lancaster; Holly Mutchler, Lititz; Judy Swarthout, Elizabethtown; Melissa Davey, Landisville; Michelle Clements, Landisville; Keri Weaver, Manheim; Jackie Brandsema,

Open House from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

“We’re not just one class, said Connie Dienner, founder and director of Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, and Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. “We have a holistic approach to developing students. Dienner will be happy to explain more about Cavod’s unique approach to teaching the arts during the academy’s open house on Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prospective students will have the chance to meet instructors, see performances, and learn about the many types of classes available at Cavod. Free face painting will be offered, a bounce house will be on-site, and a local Christian radio station will broadcast live from the venue. “Cavod is not just a dance class or a music lesson, explained Dienner. “We’re creating a place where everyone can come and be a part of something. We’re building a community that is safe and family-oriented with excellent training. Regular performances have been a hallmark of Cavod open houses in the past. This year, Dienner has lined up gymnastics, theater, dance, and hand-tohand combat demonstrations every 30 minutes. In addition, characters from a variety of Cavod’s theater shows will be present to meet attendees. Cavod instructors will be present to meet visitors and discuss their teaching approaches. “We will have three new music instructors who will give private lessons in piano, guitar, and voice, as well as a new professional dance instructor, noted Dienner. Every half hour, attendees will have a chance to win door prizes, and at the end of the open house a grand prize will be given away. Hand-to-Hand Combat, which teaches a defensive martial art, is one of Cavod’s

newer offerings, along with Intro to Dance, designed for teenagers and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The weekly dance class will include ballet, jazz, modern, and hip-hop with the goal of teaching self-expression to students with unique abilities. Free food options will include hot dogs, popcorn, and soda. A local vendor will provide free ice cream cones for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session. Additional registration specials will include free popcorn for a performance season at Cavod for those who register by Monday, July 16. For those who register by Wednesday, Aug. 1, and pay for their first month’s tuition, a drawing will be held to win a free month’s tuition at Cavod. “It’s a fun day for the whole family, noted Dienner. “The parents enjoy coming, and the children usually don’t want to leave. That makes Dienner happy because it fits in with the academy’s goals. “We want people to feel they can be part of the Cavod community, she said. Readers who would like to peruse the fall Cavod Academy schedule of classes may visit www.cavodacademy.com. Individuals who have questions may call 717-354-3355.

horizons a bit. In addition to playing popular jazz classics, Fulginiti said band members enjoy interacting with their audiences to create a fun atmosphere. “We like to relax and have fun when we play, and we want the audience to do the same, he noted. “Usually people just listen and tap their feet, but we sometimes get dancers as well. Boettcher House, which is located in Landis Woods, can be reached by turning off Lititz Pike onto Hillside Lane, adjacent to Neffsville Mennonite Church, in Lancaster. The band’s repertoire includes tunes such as “When the Saints Go Marching In, “Bourbon Street Parade, “St. James Infirmary Blues, and “That’s a Plenty, which Fulginiti said are among the most recognizable tunes the group performs. However, the group members like to keep their offering diverse. “We’re constantly adding, deleting and changing up our repertoire, said Fulginiti. “The tunes that seem to capture the widest range of audience ages are the nontraditional, more modern pop tunes that we retrofit with the older jazz style. Among those tunes are “Stray Cat Strut by The Stray Cats, “Suit & Tie by Justin Timberlake, and “Careless Whisper by Wham! “The younger people recognize the tunes, and the older people recognize the style, said Fulginiti. “Mixing them together can help (audience members) expand their musical

in Phillipsburg. While at the prison, Woody is living with his inmate handler around the clock. The inmate training program has proven to be successful. Normally, inmates teach puppies up to 50 commands, but many dogs are reaching that goal ahead of schedule. On June 8, Woody, accompanied by UDS staff accountant Mary Langton, visited Woody’s sponsors when the corporation held a company picnic at its facility. Langton said that Woody will spend a total of 18 months working with a designated inmate. “Woody will come back to us for (his) final six months of training to refine the skills he will need to (work with) the client he is chosen (to serve), explained Langton. Langton is pleased with Woody’s progress so far. “He is very smart, and he seems to bond quickly, she said. As Woody lolled in the grass and employee sponsors rubbed his stomach, Langton noted, “He is not afraid of crowds. Herold met Woody for the first time when UDS held a sponsor meet-and-greet event just before Woody left for Moshannon. “This is the first time we have sponsored a service dog, said Herold, adding that the idea was brought to the company by an employee whose spouse is associated with UDS. During the training period, Herold receives updates concerning Woody, which she passes along to employees. One of the privileges sponsors appreciate is the honor of helping to choose a moniker for their designated pup. “We had a company contest to name him, said Herold, who

passed along the three suggestions that received the most votes to UDS. “(Because UDS staff members) don’t know what disabilities the person he is matched with will have, they consider names for how easily they can be pronounced, so his name will work with anyone who is assigned to him, Herold said, adding that she was glad “Woody was chosen because it reflects the company name. Herold said that when company staff first heard about the service dog sponsorship program, they were intrigued. “We said, ‘Wow, this is something we want to do,’ she shared. “It’s a win-win. Herold explained that the employee sponsors were happy to know they are helping the inmate who is training the dog because that person receives the opportunity to become certified as a trainer and gain competence in an area. “When he comes out (of prison, the inmate) has training to (work with) service dogs. It gives him a niche skill, said Herold. Of course, Herold is most excited about the chance Woody has to positively affect the life of a person with a disability. “He is going to be a lifeline, said Herold. “(Woody) will affect not just the person, but their whole family, and he can give someone their life back. That gives me chills. Herold is looking forward to the road ahead as Woody grows and learns the skills he will need to be a service dog. “Our sponsorship is for two years, and at the end we get to go to his graduation, said Herold. “What really touches me is that it is a long program that will have an effect for years down the road. Readers who would like to learn more about UDS may visit www.udservices.org.
