Journaling For Self And Community Library Offers Chance To Be Part Of Historic Project n June 24, Diane Guscott, community relations and development coordinator for the Lititz Public Library, gave a virtual class called Journaling for Life. The class was based on a live journaling presentation that Guscott, who has been journaling for nearly three decades, had given live a few years ago. “Journaling was very helpful to me during the pandemic,” recalled Guscott. “It kept me sane.” Guscott resurrected the journaling presentation to encourage area residents to journal for their own mental health, but also to draw attention to the Community Journaling Project that the library started during the pandemic. The journaling project offers three journals, each with a specific prompt, to library patrons. A display in the library explains more about the project and offers a card for each journal. The card can be taken to the circulation desk to check out the journal for a week or more. Participants have the opportunity to read
O
what has been written in the journal, write in the journal, and then return it to the library. Writers may choose whether to sign their entry, which Guscott scans for appropriateness when the journal is returned. “If (the project) takes off, we can add (the journals) to our permanent collection,” Guscott said. Guscott researched the idea before bringing it to the library. She noted that many universities started pandemic journal projects so they would have a written record of what people were doing and their reactions to the historical occurrence. Guscott also looked back to the last pandemic and found a book put out by the Lancaster Historical Society called “Pandemic 1918.” The book is now available for visitors to see in the library’s genealogy room. “The really interesting thing about that pandemic of 1918 and what was happening locally is that so many of the things people were writing about are the same things we talk about (now),” Guscott said, See Journaling pg 2

In the last five years, the ministry originally known as House of His Creation (HOHC) and briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), has been through a number of changes. After becoming FORM in 2016, the ministry moved from Lititz Pike to the Brickerville area, but as of late 2019, the name had reverted to HOHC, and in February 2021, the ministry moved to the site of a former bed-and-breakfast at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz.
Through all the changes, the mission of the ministry has been to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. In its new location, HOHC will continue to provide those services through maternity housing for women age 18 and up especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and have been sober for several months. The women must also be willing to consider adoption and parenting plans and to take advantage of growth opportunities, and be educated toward reaching goals. Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic

life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs. “We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.” Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “When a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the roles and the relationships around that.” Callie noted that when the pregnancy was not the woman’s first, other issues may be involved. “(When a
woman has) multiple children (who are) part of their story, then it becomes reunification or rebuilding relationship with children they haven’t actively been parenting,” said Callie. “Those children wouldn’t necessarily live here, but we would help (the woman) negotiate toward a goal that may include parenting rights in some cases.” Aftercare program goals include education in mindful parenting, empowerment to access community resources, and engaging parents to connect with other parents. HOHC offers parenting classes called “Parenting Journey” and “Parenting Journey for Fathers.” The 12-week experiential programs include guided discussion to develop knowledge and skills. More information about HOHC may be found at www.hohc.org. Those with specific questions may email mail@hohc.org or call 717-626-0263. Congratulations to 2-year-old Lyra and her human, Peggy Buhalo of East Earl. Lyra received the most votes on our 2021 Pawsome Pet contest. According to Buhalo, Lyra is pawsome because she has a unique personality. She is a resident of the University of Pittsburgh as an emotional support cat. She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

BIBLE CONFERENCE July 22nd-25th
“This was put together by my great-uncle Richard Seiverling,” said Darren Seiverling, who, along with his family, oversees the museum and gives tours by appointment. Richard, who passed in 2006, began collecting cars - full-size cars - in the mid-1980s. “The building was built in 1991 to house his car collection,” said Darren, noting that between 1991 and 1994, the building was full of classic cars with space to work on some of them. “Around ’95, he got the first pedal car, and he was so proud,” recalled Darren, pointing out the 1947 tan and orange Pontiac that is still in the museum. “He called us over the first day it came because he was so excited.” The first pedal car was the beginning of a trend that would last the rest of Richard’s life. “It felt like every week, I was putting in a new pedal car,” Darren said. “They came in crates from all over the nation.” According to Darren, Richard liked the color schemes and how small and cute they were. “There’s hardly any maintenance,” he noted, adding that Richard’s love for the cars was evident as he showed them off and told the story of each car. Darren shared that most of the cars in the museum are “original restored,” meaning they were bought brand new by somebody and played with, and they went to the attic before being restored close to original condition. “The restorers in the mid-1990s picked them up and restored them and sent Richard a Polaroid (photo),” said Darren. “If he liked the Polaroid, he sent them a check.” By 1996, Richard wanted to share his enjoyment with others, so he opened the museum and began bringing in small groups for tours.
Soon he was running out of room. “At that time, he had a 1927 Chevy coupe, and one day, he said, ‘I am selling the Chevy because I need more room for pedal cars,’” recalled Darren, who was 16 at the time and was shocked by the decision. “(Richard) sold the Chevy and (bought) more pedal cars.” For an adult who remembers the age of pedal cars - from about the 1920s to the 1970s, it is interesting to look for cars similar to those they remember, but some rather fancy automobiles are on display as well. Referencing a 1924 Packard, Darren noted that families that could afford $50 to $100 for a child’s toy in that time period owned the cars. By the 1950s, some pedal cars could be purchased for $15, and middle-class families could afford them. “I consider these the Power Wheels of that time,” said Darren. Darren, who still buys and sells pedal cars, identifies them by searching old pedal car advertisements on the internet. But cars are not the only vehicles represented in the museum. A truck that was specially made for the museum, a bulldozer, and a tandem pedal car that could be pedaled by two children at the same time are also featured, along with several pedal planes and a boat on its own trailer. Currently, the museum is open only by appointment, and groups are limited. There is no admission fee, but per-person donations are appreciated. “We let everybody mosey around at their own pace,” said Darren. Readers who would like more information about the museum may visit www.pedalcar museum.com or search for “Seiverling Museum, Car and Pedal Car Museum” on Facebook. The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club will host its fifth annual Christmas in July Extravaganza on Saturday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Those who attend will see unique fossils, trilobites, Paleozoic wonders, gems, jewelry, minerals, and crystals. There will also be free expert specimen analysis. “This event brings back the personto-person aspect of having interactive discourse again,” said club founder Chris Haefner. “It’s a relief already just knowing we can host a live show!” Tickets for the show can be purchased on the day of the event inside the Farm and Home Center. The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. The club has monthly meetings with presentations, and members go on local and out-of-state field trips. Additionally, the club helps scouts earn their merit loops and badges, and a few qualified members teach geology for free - often on a field trip to the Pequea Silver Mines. Proceeds from club membership and shows allow for building rental, insurance for members, field trip expenses, events for scouts, and more. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club” on Facebook.

Local Magician from pg 1
Myers explained that the show was chosen for manipulation talents. “There is a part of the act where I do sleight of hand,” he said. “It’s very difficult and showcases the magician’s skill. It requires decades of mastery and experience.” The specific part of the act Myers referred to involves silk manipulation with many brightly colored handkerchiefs appearing and disappearing. “The color makes it difficult to conceal (the handkerchiefs),” Myers explained. “Worlds of Wonder,” which is now playing at the theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, involves the Magic and Wonder cast taking audiences to different worlds, including visiting the circus, adventures with pirates, Alice in Wonderland, and the world of the 1980s. “The show has a patriotic ending where we remember the most wonderful place that we live in a tribute to those who have sacrificed so much to make those freedoms possible,” said Myers. The theater is currently open up to five days per week, and Myers noted that eventually he would like to present up to 10 shows weekly. “We were in the process of working on launching a second show in Lancaster last year,” said Myers, who said that a comedy, music, and variety show was planned and postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions. “We will have more (entertainment) experiences, including (types of shows) that Lancaster County hasn’t seen,” said Myers, adding that the size and flavor of the show is unique to the area. Myers grew up in Chambersburg, but he and his family have lived in Lancaster for more than a decade. “We call this home,” said Myers, who has also performed in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and put together the details of the current Magic and Wonder show in Branson, Mo. More information about the show is available at www.lancaster magicshow.com. Readers with questions may call 717-323-3077.

This summer, the 2,000 Warwick School District elementary students and their families will use their imaginations to travel to a desert island during the inaugural summer edition of the One Book One School One Community reading program. Funding for the summer program was provided through a grant from the Warwick Education Foundation (WEF). The summer edition was created because of the program’s popularity during the school year and because no author visit was held in the winter, noted Barbara Mobley, executive director of the WEF. Each child has received a copy of “Nim’s Island,” written by award-winning author Wendy Orr and illustrated by Kerry Millard. Mobley said that parents are asked to read to their children 15 minutes See Reading pg 9

Serving Up Soup BY CATHY MOLITORIS
R073370
While a church picnic has been a tradition at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church for more than 100 years, the pandemic has caused the congregation to rethink its plans. The church had to cancel its picnic both last year and this year, but church members still wanted to serve the community, so they decided to offer their popular chicken corn soup to go. The soup will be available for pickup on Saturday, July 17, at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim. Soup will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out. “It’s our traditional recipe we’ve used at our church since we started having picnics,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic committee. “People can bring their own containers, but we’ll also have prepackaged containers of soup in quarts.” Ruhl has been involved in making the soup for decades. “I was taught how to make the rivels, and I’ve done that for the last 30 years,” she stated, adding that her husband and daughters help out, as well. The committee cooks and prepares the chicken on the Thursday before the sale, and the sale day is a very early morning for the crew. “We start about 5:30 a.m.,” Ruhl explained., and it’s a good thing they do, because people begin lining up early in the morning to get their soup, she noted. It also takes a village to serve soup to the community. “The soup sale is a church effort,” Ruhl remarked. “Many volunteers get together to help and make this happen.” The church members hope to bring back the picnic next year, which typically includes a full day of music, games and fellowship, but they felt the soup sale was a way to ease back into community outreach. “We wanted to serve our community in a way that everyone would feel comfortable,” Ruhl said. “Lots of people come every year, and we wanted to be there for them.” Proceeds from the soup sale are used to maintain the picnic grove, where the church will hold services on six Sundays in July and August. For more information on the soup sale or church services, call the church at 717-665-3400 or visit www.ruhlschurch.org.
