Warwick Graduates Receive National Recognition BY ANN MEAD ASH

va Gallagher has always enjoyed working with clay. “Even as a kid I loved sculpting,” reported Gallagher. “Whether it was polymer clay or air-dry clay, I loved making art that occupied a three-dimensional space,” said the recent Warwick High School (WHS) graduate. Fellow WHS 2021 graduate Emily Paynter did not realize her love of the medium until she was a junior. “Ceramics first sparked my interest last year (during) first semester in my sculpture class,” she noted. Both students were taught by WHS faculty member Nate Nixdorf, who recognized their talents and suggested they enter the American Museum of Ceramic Art’s (AMOCA) 2021 annual High School Exhibition Program. Since 2014, AMOCA has hosted an annual juried exhibition showcasing the work of high school students studying the ceramic arts. Gallagher’s piece, called “Under Pressure,” a representation of a foot stepping on a head,

and Paynter’s “Chameleon,” a detailed lizard perched on a mug, were both selected by AMOCA, and their work was exhibited virtually from WHS. The foot sculpture that gained Gallagher recognition was inspired by her seeking the answer to the question, “How can I convey emotion through the human form?” “I had previously made sculptures with hands and busts, so I wanted to explore the next challenge in anatomy: feet,” explained Gallagher. Looking to incorporate emotion in the piece, Gallagher said as she began sculpting she realized she could create a scene of a foot stepping on a head. “The coolest part about the piece is that it retains some function, as the ankle is hollowed and could be used as a very unique type of vase,” she noted. Paynter also wanted her piece to be both functional and sculptural. Continuing with the animal theme that was the focus of an independent study, she pictured the chameleon tail as a useful appendage. “I could envision a

Students Join In Reading Program This summer, the 2,000 Warwick School District elementary students and their families will use their imaginations to travel to a desert island during the inaugural summer edition of the One Book One School One Community reading program. Funding for the summer program was provided through a grant from the Warwick Education Foundation (WEF). The summer edition was created because of the program’s popularity during the school year and because no author visit was held in the winter, noted Barbara Mobley, executive director of the WEF. Seiverling Museum BY ANN MEAD ASH

At 66 Lancaster Ave., Ephrata, just a stone’s throw from Ephrata Hospital, is a small building that holds treasures to make the eyes of most children and many adults grow large with delight. The Seiverling Museum - Car and Pedal Car Museum holds 150 pedal cars from all over the world, plus three full-size classic cars. “This was put together by my great-uncle Richard Seiver-

ling,” said Darren Seiverling, who, along with his family, oversees the museum and gives tours by appointment. Richard, who passed in 2006, began collecting cars - full-size cars - in the mid-1980s. “The building was built in 1991 to house his car collection,” said Darren, noting that between 1991 and 1994, the building was full of classic cars with space to work on some of them. “Around ’95, he got the first pedal car, and he was so proud,” recalled Darren, point-

Soon he was running out of room. “At that time, he had a 1927 Chevy coupe, and one day, he said, ‘I am selling the Chevy because I need more room for pedal cars,’” recalled Darren, who was 16 at the time and was shocked by the decision. “(Richard) sold the Chevy and (bought) more pedal cars.” For an adult who remembers the age of pedal cars from about the 1920s to the 1970s, it is interesting to look for cars similar to those they remember, but some rather fancy automobiles are on display as well. Referencing a 1924 Packard, Darren noted that families that could afford $50 to $100 for a child’s toy in that time period owned the cars. By the 1950s, some pedal cars could be purchased for $15, and middle-

Darren shared that most of the cars in the museum are “original restored,” meaning they were bought brand new by somebody and played with, and they went to the attic before being restored close to original condition. “The restorers in the mid-1990s picked them up and restored them and sent Richard a Polaroid

class families could afford them. “I consider these the Power Wheels of that time,” said Darren. Darren, who still buys and sells pedal cars, identifies them by searching old pedal car advertisements on the internet. But cars are not the only vehicles represented in the museum. A truck that was specially made for the museum, a bulldozer, and a tandem pedal car that could be pedaled by two children at the same time are also featured, along with several pedal planes and a boat on its

own trailer. Currently, the museum is open only by appointment, and groups are limited. There is no admission fee, but per-person donations are appreciated. “We let everybody mosey around at their own pace,” said Darren. High Note from pg 1 Party of Five, known for its R&B dance sounds, first began playing together in the late 1990s. The band’s covers of tunes from 1950s through the 1990s are designed to make attendees want to get up and dance. While the band members see themselves as classic rockers, their selection includes doo-wop and Motown songs, along with Southern rock music. This 90-minute concert is open to the public and attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Families, friends, and neighbors

are invited to the event, which is a summer tradition held when the annuals and herbs are in full bloom. This year’s concert is sponsored by Luther Acres. Although the concert is free, donations to further maintain the gardens will be welcomed and appreciated. Planning Awards Presented The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC) held its places2040 Planning Leadership Awards Celebration on June 23 at the Farm and Home Center. These awards recognize planning projects that demonstrate leadership and effectiveness in implementing places2040 during the last three years. The awards also recognize individuals who demonstrate leadership and effectiveness in bringing major community projects or projects of regional importance to fruition in Lancaster County. Scott Standish, LCPC executive director, announced the award winners, and Alice Yoder, LCPC chair, presented the awards. Leadership Awards - the top planning project awards were presented to three projects. The Chiques Creek Watershed Report Card is a tool that was developed to use as a data-driven guide to

engage multiple municipalities, stakeholders and agencies with a goal of quantifiable pollution reduction to meet federal mandates for the watershed. Also honored is 101 NQ, the redevelopment of the former Bulova building into a mix of residential, commercial, and office uses. The third honoree is the Little Conestoga Blue-Green Corridor, which proposes extensive streambank, floodplain, and wetland restoration and legacy sediment removal within a 2.5-mile corridor of the Little Conestoga Creek. Achievement Awards went to three projects, as well. Lititz Shirt Factory is the redesign of a century-old brick warehouse as a gathering place for Lititz locals and visitors. Another honoree was the Lime Spring Square Floodplain Restoration, which resulted in the construction of 4,750 linear feet of stream channel restoration, removal

of 38,500 tons of legacy sediment, creation of 8.5 acres of wetlands, and reduction of pollutants. The project also created an additional 8.5 acres of developable area. The last recipient was Passenger Coffee Roastery and Café, a modern micro-roaster that contracted with TONO Group to develop a new headquarters location and manufacturing space on North Plum Street in Lancaster city. A Certificate of Merit went to Lancaster Urban Farming Initiative Vertical Greenhouse. This project proposes a vertical greenhouse in the heart of Lancaster. The expansive glass and steel structure on the Prince Street Garage would demonstrate new initiatives in urban farming in an underutilized public space. Individual Awards were given to three people. Elementary students in Warwick School District are reading “Nim’s Island” this summer.

Each child has received a copy of “Nim’s Island,” written by award-winning author Wendy Orr and illustrated by Kerry Millard. Mobley said that parents are asked to read to their children 15 minutes a day. The Warwick teachers have also provided a daily reading schedule, chapter discussion starters, and 17 related activities to extend the time families spend immersed in the story. One of the activi-

ties is to watch the 2008 movie version, which stars Abigail Breslin as Nim and Jodie Foster as her favorite author. Other activities include reading other survival stories, like “Island of the Blue Dolphins”; visiting the National Aquarium in Baltimore to learn more about marine life; building a raft out of coconuts; or constructing a volcano like the book’s Fire Mountain. The Warwick Education Foundation funds programs beyond the school district’s budget to enrich learning opportunities for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The funding supports teaching grants, like One Book One School One Community, as well as many other tools and resources. For more information, contact info@ WarwickEF.org.

Journaling For Self And Community Library Offers Chance To Be Part Of Historic Project On June 24, Diane Guscott, community relations and development coordinator for the Lititz Public Library, gave a virtual class called Journaling for Life. The class was based on a live journaling presentation that Guscott, who has been journaling for nearly three decades, had given live a few years ago. “Journaling was very helpful to me during the pandemic,” recalled Guscott. “It kept me sane.” Guscott resurrected the journaling presentation to encourage area residents to journal for their own mental health, but also to draw attention to the Community Journaling Project that the library started during the pandemic. The journaling project offers three journals, each with a specific prompt, to library patrons. A display in the library explains more about the project and offers a card for each journal. The card can be taken to the circulation desk to check out the journal for a week or more. Participants have the

County Treasures - Heritage Press Museum The Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster, has its roots in the Lancaster Cultural History Museum, once located in the Lancaster Trust Performing Arts Center. Ken Kulakowsky is one of the volunteers at the Heritage Press and a member of the .918 Club, a group dedicated to preserving the art of printing and named for the height of a piece of type. Volunteers from the club man the museum when it is open Thursdays through Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., and the first and third Fridays of each month from 5 to 9 p.m. More information about the museum may be found at www.918club.org. According to Kulakowsky, in 2004, the cultural museum received a donation of

will spend five minutes to five hours (with visitors).” The museum asks that groups set up an appointment to visit. Among the presses on display is a 1750 common press. “This press was in the Smithsonian for a while,” said Kulakowsky, who added that when the press was found in the basement of a church in Maryland, someone who knew of the club contacted club representatives. A Ben Franklin-era press is on display, and Kulakowsky noted that those studying the American Revolution or the War of 1812 are often interested in learning about that particular piece of equipment. Lancaster holds a littleknown place in American history because of its printing prowess, noted Kulakowsky. “The Articles of Confederation were written

printing equipment, and the organization sought volunteers who had experience with letter presses. An exhibit was set up and ran from April until the end of 2004. In early 2005, more equipment was donated, and the exhibit opened again in April, with the display running until 2009, when a state budget cut forced the museum to close. The printing equipment was not technically part of the museum collection, so the printers sought a new home, eventually landing at Building Character, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, where the members print bags for the many crafters who sell items there. Kulakowsky said the volunteers are happy to demonstrate the presses and even allow visitors to print items such as coasters. “We have no canned presentation,” he explained. “We

The .918 Club is working to complete the Heritage Press Education Center at Thaddeus Stevens School of Technology. The eighth annual Lancaster Printers Fair, which will be held on the 300 block of North Queen Street, Lancaster on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 and 18, will benefit the center. A Wayzgoose and Surplus Letterpress Sale will take place at 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster on Sept. 17 from 5 to 9 p.m. Kulakowsky explained that a wayzgoose is an event that traditionally involved printing competitions and eating roasted goose. LIVE THE LIFE YOU WANT TO LIVE Specialty Medicine, a unique practice designed to meet all of your healthcare needs.

Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training.

Specialists representing a wide array of medicine practice together at the same location to deliver personalized care in a collaborative, patient-centered setting.
