Cavod Academy’s second 2019 summer musical theater camp has yet to begin, but Cordell Huyard, who will direct the camp’s production of “Mary Poppins Jr.,” is already praising the cast. “The cast is already blending well,” said Cordell, noting that the group had met for a read-through. “This is one of the strongest dance groups we have ever had in a junior show. We have a lot of triple threats in this cast,” he said, referring to performers who are proficient at singing, dancing, and acting. The cast, which is made up of Lancaster County students ages 10 to 18, will begin rehearsals at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Monday, July 29. Camp will run through Friday, Aug. 9. Performances will be held at The Junction Center on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11,
at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. “Mary Poppins,” a musical, is based on the book by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by Helen Lyndon Goff, a British novelist whose childhood experiences provided inspiration for the story of Mary Poppins. Travers’ books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage musical ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013. The play tells the story of the Banks family in London. The family is struggling with two difficult children, Jane and Michael, played by Cate Caplan and Josiah Henne, respectively. The children have managed to derail every nanny their parents have hired. While George Banks, played by Charlie Hill, insists on a strict nanny, the children are intrigued when the mysterious Mary Poppins, played by Celeste

backgrounds will deliver content in both interview and lecture-style formats. Burge noted that this year’s lineup represents the nonprofit sector, the church sector, and the business world. “I think GLS does an incredible job having a diverse lineup of speakers and content,” said Burge. “What that means is that someone who wants to be challenged in the business mind will be, or if they want to be challenged in social justice, they will be. It’s a very diverse faculty and content.” Among this year’s speakers will be adventurer and survival expert Bear Grylls, known for having been a member of the British Special Forces, climbing Mount Everest, and crossing the Arctic Ocean in an inflatable raft. Grylls is also known as a supporter of the Alpha Course and for his groundbreaking television work. Danielle Strickland, pastor, author, and justice advocate, will also speak. Strickland was a member of the Salvation Army for more than 20 years and is an ambassador for Stop the Traffik. Burge noted that author Patrick Lencioni will speak about the dynamics of teams. “He is one (speaker) that (attendees) want back every year,” noted Burge. Other speakers will include pastor Craig Groeschel; entertainment marketer Bozoma Saint John; author and leadership coach Jo Saxton; speaker and researcher Jason Dorsey; Aja Brown, mayor of the city of Compton, Calif.; fashion design founder and women’s advocate Liz Bohannon; social entrepreneur Dr. Krish Kandiah; author and leadership consultant Todd Henry; author, blogger, and entrepreneur Jia Jiang; former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss; and author and producer DeVon Franklin. Burge noted that joining a localized host site has networking advantages for those who attend. “In the Ephrata

community, there are so many businesses and churches (attending), and there are so many people to rub shoulders with that you never thought (you might meet).” Sahd added that last year’s event drew more than 300 attendees and that this year’s registration number is quickly approaching that mark. “We really want to be a resource to leaders in our community at any level,” he noted, adding that all types of leaders can benefit from GLS, ranging from those leading in their own homes to those who lead large organizations. “For folks who don’t know they’re leaders, but are curious, this will inspire them,” he said. “We feel it is a unique way to resource the community, and we are uniquely equipped to provide this.” Sahd added that local organizations that plan to bring employees to the venue include CrossNet Ministries of New Holland and the Ephrata School District administrative team. Since many of the speakers will be conversing on their writing topics, LCBC is prepared to help attendees who want more content than what is available on the screen. “This is just good information,” said Burge. “You receive a notebook to take tons of notes, (but) we have a bookstore where books related to the content may be purchased.” GLS at LCBC Ephrata will open at 8:30 a.m. for registration on Aug. 8. Sanctuary doors will open at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8 and 9, and speakers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Because the simulcast originates in the Central time zone, the event will run until 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 8. Organizers encourage individuals to register for GLS prior to the event at www.LCBCchurch.com/GLS, but day-of registration will also be available. Readers who have questions may call 717-733-0711.

Lifecycles from pg 1 Couple To Bicycle Across Country By Chelsea Peifer
Bicycling across the United States has always been a dream of Erin Steinweg’s, and this summer that dream will come to fruition as she and her fiancé, Garrett Collins, make the trek across the country. The pair will fly to the West Coast in August to set off on a self-supported bicycle ride from Eugene, Ore., to Yorktown, Va. Steinweg and Collins will be on the road for approximately 60 days to cover a total of 4,200 miles - all while carrying their own tents, sleeping bags, and other supplies. “We weren’t sure when we would get to do it, because there are three main things you need to do a trip like this: time, money, and health,” explained Collins. “But we both had time off and everything else just came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey with a friend a few
years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach at-risk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Plus, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a cross-country bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. Steinweg and Collins are hoping that their own journey will inspire those riders as they train and prepare. “We want to show them that anyone can do it,” said Collins. Training for Steinweg and Collins has mostly consisted of lots of bicycle rides. Meals will generally be purchased from gas station convenience stores, with the occasional sit-down meal to refuel.

Generators that attach to and are powered by bicycle wheels will enable Steinweg and Collins to keep their phones charged. The pair plans to utilize an app called Warm Showers that connects bicycle tourists worldwide with hosts that offer free hospitality - whether a place to wash up, get a beverage, or spend the night. “A lot of churches will open up their doors too, letting cyclists utilize their youth centers or other spaces like a hostel,” Collins noted. The cross-country ride is not the first incredible physical feat for either Steinweg or Collins, who first met while competing in the annual Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Collins got hooked on triathlons in high school and recently accomplished an Ironman. Steinweg began doing triathlons during college and completed the Boston Marathon in 2018. The two are planning a May 2020 wedding. To donate toward the couple’s campaign for Lifecycles, visit www.go fundme.com/coast-to-coast-campaignfor-lifecycles. on Aug. 6, Erin Steinweg (left) and Garrett Collins plan to bicycle approximately 4,200 miles from the Pacific coast of Oregon to the Atlantic coast of Virginia in about 60 days. Winifred Banks, played by Hannah Whisman. Cordell said he chose the classic show because of the fun experience it will offer campers and because of the wisdom it offers to people of all ages. “There are great lessons in it, noted Cordell. He also wanted to introduce campers to the efforts required to produce a rigorous show such as “Mary Poppins. “The challenges are living up to the expectation, making it your own, and capturing the magic of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, said Cordell. “(There’s a challenge in) bringing (the show) to life on stage (with a cast of) young people. According to Cordell, the play is somewhat different from the well-known movie, with a few songs added and
others changed slightly, but keeping all the magic of the original. “All the things you love are in there, said Cordell, who listed “A Spoonful of Sugar, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, “Step in Time, and “Chim Chim Cher-ee among the many musical numbers. Music direction for the show will be provided by Amy Rau, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the dance numbers. Cordell invites area families to make the trip to Manheim to see the show. “Bring the children to The Junction Center, he said. “It’s a cool space, and you get to see where WJTL broadcasts from. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.
