Eva Gallagher has always enjoyed working with clay. “Even as a kid I loved sculpting,” reported Gallagher. “Whether it was polymer clay or air-dry clay, I loved making art that occupied a three-dimensional space,” said the recent Warwick High School (WHS) graduate.

When Akron resident Jeff Musser was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1999 at the age of 42, doctors prescribed several months of chemotherapy with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant following remission. “At that time, insurance didn’t cover bone marrow transplants,” recalled Musser. “A bunch of my friends got together, and they raised about $35,000 for me.”

Golf Tournament To Benefit Iron-Leg Corp Eight-year-old Parker Millhouse hops ahead of his father, Matt, to a pavilion located in a Lancaster park. Without hesitation, he leaps on a picnic table and from there straddles one of the pavilion poles. Using his powerful arms, his full left leg, and his right stump, Parker climbs up the pole. His prosthetic leg lies on the bench of a nearby picnic table. Parker had asked his dad, Matt, to

help him remove the device because it was making his stump itch. Parker’s fifth and current prosthesis sports camo on the material that fits around his stump. Matt said Parker enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. “He uses his arms all the time,” said Matt. “He’s very muscular.” “I climbed a giant rope,” Parker said of a recent activity. Parker is the poster child for Iron-

Leg Corp, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has a goal of helping raise funds to help children obtain needed prosthetics and receive therapy to learn to use them. “We want to get the more advanced prosthetics (for children),” explained Matt, who told the story of a youngster named Shawn, who lives in York and is currently being helped by the organization. Matt learned about Shawn when he read an article about him online and was able to contact Shawn’s mother. “(In the) article … his mom was saying insurance wouldn’t cover a better hand,” said Matt, who noted that Shawn was using a strap to hold a bow so he could practice playing the violin. “When I called her, she said he got (a moderately more advanced) hand

when she raised money through (crowdsourcing).” Matt explained that insurance will generally cover only the most basic prosthetics for children because they grow so fast. He added that limbs can cost as much as $85,000. The mechanical hand that Iron-Leg hopes to purchase for Shawn will have advanced technology, allowing him to control the hand from his stump. Matt said Iron-Leg will need to raise $10,000 to help make that purchase. To raise those funds, Iron-Leg is planning a benefit golf tournament for Saturday, Sept. 11. Matt acknowledged that the event is being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and noted that three of the organizers are veterans. He said that a

large flag will be part of the event. The tournament will be held at The Highlands of Donegal, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy, and will include a silent auction and dinner. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., and there will be a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Organizers have invited Shawn to be present at the tournament. 717-733-1048 “You can see every color of the rainbow on the surface of the bubble,” said Boyer, noting that white light is made up of all the colors of the spectrum and that the surface of the bubble divides the light into individual colors based on the thickness of that area of the bubble. “Every place you see yellow it’s the same thickness,” said Boyer, who also demonstrated that because water holds a bubble together, touching a bubble with something wet will not pop it. “Let’s see if I can touch a bubble without making it pop,” he said, proceeding to touch a bubble with his tongue. “Do not try this at home; it tastes terrible,” said Boyer, who noted that the bubble did not pop because his tongue is covered with saliva, which is mostly water. A large part of the presentation involved Boyer making

different shapes and sizes of bubbles using a variety of objects he had brought along. Among these were a rubber band, a headband, string, Mardi Gras beads, and a pair of giant scissors. Using a special machine, he also created smoke bubbles, explaining that bubbles can be created from any type of gas surrounded by water. Toward the end of the show, Boyer endeavored to blow enormous bubbles, including doughnut bubbles, so named for their resemblance to the shape of the tasty treat, and bubbles that he called “Chinese Dragon” bubbles because they are large, long, and colorful. More information about Lititz Library programs may be found at https://lititz library.org. Those wishing to learn about Boyer’s shows may visit https://jeffboyer.com.

Boyer’s presentation, which was both educational and entertaining, was part of the library’s summer programming schedule. Families that had registered to attend brought their chairs and blankets and spread out on the vast lawn behind the library at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Boyer began the show by educating the gathering about bubbles. “Is there anyone who can tell me what a bubble is?” asked Boyer, who went on to explain that the ephemeral creations are literally air surrounded by a wall of water. “Every bubble has three layers,” said Boyer. “It has two layers of bubble solution and in between those layers is a layer of water and water has something called surface tension.” Boyer noted that surface tension holds a bubble together and pulls it into a spherical shape.

Fellow WHS 2021 graduate Emily Paynter did not realize her love of the medium until she was a junior. “Ceramics first sparked my interest last year (during) first semester in my sculpture class,” she noted. Both students were taught by WHS faculty member Nate Nixdorf, who recognized their talents and suggested they enter the American Museum of Ceramic Art’s (AMOCA) 2021 annual High School Exhibition Program. Since 2014, AMOCA has hosted an annual juried exhibition showcasing the work of high school students studying the ceramic arts. Gallagher’s piece, called “Under Pressure,” a representation of a foot stepping on a head, and Paynter’s “Chameleon,” a detailed lizard perched on a mug, were both selected by AMOCA, and their work was exhibited virtually from WHS. The foot sculpture that gained Gallagher recognition was inspired by her seeking the answer to the question, “How can I convey emotion through the human form?” “I had previously made sculptures with hands and busts, so I wanted to explore the next challenge in anatomy: feet,” explained Gallagher. Looking to incorporate emotion in the piece, Gallagher said as she began sculpting she realized she could create a scene of a foot stepping on a head. “The coolest part about the piece is that it retains some function, as the ankle is hollowed and could be used as a very unique type of vase,” she noted.

Paynter also wanted her piece to be both functional and sculptural. Continuing with the animal theme that was the focus of an independent study, she pictured the chameleon tail as a useful appendage. “I could envision a chameleon perched on the edge of a mug with its tail wrapping around into a handle,” she shared. Paynter said that her journey in 3D art has been positively influenced by Nixdorf. “While taking Ceramics 1, Mr. Nixdorf reached out to me and offered me a spot for an independent study second semester, which really encouraged my interest in ceramics,” Paynter shared. “He encouraged me to push my limits on size, think critically and experiment beyond solely functional pieces.” Likewise, Gallagher said that Nixdorf has guided her by encouraging her to attend Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., where she will study in the fall. Not only has Nixdorf influenced her to refine her skills and discover her style, but Gallagher noted that he has also led her to discover a passion for art and provided constant support. Gallagher said she loves working with clay because the medium combines function and visual interest. Paynter agreed that ceramics hold her interest for the same reason. “What I also really like about ceramics is the fact that you can incorporate art into everyday life due to its functionality,” she shared.

ner will be held at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24. In 2001, the Jeff Musser Foundation became an official nonprofit. Working with social workers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Hershey, and Nemours in Wilmington, Del., the organization works to alleviate financial obligations that can become burdensome. “We try to keep (the family) in their home, so we make mortgage payments, rents, utilities, and car payments,” said Musser. Larry Shirk, who helps the organization fundraise, said that the hospital social workers who contact Musser with information about families that need help are crucial to the system. Musser contacts referred families by phone when he is allowed and then sends requests to the organization’s six-member board. Larry’s wife, Judi, acts as administrator, getting checks to families in need. Over the last year or so, communication between Musser, board members, and the Shirks has been done electronically so the work of the foundation could continue. “After this year, we will have given out $2 million,” said Musser,

who noted that donations were down significantly in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. “The best way to help is to visit our website and donate money,” shared Musser, adding that the organization is happy to accept checks. He pointed out that administrative costs are negligible. “We don’t take any costs out,” he said. “If you give us $100, (that) $100 goes to the families.” Readers who would like to know more about the organization and its work may visit https://jeff musserfoundation.org/ or call 717673-6333.

After Musser underwent 28 months of chemotherapy, doctors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital decided not to perform the bone marrow transplant. “When I got well after two years, I had $35,000,” said Musser, who also had a heightened awareness of the situations faced by the families of children with the same type of cancer he had. “My cancer was a childhood leukemia,” he said. “For kids it’s 80% curable, but for adults it’s 20% curable.” Although the high cure rate is good news for families whose children are diagnosed with the disease, Musser saw the toll it took on parents. “I was receiving a lot of my chemo with kids and their parents and hearing about how they were trying to make ends meet,” he said, adding that often one parent stops working to care for the child. “A lightbulb went off, and I thought, ‘I will use this $35,000 for that.’” Because the initial funds were raised by friends of Musser who held a golf tournament, he decided to hold another. This year, the foundation will hold its 20th golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club on Wednesday, June 23. A fundraising Cadillac din-

Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training.
