GOTR Fall Registration To Open New Curriculum Planned For Third Through Fifth Grades By Ann Mead Ash

During the spring 2018 semester, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster boasted teams in every school district in the county. Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expects about 850 girls in elementary and middle school to sign up to benefit from the program in the new school year, noting that many of those will be introduced to the new curriculum, available to girls in the third- through fifth-grade program this fall. Girls who take part in the fall session will complete the program by completing a 5K at Millersville University in November. GOTR is a youth development program that works with girls to help

them find their potential and pursue their dreams. The goal of the program is to give girls access to their inner strength by working with trained coaches in small groups. During the program, girls in elementary and middle school are encouraged to develop skills and habits they can rely on throughout life. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote health. The middle school program goes by the name Heart and Sole. West described the new curriculum as having the same great mission, but utilizing new activities and exercises. “The first four weeks, lessons focus on the girl herself,” explained West, who See GOTR pg 6

Girls on the Run programs aim to help girls to grow individually while also working to develop team-building skills. Girls complete a 5K at the end of the program in celebration of what they have achieved.

Bookworms Invited To Frolic By Ann Mead Ash

When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” See Bookworm Frolic pg 4

Reenie Panzini, pilot program director for the True Colors adult enrichment camp being held at The Emerald Foundation Community Campus (The E) this summer, was looking for a day program for her daughter, Sophia, who has special needs and had aged out of school. LET’S CELEBRATE

A catered hors d’oeuvre reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. will provide time for guests to interact with the children and to experience a bit of what life is like in the Baba Nyumbani Micro Community through virtual reality goggles. “A micro community creates an authentic family support system for children who lost their family - a place where orphaned children can experience love and support with house moms and dads to help guide them through life while they pursue their vocational or academic dreams to successful independence,” Schneider explained. The program will begin at 7:15 p.m. and conclude by 9 p.m. A freewill offering will be received to benefit Horizon: Empower the Orphaned. A matching contribution will be made for up to $50,000. Child sponsorship opportunities will also be available. Horizon’s sponsorship program allows individuals to make a monthly financial investment that will help to meet a child’s food, shelter, health care, education, and wellness needs through a holistic care approach and micro community model. Sponsors receive a child profile, letters from their child, and updates on the impact of their financial support, as well as access to a personal online interface to communicate with their child and offer encouragement. According to Schneider, Horizon was

founded in 2004 by a group of entrepreneurial philanthropists determined to solve the problem of ineffective institutional orphan care. Horizon aims to empower orphaned children to long-term sustainability with the goal of permanently breaking the cycle of poverty. “Our vision is to radically transform the way orphaned children are cared for by expanding our micro community model to countries around the world,” stated Schneider. Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also donated for the Frolic. While most of the books available for purchase will be set up outside the LMHS building under a tent, the music section and new books, which will be sold at special discount prices during the sale, will be located inside. Weaver-Kreider noted that food at this year’s sale will be provided by food trucks. “On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will have Italian sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and hot dogs, and on Saturday, we will have breakfast burritos, burgers, sandwiches, saffron and jasmine rice, kabobs, and Costa Rican chicken

According to Nofziger, nothing donated for the sale will end up in the trash. “At the very end of the sale, we allow organizations to bid by category,” Nofziger explained. “On Saturday, if there’s a category an organization is interested in, they can make a bid to buy all the books in that category that do not sell, and they just have to come and collect them.” Organizations that have an interest in buying a lot of books may contact Weaver-Kreider at 717-393-9745. Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. Postcard Expo from pg 1 Then and now, postcards are a snapshot - sometimes literally - of everyday life. “They are windows of the past,” said Lancaster County Postcard Club charter member Jere Greider. “I’ve learned more history from postcards than (I did) in school,” added Dede Schaeffer, who is also a charter member of the club, which was formed in 1990 at the behest of Jim Ward and Charlie Griffiths. Postcards were initially developed in the 1800s, and they were a highlight of the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. Initially, they consisted of an image on the front and a space to write the address on the back. In 1907, the divided back was introduced. “Until then, they couldn’t write more than the address on the back, so often they wrote (in small letters) around the border on the front,” Greider explained. Postcards from that time period still exist, as do others produced in the years since. Uncountable postcards will be displayed and available for purchase at the 26th annual Postcard Exposition that the Lancaster County Postcard Club will host on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. A total of 25 dealers from five states are slated to

offer postcards with the themes of advertising, holidays, real photos, town views, and more. Prices typically range from a quarter to hundreds of dollars. Additionally, club members will exhibit boards displaying groups of cards in the subjects of Pennsylvania views, transportation, advertising, and real photos pre-1950. “You can look at the boards and get an idea of what (the subject) is all about,” Greider remarked. The expo is popular among postcard collectors, and a line usually forms at the door before the venue opens. The club also welcomes individuals who are new to the hobby. “People come in who’ve inherited cards and don’t know what to do with them,” Schaeffer related. Postcards were a form of communication heavily used before telephones became standard in homes. Recipients tended to collect the missives in albums. “(Households) had their family Bible, a photo album, and a postcard album,” Schaeffer said. “They’d sit down and look through the albums on Saturday nights.” Both the images on the front and the text on the reverse of postcards tell stories. Schaeffer noted that club members have discovered cards bearing the signatures of famous folks, and she has personally rubbed shoulders with

notable individuals who collect postcards. For club member Susan Glass, an interest in her hometown introduced her to deltiology - the word for the study and collection of postcards. “A lot of people look for views of their hometown,” Glass commented. “Once you get hooked, then you find something else to collect.” The Lancaster County Postcard Club welcomes new members, and guests may attend club meetings free of charge. True Colors, a camp for adults 21 years and up with intellectual disabilities, meets four days a week at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. “We meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m.,” explained Panzini, who added that the program started on June 26 and will run through mid-August. Panzini harbors hopes of turning the pilot into a year-round offering. “If things go well, we may try to become a nonprofit and turn into an adult enrichment full-day program,” she said. The program gives participants an opportunity to enjoy recreational activities while learning life skills, such as cooking, which can help the individuals live independently or even help them to gain employment. Panzini and her assistant, Alex Rittenhouse, said that the group hit the ground running with an activity that involved both cooking and developing sales skills. The E hosted 100 businesses at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce “pop-up” job fair on June 27, where True Colors sold baked goods. “We started off with a bang,” said Panzini. “We baked for

four hours. We made lots of cupcakes, cookies, and gluten-free treats, and the next day the campers set up a table in the lobby.” “That was a very successful day,” said Rittenhouse of the job fair, noting that the event gave campers a chance to develop important skills in the areas of socialization and developing relationships. “The job fair definitely allowed (campers) to explore what was going on (in the building),” Rittenhouse said. The organizations that were present learned about True Colors as well. “We talked to people about what we were doing. It was a really great day from that aspect,” Rittenhouse commented. The E is home to a number of local nonprofit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services. Panzini has reached out to the tenants to let them know campers would like to help. “(We are letting them know) that if they need volunteers to do light office work or cleaning, we can help,” she said. “We are hoping (volunteering) will be a big

part of (participants’) days.” Panzini added that the campers are already helping Lori Cubell, executive director of the Emerald Foundation, in a number of ways. In addition to the volunteering opportunities, Panzini and Rittenhouse have planned a number of activities for the campers, including playing basketball in The E gym and helping the foundation’s chef in the kitchen with food preparation. “The chef is teaching them chopping (of vegetables),” said Panzini. A succulent craft, games, and a scavenger hunt have all been part of the curriculum this summer, as well. Panzini has drawn on resources and her experience raising a child with special needs to design the program. “Sophia has been in specialneeds classes and camps since she was 8,” said Panzini. “We have a lot of teachers advising us.” Readers who would like to learn more about True Colors may look for updates on The Emerald Foundation Facebook page. Individuals with questions may email reeniepanzini@aol.com.

According to West and Johnson, coaching is an investment of less than four hours per week. Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS), 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, will hold an open house on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. Families and students in preschool through 12th grade are invited to attend. Attendees may meet the teachers, review the curricula, tour the campus, and meet school parents. The open house will allow attendees to expedite the enrollment process for the upcoming school year. LCCS is a Christian school for students in preschool through 12th grade. Two models of education are available. The traditional model for elementary and secondary students provides a comprehensive program with instruction provided on campus five days per week. This model includes academics that are taught with a biblical perspective to help students grow academically and spiritually

teacher-directed academic activities at home under the guidance of parents. Students’ educational experiences are also outreach oriented. Through its values and heritage, the school seeks to empower students to be confident in whom God has created them to be. LCCS has been providing a Christian education for more than 65 years in Lancaster County. Reservations are requested by visiting www.lccs.cc/openhouse. For information about enrollment, readers may contact Diane Dissmore, director of admissions, at 717-556-0711, ext. 214.
