HOHC: New Location, Same Life-Affirming Mission BY ANN MEAD ASH
n the last five years, the ministry originally known as House of His Creation (HOHC) and briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), has been through a number of changes. After becoming FORM in 2016, the ministry moved from Lititz Pike to the Brickerville area, but as
to provide those services through maternity housing for women age 18 and up - especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and have been sober for several months. The women must also be willing to consider adoption and parenting plans and to take advantage of growth opportunities, and be educated toward reaching goals.

of late 2019, the name had reverted to HOHC, and in February 2021, the ministry moved to the site of a former bed-and-breakfast at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. Through all the changes, the mission of the ministry has been to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. In its new location, HOHC will continue
House of His Creation staff (from left) Michelle Gibbs, Matthew Neff, and Callie Neff are ready to welcome clients at their new location in Lititz.
Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs. “We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.” Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “ When a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the roles and the relationships around that.” Callie noted that when the pregnancy was not the woman’s first, other issues may be involved. “(When a woman has) multiple children (who are) part of their story, then it becomes reunification or rebuilding relationship with children they haven’t actively been parenting,” said Callie. “Those children wouldn’t necessarily live here, but we would help (the woman) negotiate toward a goal

A Story Of HOPE
Hosted by the Hempfield recCenter 950 Church St. Landisville, PA
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, an organization that helps create financial solvency in 15 countries through savings and microfinance groups, looks back on the last 18 months, he points out that the organization did something out of the ordinary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We initially (gave) a lot of aid,” said Rutt, who noted that HOPE spent $1 million to help clients. Rutt praised HOPE CEO Peter Greer for his leadership of the organization through the tumultuous time. “(None of us) knew what we were facing, but there was a lot of

as is the custom in that country. Marie was connected to a church that hosts a HOPE International savings group called Mutual Support. Marie joined the group and grew both spiritually and in her business sense. “She was making about 50 cents a day working in fields and gardens,” said Rutt, who noted that Marie was able to save 25 cents a week from her pay, and with a $5 loan from the group she started a small business selling avocados and bananas. Eventually Marie began keeping goats, and she purchased rental properties. When Marie learned that members of her deceased husband’s family were in financial trouble, she forgave them and helped them financially. “She got them connected to their own

savings groups,” said Rutt. “It’s a really cool cycle because she used her talents and skills, and she is now able to help others in the community,” he added. “(Marie is) not just better off financially, but (she had) forgiveness and compassion on someone (about whom) she could have said, ‘I don’t want anything to do with (them) because of what they did to (me).’” According to Rutt, Marie’s story is an example of the heart behind HOPE. “The cool thing is that over the course of 23 years we have been able to raise about $200 million, but we have been able to lend $1.3 billion,” said Rutt. “It’s a really effective way to help … by partnering with strong, working, (deserving) families like Marie’s.”

prayer, reliance on God, our board, our team, and the indigenous leaders and clients in the world,” he said. To help offset those expenditures, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its 21st annual golf tournament, to be held at three different locations on Friday, Sept. 17. The round at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave.,York, will begin at 1 p.m. Two rounds will be held the same day at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Dr., Lebanon, beginning at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. The third location will be Bridgewater Golf Club, 601 Chestnut Hill Road, York, beginning at 9 a.m. More information about the tournaments may be found at www.hopeinternational.org/pagolf. Those who wish to sponsor the event may email asmith@hope international.org or call 717-4643220, ext. 544. Golfers are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 3. Rutt noted that the pandemic pushed what he calls the “fragile fringe,” of about 100 million people below the poverty line. “But there were bright spots,” added Rutt. “There was resilience, and a lot of our clients have grown.” Rutt went on to tell the story of Marie Ndereyimana, a client in Burundi, East Africa. After Marie’s husband died in 2014, all his property reverted back to his family,

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is a well-known saying. It is a concept that organizers of the annual Woodcrest 3D Archery Shoot have found to work well. “We pretty much do the same thing over and over, and the guys still keep coming,” said Jason Martin, operations director for Woodcrest Retreat, a camp and conference center located at 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata. The 12th annual shoot will be held at Woodcrest on Saturday, Aug. 28. The course will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., after which a hot brunch will be served. The course will reopen at 11 a.m. and remain open until 3 p.m. There is a fee to take part in the shoot, which includes brunch, a speaker, and opportunities to win door prizes. The price will be discounted for those age 15 and under. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in only the afternoon shoot. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together. This year’s course will consist of 30 targets depicting North American wildlife. The
speaker during brunch will be Tim Stauffer, pastor at East Hanover Mennonite Church in Hershey, who will deliver a short meditation on a huntingrelated topic. Connie Dienner believes in the power of faith. For years, she had thought about expanding Cavod Performing Arts, the nonprofit organization she founded in New Holland 20 years ago. “It had been on my heart for a long time to open a second location,” she stated. “Lots of people would say to me over the years, ‘I wish you were a little closer to Lancaster.’ One day, God opened up the doors for an opportunity for us.” Cavod’s second campus is located in Supply, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. It will hold an open house on Sunday, Aug. 8, from 3 to 6 p.m. The open house will feature free food, games and prizes, tours of the facility and opportunities to meet the instructors. A ribbon cutting will be held at 4 p.m., and the open house will also showcase live performances. Cavod moved into the Manheim location on July 1. The 1,000-square-foot space required some work to transform it into a performing arts studio, including replacing the

While the New Holland location of Cavod offers more than 100 classes in music, theater and dance, the Manheim site will start smaller. “We’ll be starting off with dance classes,” Haney said, adding that Cavod will launch a new training program for dancers ages 18 to 25 called Ornate Dance Theatre. Haney noted that the new space helps Cavod fulfill its mission of guiding students to “create with purpose” while also connecting with the community. “It’s a great opportunity to expand into our community and build relationships with more people,” she said. “I’m excited to welcome new students. I’m excited to see kids discover their passion.” Classes will begin at Cavod’s Manheim location on Monday, Aug. 23. For more information, visit https://cavod.org or call 717-354-3355.

didn’t want to wait (to have children) because I was confident that I would be able to do both.” She soon realized sacrifices would have to be made if she wanted to further her education and raise two babies at the same time. “There were days we had frozen meals for dinner; there were days where the house was an absolute wreck because other things needed to come first,” she recalled. “You can’t do everything, and that’s OK. There’s no way I could have done all of this without the support of Brandon.” Just a month ago, Kayla graduated cum laude with a Master of Science in clinical counseling. During the spring semester of 2021, Kayla interned in the Partial Hospitalization Program at Community Services Group (CSG). She completed 600 hours for her graduate degree and was offered a full-time position at CSG as a group therapist. Kayla noted that what she loves

most about being a mother is watching two humans - whom she created and carried - grow, smile, laugh, crawl, walk, and talk. “I love watching them learn, but I also love knowing that they came from me and they’re mine,” she said. Kayla said that one of the best resources that helped her navigate motherhood is social media, specifically Instagram. “My son had lip and tongue ties I never would have known about had it not been for Instagram,” she said. According to Kayla, being a mother has shaped her dreams. She would eventually like to work with postpartum mothers to help them adjust to their new lives and roles. “Postpartum care is lacking and there is not enough attention being brought to it. I would love to try and fill that gap,” she stated. “It seems like this was all supposed to happen. This is what God wants me to do right now, and I’m content with that.”

I felt as though didn’t listen to me, and I didn’t know how to advocate for myself,” explained Kayla. “Because of that, I knew I wanted to be a professional in the psychology field to help someone like me.” Kayla graduated from Warwick High School in 2012 and enrolled in courses at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, in January 2013. In the spring of 2015, Kayla began her studies at Millersville University, where she majored in psychology. By the fall of 2017, she had earned her bachelor’s degree; gotten married to her husband, Brandon; and started a graduate program in clinical counseling at Millersville University. While working toward her master’s degree, Kayla gave birth to two children. Adley was born in June of 2019, and Noah was born in November of 2020. “Being a mom was always number one on my list of things I wanted to be, and school came second to that,” she said. “I
