Free Socially Distanced Concert Planned By Ann Mead Ash

According to Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation, an outdoor concert in the Mary Oehme Gardens is a summer tradition held when the annuals and herbs are in full bloom. “This is our annual Evening of Music, which has been around for decades,” said Van Brookhoven. This year, however, in light of COVID-19 restrictions, the musical presentation is being marketed as a socially distanced event. The free concert will be held on Sunday, Aug. 9, in the gardens located behind the Lititz Museum, 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz. The concert, which will feature the sounds of Swing Street, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Swing Street is known for fun renditions of mainstream jazz standards and jazz adaptations of popular tunes. To maintain social distancing and

adhere to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance will be regulated. “We are capping it at about 175 people, which is well below the 250 threshold,” said Van Brookhoven. Attendees will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis to allow enough safe room for everyone. Once inside, parties will be asked to take advantage of the ample space allowed by the large gardens. “We are asking that parties have at least six feet of space between them,” Van Brookhoven said. Organizers also ask that masks be worn by all attendees. Van Brookhoven acknowledged that it is especially important this summer to give area residents an enjoyable evening out, while observing tradition. “(This concert) has always been the day after the Lititz Rotary Craft Show, which is canceled this year,” he reported. The 90-minute event will give attendees a chance to relax in lawn chairs or See Free Concert pg 2

Philip Goropoulos, president of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health (CHI), is firm when discussing the beliefs of the organization’s board concerning the new St. John Neumann School for Children and Families that CHI is building on Locust Street in Columbia. “Everything we offer should be available to everybody,” said Goropoulos. “Every student will have every opportunity within the center. Nothing will cost extra. It will all be included.” The school, which will initially accommodate 60 children ranging in

age from six weeks to 5 years old, will embody a new perspecive on care. “Our family-focused approach to child care revamps the traditional model,” said Goropoulos, who noted the goal will be not just preparing children for school, but helping get them ready for life by making health and wellness part of the curriculum. Special benefits at the school that will be offered to all students and families will include a family wellness coach and a family wellness caseworker. Carol Johnston, family wellness coach, will meet with every family that comes into the center. “(Johnston) will help families learn to work within the community and with one another,” said Goropoulos, who added that every family will have an assessment. “We will evaluate how the child is doing, what family dynamics look like, and areas of potential improvement, challenges they might be facing, and strategies (they could utilize),” said Goropoulos, who added that families will have access to these services as long as they are enrolled. If necessary, the family could be referred to a family wellness caseworker, who will act as a resource. The idea for a school grew out of the Healthy Columbia Project CHI engaged in more than two years ago. “We used to do small

grant making to organizations that were working with children in addition to our dental program,” said Goropoulos, who noted that the board was looking for ways do more for children. “(They wanted) a strategy that would transform how communities were responding to health and developing health care habits,” he recalled. Healthy Columbia worked to identify areas common to healthy communities, including housing and neighborhoods, food access, early childhood education, and access to health and health care. “These are the four components to impact a community … to put that community in a better position to be healthy and thrive,” said Goropoulos. In response to what the board members learned, CHI decided to build a school. “It’s a seven- to 10-year investment to build these structures and programs, and then they become supported by the community,” said Goropoulos, who noted that first discussion of the project dates back to December 2017. The project was approved in 2018, and the organization then purchased the building at 401 Locust St., along with the adjacent parking lot at 403 Locust. CHI broke ground for the school in May 2019. “We gutted the second and third floors of the existing build-

COVID-19 restrictions halted construction in March. “We were a few weeks away from the building being finished when they shut down,” said Goropoulos, who noted that despite the shutdown, the school was due to be completed at the end of June and is now slated to open in early November. The organization is working hard to meet new guide-

lines while offering high value to participating families. “If we can support family functioning to reduce the possibility of adverse childhood experiences, the savings to the community and the positive health results to children will be astronomical,” said Goropoulos. Chicken Barbecue To Benefit Mount Hope

Prayer Ride To Support Stoltzfoos Family

Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, will hold a drive-through chicken barbecue fundraiser for Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC) on Friday, Aug. 14, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot. The meal will include a barbecued half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll and butter, and applesauce. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, volunteers serving meals will follow CDC guidelines. Mount Hope, located in rural Rapho Township, is a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center that serves seniors regardless of their ability to pay. Proceeds will go toward Mount Hope’s Coronavirus Assistance Fund to help cover the unanticipated increased cost of safely providing care for residents, including help with purchasing personal protective equipment, covering unforeseen expenses in additional building and cleaning supplies, easing the financial shortfall from reduced revenue, providing for unexpected costs as staff is needed to fulfill roles once held by volunteers, and acquiring technology to combat residents’ social isolation and provide a positive family connection. The per-meal cost is $12. Preorders will be taken, and meals will be saved under the name provided when

ordered. All payments are to be made when picking up the meals. No handling of money will occur during the food pickup. A drop box will be provided for customers to leave payment in the form of cash or of checks made payable to “Mount Hope NRC.” To preorder, readers may call Kris Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene.org by Sunday, Aug. 9.

Royer’s Flowers Collects For Area Food Banks

Free Sweets Thirstdays from pg 1

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts’ annual food drive collected more than 1,100 pounds of nonperishable items to benefit 11 food banks in the company’s seven-county market. Royer’s Stems Hunger, as the food drive is known, ran from June 27 to July 4 at the florist’s 16 stores. The recipient food banks were Helping Harvest in Berks County, New Hope Ministries and Salvation Army of Carlisle in Cumberland County, Hershey Food Bank and Manna Food Pantry at Pennbrook United Church of Christ in Dauphin County, South Central Community Action Programs in Franklin County, Columbia Food Bank, Ephrata Area Social Services and Food Hub/Lancaster County Council of Churches in Lancaster County, Lebanon County Christian Ministries and St. Matthew Food Pantry in York County. Food drive donors received a free carnation for each nonperishable food item they contributed, up to six per visit. Royer’s Stems Hunger has

Sept. 10 and 24, Oct. 8 and 22, and Nov. 5 and 19. Prepackaged treats such as granola bars and pastries will be available at the church during those times along with coffee, apple juice, and orange juice. The church has two entrances and a portico that will make it easy for visitors to drive through and for volunteers to distribute the food items. Signage along the road will alert drivers to stop in for a treat if they so desire. Speedwell Church draws members from Lebanon, Lititz, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens, Denver, and beyond. “(Our membership) is pretty far reaching,” said Willison, noting that Brubaker Valley Road is heavily traveled on weekdays. “In the morning, this road has constant traffic,” he added, explaining that those traveling between areas west of Lancaster and the greater Ephrata area use the road to avoid the busier highways. “There are work trucks, tractor-trailers … there is all this traffic, and we think that’s a great opportunity to meet people.” The effort has roots in a similar program Willison was involved in when he served as executive pastor of Hempfield

topped 1,100 pounds in each of its 10 years for a total of nearly nine tons collected. Lebanon-based Royer’s operates 15 Royer’s stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin,

If people are struggling with food (insecurity), we can offer them food. We want to reach into our community and say, ‘What are your needs and how can we help you?’” Readers who would like to know more about the church may visit www.speedwellchurch.org.

It (was) not about getting members; it (was) about becoming friends.” Now Willison and members of Speedwell Church would like to offer the same to those who traverse the area on Thursday mornings. “(We hope to see) people who are heading to work and we will say, ‘Anything we could pray for (for you)?’” said Willison. “We aren’t going to say, ‘Come to our church’ or give

Local Counties Recognized For Generosity The Junkluggers Opens For Business portion of people in a given county making charitable donations. Chester, Lancaster, and York counties were among those included in the resulting list of the most generous counties in Pennsylvania. Chester County took the top spot, with Lancaster County taking fifth and York County placing 10th. To determine the amount of

R060514

Financial technology company SmartAsset recently released the results of a study it conducted to identify the Pennsylvania counties where residents are donating the most. To find the most generous places, the study measured how much money people in each county donated as a percentage of their income, as well as the pro-

money that people donate as a percentage of their income, SmartAsset first calculated the total net income of all people in each county. To do this, the company used tax return data and accounted for federal, state, and local taxes paid. Researchers also accounted for deductible entries, including mortgage interest, mortgage points, and mortgage insurance payments. They then divided each county’s total charitable donations by its total net income to see how much county residents are donating relative to their income. Next, SmartAsset divided the total number of tax returns with charitable contributions by the number of total tax returns for each county. This step gave researchers the proportion of people in each county who make charitable donations. The two factors were then indexed and equally weighted to yield the most charitable places index. For more information on the study and methodology, readers may visit https://smartadvisor match.com/data/most-generous -counties-2019/pennsylvania.

The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster is now available to serve residential customers and businesses in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties. Services include junk removal, appliance removal and furniture removal, as well as attic, basement and garage cleanouts. Franchise owner Jakub Mochon has always been concerned about the environment and the community in this area of Pennsylvania, which he calls home. Mochon left his career of 20 years in the medical device industry and launched the Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster. The eco-friendly junk removal company is on a mission to make Pennsylvania a little greener and eliminate 100%

of reusable waste from landfills by the year 2025. The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster is the second franchise located in Pennsylvania. Mochon decided to bring the business to his local area, as he has been a resident of Chester and Berks counties for the past 18 years. He said he believes the Junkluggers will bring a positive impact to the area as he develops relationships with local non-for-profit organizations that can benefit from gently used items that need a second home. The Junkluggers offers donation receipts and launched the Remix Market, a sister company to some of the Junkluggers franchishes, as a way to keep items

out of landfills. The Junkluggers focuses on green, communityoriented practices and striving to enhance lives, the community and the environment by donating, recycling, upcycling and supporting local charities. With the addition of Berks, Chester and Lancaster, the Junkluggers, founded in 2004, now has 30 locations open and operates across a total of 14 states, which are California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. As part of the Both Hands program, adoptive families are asked to coordinate a service project at a widow’s home. In turn, the family receives sponsorships that are used to finance the cost of the adoption. The Both Hands name symbolizes one hand for the widow and the other hand for the orphans. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Miller family and a team of volunteers will work at the home of a widow who resides in Ephrata. Her husband died unexpectedly this spring after being in a car accident and then contracting the COVID-19 infection. Her home is in need of some repairs, including landscaping, painting, minor electrical work and general tasks that are difficult for her to complete. After their application was approved by Both Hands, the Millers were asked to find a local widow in need. “We connected with (the widow in Ephrata) through a friend of a friend, Tiffany noted. “Thankfully, she was the first widow we met and it all worked out. She is so grateful. Both Hands, a Tennessee-based charity, was founded by JT Olson, who was taking part in a golf fundraiser. He sent out letters asking for sponsorships. “A friend wrote back on the letter and said, ‘Maybe if you were working on a widow’s house, I would sponsor you, but you are just playing golf,’ Tiffany said. “He decided he had a big heart for adopting and he and his family adopted as well, and he (formed) this organization. Tiffany and Tim currently have three sons - Cameron, 8; Lincoln, 6; and Theo, 3, who was adopted from

The Miller family, including (back, from left) Tiffany, Theo, Tim, (front) Cameron and Lincoln, hopes to welcome another child from South Korea. To help with adoption costs, the family will help out a local widow in need while seeking sponsorships through a program developed by the Both Hands organization.

South Korea in 2018. They are currently waiting to be matched with a boy or girl from South Korea. “We’re hoping we will get a match soon, said TIffany. “Once we are matched it’s about a year until we (can) travel and bring the child home. In preparation for the upcoming service project, the Millers recruited about 30 to 40 friends and family members to help out with the work. “Our church, Victory Church in Lancaster, is also involved, and people are bringing friends that are really handy to come help us out, said Tiffany. “Local businesses donated all of the supplies that we are going to use. Donating businesses include Home Depot in Lancaster, Longenecker’s Hardware in Manheim, Dave’s Roll Off Service in Ephrata, Advanced Trim Specialties in Kinzers and Buck’s Lawn Care Service in Lititz. “We’re planning to work from at least 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., depending on how long it takes to get stuff done, Tiffany pointed out. “We’ve been there three times to get measurements and figure out what supplies we need. The couple also sent out sponsorship letters asking for donations to help out with adoption costs. “Both Hands gives you all the resources that you need to get the project going, but the way to raise money is to gather a team of people to help us and we, along with the group, sent out sponsorship letters, Tiffany said. “All the money that comes in from sponsorship letters goes directly toward a tax-deductible fund that Both Hands sets up for us to pay for adoption expenses. The Millers also hope to raise awareness about the Both Hands organization. “We just loved the concept of it and wanted to be able to share it with other people and be able to fundraise this way, too, Tiffany said. Bicycle lanes are a prominent feature on some Lancaster city streets. On Walnut Street, most of the bike lane is against the sidewalk and protected from the left lane of traffic by a row of parking spaces. Anyone seated on the left side of parked vehicles must look to the lane behind their vehicle to ensure they do not open their doors into a cyclist’s path. Mullineaux shared that driver’s education courses are now teaching the Dutch Reach to open doors. Popularized by the Netherlands, where bicycles outnumber residents, the Dutch Reach is so named because a seated individual crosses their body with their opposite hand to open their car door. Doing so turns the individual’s body so it is more likely they see the lane toward the rear of the vehicle and thus spot any approaching cyclists. On rural routes, cyclists may encounter horsedrawn carriages. Bicycles are almost always faster, although Mullineaux said he has been known to draft behind a buggy in the presence of a tailwind. To safely pass a horse-drawn vehicle,

The advent of summer typically coincides with an increase of bicyclists on the roads. For some riders, cycling is a form of transportation. For others, it is a mode of relaxation and recreation. For everyone, however, safety is paramount. Lancaster Bicycle Club safety director John Mullineaux listed two overarching principles for safe riding: wear a helmet and behave like a vehicle. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) requires anyone under the age of 12 to wear a helmet, whether they are operating the bicycle or participating as a passenger on a bike or a bike-pulled trailer. PennDOT does not mandate helmets for riders age 12 and older, but it strongly recommends that everyone wears a helmet. Mullineaux agreed, saying, “Wear a helmet. They do help an enormous amount. I’m 70 years old, and I wear a helmet every time I ride. Although helmets are regulated for children, the age at which youngsters may ride on the road is not. Instead, that privilege depends on the training and the skill level of the individual rider. Some area school districts provide education to middle-grade students to encourage them to ride bicycles to school. Regardless of age, behaving like a vehicle while riding a bicycle might not be intuitive, but it is worth practicing. According to Mullineaux, in Pennsylvania, cyclists have the right to ride wherever they think it is safe to do so, with the exclusion of riding against traffic. “Always ride with traffic. Always, Mullineaux stressed. Pedestrians walk against traffic because they can quickly move to the side of the road when encountering oncoming vehicles. “If you’re riding a bicycle, you don’t have

time to get over when you see a car coming toward you, Mullineaux said. When Mullineaux learned to ride on the road, he was taught to put his wheels on the white fog line or stay as far to the edge of the road surface in the absence of the line. However, he later learned that doing so makes cyclists less visible to automobile drivers, it makes it tempting for drivers to try to squeeze by a bicycle, and there is nowhere to go if an animal runs in front of the bike or the road contains an obstacle. “I like the shoulder, but if you don’t have a shoulder to ride on, the next safest place is to have your wheels in the same place as the right-hand tires of an automobile, Mullineaux said. “(That way), in order for them to pass you, they must do a clean pass. Mullineaux related that he once encountered a person at a safety presentation who was upset that cyclists were taking up part of a lane while ascending a hill. He asked the individual how they would have behaved if the cyclist had instead been a piece of heavy equipment, emphasizing that it is important to give cyclists the same respect. On one-way streets, Mullineaux regularly rides in the middle of a lane because vehicles can safely pass him in the adjacent lane. For single-lane roundabouts, which have been slowly cropping up in Lancaster County, cyclists should take the lane. Motorists may have to spend a few extra seconds getting through the roundabout, but it is worth it to ensure everyone’s safety. To make left-hand turns on a two-way street, Mullineaux said that he gets close to the double yellow lines as soon as it is safe to do so and signals a turn. “If a car comes up behind me (and also plans to turn), they have to wait for me, he remarked.

Pet Photographers Offer Masks Local couple Linda and Philip Malin has been photographing local furry and feathered family members for 30 years. However, the coronavirus pandemic challenged their business, which involved pet photography home visits and pet portrait events at local pet stores. They had to find a way to survive this crisis, so Linda came up with the idea to put pet photos on masks. Pet owners are invited to send the Malins an image by email or mail and then place an order for a Furry Face Mask at www.LindaAndPhilipMalin.com. Contact information for submitting photos is available on the aforementioned website. The Malins will tweak the photo, print it on a mask and mail it directly to the customer. Pet owners can have a photo of their bird, cat, dog or reptile heatsealed and imprinted on a comfortable, two-ply, 100% polyester mask that can be washed and air dried. Individuals may also ask for a breed-specific pet from the Malins’ stock photography. While the Malins are used to working with pet expressions, the Furry Face Mask is not limited to pets. Some customers have designed their own artwork to put on their masks. For example, a gardener put her flowers on her mask, a groom put his new bride on his mask, a golfer put “hole-in-one” and the date on his mask and a musician put his tuba on a mask. Artists of all ages have individualized a logo to wear while at work. Creative dragons and unicorns are a common image for children’s face masks. For more information, readers may visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/malinscreativeconsultants. A fee is charged per mask; shipping is free.
