Golf Tournament Fundraiser To Support HOPE International By Ann Mead Ash
Her name is Lorraine Murungu. Her son, who is named Blessed, was born with cerebral palsy, and he is paraplegic and unable to speak. Murungu has learned to make rag dolls, a product that can be marketed heavily near the beginning of the school year in Zimbabwe, where Murungu lives. A loan from a HOPE International group has helped make her business possible. When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, landed in Zimbabwe with a team of 22 others in January, he was thinking about the difference
HOPE International has made by teaching individuals in 15 countries about savings groups and microfinance. But as he watched Murungu and other women who have benefited from HOPE as they worshipped God, he found himself learning from them. “I heard them talk, praying for each other and supporting each other, said Rutt, who was struck by the humility and gratitude he witnessed. “Before we left, Lorraine asked me, ‘What can we pray for, for you as you go back to Pennsylvania?’ That struck me as insightful and showed me so much depth of character and integrity, said Rutt.
HOPE International is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. The organization is currently planning its 18th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 14. Round one of the four-person scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a boxed breakfast and buffet lunch, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and See Golf Tournament pg 8

Jeff Rutt (left), founder and chairman of the board of HOPE International, and Kaitlyn Russell, events intern, jump for joy as another golf ball is placed in the thermometer that is symbolic of the funds raised by sponsorship of the organization’s 18th golf tournament, which will be held on Sept. 14 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. The organization is hoping to raise $350,000 from this year’s event.

Drew added that We Help Children is available to help families in need who contact the organization. “God has also given us a vision to do more in the poor communities,â€? said Drew. We Help Children is currently working to set up Children and Family Help Centers in communities so families can receive local help and give help in return. The organization is preparing to start two centers in Guatemala and one in Honduras. The center in Chicago is manned by Samantha Jakus, a Moody Bible Institute graduate who interned with the Metcalfs in Guatemala. “She came to us to ‌ learn how to work with children in crisis, and she is a gifted counselor,â€? explained Drew. Christian psychiatrist and bishop Dr. Enos Daniel Martin of Elizabethtown, who will speak on the connection between mental health and prayer. Martin was a member of the faculty at Penn State Hershey for 20 years. He also spent two decades working in prison psychiatry. Martin is currently the medical director of the Naaman Center, a Christian-based alcohol and drug rehabilitation and treatment center. On the topic of prayer and mental health, Martin has said, “Through all of my journey, I’ve become more and more impressed with what God can do through His humble servants who seek His face in prayer and less impressed with what I can accomplish through my training and degrees. Drew made it clear that choosing Martin was born of a concern for children everywhere. “We invite people to come and learn how to help and how to get help for

-Cindy says the focus is changing. “We are switching from the Metcalfs in Guatemala to We Help Children as an organization, explained Cindy. “It’s not about us, but about lots of layers of ministry. We hope it multiplies to lots of countries even if we are not there. With a goal of helping children in crisis wherever they are, We Help Children will hold its first Banquet With a Fiesta Flair on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens, 3716 E. Newport Road, Gordonville. The menu will feature stations sponsored by local restaurants that specialize in Spanish-style dishes, as well as a possible nachos bar. Video testimonies from young people whose lives have been changed by what God is doing in Guatemala will be on the agenda, and a live band will play Christian Spanish music. In addition, the Metcalfs often take orphaned children who need extra help into their home and work with children who are aging out of the orphanage to transition into adulthood. “We help them with school and work, and they graduate from us to more independence, said Drew. Cindy noted that nearly half a dozen children have successfully moved into adult life with their help. There is no cost to attend the banquet, but seating is limited to 200 on a firstcome, first-served basis and reservations are necessary to attend. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to attend may register by calling 717-517-2359 or emailing HelpChildrenWithUs@yahoo.com. Registration must be completed by Saturday, Sept. 8. Campers at Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata now have an added opportunity to learn about the wonders of creation as they traverse the 110 acres the camp offers. In pursuit of his Freedom Award, Trail Life USA trailman David Mease, a member of Trail Life Troop PA 0316, which meets in Lititz, built four outdoor kiosks he calls Creation Discovery Stations to help teach campers about certain insects, trees, animals, and birds, the majority of which are considered native to Pennsylvania. In January, Mease contacted Woodcrest Retreat executive director Cliff Martin about the possibility of completing his servant leadership project at the camp. “When (Mease) approached us about a project here, (the stations) came up as a great thing to tie into what we do with summer camp, said Martin. Mease said that Martin had photographs of similar stations that Mease could use as a prototype for his own. Mease, who credits his father, Dave, for suggesting the name “Creation Discovery Stations, began fundraising to purchase supplies by sending out sponsorship request letters to family members, friends, and fellow church members between January and April.
COMING SOON to LITITZ Opening August 29!
By early April, Mease had raised $1,100 to purchase supplies, and he had created a design. He began spending one evening a week in a shop at Woodcrest building the stations. By early May, the four were completed, representing more than 60 hours of planning and preparation and another 70 hours of construction. Each station uses a series of interactive tiles to teach campers about nature. Each tile contains a photo. When a camper lifts the photo, information about the bird, insect, or tree is underneath. “I included basic information for each (bird, insect, and tree) and their habits and habitats, explained Mease. “The animal tracks (station is) a little different because I put a photo of the track on the front and the picture of the animal underneath. Mease pointed out that one of the animals represented at the station, the mountain lion, may not actually live in Pennsylvania because the presence of the big cats in the state continues to be a hotly debated topic. “We thought the (campers) would think that was fun, added Mease’s mother, Amy. “With our summer camp program, we strive to teach (about) creation and nature, noted Martin. “(The stations are) a fun way for campers to learn on their own as they pass these. Martin added that the stations, which were installed around the camp on June 14, are portable so that placements can be changed and to protect them in winter by storing them in a sheltered place. “This is quite the accomplishment, noted Martin. “Woodcrest is grateful for (Mease’s) investment in the children and adults who come (to Woodcrest). Mease, who lives in Stevens, is a recent homeschool graduate. Trail Life USA, which was founded in 2013, is chartered locally by Cornerstone Baptist Church. The organization provides a faith-based outdoor adventure program that includes character and leadership development components for boys in kindergarten through 12th grade. More information about Trail Life may be found at www.trailifeusa.com. Woodcrest is a nonprofit organization that provides outdoor experiences for more than 1,400 campers each summer. Readers who would like to learn more about Woodcrest may visit www.woodcrestretreat.org. The fall term of the Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning at Landis Homes began with a kickoff reception on July 24 at Calvary Church. More than 200 persons participated in the event, which also included celebrating the 10th anniversary of the program with teachers and students. The celebration included remarks from founders Lenora Stern, who helped start the original program at Messiah Lifeways in Mechanicsburg in 2006, and Connie Stauffer, who was instrumental in bringing the Lancaster program to Landis Homes in 2008. During the celebration, Stern and Stauffer were recognized for their work. Following the opening remarks, a new video featuring current participants and board members was shown for the first time. The video, “Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning: 10th Anniversary, is the creation of a father-andson team, Roger and David Godin, who con-

After the video was shown, the class instructors were introduced and the course titles were announced. The courses and events, which are scheduled to occur from September to December, are open to all Lancaster County residents, as well as residents from neighboring counties,
who are age 55 or above. Some of the new classes include Understanding the Opioid Crisis, Native American Spirituals, Trolleys of Lancaster County, Medicare 101, Four Masterpieces of 20th-Century Short Story, Products From the Hive, and Living Younger, Longer. The registration fee includes enrollment

Pathways Institute will also offer day trips, including a trip to the Museum of the American Revolution and an opportunity to see the eagles at Conowingo Dam, as well as special events. Most classes are held on the Landis Homes campus, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. For more information, readers may call 717-381-3577 or email pathwayinquiry@thepathwaysinstitute.org. age us to get away from the idea that we have the answers and we are just here to help someone by sending them money, he said. “I want us to look for ways we can learn from each other (because) we are on a journey together, and we should be praying for each other. To make the journeys of HOPE clients more real to golfers who participate in the tournaments, organizers have devised an activity to engage golfers on the links. “We will have client images with their names and businesses stationed on the course, said Bilindabagabo. “Each golfer will receive a card, and they fill in the card
as they go through the course with the name of the business, she explained. If the golfer completes the whole card correctly, he or she can be entered into a drawing for a prize. Bilindabagabo noted that much of the $350,000 HOPE would like to raise from the tournament will be donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. Packages start with two golfers and recognition during the awards meal and range to include a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic and golfing and a meal for 12 participants. A Sensenig reunion and genealogy research day is planned for Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Hahnstown Mennonite School, 255 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata. Sensenig (Sensenich, Senseny, Senseney, Sensiney) is a Swiss name found especially among the Mennonites of Lancaster County. Attendees will be able to view their Sensenig genealogy and update their family information starting at 10:30 a.m. Attendees should also bring a hot and cold dish if they plan to stay for the meal at noon. A donation will be accepted to cover expenses. The guest speaker, Mark Hostetter, will share about the “Beliefs and Practice of the Mennonite Immigrants.” There will be a committee meeting following the reunion for anyone who is interested in attending. Volunteers are welcome to help update their family’s genealogy. The committee has compiled information on the descendants of Jacob and Maria Krey Sensenig, who immigrated from Switzerland around 1717. The committee will not add births, deaths, and marriages that occur after Dec. 31, but organizers will continue to update events occurring prior to Dec. 31. The work will be offered on a computer disc for a fee. Plans to publish a Sensenig Encyclopedia are under discussion. Maps will be available to visit the Sensenig Farm Cemetery located off of White Oak Road. Anyone who thinks they may be a Sensenig descendent or wants to find out is encouraged to attend the reunion. For more information, readers may call Sally Shirk at 717-464-1614 or email imashirk@comcast.net with subject line: Sensenig Genealogy.

Seasons Band from pg 1 Celtic sounds and original music. Making music together has always come naturally for the five siblings of the Lee family who comprise the band. Between them, they play a number of instruments, including piano, harp, Celtic harp, hammered dulcimer, violin, concertina, mandolin, bodhrĂĄn, guitar, and pennywhistle. The band is known for engaging audiences with a mix of traditional Celtic
songs and original tunes. Mary-Kate, the eldest member, reports that inspiration for the group’s original selections comes from a variety of sources. “We are very inspired by history, legend, and experiences in our own lives, she recounted. “(We) tend to fuse these influences together. Sometimes a song might have an old feel or an old storyline, but the emotion behind the song connects with something very
personal. She noted that she and Peter often write the initial song and work with the other band members to develop the arrangement. She added that recently Mary-Grace has begun to compose original songs as well. In fact, Mary-Kate noted that Mary-Grace has written a song that has become a staple at Seasons concerts. “My sister wrote a new jig called ‘The Goat on the Roof,’ said MaryKate, adding that the song is based on MaryGrace seeing an actual goat standing on a cottage roof in Ireland. “We’ve been playing it at all our shows. Mary-Kate added that the concerts are filled with songs that make
it easy for the audience to join in. “The atmosphere at our concerts is definitely uplifting (and) energized, and we all tend to have fun onstage and bring a bit of humor to our stage banter, Mary-Kate relayed. “We like to form a connection with our audience and make the show very personal. The band has released a CD, “Songs From Seasons, that Mary-Kate stated is selling well, but she added that the group is anxious to make a new album. In addition, a recently recorded track will be included on a Celtic compilation CD, which will benefit Four Diamonds. Along with the
