camp. “ We need to raise $100,000 each year to cover our camp budget, explained Woodcrest director Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournaments in hopes of reaching that goal. Woodcrest, which is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps, along with a Conquerors special needs camp. More than 1,400 youngsters attended camp at Woodcrest this year. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together. “I have been impressed by how many people brought their sons and daughters, noted Martin. Those who wish to take part in the hunt are encouraged to register by Monday, Aug. 20, by calling 717-738-2233 or visiting www.WoodcrestRetreat.org/ Events/Benefit-3D-Archery-Shoot.

DAY AT THE BUCK”

On Friday, Aug. 24, Ephrata National Bank (ENB) will celebrate its 10th year as a part of the Manheim community. ENB expanded its branch network in the fall of 2008 by opening the Manheim office, located at the intersection of Doe Run and Penryn roads. The opening was a part of the bank’s growth strategy to expand into new communities. Leading the office is Craig Dietrich, a Manheim resident with strong ties to the community. Passionate about the community in which he works and resides, Dietrich has been involved in several Manheim community-based organizations, including the Manheim Rotary Club, for which he has served on the board and audit committee, and the Manheim Touchdown Club. He is also the head coach for the Manheim Central boys’ volleyball team.

At ENB’s Manheim branch, Dietrich leads a staff of eight. Through his leadership, the branch staff has been involved in many of Manheim’s traditions and events over the years, including the annual Manheim Farm Show Parade, business expos and the former Manheim Downtown Development Group’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration. Ephrata National Bank plans to host its 10-year anniversary celebration on Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The celebration is open to customers, neighbors and local businesses and is intended to serve as a small token of appreciation to the community that has welcomed and embraced the bank over the years. There is no cost, and registration is not required. Festivities will include a free lunch catered by The Cat’s Meow, as well as activities for children,

including face painting and a bounce house. “We are looking forward to letting the community know how much we’ve appreciated their support over the years,” Dietrich noted. “I’m looking forward to many more years of serving this community.” Customers and interested members of the public are invited to stop in at the Manheim office, 1 N. Penryn Road, for more details. The bank can also be reached at 717-665-0266, with more information also available at www.epnb.com. Lobby hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The Lititz American Legion Riders from Post 56 will hold their 13th annual VA Hospice Ride on Sunday, Aug. 19. Registration will start at 10 a.m., and the ride will begin at noon. The scenic, guided ride will start at the Lititz American Legion on Broad Street; travel to New Holland American Legion, Morgantown American Legion, and Richland American Legion; and end back at Lititz American Legion, where refreshments will be available. Separate fees have been set for riders and for passengers. The ride will be held in memory of David Little, a life member of the Lititz American Legion and the service officer before he passed away earlier this year.

Little was a chief warrant officer, retiring from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. A decorated veteran, he served two tours in Vietnam, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantry Badge, and other honors. As a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, Little was shot down twice while spraying Agent Orange, intensifying his exposure to the chemical. Little required 114 blood transfusions in one year. He was admitted to the hospice unit of the Lebanon VA Hospital in February 2018 and died on March 9. In addition to the Lititz American Legion, Little had also been a member of the Columbia

FS25K Class from pg 1 will be awarded to the top three runners in several age categories. Refreshments will be served following the run/walk. Area runners are encouraged to gather coworkers, friends, family, and other groups to form teams to participate for the best group time. This year’s race will have a new course. Magni said that although the training program has already begun, area residents who wish to take the class and complete the Pretzel Twist may still register. “(The class) is for anybody,” said Magni, who noted that those who have never run before as well as former intermediate runners who are returning to running are welcome. The class, which meets in the lobby of the rec center each Saturday at 9 a.m. through Sept. 15, begins with a short presentation by Magni on a relevant topic. “We have talked about how to

buy running shoes or what to eat before a race,” explained Magni, who said she will focus on subjects related to running that are not specifically about training. Following the presentation, the group does some warm-up exercises with an emphasis on stretching, followed by running. “Each week we add a little (distance) to the running (segment),” said Magni, who relayed that on the second week, the group walked and ran about 1.5 miles. “Some walk, (and) some do a (combination) walk, run, and jog,” she explained. “(When we work) together as a group … it’s nice to see other people out there and to have someone on your level to run with.” Magni has also given class members homework assignments to help them prepare. She said that the running program homework varies. “There are programs for people just coming off

Hands-on House from pg 1 Half Marathon, which also offers 10K and 5K courses, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 8 a.m. All three runs will begin and end at Hands-on House, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The 10K utilizes part of the halfmarathon course, and the 5K winds through a local neighborhood. Strollers are permitted in the 5 and 10K runs, but pets are not allowed for safety reasons. Connolly noted that water stops and comfort stations will be available along the routes and that bagels and apples will be offered to runners at the end of the race. Each run will have its own start, and all runners will be chip-timed. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female half-marathon runners, and all half-marathoners will receive medals. Prizes will also be given to the top three males and females in a number of age groups for the half marathon and to the top five males and females for the 5K and 10K courses.

According to Connolly, race organizers have set a goal of attracting 800 to 1,000 participants this year. At its peak, more than 1,000 runners took part in the event. Registration opened earlier this year to give more runners a chance to sign up. Runners may register at www.handsonhouse.org/run/ or by searching for “Hands-on House Half Marathon, 10K & 5K 2018” at www.active.com. Half-marathon runners must register prior to race day, and online registration will end on Thursday, Sept. 27. Those wishing to participate in the 5K or 10K races may register ahead of time or on the day of the event beginning at 6:30 a.m. Packet pickup will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Hands-on House and from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the race. Free long-sleeved tech shirts are guaranteed for runners who preregister for the events. While the Hands-on House race courses spotlight the

According to Magni, the 5K distance of 3.1 miles is one that most runners can prepare to run/walk in eight weeks. “It’s giving them an end goal,” she said. The Kids Mile Marathon, which is open to children ages 3 to 12, will also be completed at the event. “Over the course of the summer, (participating children) track 25 miles, and on the last day, they run 1.2 miles,” explained Magni. The Kids Mile Marathon will take place at the Lititz recCenter on Sept. 22 at 8:30 a.m. There is a fee to take part in the class. The fee includes Pretzel Twist registration and a special post-race celebration for class members. hallmarks of Lancaster County scenery, the event also offers a unique opportunity for children and non-runners to enjoy the museum during the race. “The museum will open at 8 a.m., and runners receive coupons for children,” said Connolly, who explained that children may enjoy the museum for free with a paying adult. The coupons give a spouse, grandparent, or family friend a chance to enjoy the museum with a child or children while one or both parents run the course. Funds raised by the races will benefit educational programming and exhibits of Hands-on House, a museum for children that first opened in 1987 in a Victorian house located across the street from its present location. In February of 2000, the museum moved to 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and just about doubled its floor space. Hands-on House is a nonprofit organization that exists to use play to create landmark experiences for children ages 2 to 10. Historical Society Plans Exhibit “Voices of Conscience: Peace Witness in the Great War” is a traveling exhibit that remembers the stories of people of faith who opposed the war. The exhibit examines key questions such as: “Who speaks for peace in times of war?”; “What am I willing to fight for?”; “Is paying for war participating in war?”; and “Who are the voices of conscience today?” The exhibit will be held in the Crossings Meeting Room at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The entrance is via the main entrance of the new Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center at Landis Homes. The display is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 19, through Wednesday, Sept. 26, and will be open daily from 2 to 7 p.m., with other hours by appointment. An opening reception will take place at 2 p.m. on Aug. 19. A century ago, the United States had just entered “The Great War.” While many endorsed the effort, there were persons who could not in good conscience be involved in the killing of other humans. Often at great cost, even including death in a few cases, they spoke through their words and actions of a different path. A series of educational meetings will be held alongside the exhibit, focusing on conscientious objection to war. “Voices of Conscience: The Witness of Conscientious Objectors in WWI” will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, at Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale

Families for Children, they became dedicated to the cause. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. The program has been shown to be much less costly than utilizing the foster care system, and in most cases, the children are returned to their family. Mark Unger, BCS regional director, said that BCS offers two programs to help children in crisis in Lancaster County. “One is a prevention program to prevent children from having to go into foster care, and the other is Safe Families,” said Unger. McCauley noted that he and other members of the Bible study, including Dixon Miller, Allen Lafferty, Rob Lukowski, and Will Charles, are committed to the cause of Safe Families. “It’s about keeping the families

people doing this,” noted McCauley. Other contests will include cumulative par 3 greenies, closest to the pin, longest drive, and a putting contest, among others. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are available. Interested individuals may register at www.bethany.org/Lancaster/ Events. The resulting golf tournament, named the Bethany Charity Golf Classic, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Laurel Dance Company, 514 E. Main St., Ephrata, will present a weekend of dancing for dancers of all ages. No experience is necessary, and inexperienced dancers are encouraged to attend. On Friday, Aug. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. an evening of international dance steps will be held. On Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the event will feature a variety of classes to try and explore. Friday’s dance explorations will showcase dances from Ireland, Polynesia, and Latin America. Elementary dancers will have the opportunity to learn elementary Irish dancing from 6 to 8 p.m. and Polynesian dancing from 7 to 8 p.m. Adolescents and adults will have two offerings as well, with Polynesian dance from 6 to 7 p.m. and salsa dancing from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday’s Focus on Fundamentals day will begin with a seminar on preventing dance injuries and how to care for an injury, if one should occur. This informative session is great for both dancers and parents. Following the presentation, four classes will be available. Teens and adults can learn about auditioning from 10 to 11 a.m., and a “Try It class will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., which consists of 30 minutes each of tap, ballet, and musical theater.
