Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted

Ames. “It used to be called the Dream Ride.” Ames added that the sponsoring organizations of the event have changed over the past two decades since the ride was first held. Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter, founders of Leo’s Helping Paws, set a specific goal when they created the organization more than four years ago to support dog rescue groups by providing grants. “We knew in order to save dogs, you needed funding (because) vet bills are a major part of a rescue,” said Styer. “We knew we needed to fundraise, so we founded a team.” “We wanted to help all rescues,” Buchter added, noting that rescue organizations that are eligible for grants from Leo’s must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with no paid staff. “We started with (rescues located in) Pennsylvania, but we have added bordering states including New York, New Jersey, Delaware, See Paws In The Park pg 7

Leo, the rescued corgi that is the namesake of Leo’s Helping Paws, is looking forward to attending Paws in the Park, a dog-centered fundraiser for the organization that will be held in Lititz Springs Park on Sept. 29. The event will feature games, food, and vendors that create items or provide services for dogs.

Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association (LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are

“It’s a huge event, and it’s a lot of fun.” That is how organizer Kris Gray succinctly described God’s Clothing Closet, an annual clothing giveaway held at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, held just in time for the dawning of a new school year. “We have people who come because they want something new and some people who are in desperate need of something,” shared Gray. The community is invited to shop for free quality used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children in all sizes and for all seasons at this year’s event on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 8 to 11 a.m. Clothing is organized by size and displayed on clothing racks or tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, and it has

The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,” said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help with administrative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required, as training will be provided. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,” explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who

were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works full-time as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,” shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,” Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,” Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.” To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

of shoppers before we opened the doors stretched to the Prayer Garden, and some of those shoppers arrived before 5:30 a.m.,” recounted Gray. “Several shoppers who attend every year took the time to stop and thank us for this needed ministry and how it personally blessed them.” In addition to giving away clothing, approximately 220 Bibles and 37 handmade comforters were distributed to guests at the 2017 event. Five large boxes of nonperishable food donated by shoppers were given to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Any items left over at the event’s end will be donated to Community Aid. Collecting clothing, shoes, and accessories for the next God’s Clothing Closet is a yearlong process, and donations of quality used items are welcome at any time. struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service. “Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,” Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment” at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed.

The organization promotes healing and abundant life through Jesus Christ. Millersville University and the school’s Cy Fritz Foundation, which supports Millersville University’s crosscountry and track and field programs, are also sponsors. There is a minimum fee for cyclists and walkers to register for the ride, but participants may also fundraise for a chosen organization. “A lot of people collect sponsorships, and they ask for so much per mile, explained Ames. She added that many of those riders then combine routes, so that they can collect a per-mile amount for up to 60 miles. According to Ames, the organization wants to encourage those who cannot be present for the ride to complete it on their own by signing up at www.nlam.org. Ames added that NLAM hopes to raise $15,000 for its general budget from the ride. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries, said that her goal

is for 10 area residents to participate with the organization to raise $5,000 for Faith Friendship Ministries, and she added that those who cannot participate themselves may sponsor residents of Faith Friendship who have committed to walk in the event. “We are looking for people in the community to sponsor one of our residents,â€? she said. “We have people who love to walk, but they don’t have connections in the community (to gather sponsors), so if someone would like to sponsor one of them, they can do so.â€? Those who would like to register through Faith Friendship may visit www.faithfriendship.org. Participant Jonathan Shenk said that he first got involved in NLAM after hearing a presentation at West End Mennonite Fellowship. “I found their mission compelling and decided to begin supporting the organization,â€? said Shenk, who discussed his interest in cycling with an NLAM representative. “One thing led to another, and I ended up riding in the event last year and ‌ contributing some ideas for growing the event in coming years.â€?

Art and Craft Show, ensuring that each of the artists makes his or her own work is crucial. Each applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Fortyfive of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She creates designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves original baskets using ancient techniques without using nails, glue, or staples and is well known for incorporating unusual items into her baskets. Grebinger, who was born and raised in Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons - many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At the information booth, folks may enter to win drawings for gift cards. Winners will be announced every hour. “I love the show. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go,” remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me.” Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us,” Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it.” Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. For more information about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show, readers may visit www.hlcshow.com.

Those offering services will include veterinary offices, dog boarders, and pet sitters. A silent auction will feature up to 25 items, including unique artisan-type creations such as original artwork and a glass lamp. Gift cards, gift baskets, and purses will also go up for bids. Food trucks that will be on-site at the park will offer barbecue, hamburgers, chicken fingers, french fries, and hot dogs for purchase. Organizers hope to offer vegetarian options as well. According to Styer, Leo’s Helping Paws has given more than $255,000 in grants to more than 100 rescue organizations. “A typical adoption fee could be between $200 and $350, said Styer. “But sometimes a dog will require more than $1,000 of vet care. The adoption fee never covers all that. Buchter added that grants from Leo’s can be crucial to rescues. “A large vet bill can put a rescue under, she noted. There is a cost to attend Paws in the Park, and those wishing to attend are encouraged to register at http://leos helpingpaws.org/ by Saturday, Sept. 1. According to Krista Jenkins, who is organizing the 2018 contest, costumes vary from homemade to storebought. Games will include musical hoops, a version of musical chairs where dogs sit in hoops when the music stops. Other games will include a dog treat relay, a shell game, and a tennis ball retrieve.

The Overlook Ladies’ Golf Association (OLGA) will hold its 13th annual “Success Is Sweet” charity invitational golf tournament at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Monday, Sept. 10. The event will benefit Milagro House. Women golfers are invited to gather for a day of golf and prizes. Registration will start at 6:45 a.m., and the four-person scramble event will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Golfers need a USGA established handicap at a regulation 18-hole course. For a donation, golfers will receive an omelet breakfast. A luncheon will be held at the barn following the tournament. The tournament awards will be gift certificates to be used in the pro shop. Prizes will be given through drawings, as well as for closest to the pin, longest drive, straightest drive, and the first hole-in-one on all par 3’s. There will also be team prizes, and mulligans will be for sale. Prizes for giveaway drawings and auction items have been donated by local businesses. Milagro House provides a clean, safe place for homeless mothers and children to live, long term, until they are fully prepared to become, and remain, self-sufficient. The organization also focuses on education and training, and it offers parenting and life skills workshops, as well as individualized psychological counseling and case management designed to promote personal change as well as lasting self-sufficiency. Participants of the golf tournament are encouraged to bring any of the following donations to the event: paper towels, disposable diapers (sizes 4, 5, 6), household cleaners, feminine products, garbage bags (tall kitchen or 30 gallon), antibacterial hand soap, and toilet paper. The event has donated more than $60,000 to Milagro House, along with countless numbers of donated items. There is a per-player fee, and golfers may sign up as individuals or as part of a team. The golf field is limited to the first 136 paid players. Those who are interested in participating and have a USGA handicap may email Debby Pegg at olgateetogreen@gmail.com or dlpegg@ptd.net.
