Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, is keenly aware of the worldwide impact of COVID-19. HOPE International is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms - spiritual, material, social, and personal. Over its more than 20-year history, the organization, with offices at 227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250, Lancaster, has done that by loaning out more than $1 billion and helping to start savings groups among about a million clients in 16 countries. Now, those clients, who Rutt said are already on “fragile footing,” have been teetering on the brink. See HOPE International pg 4

The Lititz Chocolate Walk, which was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, has been canceled due to ongoing concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Next year’s walk is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021. Through the support of the community, the club has raised more than $800,000 in the past 25 years to help support local children. especially for those who do not need anything in particular. Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities, she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important. COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also encouraged the changes in how the fair will be held this year. “We decided to keep it virtual, said Knepper, who added that the organization will be spotlighting 30 nonprofit organizations that have taken part in the fair previously. “The sponsors that would normally have been our supporters are going through a tough time, so we are trying to have minimal overhead costs, she explained. “We have been trying to pull them off that proverbial cliff edge,” said Rutt. “We have gotten some results.” HOPE has instituted a three-phase plan called Rebuilding Dreams, which first provided food and water to clients who needed it to survive. The second phase involved a 60day interest payment holiday. That crucial step cost HOPE about $500,000 a month, for a total expenditure of $1 million. The final phase, which focuses on recapitalization of the tiny client businesses, will include at least $2 million more from HOPE. “These client businesses are starting to reopen, but they need capital to do that,” explained Rutt. To help raise that capital, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its 20th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 18, beginning at 6:30 a.m. A second round will be held the same day at 1 p.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon. The fundraising goal for this year’s tournament is $500,000. More information about the tournaments may be found by clicking on “Take Action” and then “Attend an Event” at www.hopeinternational.org. Rutt has been impressed by the resilience of some of HOPE’s clients. “Irene in Paraguay got a small loan to start a hair salon,” he said, noting that countries like Paraguay do not offer stimulus packages. According to Rutt, Irene quickly reorganized to sewing face masks and selling them to the families in her community. “Irene provided a product (her neighbors) need and an income for her family,” said Rutt. “I thought that was a good example of pivoting to something she could do.” Rutt also told the story of Corine, a savings group member in Zimbabwe. He reported that Corine said, “When we saw that our savings group was suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we quickly put our heads together and decided to start a bakery. Our plan was that it would enable us to continue to save, but now it has exceeded our expectations by allowing us to use the income to (care for) our families.” Rutt pointed out the differences between facing the pandemic in the United States and in other parts of the world. “We are the aircraft carrier, but our clients in Burundi and Malawi and Rwanda are the life rafts

HOPE clients were prepared to face the financial hardships of the pandemic. “Pre-COVID, there was a study done by an independent third-party organization in Malawi, where we work,” said Rutt, who noted that the study focused on how many families in that country would have the funds they needed to survive three weeks in an emergency. That amount was around $19. “(The study found that) 37% of the population in general had the ability to survive,” said Rutt. However, when the researchers surveyed HOPE savings group members, they found that 81% had the means to survive. “It shows the difference that our savings groups are making,” said Rutt. psychiatrist. Prior to the pandemic, eligibility was limited to persons with financial need who are birth to age 25 or the parent of a dependent child ages 0 to 25 and live in the county. This is now expanded to include any county resident impacted financially by COVID-19, regardless of age or parental status. The LOHF Mental Health Copay Assistance program complements MHALC’s bundle of free services to the community during COVID-19. MHALC’s other services in the bundle are community mental health assistance, medication assistance, and virtual mental health support groups. Community mental health assistance offers services for residents in Lancaster County who do not currently have access to an employee assistance program or for those whose employment was affected by COVID-19. This free program includes an assessment, short-term counseling by a licensed mental health professional, and follow up resources. This program is supported by a grant from the Steinman Foundation. Medication assistance provides financial assistance for adults and children in Lancaster County who are unable to afford medication during the pandemic, with limited restrictions. This program is supported by a grant from Lancaster Cares. Virtual mental health support groups are peer-led groups that meet weekly by Zoom or phone for support, education, and mentoring. The groups are free, confidential, and ongoing. For more information or to apply online for mental health services, readers may visit www.lohf.org/copay.

Practicing “Resilience” rest and then reform into some other shape together.” High points will include a woodwind feature at the beginning of “Sound of Silence,” which will also spotlight the color guard. This year’s band has seven color guard members working with both flags and rifles. To offer the students a safe environment, drumline section leader Emma Graybill said that students only remove their masks when they are a safe distance from each other or to play their instruments. Wind section leader Vivian Clemmer added that temperatures are checked before practice starts and that students who register above a certain threshold are sent home. Students are also queried about virus symptoms. Scott reported that special protective coverings have also been ordered for wind instruments to further enhance safety. Anna Cancilla, mellophone section leader, said that to keep camp fun, members have focused on simple things. Some band members have volunteered

to talk about their experiences to help encourage others. As in the past, theme days that pay homage to clothing from different decades or ask students to dress in the purple and gold school colors have been held. Although the group has dealt with a number of changes, including the cancellation of their own annual fall band showcase, Scott said that the students are happy to be back together. “There’s a lot about band camp that is different,” she shared. “But Monday was the first time we played as a whole ensemble all summer, and it was very exciting.” Clemmer agreed. “It was nice to have some normalcy,” she said. Additional student leaders are band president Freddy Arnold, wind section leader Isabella Folts, drumline section leader Alex Lopez, front ensemble section leader Lizbeth Stephan, color guard captain Katie Lyle, and sanitation coordinator Christopher Johnson.

When the 48 members of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band gathered at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, in mid-August to start practicing the fall drill, they knew camp would be a little different. “The world is different, and we are changing with the world,” said Jacob Fertal, vice president of the band, referring to the pandemic and the restrictions associated with COVID-19. The band members met from Aug. 10 to 13 to begin learning the drill to a program titled “Resilience.” Practices were also held Aug. 18 to 20 and Aug. 25 to 27. “Resilience” will be performed in three parts, beginning with “We Are Family,” moving into the ballad, which is “The Sound of Silence,” and finishing with “Daft Punk Medley.” Fertal explained how each segment of the show relates to the theme. “With everything that is going on in the world, we think a lot of resilience

is needed,” he said, noting that “We Are Family” focuses on staying together to get through hard times and that “Sound of Silence” talks about being strong enough to work out your problems. “‘Daft Punk Medley’ (includes) the words ‘harder, better, faster, and stronger’ (because) after you get through your struggles, you’re better than you were before.” Band director Paul Murr said that he and assistant director Daniel List chose the music for the drill with the uncertainty of fall in mind. “When school was shut down in March, we started thinking about how it would affect summer and fall,” he said, noting that “Resilience” was picked from about seven different ideas because it would be easier to learn and allowed for social distancing. Student director Sarah Scott noted that the drill utilizes curves and interconnecting circles and other shapes. “We move around each other and connect at different points,” she said. “A part of the band will break off from the

Online Plans Available For PennDOT Project The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 1026 (Hopeland Road) bridge replacement project. This project is located over Furnace Run in Elizabeth Township, roughly 1 mile from the intersection with Route 322. The purpose of this project is to address structural deficiencies of the bridge and provide continued safe and efficient crossing of Hopeland Road over Furnace Run. The project consists of replacment of the 70-year-old two-span concrete slab bridge with a precast concrete box culvert, approach pavement replacement, rock scour protection, and guiderail updates. The bridge width will be very close to the existing width and will include two 11-foot lanes and 2-foot shoulders. The bridge will be closed for approximately two months to all traffic during the construction. The proposed detour route will use Route 322 to Yummerdall Road. The project is currently in design, and construction work is anticipated to take place in the 2021 construction season. The plans display will be held online only and will introduce the project and offer an opportunity for public input regarding the project.. A digital version of the information will be available to view online until Sunday, Sept. 20. Information, including roadway and bridge plans and an interactive comment form, can be found by visiting www.penndot.gov/District8, clicking on Public Meetings listed under the Resources heading, and choosing the Lancaster County box then the tile marked Hopeland Road Over Furnace Run. The project documents can be made available in alternative languages or formats if requested. Those who need translation/interpretation services or have special needs or have special concerns that require individual attention may contact Christopher McKee, PennDOT project manager, at chmckee@pa.gov or 717-705-6179.
