WHS Marchers Explore “The Fire Within” By Ann Mead Ash

The Warwick High School (WHS) marching band did not shrink from tackling weighty issues in this year’s fall band drill. “It’s called ‘The Fire Within,’” said band director Matthew Tenaglia, who added that the show is based on composer Igor Stravinsky’s “The Firebird” and that music from that ballet will be used in the finale. “It will depict … our resilience to overcome the struggle (against) what is inside ourselves.” WHS held band camp weekdays from Aug. 5 through Aug. 23, meeting from 2 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to noon each Friday. The 75-member band, which includes 15 color guards, will compete in the Liberty Division of Cavalcade of Bands, with plans to attend shows at Hempfield High School on Saturday, See WHS Marching Band pg 2

When a downpour interrupted the Warwick High School marching band camp practice on Aug. 7, members moved inside to rehearse in the band room, the auditorium, and one of the large entrance halls. The group will present its 2019 show, titled “The Fire Within,” at football games and competitions during the autumn months.

18th Annual Rothsville Day Planned LBC To Stage “Tradition!” By Ann Mead Ash

Terry Marxen, one of the organizers of Rothsville Community Day, is grateful to all the area residents and businesses that participate in the annual event. “This is all made possible through the work of many volunteers from the various churches in the area,” said Marxen, “but it would also not be possible without the local businesses who support us

financially and allow us to bring in this level of entertainment.” The 18th annual Rothsville Community Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Forney Field on Church Street in Rothsville. This year’s 5K Fun Run/Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration at Forney Field on the day of the event will open at 9 a.m. The 5K is sponsored by WellSpan Family and Pediatric Medicine in Rothsville, and it raises funds for WellSpan’s Prescription for Caring to help people who cannot afford necessary medications. Free events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. include a bounce castle, barrel train rides, and games. Two of the games sponsored by the St. Paul’s See Rothsville Day pg 4

Character juggler Chris Ivey will entertain audiences at the 18th annual Rothsville Community Day, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Forney Field on Church Street in Rothsville. The event will include games, food, and demonstrations.

In Honor Of Past Musicals By Ann Mead Ash

When Dave Felty, head of the musical theater program at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), realized that this fall would mark the 10th year since the music, worship, and performing arts

division of the college began to produce musicals, he knew he had to plan a fall show that would honor the accomplishment. “This felt like a great time to celebrate a little bit of every show we have done,” shared Felty. “We won’t hit every show, but we will hit most of them.” See “Tradition!” pg 7

Lancaster Bible College (LBC) students will celebrate 10 years of musical productions when the school stages “Tradition!” in a dinner theater format on Sept. 27 and 28. The show will feature music from past LBC shows, including “Mary Poppins” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”

WHS will hold its own show on Saturday, Sept. 28. The show opens with an original piece of music by Lancaster composer Gary Gilroy, who is director of bands at Fresno State University in California. Tenaglia explained that he became acquainted with Gilroy through a local relative and that the entire show was arranged by the world-renowned composer and will be premiered on the field by the WHS band. The middle segment of the show will utilize Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” to depict the sadness that can follow an experience of adversity. The emotions of anger and frustration will be captured in a feature by the WHS pit and drumline. The show will conclude with music from “The Firebird.” “Every day, we are faced with adversity as human beings,” said Tenaglia. “This show is about trying to capture the emotions of day-to-day life and find that spark that drives you. ‘The Firebird’ is a beautiful uplifting piece of music to finish the show with.” The drill for the show was written by Scott Goebel. “The drill will be very modern and move to more traditional movements,” said Tenaglia, who added that the band will not use props on the field, but that visual components will include choreographed moments and soloists playing mellophone, trumpet, and baritone. Tenaglia also noted that the drum break will be heavily

from pg 1

choreographed, giving all the band members a chance to learn some dance moves. Color guard co-captain Lauren Brummer, drum major Aaron Dickinson, and woodwind captain Sarah Beatty said that band members were rising to the challenges of the drill. “The first movement keeps coming at you with movement, sound, and difficulty,” said Dickinson. Beatty agreed, noting, “The tempo is fast and that makes it harder for moving.” Brummer noted that the show has a number of high and low points and that the band members are working to master moving from one to the other. Band camp is noted for building camaraderie among members. “I am excited about the whole community working together while having a fun time,” said Dickinson of the experience. Beatty agreed, noting, “It’s fun getting to know new people and welcoming them into our pre-established family.” Brummer was excited to pass along what she has learned to others. “It’s very exciting to teach a skill that you know to other people,” she said. The students are also looking forward to sharing the fall drill at football games and competitions. “We really want to put people on the edge of their seats this year,” said Brummer. Beatty added that she wants audience members to feel the emotions associated with the chaos and then the strength of the fire rising up to persevere. Dickinson also said that he hopes the students hard work will pay off when the group performs. “We want audiences to remember the power and music behind the drill,” he said. “There’s a lot of intensity, and I hope they will feel that.”

technical juggling with a theatrical flair. He won a Gold Medal at the 2002 World Juggling Championships, and he has appeared on numerous television programs. He has performed at corporations’ events, theaters, schools, and other venues. “We will have Kay Moyer back with us from Penn State Extension,” said Marxen. “Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them. “We try very hard to focus on local artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing

some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” “We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s affordable,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners

will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener. “We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17 with the opportunity to fix up and keep a bicycle that they can call their own and receive training in bicycle assembly, maintenance, and safety. According to https://thecommonwheel.com, the organization also gifted bicycles to 375 children through its Holiday Bike Drive. Its Bikes For All program, which supplies low income individuals with reliable transportation via a bicycle, has had 58

Renaissance Faire Supports Community Groups The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, hosted its annual Red Cross blood drive on Aug. 10 and 11. This year’s drive exceeded the goal to collect 148 units by collecting 198 donations. These donations will be able to help 594 people in need of blood. Each guest who donated at the drive received a complimentary ticket to the 2019 Renaissance Faire season. More than 3,400 units of blood have been collected at past Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire blood drives. The next weekend, Aug. 17 and 18, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire welcomed beneficiaries of nonprofit organizations to the festivities with free admission. Approved beneficiaries included 501(c)(3) religious, educational, or charitable organizations. The organization applied through the Renaissance Faire’s website for the complimentary admission and were reviewed and approved based on financial need. The Renaissance Faire has distributed more than 6,500 tickets for the 2019 Community Outreach Program. On the same weekend, beneficiaries of local libraries also enjoyed free admission through the Renaissance Faire’s annual Library Program. Young readers earned a free ticket by completing the task set by

their local library. The Renaissance Faire provided 3,000 tickets to the libraries. On Saturday, Aug. 31; Sunday, Sept. 1; and Monday, Sept. 2, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will offer a discounted admission price to active and retired members of the military and those who serve as police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel, as well as members of veteran organizations, and their immediate family members, with a valid service identification. The Renaissance Faire will also honor six heroes in each day’s Finale In Song’s Royal Honor Ceremony. The honorees were selected through an earlier nomination process. PUBLIC AUCTION • MULTI-BUSINESS INVESTMENT REAL ESTATE OPPORTUNITY • • TURN-KEY BUSINESS! • GREAT INCOME PRODUCING PROPERTY •

To mark the milestone, Felty has planned “Tradition!” The dinner and concert format production will feature 18 students from the worship, music, and performing arts track. Shows will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, with dinner at 6 p.m. and a concert at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28, with a meal at noon and concert at 1:30 p.m. A concert will also be held on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend may purchase dinner and concert tickets for Friday evening or Saturday at noon or just concert tickets for each performance. The 90-minute show, which will be directed by Heather Grayberg, will feature a band on the stage and a cast dressed in elegant evening wear. Felty said that the 2008-09 school year was when LBC staged “Little Women,” a show he plans to revisit during the concert. “There is some beautiful music in ‘Little Women,’” Felty said. “We will do a lot of songs from that show.” The late Stan Deen directed a number of shows for LBC early on, including “Singin’ in the Rain.” “We will try to do some dance numbers from ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ which will be fun,” said Felty. Felty listed “The Sound of Music” and “The Pirates of Penzance” among the early shows that were staged at the school. “We are doing ‘(I Am the Very Model of a) Modern Major General’ (from ‘Pirates’),” noted Felty. When Felty joined the faculty at LBC, the musical theater program was really just getting started. “My first year was 2013-14,” recalled Felty. “We had three musical theater majors.” The small number did not keep Felty from staging “Seussical” at the school that winter. “Godspell” is a show that Felty said brought a lot of positive feedback to the school when it was performed. “‘Godspell’ was a huge success,” Felty noted, adding that he plans to do several songs from the show, along with a few from “Fiddler on the Roof,” from which the concert takes its name. Felty said he plans to draw from “The Sound of Music,” “Mary Poppins,” and “The Music Man,” among other shows that have been featured at the school. “This will be music that people will recognize for the most part,” he noted. Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/ events. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.
