WHS Prepares “Magical Mystery Tour” A Letter From
The Publisher
By Ann Mead Ash
Normally, Warwick High School (WHS) band director Matthew Tenaglia brings marching band members together at the end of May to start learning marching basics in preparation for band camp later in the summer. This year was not normal. With students at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Tenaglia began having online meetings on Tuesday evenings in June and July to talk about marching, music, and the fall drill. When the planned drill was discarded, Tenaglia asked the more than 80 band members for suggestions. “They voted on the show they wanted to do,” recalled Tenaglia, who reported that “Magical Mystery Tour - The See WHS pg 6

As a runner, Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community, knows how 5Ks have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. While many organized runs have been converted to virtual events, many participants, Link included, miss running in person.
So, when Link had the chance to offer input for the annual Friendship Community 5K Run/Walk, she liked the idea of offering options. “We decided to focus on the 5K and have it be both virtual and in-person,” said Link. “Anyone who wants to support us but is feeling hesitant about being in groups of people, we understand and appreciate that.” For those runners, the 5K offers See 5K Run/Walk pg 3

a virtual participation opportunity, which includes the same goodie bag, but can be done at home at the runner’s leisure. For runners who want to join others in a 5K, the event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, with check-in and registration prior to the race beginning at 7 a.m. The run/walk race will start at 8 a.m., and awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m. “(We’re hoping) it won’t be humid in the morning, and it will be great (September) weather,” noted Link. The run will be a professionally timed race on a safe off-road course, which loops through Landis Homes and finishes back at the starting line. Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved. Link hopes the event will appeal to those who have missed running in traditional 5Ks. “We are trying to expand our horizons by connecting with folks
who haven’t heard of us before to do some sort of in-person run because theirs was canceled,” she said. “It will look a little different, but we want to offer that race experience.” Organizers will station people on the course to provide cheers and encouragement to create the exciting race opportunity many runners have been missing. “Part of the fun of running is starting at the line … hearing the gun go off … we want to pay respect to those people who haven’t had any (live) race opportunities,” said Link, who added that because the event is a run/walk, those wishing to take things more slowly are welcome too. “Come and have fun and walk three miles,” she said. “We’re excited for this.” “We have monetary prizes for the winners of the in-person race,” reported Link. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners, and medals will be awarded to the top three runners in eight age groups. The 2019 race first-place overall finishers were Merlin

As much as $15 billion in property damage left 300,000 homeless. When the explosion happened, Drew was on the phone with Charbel, a ministry partner he had met when he was in Beirut in March. “(Charbel) was scared for his family,” recalled Drew, who said that once Charbel found his family and knew they were safe, he turned to another mission. “He decided to go to where the explosion happened to help people,” said Drew. “That is where he has been daily.” According to Drew, Charbel has formed a team that takes shovels and brooms daily and asks where they can help clean up the disaster area. “They go from home to home or from apartment to apartment cleaning and ministering,” said Drew. “What I find fascinating is that no longer are people (in Beirut) asking, ‘Are you a Muslim or a Christian or a Jew?’ They are just asking, ‘How can we help?’” Keeping in touch with Charbel by phone each day, Drew is seeing how the team is reaching out. “From tragedy, there is an open door for Christians to go and love people because they are in desperate need of help right now,” he said. “I am incredibly thankful that we have people there working and that there’s opportunity to make a dif-

In the last several years, the ministry has expanded to add partners in Chicago, Honduras, Belize, and more locations. “The Lord … says go to all nations and make disciples,” said Drew. “The work became less dependent on Drew and Cindy to do the healing work with the children (and) more about us training others.” “We were helping train nationals to be excellent at working with children,” said Drew, who was in Beirut from March 1 through 7 at the invitation of the Lebanon Bible Society for an intense training session with children’s trauma workers from around the region. The workshops in play and art therapy ran eight hours daily for four days. On his flight back to Guatemala, which took him by way of England and Texas, Drew became concerned that countries were shutting down. “Even within a country, travel shut down,” he recalled, noting that his

Music of the Beatles was the No. 1 choice, followed by “Star Wars and “The ’90s Boy Band Show. When students began meeting at the field behind the school four days per week during the first three full weeks of August, a drill written by Scott Goebel had been prepared to accompany a number of Beatles tunes. The show will open with “The Magical Mystery Tour Opener, which includes some portions of “Penny Lane. The ballad will combine “Blackbird and “Yesterday, followed by “Eleanor Rigby. The show will close with “I Saw Her Standing There. At this point, Tenaglia expects the marchers will perform the drill at home games. They will also take part in Cavalcade of Bands virtual adjudications. “We will be able to submit a video and get feedback to replace what would have been (live competitions), said Tenaglia. “ We are constantly seeking performance experiences for our students. Several students will be spotlighted in the show. The 13 members of the color guard will have a feature at the beginning of the performance. Ethan Darling and Jett Lauer will have trumpet solos in “Magical Mystery Opener and “Blackbird, respectively. Seniors Noah Evans and Adam Ciampaglia will be featured on saxophone in the opener, and Kerri Hahn will also have a mellophone solo near the start of the drill. This year’s drill is written in college band style with COVID19 restrictions in mind, according to Tenaglia. “There

Senior Christian Kegel, who shares drum major duties with senior Lauren Waltz, said that the challenges of this year’s drill stem from the short amount of time members have been given to practice. “The drill is challenging not in the traditional sense, but in the speed we are learning it at, he said, adding, “We don’t have the same skillbuilding time (as we usually have). Tenaglia expressed pride in the students’ quickness in learning the drill. “The students have risen to the occasion, he said. “They are able to do things we would normally expect them to do, and we are really proud of them. Kegel said that he believes the students are happy to be there. “We get to play music with our friends, he said. “That’s what we come here for. Waltz added that many of the students had not seen each other since schools closed in March. “For a lot of us, this is the first time that we’ve seen some of our friends in six months, she said. “It’s cool that we get to see (them) again. Enjoying time spent with friends has been a theme for this year’s camp. “The mantra of camp is ‘embrace the moment’ because you never know what will (happen), said Tenaglia. “We really appreciate the time we’re spending together and the music and that we’re able to do this. Prior to attending camp each day, students completed a prescreening form and took their temperatures. During camp, masks were worn and social distancing practices were observed.

Local Author, Illustrator Publish Children’s Book Local author Hillary Daecher and illustrator Angie Hohenadel have teamed up for the first time to create a children’s book titled “SOAR.” Daecher, who lives in Lititz, has been writing short stories since she was a child. “SOAR” is her first published children’s book. To learn more, readers may visit www.hillarydaecher.com. Hohenadel is a high school art teacher and artist in Lancaster. “SOAR” is her first illustrated children’s book. “SOAR,” published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd., tells the story of Ramone, a shy, ruby-throated hummingbird, who is about to leave the nest for the first time. However, his anxiety and fear keep him from taking off as he contemplates all that could go wrong. Full of kind words and encouragement, Ramone’s mother gives him room to work through his emotions, building his confidence and letting him set his own pace. Ramone watches as his friends soar through the sky, realizing all he might miss out on if he does not conquer his fear. Ramone’s adventure showcases the emotions, both positive and negative, that children experience as they approach new challenges. Accompanied by illustrations, the tale guides readers through Ramone’s emotional journey, showing children that fear must be overcome in order to grow. The book addresses the topic of going back to school, which can bring about feelings of uncertainty in children of all ages. Whether the first day of school starts as traditional in-classroom learning or in the new virtual classroom, it is natural for children to be nervous. The book provides solutions on how to talk with children about their emotions. Free digital resources, including Ramone’s Word Search and Make Your Own Nectar Recipe, are available on the Schiffer Kids Resource Hub. For more information, readers may contact Abigail Holden at Abigail.h@schifferbooks.com or 610593-1777. Information about Schiffer Publishing Ltd. is available at www.schifferbooks.com.
