Rebecca Branle, executive director of Venture Lititz, enjoyed writing the Eventbrite description of the 2021 Lititz Gala, which will have a “Film Noir” theme. Choosing descriptions like “fatale-inspired dresses, fedoras, and dark lips” to promote the event, Branle admitted, “I had some fun with the copy. human trafficking survivor. “We share out of our experience (with victims),” reflected Esbenshade, “but when you hear it firsthand (from a survivor), it’s a different experience.” North Star Initiative has been fighting human trafficking in Lancaster for more than 10 years. More than three years ago, the organization began operating The Harbor, known as Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. This year’s fundraiser for North Star Initiative will be held at Warehouse 100, 100 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Friday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. North Star did not hold the annual fundraiser in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year a larger venue will allow for more attendees to stand at high-top tables enjoying tapas and mocktails if they so choose. Limited seating will also be available. A hybrid option will provide those who choose to attend virtually with a link and a delivery of tapas and mocktails to hold a watch party in their own home. Both a silent auction and a live auction will be part of the event. The
live auction will feature auctioneer Tim Keller. The silent auction will open online on Friday, Oct. 8. The online silent auction is open to the public, and those wishing to bid may do so by connecting to a link at https://northstarinitiative.org or by searching for “North Star Initiative” on Facebook. Among the many items that will be auctioned off are a vacation on Anna Maria Island, Fla.; a shooting range pass; a 24hour rental of a 2021 Corvette; and a wine tour at Waltz Vineyards. Esbenshade said that the organization hopes to raise $150,000 from this year’s event and that the funds are necessary to help battle the expanding problem of human trafficking. “Through COVID, we saw an increase (in need),” Esbenshade shared, noting that The Harbor filled up over the last year or so. “The pandemic compounded existing vulnerabilities and opened the door for individuals to be exploited,” she explained, adding that the shutdown “created an ideal environment for human trafficking to evolve and flourish.” Esbenshade cited a number of situations where women and children may have been put into vulnerable positions due to COVID-19 restrictions. Venture Lititz from pg 1
at Brownstone Manor, 2 W. Orange St., Lititz, from 7 to 10 p.m. The event, designed for adults age 21 and over, will include special drinks, food, live music, dancing, and Film Noir-inspired activities. Branle used the phrases “blackand-white kind of 1940s glamour” and “smoky cinematic drama” to describe the intended atmosphere of the evening. Attendees will be encouraged to dress in keeping with the era. “A trench coat (maybe),” suggested Branle. “It’s certainly not required, but it adds an element of fun to the event.” The theme will also be apparent in the activities, which will include quizzes revolving around famous actors and actresses from the time and vignettes. Quiz participants may be eligible for prizes. “There will be lots of interesting things to look at,” noted Branle, adding that the look of the venue will be heavily inspired by the theme as well. “One of the coolest draws is the (creativity of the) decorating committee,” said Branle. “(Attendees want to see how) they will have transformed the Brownstone Manor to fully match the theme.” “The real star of the night will be the food,” Branle, pointed out, noting that locally owned organizations have been enlisted for the dining pleasure of the guests. “Lititz Springs Inn and Spa will do crab cakes, a carving station, and a large selection of heavy hors d’oeuvres that all sound ridiculously delicious,” said Branle, who noted that a special Lititz-themed cocktail will be created by Stoll & Wolfe Distillery and a craft beer will be provided by Fetish Brewing Company. Music for the evening will be provided by Pocketful O’ Soul, known for renditions of dance songs. Branle noted that the band will play cover tunes and there will be plenty of room for dancing. “There will be some seating and high-top tables to watch the goings on, but we encourage people to dance and have fun,” she said. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, may be purchased at www.venturelititz.eventbrite.com or at the Lititz Springs Inn and Spa, 14 E. Main St., Lititz.

Old Zion from pg 5 The worship service will also include music and hymns from the time period, presented by soloist Amanda Mrenna and J. P. Welliver on Old Zion’s pump organ. The anniversary service will be the first public event held at Old Zion since the COVID-19 pandemic caused the discontinuation of activities. Following CDC recommendations, guests are required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.
