WHS Prepares To Present “Magical Mystery Tour” BY ANN MEAD ASH

Normally, Warwick High School (WHS) band director Matthew Tenaglia brings marching band members together at the end of May to start learning marching basics in preparation for band camp later in the summer. This year was not normal. With students at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Tenaglia began having online meetings on Tuesday evenings in June and July to talk about marching, music, and the fall drill. When the planned drill was discarded, Tenaglia asked the more than 80 band members for suggestions. “They voted on the show they wanted to do,” recalled Tenaglia, who reported that “Magical Mystery Tour - The Music of the Beatles” was the No. 1 choice, followed by “Star Wars” and “The ’90s Boy Band Show.” When students began meeting at the field behind the school four days per week during the first three full weeks of August, a drill written by Scott Goebel had been prepared

to accompany a number of Beatles tunes. The show will open with “The Magical Mystery Tour Opener,” which includes some portions of “Penny Lane.” The ballad will combine “Blackbird” and “Yesterday,” followed by “Eleanor Rigby.” The show will close with “I Saw Her Standing There.” At this point, Tenaglia expects the marchers will perform the drill at home games. They will also take part in Cavalcade of Bands virtual adjudications. “We will be able to submit a video and get feedback to replace what would have been (live competitions),” said Tenaglia. “We are constantly seeking performance experiences for our students.” Several students will be spotlighted in the show. The 13 members of the color guard will have a feature at the beginning of the performance. Ethan Darling and Jett Lauer will have trumpet solos in “Magical Mystery Opener” and “Blackbird,” respectively. Seniors Noah Evans and Adam Ciampaglia will be featured on saxophone in

Lauren Waltz (top left) and Christian Kegel (top right) will serve as drum majors for the Warwick High School fall marching band show, which will feature the music of the Beatles.

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. See Letter pg 10

the opener, and Kerri Hahn will also have a mellophone solo near the start of the drill. This year’s drill is written in college band style with COVID-19 restrictions in mind, according to Tenaglia. “There are a lot of lines and a lot of distance (between students),” he said. “At no time are we within 6 feet of each other.” He also noted that there are a lot of follow-theleader type moves and linear formations in the sevenminute show. Senior Christian Kegel, who shares drum major duties with senior Lauren Waltz, said that the challenges of this year’s drill stem from the short amount of time members have been given to practice. “The drill is challenging not in the traditional sense, but in the speed we are learning it at,” he said, adding, “We don’t have the same skill-building time (as we usually have).” Tenaglia expressed pride in the students’ quickness in learning the drill. “The students have risen to the occasion,” he said. “They are able to do things we would

normally expect them to do, and we are really proud of them.” Kegel said that he believes the students are happy to be there. “We get to play music with our friends,” he said. “That’s what we come here for.” Waltz added that many of the students had not seen each other since schools closed in March. “For a lot of us, this is the first time that we’ve seen some of our friends in six months,” she said. “It’s cool that we get to see (them) again.” Enjoying time spent with friends has been a theme for this year’s camp. “The mantra of camp is ‘embrace the moment’ because you never know what will (happen),” said Tenaglia. “ We really appreciate the time we’re spending together and the music and that we’re able to do this.” Prior to attending camp each day, students completed a pre-screening form and took their temperatures. During camp, masks were worn and social distancing practices were observed.

STRUGGLING WITH OPIOID ADDICTION?

Live Story Time from pg 1 with young children had laid their blankets on the grass. In spite of the few drops that fell from the sky every now and then, Moyer and Richard stood on the raised stone patio at the back of the library. “ Welcome, everyone,” proclaimed Moyer into the microphone. “ We are so happy you’re here and that you have chosen to come and have some fun at the library today.” She introduced Richard and noted that attendees are asked to wear their masks from the time they arrive until the family is seated. Story time opened with

the song “Alabama, Mississippi” by Jim Gill. Moyer, Richard, and the family members on the grass sang and clapped along and shook their hands in time to the music as the lyrics directed. W hen the song finished, Moyer directed each family to white bags located at their designated spots. “There’s one for each family,” she said. “Pull out the book ‘Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!’ (It’s) a gift for your family from the library. The book was selected to be part of this year’s Pennsylvania One Book, Every Young Child Campaign.” Moyer

encouraged the families to follow along as she read from Bob Barner’s book that talks about fluttering butterflies and spotted ladybugs. The reading was followed with a “buggy” song, “Shoo, Fly, Don’t Bother Me.” The lyrics suggested the children jump like frogs, flap their arms to mimic a bird taking off, and crawl like a bug. Richard read the second book. “Our next book is a big book,” she said, gesturing to Moyer, who stood to Richard’s right holding up the enormous book. “The title is the name of the book, (which is) ‘In the Tall, Tall Grass,’ and the author is Denise Fleming. She wrote

the story,” Richard explained to the children. Richard read to the gathering about all the things found in the tall grass, while Moyer turned the oversized pages so children could see the brightly colored pictures. The story explored the tall grass and pointed out occupants including ants and snakes and moles. “Can you snap like you’re catching a fly with your tongue?” Richard asked. The book ended by saying “goodnight” to the tall grass, and Richard asked the children if they could pretend to be going to sleep. The group then sang “The Ants Go Marching,” counting up to four by four, before Moyer read “The Itsy

Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course virtually in September. The Pennsylvania Food Code will soon require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be onsite at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the course at many locations across the state. These in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling and serving food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities.

After completing the course and passing the multiplechoice exam with a 75% or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification will be good for five years. Penn State Extension will hold the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course in Spanish at two locations. Activities will follow CDC and local guidelines for COVID-19. The course will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 15 and 22. The certification exam will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The deadline to register is Tuesday, Sept. 8. The course will take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 17 and 24, at Penn State Extension Lebanon

County, 2120 Cornwall Road No. 1, Lebanon. The certification exam will be held on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The deadline to register is Thursday, Sept. 10. Penn State Extension educators have received extensive training in food safety. By taking a course through Penn State Extension, participants will have access to its wide system of community educators

and science-based educational resources. The course fee will cover the cost of the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, exam, answer sheet and learning materials. For further information, readers may contact Ana Figueroa at 717-3946851. To register, readers may visit https://extension. psu.edu/servsafe-in-spanish or call 877-345-0691.

The run will be a professionally timed race on a safe offroad course, which loops through Landis Homes and finishes back at the starting line. Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved. Link hopes the event will appeal to those who have missed running in traditional 5Ks. “We are trying to expand our horizons by connecting

with folks who haven’t heard of us before to do some sort of in-person run because theirs was canceled,â€? she said. “It will look a little different, but we want to offer that race experience.â€? Organizers will station people on the course to provide cheers and encouragement to create the exciting race opportunity many runners have been missing. “Part of the fun of running is starting at the line ‌ hearing the gun go off ‌ we want to pay respect to those people who haven’t had any (live) race opportunities,â€? said Link, who added that because the event is a run/walk, those wishing to take things more slowly are welcome too. “Come and have fun and walk three miles,â€? she said. “We’re excited for this.â€? “We have monetary prizes for the winners of the in-person race,â€? reported Link. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners, and medals will be awarded to the top three runners in eight age groups. The 2019 race first-place overall finishers were Merlin Lantz of Leola with a time of 18:58 and Ann King of Lititz with a time of 23:16. COVID-19 precautions will include limiting the race to 225 entrants. Masks are

encouraged during non-running portions of the event, but are not required during the run. Social distancing will be encouraged. Link explained that the water stations will be self-serve, offering small bottles of water for runners to pick up as they pass. Friendship Community is a faith-based, licensed provider of disability services and has been cultivating the capabilities of intellectually disabled and autistic individuals since 1972. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. “We are really trying to

think outside the box, as we have had to do for all COVID fundraising, said Link, who noted that crowd support fundraising will be available this year. “As people register, they can create a fundraising page, so they can find sponsors for their first mile and second mile. Registrants who want to raise additional funds may do so at http://bit.ly/FC-5K -Fundraise2020. The cost for the event will be discounted until Friday, Sept. 25. Tech shirts will be distributed while supplies last. Online registration, available at www.FriendshipCommun ity.net/5K, will close at midnight Wednesday, Sept. 23. There will be no discount for those who register on the day of the race. Readers who have questions may call 717656-2466 or email devel opment@friendship community.net.

Friendship Community will hold a fundraising 5K with options for a virtual race as well as an in-person race on Sept. 26.

Free Link To Connect Families To “Angst” BY ANN MEAD ASH

the curriculum of the weekly GOTR team meetings. “We provide a really safe space for our girls to sit and talk about their emotions and name their emotions,” she said. “When we saw this documentary, we realized that this is a (way to) engage our community in a conversation that is so important to have right now.” “The film (seeks to) normalize the conversation (about anxiety),” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “It makes it feel that it’s OK to talk about this because everyone experiences it.” Johnson noted that with teams meeting in a variety of ways this fall, including virtually and in environments where it is safer to socially distance, the organization wanted to do more. “We feel such a sense of responsibility to the hundreds of girls we would normally have in our program this fall,” she said. “(We asked), ‘How can we reach them in a way that is important and relevant?’” Realizing the film could have an impact, GOTR chose to offer the screening. Area families who wish to register to watch the film may do so for free at www.gotr lancaster.org. A few days before the event, GOTR will

Local Author, Illustrator Publish Children’s Book

send registered parties a link to the online event. In addition to the link, families will receive a discussion guide they can use to follow along. “IndieFlix has also provided pandemic tips for parents to help them deal with kids’ anxiety,” said Yohe. Because there are only a limited number of links available, organizers encourage GOTR members and families to register early. Sponsorships are being sought, and opportunities to donate will be offered at registration. “We are calling this a Thoughtful Fundraiser,” noted Yohe. This is not the first time GOTR has offered a film on a culturally significant topic with a panel discussion to its members and families. In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”

Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said. To address that anxiety and provide a service to Lancasterarea GOTR members, the organization is providing a free link to the film “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety” Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 8, 9, and 10. The initial live event will begin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8. “The GOTR team will open up the evening by sharing our mission and our reasons for hosting this event,” said Yohe. Following the opener, the 56minute documentary will be shown, and then a live, halfhour discussion with approximately four panel members from related fields, such as psychology and pediatrics, will be held. Audience members will be able to submit questions to the panel. During the next two days, GOTR members and their families will have the option to watch the entire event via the link. The documentary, which was produced by IndieFlix, utilizes interviews with children and teenagers to explore the facets of anxiety and how it impacts relationships, along with offering possible solutions. Olympic athlete Michael Phelps is interviewed, as are mental health experts. “‘Angst’ opens up the conversation Girls on the Run-Lancaster, a youth development about anxiety,” said Yohe, who program, will host a free virtual forum and film added that the film fits with “Angst,” on Oct. 8, 9, and 10.

Local author Hillary Daecher and illustrator Angie Hohenadel have teamed up for the first time to create a children’s book titled “SOAR.” Daecher, who lives in Lititz, has been writing short stories since she was a child. “SOAR” is her first published children’s book. To learn more, readers may visit www.hillary daecher.com. Hohenadel is a high school art teacher and artist in Lancaster. “SOAR” is her first illustrated children’s book. “SOAR,” published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd., tells the story of Ramone, a shy, ruby-throated hummingbird, who is about to leave the nest for the first time. However, his anxiety and fear keep him from taking off as

he contemplates all that could go wrong. Full of kind words and encouragement, Ramone’s mother gives him room to work through his emotions, building his confidence and letting him set his own pace. Ramone watches as his friends soar through the sky, realizing all he might miss out on if he does not conquer his fear. Ramone’s adventure showcases the emotions, both positive and negative, that children experience as they approach new challenges. Accompanied by illustrations, the tale guides readers through Ramone’s emotional journey, showing children that fear must be overcome in order to grow. The book addresses the topic of going back to

S TAY S A F E So our community can stay open. It’s good to be open. But to stay open, we need to stop the spread of COVID-19. We can do that with three simple steps: • Wear a mask in public

• Wash your hands often

• Maintain social distance — 6 feet

These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.
