Organizations Partner For Rothsville Community Day By Ann Mead Ash

Terry Marxen, one of the organizers of Rothsville Community Day, remembers how the 5K Fun Run/Walk that kicks off the event got started. “The run/walk was (organized with) WellSpan (Family and Pediatric Medicine of Rothsville) to promote the idea of being healthy and getting the local people out to walk or jog,” said Marxen, who noted that the event now raises funds for Wellspan’s Prescription for Caring to help people who cannot afford necessary medications. The 17th annual Rothsville Community Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Forney Field on Church Street in Rothsville. This year’s 5K Fun Run/Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration at Forney Field on the day

Door prizes from local businesses will be given away throughout the day. Food items that will be offered free to attendees will include grilled hot dogs. Free whoopie pies have been featured at past events, and a local Italian restaurant plans to offer samples of its food. For 2018, the featured performer will be singer Steven Courtney, who will entertain children with his original music at 1 p.m. Courtney, who is based in Lancaster County, has performed more than 6,000 concerts and won a number of awards for his children’s music. of the event will open at 9 a.m. Free events will begin at 10 a.m. with a bounce castle, barrel train rides, and games. “St. Paul’s Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church will coordinate a (flying disc) game, soccer goal game, and feed-the-duck game for children,” said Marxen. The helicopter candy drop, which is open to children age 12 and under, will take place at 10:45 a.m. Other Rothsville Community Day activities will include an egg toss, a wheelbarrow race, and a three-legged race. Participants will be split into two age groups: children and adults. “Prizes will be gift certificates to local businesses,” said Marxen.

Local musician Steven Courtney will entertain children with his original music at 1 p.m. at Rothsville Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Forney Field on Church Street in Rothsville. Food, games, and other activities will all be part of the 17th annual event.

The Lititz Moravian Archives, in conjunction with the Lititz Historical Foundation, will host a special historical program on Friday, Sept. 14. The organizations will welcome Scott Paul Gordon, who will sign copies of his new book, “The Letters of Mary Penry: A Single Moravian Woman in Early America.” Books will be available for purchase between 6 and 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Lititz Moravian Church, located at 1 Church Ave., Lititz. Additionally, Gordon will conducting two mini lectures on Penry at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the same location. “The Letters of Mary Penry” introduces readers to an unmarried woman who worked,

worshiped, and wrote about her experiences living in Lititz during the second half of the 18th century. Nearly all the letters, dated from 1762 to 1804, were written in Lititz. The collection brings together more than 70 of Penry’s letters, which Gordon compiled, transcribed, and annotated. The letters provide a sustained glimpse into the spiritual and social life of a single woman at a time when singleness was extraordinarily rare. They also illuminate politics, religion, and social networks in early America. Additionally, guided tours will be available to Mary Penry’s gravesite in God’s Acre, and the Moravian Museum and

Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are allowed to change the amounts of their plan deductibles, co-pays, and total out-of-pocket expenses, as well as their drug formularies each year, which is why Medicare strongly recommends that beneficiaries compare their current plan against other plans available for 2019. The information sessions are for people already on Medicare and enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, readers may call Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717299-7979, 800-801-3070, or by email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown. The event will include a general auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a themed basket auction, a silent auction, a heifer auction, a coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions happening simultaneously. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a concert by Phredd. The event will include a car show and a 5K Run for Relief, as well as an area for vendors of crafts and art. A farmers market will offer fresh produce and baked goods, including pies, made-on-site Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza. New this year will be a tractor show and Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, which is a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, pickles, artisan bread, specialty nuts and pots. Warwick Spikers Post Mixed Results by Vaughn Brown

The Warwick girls’ volleyball team opened play last week with two matches and came away with a split losing to Elizabethtown 3-0 but then rebounding with a 3-0 victory over McCaskey. That landed the Warriors (1-1) in fifth place in Section One to start the new season. Against the Bears last Tuesday, the girls struggled to find their groove both offensively and defensively as Lauren Lefever led the team with three kills and Rachel Adams accounted for two blocks. Adams also joined Jackie Barilar, Allison Forsythe, and Ashley Glouner in serving up an ace apiece. Elizabethtown held off a spirited Warwick attack in the first game, winning 25-19 but then cruised through the second on the way to a 25-9 score. In the third the Bears pulled away to ice the victory, winning 25-17. The girls came out on top of a competitive first game, 25-23

and then buried it in the final two, winning 25-11 and 25-6. “(We) Started out making a ton of errors and cleaned it up and started to play better,” commented head coach Brad Glouner about his team’s play on Thursday. “We are very young and inexperienced.” The Warriors also played in the Wilson Invitational on Saturday where they faced some stiff competition while going 0-8. “We showed signs of improvement but were just very inconsistent. We were trying many different lineups to see what would work best. We think we found one and will practice that one this week.” FOOTBALL After racking up 125 points while winning their first two games of the

season, the football team traveled to Manheim on Friday where they took on their backyard rival Barons in their third straight non-league game. Despite the intimidation factor of entering a hostile environment, the Warriors took the fight to the home team but came up just short in a 27-20 losing effort. With that loss Warwick (2-1) finds itself in a three-way tie for second place in Section One along with Cedar Crest (2-1), and Wilson (2-1). Manheim Township (3-0) sits in first place with no teams in the section having played a League game to date. With a 94-yard opening kickoff return for a touchdown by Trey Glass that electrified the Warwick faithful, the Warriors looked poised to pull off

an upset against a Baron team that was uncharacteristically sloppy. The Warriors benefitted from three Manheim turnovers in the first half, one which led to a 25-yard touchdown run by Nick Fucci (10-49, TD) to put Warwick ahead 14-0. It was a bruising running game by the Barons, however, that eventually took its toll on the Warwick defense. Manheim racked up 203 yards on the ground including a 1yard touchdown by quarterback Evan Simon that capped a 27-yard drive that was set up by a Manheim interception. That cut the deficit to seven with the score 14-7 just

before the end of the first half. A strong defensive effort by the Barons held Warwick to only 48 yards rushing on the night but they were able to find some success in the passing game with 156 yards through the air. The Warriors were led by Glass who had six receptions for 82 yards and Conor Adams who caught three passes for 46 yards while Fucci led the rushing attack. Three more scores by Manheim in the second half on drives of 62, 41, and 47-yards put the Barons ahead 27-14 with 6:45 remaining in the game. With Warwick’s offense

struggling, the Warriors changed gears on their final possession and substituted Joey McCracken at quarterback. Warwick then went on an 80yard drive that took 12 plays, consumed 4:12 off the clock, and resulted in a 14-yard touchdown pass to Hilton Michael which pulled the Warriors to 27-20. It was too little too late for Warwick, however, as Manheim continued to grind out the clock to pick up a first down and seal the victory. TENNIS Playing two matches in two days, the girls’ tennis team first lost to

Manheim Township 7-0 and then came back with a 3-2 victory over Garden Spot. That placed Warwick (0-1, 2-3) in sixth place in Section One as of last week’s play. The Blue Streaks proved to be a tough matchup for the ladies at home as they swept all three doubles matches with identical 8-0 scores. However, the Warriors found some success in singles play where they were able to win five sets in total. Lillian Marino lost to Avery Palandjian 6-2, 6-0, Heather Mitchell and Kaelan Miller both lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to Nicole Honrade and Julia Briner respectively and

Kelli Kreider was able to turn away six of those shots. Kendall Morgan had four saves on goal for Warwick. With the score tied 2-2 at halftime of the boy’s game with LampeterStrasburg it was a matter of who would blink first. That happened to be Pioneer goal keeper Caleb Wigley who surrendered the eventual game winner in the second half despite turning away five of Warwick’s eight shots on goal for the night. Drew Stief saved six for the Warriors while each side earned one corner shot apiece. Derek Eckman and Seth Beers both scored for the Pioneers accounting for their offensive total while Warwick had three players notch goals. Ash Deery and Robbie Heckman each scored once and Jay Destinoble added another along with an assist. David Dieal notched an assist as well. FIELD HOCKEY Two games, two different endings. That was the story for Warwick last week as the Warriors beat Conestoga Valley 1-0 but then lost to Manheim Township 1-0 two days later. While outplaying the lady Buckskins last Wednesday with a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal and earning five penalty corners to Conestoga Valley’s one, Warwick only scored once but that was all that was required to seal the victory. Caitlyn Grodzicki got a stick on Biz VanScoten’s shot off a corner insertion and created enough of a deflection to secure the goal 5:20 into the game. Warwick’s offensive aggression provided the Warriors with plenty of scoring opportunities, both before and after Grodzicki’s goal, but they were not able to capitalize as both sides failed to score the rest of the game. Catie Brubaker (3) and Julia Healy (1) combined in turning away all of CV’s scoring attempts while Brooke Eberly made nine saves on the other end. Once again employing a goalie-bycommittee approach against Manheim Township on Friday, Warwick saw the tables turned as Katie Kreider smacked the boards for the Blue Streaks at the 3:14 mark in the first half for the eventual game winner. Brubaker stopped five shots and Healy four but the Warrior offense only produced three shots on goal all of which were turned away by Cat Wilson.

Selena Orta lost 6-1, 6-2 to Camile Henneman. Friday’s match proved more fruitful for Warwick as they went 1-1 in doubles play and 2-1 in singles. Chloe Long and Jania Weist won 6-2, 6-4 over Lillie Risser and Jenna Muttik while Orta and Erin Fleurant lost to Katie Varley and Ashley Risser 6-2, 7-5. In singles, Miller defeated Ashley Risser 4-6, 6-4, (10-6) while Mitchell was forced to retire in the second set of her match with Paige Kemper which ended 6-2, 1-0, and Marino downed Hallquist 6-1, 6-2. GOLF Currently undefeated at 20-0 and sitting in first place of Section Two, the Warwick golf team is in cruise control and has its eyes set on winning some championships this season. In last weeks’ play, which was cut short due to weather, the Warriors once again dominated the field with a 152 scorecard which was 11 strokes better than second place Elizabethtown’s 163. Garden Spot recorded a 168, Ephrata came in at 176, and Solanco posted a 204. Brock Fassnacht, along with Alex Williams from Elizabethtown both led with 33 strokes apiece as the Warriors placed four in the top ten. Zach Stoyer finished in fifth place with a 39 while Kathryn Pelensky and Ethan Minnich both shot a 40 on the day. SOCCER It was a slow week on the pitch for the Warriors as both the girls and boys played only one game apiece. With a 2-1 loss to Manheim Central the girls fell to 1-1 overall but maintained a 1-0 record and first place in Section One while the guys picked up a 3-2 win over Lampeter-Strasburg which placed them in third place with a 1-0 overall record. Faith Kunkle’s goal off an assist by Mickayla Harris in the 30th minute tied the game with Manheim Central last Tuesday at 1-1 but the ladies were not able to overcome the Barons who scored again before halftime to wrap up the victory. All of the offense came in the first half, beginning with Manheim’s Tori Fahnestock who found the back of the net in the 28th minute to take the lead at 1-0. Warwick outshot Manheim 7-6 and held a 5-3 advantage in corners, but

In 2017, the sale attracted nearly 60 vendors. The number of vendors taking part in the fundraiser has grown steadily since 2011, when the first sale was held. Most years, at least 50 vendors have rented spaces at the event. According to organizers, vendors will offer personal care products, makeup, crafts, jewelry, DVDs, produce, and handmade items, among others. Bruey noted that vendors selling a variety of merchandise take part in the event, including representatives of home-based businesses and families selling outgrown clothing, toys, and other household items. In addition to raising funds from space rentals, IU 13 employees sell food at the event. This year’s menu will include breakfast sandwiches and coffee in the morning and hot dogs, baked goods, and cold beverages at lunch time. Approximately 200 IU 13 employees help organize the yard sale. About 40 employees are on-site on the day of the event, and many more donate food to be sold. Helping families avoid eviction is just one way the Social Work Fund aids students. The fund also helps cover clothing costs or medication for IU 13 students. Funds may also be used to cover field trip expenses, school supplies, school lunches, bus passes, groceries, gas, and other necessities. Bruey noted that last year’s yard sale raised nearly $3,000 for the fund. Other fundraisers that the group holds during the year include pretzel sales, a dressdown day, a dinner at a local restaurant, and a paint night. Following the event, IU 13 organizers arrange for a local organization to pick up leftover items that vendors no longer want. This year, a company will take donations for the American Red Cross. There is still room for vendors to take part in the sale. Those wishing to rent a space to sell items may contact tina_herr@iu13.org or 717-606-1600.

Kate Green, Kathy Kuhns, Maureen Lewandowski, and Connie Radziewicz are just a few of the 20plus women who make up the Teal Sisters, a multigenerational support group for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After crossing paths at the office of Dr. Jacqueline Evans, a Lancaster-area gynecologic oncologist, the ladies began meeting together in 2015 on the fourth Tuesday of each month to talk and support one another. Teal is the color that symbolizes ovarian cancer, so the ladies also sport the shade for Teal Tuesdays. “We met informally at each other’s houses but decided in addition to talking about where we were and laughing, we’d (raise) some awareness, because ovarian cancer is silent, explained Green. “But we’re not silent about it. To jumpstart those efforts, the Teal Sisters marched in the Millersville Parade in 2017, flanked by a teal pickup truck as they handed out teal mints and lollipops and information about ovarian cancer and its symptoms. According to Lewandowski, who leads educational presentations on the topic with other Teal Sisters, ovarian cancer is usually not detected until it has progressed to stage three or four, but

early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Lewandowski references the BEAT acronym provided by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative when teaching others about the symptoms, which include: Bloating that is persistent; Eating less, feeling fuller; Abdominal and/or back pain; and Trouble with bladder and bowels. “The big thing is if the symptom lasts for more than two weeks, emphasized Lewandowski. Many women are unaware that a Pap test does not test for ovarian cancer; therefore, Lewandowski urges women to be their own advocate and request an ovarian cancer screening if they are experiencing any symptoms. “All of our stories are different, but every single one of us at one point said something like, ‘Well, I thought it was just fill-in-the-blank, but then it wouldn’t go away,’ said Lewandowski. “You don’t want to think you have cancer. “Most of the people in the group have ovarian cancer, but we’d like to increase awareness for all types of gynecological cancers, Lewandowski continued. “The important thing for people to know is that there’s treatment. The doctors are very conscious of the quality of your time. Green added, “Your life does not stop. I went to the China in the middle of my chemotherapy. There are

options out there, and if one doesn’t work, you try something else. The Teal Sisters make it a point to say they are “living with cancer rather than the commonly heard alternative of “dying with cancer. “We’re not gloom and doom, said Radziewicz. In September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Teal Sisters will take part in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote awareness of the symptoms and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer. The ladies encourage individuals, businesses, and communities throughout Lancaster and York to get involved by displaying biodegradable teal ribbons on their
