Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, is pleased with the success of the 2019 annual adult triathlon on Sunday, Aug. 4. “We had 267 for adults,” said a beaming Ababou. “The next challenge is for the children.” The 13th annual youth triathlon will be held at the rec center, 301 W. are asked to bring their bicycle, a helmet, a swimsuit, a towel, and running shoes to the event. Proper swimwear is required. BVI Schedules 60th Anniversary Banquet Gifts That Give Hope Fair To Move To New Location By Ann Mead Ash
“Our key words are accessibility, affordability, and adaptability as far as creating Gospel-rich materials and getting them out (to missionaries),” said Tom Luttmann, executive director of Bible Visuals International (BVI), 650 Main St., Akron. In employing those principles, Luttmann emphasized that the message is not compromised. “Jesus Christ - yesterday, today, and
forever,” said Luttmann. “How we do what we do has changed, but not the message.” BVI will celebrate 60 years of supplying missionaries around the world with ways of delivering that message at the organization’s annual banquet at Shady Maple Smorgasboard, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Friday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. A gluten-free meal option will be available. A number of speakers will address the gathering, including Luttmann and Jerry Durston, director of Club DJ, headquartered in Saskatchewan, Canada, which holds up to 400 Bible clubs each summer. Elinor Young, a special guest, will share stories of her time serving as a missionary in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, where she

Gifts That Give Hope from pg 1 to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” The fair serves as a strong communitybuilding event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. One of the new participants in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the communi-
ty with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase in-home dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an opportunity to use their existing skills to make a supplemental income and provides Americans with cross-cultural experiences in their own hometown. Exclusive gift certificates will be available for GTGH attendees to purchase. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact (yoga) can have on people, so we want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages atten-
dees to come hungry. A new food tour will allow people to purchase tickets and receive a stamp card that will direct them to the eight booths at the fair participating in the tour. A volunteer or business owner at each stand will provide food education or information about the business, as well as samples of small dishes such as samosas and Liberian rice bread. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, celebrated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. Trash-A-Thon on Sept. 4. Trash-A-Thon, which will occur on Thursday, Oct. 10, is an annual community service project and fundraiser in which students in kindergarten through high school, accompanied by family members and faculty, pick up trash and litter in parks and along roadways throughout Lancaster County. Trash-A-Thon allows students to fulfill two of LAMS’ core values, commitment to the community and serving, by collecting about two tons of trash in one day. It also helps the school to raise funds to meet its annual operating budget, with this year’s Trash-A-Thon goal set at $145,000. In addition to carrying trash bags, donning gloves and wearing bright orange vests or T-shirts designed with visibility and safety in mind, this year, the students will help to educate the community on “The Big 4,” the theme of this year’s Trash-A-Thon. The Big 4 is part of the Recycle Right Lancaster program from the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) to help Lancaster County residents understand what is now acceptable for recycling and what should be thrown into the trash. The Big 4 categories of recyclable items are plastic bottles and jugs with necks, metal food and

Williamson struck the first blow of the game in the 22nd minute and landed the final one as well, scoring her second in the 76th bookending goals by Jess Williamson (25:00) and Caroline Hipple (29:00). The Comets pressured on offense, peppering Morgan with six shots on the day, but Warwick offered a bit more, firing off 10 against a tandem of Penn Manor keepers in Miriam Badri and Brooke Hinkle. Lily Sugra netted the lone goal for the Comets just before the final horn sounded. Adrienna Neiman (9:00) put Conestoga Valley on the board with a
goal early in the first half while Morgan saved four and the Warrior offense offered up six of its own with two corner kick opportunities. The ladies played over 70 minutes of scoreless soccer against Ephrata before Reagan McCarty (71:00) blasted home the deciding goal for the Mounts. It was only the second shot of the game for Ephrata while Warwick doubled them up with four, all of which were stopped by Jocelyn Umana. FOOTBALL Heading into Friday’s matchup with Hempfield on the road, Warwick was looking to continue its high-powered offensive attack and the Warriors did just that, beating the Black Knights 55-7 to stay undefeated in a crowded Section One. Warwick (1-0, 4-0) joins Cedar Crest, Manheim Township, and Wilson all of which have yet to lose after the first four weeks of the season. The Black Knights appeared to be in the driver’s seat after Tanner Hess rumbled for a 68-yard score on just the third play of Hempfield’s opening drive, but it was all Warwick after
that. Joey McCracken completed 18 passes for 278 yards and four touchdowns, 137 of them to Conor Adams who caught three of those for scores, while Colton Miller carried 15 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns as the Warriors racked up 441 yards of total offense. Following Hempfield’s initial touchdown, Warwick scored eight times including an interception by Justin Gerhart that he took to the house from 30-yards out near the end of the half to give the Warriors a commanding 34-7 lead at the break. Both Miller and Adams scored twice before that with Adams, and Caleb Schmitz (6-98, TD) catching one more apiece and Christian Royer (4-61, TD) rushing for a 53-yard score as well. BOYS’ SOCCER Despite dropping their first game of the week 3-2 to Penn Manor, the Warwick boys remained focused and rebounded with a 3-2 overtime win against Conestoga Valley as well as a 2-0 blanking of Ephrata. With those results, Warwick (1-1, 3-1-1) trailed only Elizabethtown (2-0, 5-2) and the Mounts (2-0, 3-2-1) who were tied for first place in Section One. The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead over the Comets last Monday on Broden Price’s first half goal at the
5:56 mark of play but Penn Manor responded with three unanswered scores to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Warwick’s second goal of the game came from Drew Schwartz at 55:58 to cut the deficit in half, but the offense was not able to manufacture the tying score. Out shot by the Comets 10-5, Boston Libhart made seven saves in the net for Warwick which fired off five against Shane Tappany who was able to stop three. Trailing Conestoga Valley 2-1 late in the second half on Thursday, the Warriors got a lift from Jacob Smith who scored the tying goal in the 64th minute and then came through with the win on his second score of the night in the 88th minute. The teams traded goals up to that point with Kyle Thrush (39:00) giving the Buckskins a 1-0 lead which carried through into the second half until Kole Blauch tied it for Warwick in the 49th minute. Owen Linder connected a little over four minutes later allowing CV to retake the lead before Smith came through for the Warriors. Schwartz provided Warwick with its first goal of the game against Ephrata on Saturday when he connected on a corner kick in the 10th minute to make it 1-0. That score

They defeated Ephrata (349), Garden Spot (350), Elizabethtown (352), Solanco (377), and Conestoga Valley (459). Brant Bomberger and Zach Stoyer led for Warwick, carding respective scores of 81 and 85 followed by Tyson Mitchell (87), and Clayton Hartman (88). TENNIS The Warwick girls continued to find traction on the season as they have only one win on their record to date. Last week proved difficult again for the Warriors as they lost 7-0 to Conestoga Valley on Monday and 6-1 to Penn Manor on Wednesday. Versus Conestoga Valley, the girls won six games total, all in doubles, with Aysia Weiler and Ann Barney putting up an 8-4 score at number one and Audrey Hovan and Danin Myers posting an 8-2 result. Against the Comets it was Barney preventing the shutout with a 6-3 win at No. 4. VOLLEYBALL At 1-4 and sitting in fifth place in Section One, the lady Warriors were looking to get into the win column once again last week but came up short in their efforts with 3-0 losses to both Cedar Crest and Hempfield. match versus the Falcons, Warwick battled back in games two and three for very competitive 25-23 results in both despite the loss. Both Lauren Lefever and Libby Smith had five kills and three aces apiece while Gwen Meyer posted three aces along with 17 digs and Allison Forsythe assisted on eight. Traveling to Hempfield on Thursday proved much tougher as the undefeated Black Knights won handily, 25-3, 25-15, and 25-16. In that match Lefever had four kills, Shannon Morrisey had six assists, Forsythe aced two serves, and Meyer recorded 14 digs. FIELD HOCKEY It was a good week for Warwick (3-1, 4-2) as the Warriors maintained second place in Section One behind Conestoga Valley (4-0, 6-1) and Penn Manor (4-0, 6-2) by posting two league victories. began with a 7-1 win over Cedar Crest at home on Monday and followed up with a 4-2 defeat of Ephrata on the road on Wednesday. Warwick benefitted from a fourgoal performance by Emily Behn against the Falcons as she recorded her first goal 7:40 into the first half and sent the other three into the back of the cage in the second. Leanna Strouse gave Warwick its second score of the game when she sent her first of two banging off the back board at the 23:35 mark to head into the break ahead 2-1. Sarah VanScoten extended the Warwick lead to 3-1 when she beat Amanda Wildonger 9:30 into the second half and then it was all Behn as she drove the score up for the final tally of 7-1. Offensively, Warwick took nine corner kicks and had 14 shots on goal while Ephrata only had two corners and four shots which were all turned away by Libhart. The boys had success in their race going 2-1 with wins over Penn Manor, 18-45, and McCaskey, 27-29, while losing 19-42 to Cedar Crest. Jeremy Bell finished second overall with a 16:54 just missing first by two seconds behind Tommy Bildheiser of Cedar Crest with a total of six Warriors finishing in the top 20. helped translate the Bible into the language of the Kimyal people and used BVI literature to help explain the message of the Gospel. Although Young has been ordering materials from BVI for several years, Luttman was first inspired to ask her to speak at a banquet when he saw a video about her life at Lancaster Bible College’s mission week event. The World Team Missions display was showing a video called “Bad Legs,” which was the name the people had for Young in Irian Jaya. “(Young) had polio when she was a little girl,” explained Luttman. “(She and her family) never thought she would be able to go into the mission field, especially in a remote area, and yet God called her.” After completing Bible training, Young went to Indonesia to serve the Kimyal. “What seemed like a physical weakness really illustrated God’s love to the people,” said Luttmann, who explained that Bad Legs is a term of endearment. “(The Kimyal told her), ‘We have people (here with disabilities) who aren’t able to leave the valley where we live. How much must God love us that he sends someone with a disability all this way to share the good news of the Gospel?’” Young told Luttmann that BVI materials had been an important aid to her work. “The visual aspect of the ministry helped people understand the concepts,” he said. In addition to speakers, people who have been connected to the ministry during its history will join the gathering, and artists and writers who have worked with the organization will be profiled at each
table. Luttmann explained that Children’s Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) is a ministry that has been a substantial part of BVI history. Katherine Hershey, who was CEF director in Lancaster, and Mable Ruth Wray, who was CEF director in Harrisburg, are both connected to the origin of BVI, which was founded by area resident Helen Odenwelder. Making materials accessible to missionaries around the world has been an important goal for BVI. Help in accomplishing that feat has been provided by Sam Gunti, who runs large Bible camps in India. Through a special licensing agreement, Gunti is able to print BVI materials for use in his camps. While giving a nod to the past, Luttmann said the program will also look at the present and exploring new avenues God is providing for BVI in ways to adapt materials. “A woman contacted me saying she would like to create a podcast using our stories,” he said. “God is giving us an opportunity to reach more children with the Gospel with all the ways we have of communicating today. We are exploring those opportunities, but with the consistent message that there is one way to salvation - through Jesus Christ.” BVI is a nonprofit organization overseen by a nine-member board. Readers who would like to attend the banquet may register at www.biblevisuals.org/banquet or call 717-859-1131. There is a nominal cost for those age 4 and up to attend the banquet. Banquet sponsorship opportunities are available. BVI asks those who would like to attend to register by Thursday, Oct. 10.

Moravian Manor will present its 2019 Engaging Community Dinner on Monday, Oct. 14, at Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The event, titled “An Evening With Kim Campbell: My Family’s Journey With Alzheimer’s,” will begin with a private reception at 5:45 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the program at 8 p.m. Kim was married to country and pop musician Glen Campbell for 34 years until Glen’s death in August of 2017, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me” shared the family’s journey and opened a national conversation about Alzheimer’s. Determined to help other families on the same journey, Kim founded CareLiving.org to encourage caregivers to take care of themselves and to improve the quality of life of families living with dementia through education, advocacy and real-world change. Museum Becomes AIRA Test Site
SALE 24 MONTHS
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg is currently one of several test sites within the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) for AIRA, the new smartphone app that visitors with limited vision can download and use at the museum. AIRA is a phone app that allows people who have low vision or are blind to connect to a trained professional agent who will describe what they are seeing. AIRA uses artificial intelligence and augmented reality to connect people in real time to remotely located professional agents, who deliver instant access to information and help completing such tasks as navigating health care facilities, using public transportation, and reading prescription labels. People who are blind or have low vision can use AIRA for free through AIRA Access at https://aira.io. PHMC has been working with the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry as part of its 21st Century Museums initiative. AIRA is one of the ways in which the agency is incorporating technology into daily museum operations in an effort to better serve underserved guests. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has already been geofenced for this program, which technically went online June 1, so the museum is already set up to allow the AIRA app to work for guests who have it. The other participating PHMC test sites are the Erie Maritime Museum, Old Economy Village, Pennsylvania Military Museum, Landis Valley Museum, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania. For more information about the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.
