FLEA MARKET
340 E. 28th Division Highway, Brickerville, will hold its annual flea market on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 7 a.m. to noon in the Parish Grove across from the church on Route 322. Food and beverages will be available. Additional vendors may rent 12-by-12-foot spaces for a fee per space. To request a space, contact the church office at 717-6272202 or email bulc@dejazzd.com. Proceeds will benefit the Lutheran World Relief Shipping Fund.
One reason Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, likes organizing the annual youth triathlon is because of the many benefits the activity offers the children who participate. Ababou pointed out that swimming, cycling, and running are all cardio workouts, but they each require different types of breathing. He added that children can learn from taking part in the triathlon as well. “(The triathlon) teaches patience, helps (participants learn) transitioning from one activity to another, (and helps children) learn to follow directions as they go from challenge to challenge,” said Ababou. The 12th annual youth triathlon will be held at the rec center, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, on Friday, Oct. 5, at 4:30 p.m. The triathlon is open to all area students
between the ages of 7 and 15, including those living in neighboring boroughs. Check-in time on the day of the event will be 3:30 p.m., and registration will be open until 4 p.m. Bicycle safety checks will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The event generally concludes by 6 p.m. The rain date will be Friday, Oct. 12. Children will begin the event with a swim in the indoor rec center pool, followed by bike laps in the rec center parking lot and a cross-country-style run on the grass around the building. Participants are asked to bring their bicycle, a helmet, a swimsuit, a towel, and running shoes to the event. Proper swimwear is required. Because there is little time to change between swimming and biking, participants may bring shorts to wear over their swimsuit. Each athlete will be marked with an entry number for timing purposes. Don Fitzkee, director of development for COBYS Family Services, easily recalls the earliest days of the organization’s existence in 1980. “We began as a teen foster care agency with foster families in private homes,” said Fitzkee. During the last few years, COBYS has grown extensively in response to the drug epidemic. “You read stories in the newspaper about people affected by the opioid crisis,” said Fitzkee, “but you don’t read about the children involved.” Fitzkee noted that many of those children go into foster care. “COBYS is See COBYS pg 2
To meet the growing need in the community, COBYS Family Services purchased a building on Murry Hill Circle in Lancaster and moved a number of staff to that location. Christened the Murry Hill Center, the building is the site of monthly foster parenting orientation classes, as well as adoption and foster care services.
Simon Ababou (center), fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, and area youths are looking forward to the 12th annual youth triathlon, which will be held at the rec center on Oct. 5.

Jennifer Cavalcante is a photographer. “I (take pictures) of (wildlife), animals, and people,” explained Cavalcante, as she held a print of flowers so vividly hued the piece resembles a painting. “(This photograph) is printed on watercolor paper, and the paper makes (the colors) really pop,” she said. Cavalcante will be one of nearly 50 professional artists who will take part in the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show that will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature about a dozen high school artists, will be open from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Artists and musicians who will be among many to participate in the 2018 Landis Woods Art Show on Sept. 29 include (from left) Paris Llanso, Jennifer Cavalcante, Stephen Gambone, Lisa Madenspacher, and John Beaumont.

trying to care for those children while their parents deal with those issues,” explained Fitzkee. In response to the crisis and to legislation that has resulted in more children going into foster care, COBYS has its increased staff - nearly doubling in size from early 2015 to January 2018 - and increased its organizational budget to more than $5 million. According to Fitzkee, the COBYS building at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, which housed foster care, adoption, administration, and counseling, was getting a little overcrowded. “We had three to four people in offices, and we were shuttling (employees) to a church for parking because we didn’t have enough space for people coming for counseling (appointments),” said Fitzkee. “We were just running out of space.” Fitzkee said that COBYS engaged a local consulting group to determine the best way to move forward. “One of the things that came out of that process was that we began looking for a new building,” said Fitzkee. In January, COBYS purchased the building located at 444 Murry Hill
Pursuing Christ. Preparing Students.
Sat. 29th, 10 A.M.-2 P.M.
COBYS Family Services purchased and renovated the building located at 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster. Circle, Lancaster, and christened it the Murry Hill Center. “On Martin Luther King Day, we had 59 volunteers there removing carpet, sanding, priming, and painting for nearly 700 volunteer hours in renovations,” Fitzkee recalled. In February, COBYS adoption and foster care staff moved to the new building, and later the Family Life Education staff joined them at that location. COBYS administration remained in Leola, and the counseling center moved to the main floor of the Leola building. Fitzkee noted that COBYS also owns two buildings in Lancaster city, including one at 171 E. King St., where the organization’s Family Life Center offers parenting programs, and the permanency unit at 134 E. King St., where a specialized foster care program operates in relationship with the Lancaster County Children and Youth Agency. “We work with (the county agency) to reunite children with birth parents when
they can (or facilitate adoptions),” Fitzkee explained. An additional counseling center is located in the First United Methodist Church of Palmyra, where COBYS works in cooperation with Palmyra Caring Community. The same situations that have caused COBYS to expand the number of staff have also led to the need for more families willing to provide foster care. “The first step (for people) interested in becoming a foster parent or adopting through COBYS is to attend (a) free, no-obligation orientation (to) get an overview of what the process involves,” said Fitzkee. Introductory sessions are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Murry Hill Center. Readers who would like to register for a class may do so at https://cobys.org/foster-care or by emailing careforkids@cobys.org or calling 717-656-6580.

Participants will be divided into four age groups. Children ages 7 and 8 will swim 25 yards, bike 0.4 miles, and run a quartermile. Youngsters ages 9 and 10 will swim 50 yards, bike 0.6 miles, and run a quarter-mile. Youths ages 11 and 12 will swim 75 yards, bike 0.8 miles, and run a half-mile, and teenagers ages 13 to 15 will swim 100 yards, bike a mile, and run three-quarters of a mile. Ababou noted that participants will be given about 10 minutes of time to warm up by moving to music, which will give them a chance to stretch and prepare for the triathlon. Participants will be given fruit following the event. Each participant will also receive a goodie bag filled with coupons and other items provided by area sponsors. “It’s an exciting day for the (children),” noted Ababou, who added that the students arrive determined to finish the triathlon. In 2017, more than 65 youngsters took part in the event. About a dozen rec center staff members and up to 30 volunteers work together to open the competition to a maximum of 110 participants. Ababou assigns six lanes in the pool with volunteers to check times. Nine volunteers are needed to time runners and another nine for cyclists. Ababou noted that the

Art Show from pg 1 will include jewelry, mixed media, abstract art, landscapes, watercolor paintings, and more. The show is billed as a child-friendly and pet-friendly event. Artist Paris Llanso, known for her distinctive paintings featuring bright colors and large amounts of oil paint sculpted with a palette knife, will showcase her work including a painting of a birch tree she refers to as her “Skittles tree” because she used all the hues of the fruity candy in the piece. Lisa Madenspacher has turned her interest from goats, which she featured at the 2017 show, to pool, with a painting of oversized brightly colored billiard balls being among the pieces she will bring to the show. “I am continually inspired by my environment,” said Madenspacher. “I see composition,” she added, noting that she was invited to a dinner party and noticed the pool table at the venue. “Wherever I go, I am observant of my environment,” she stated. Stephen Gambone’s artwork was chosen as the logo for this year’s show. Gambone is a selftaught painter who has had a passion for art from an early age. For 2018, his featured work will include the painting on which the logo is based, an abstract skyline featuring shapes in uniform lines reminiscent of a circuit board. “It’s simple, but it’s complex,” noted Gambone. During the event, organizers will hold hourly drawings for gift certificates toward the purchase of artwork. Each attendee will receive a ticket as he or she enters the event. Refreshments will be available for purchase from the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. Both admission and parking are free, and additional parking will be

Warwick Football Blanks Visiting Hempfield by Vaughn Brown
On Friday versus Hempfield, Trey Glass scored on a 64-yard pass play from scrimmage to put Warwick ahead 7-0 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first quarter and ended the game with 11 catches for 159 yards. He also ran a punt back for a 95-yard score which put the Warriors ahead 21-0 in the second quarter as Warwick laid 463 yards of total offense, only 50 of which came on the ground, on a thunderstruck Hempfield squad. “Our defense is playing very well they are flying to the ball, commented head coach Bob Locker. “Special
teams are truly playing in a “special way and our offense was good at times but we need to clean up some mistakes. Hempfield, despite the 27-0 loss, was able to generate some offense, they put up 186 yards through the air, but the Warrior’s defense always seemed like it was there to make plays at pivotal times, including five stops in the Warwick red zone. While Nick Fucci (15-57) was the only Warwick running back to finish with positive yardage, it was quarterback Adam Ricketts who scored from three yards out in the second quarter to make it 14-0 before the Glass punt return. added the final insurance in the fourth quarter when he caught a 55-yard score from Ricketts (15-25, 342, 2TD). SOCCER Opening League play in less than desirable conditions, Warwick’s boys overcame a first half deficit and rallied past visiting Penn Manor 3-1 last Monday night. They also edged both Conestoga Valley and Ephrata by 1-0 scores for a perfect week on the pitch. Winning in overtime against the Mounts on Saturday placed Warwick

(2-0, 4-0) in a two-way tie with Hempfield (2-0, 6-0) atop Section One. After playing almost 30 minutes of scoreless soccer versus the Comets, the Warwick defense cracked slightly under pressure allowing Hunter Enck to secure a turnover in Warrior territory and put Penn Manor on the board 1-0 in the 28th minute. That proved to be the only goal allowed by the Warriors who clamped down on defense and got three saves from keeper Drew
Stief through the remainder of the game. Robbie Heckman put Warwick back into the mix near the end of the first half when he was able to work around a pair of Comet defenders and put one in the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 36th minute. “Our first 2 games (9/6 vs. Lampeter-Strasburg and 9/10 vs. Penn Manor) saw us do some really nice things offensively. We generated 3 goals in each game and had some other really good scoring opportunities, stated head coach Gordy Cowher. The second Warwick goal came halfway through the second half when Ash Deery set up for a free kick from 20 yards out and sent a shot on goal that was blocked by Penn Manor’s Fahri Sivri. The Comet keeper
recovered in time to stop the rebound but was not able to repeat a third time when Jay Destinoble sent the second deflection into the open net for the game winner in the 61st minute. A successful Deery penalty kick in the 66th minute provided some insurance for the Warriors in a game where they out shot the Comets 8-4 and held a 7-0 advantage in corners. Stief turned away three Penn Manor shots on goal as well. “On Thursday, against CV we played very well defensively, giving up no goals and no shots on goal, noted Cowher. “However, we struggled to possess the ball at times and as a result we did not create as many scoring opportunities as we did during our first two contests. One was all they needed, though,

win over Ephrata, and a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cedar Cliff, Warwick (2-2, 2-4) ended last week in third place in Section One tied with Hempfield (2-2, 2-5). Emily Behn scored 5:41 into the second half versus Cedar Crest last Monday putting Warwick on the board at 3-1, but at the 19:27 mark Laney Faiola beat Julia Healy, who had six saves on the day, for the fourth and final goal for the home team. Hanna Lewis scored three times in the first half while Cedar Crest peppered Healy with 10 shots and six corners on the way to the win. Scoring twice in the first half and once more in the second, Warwick held Ephrata to only two shots on goal while firing off 12 and held a 10-6 advantage in corners as well. Caitlyn Grodzicki got the juices flowing early with a goal 2:19 into the first half, followed by a Kate Dickow score in the 10th minute before Behn finished things off by smacking the boards off a corner insert in the fifth minute of the second half for the 3-0 Warwick lead and eventual victory. Combining for six saves, Catie Brubaker (1) and Julia Healy (5) helped shut down the Cedar Crest offense, but it only took one Falcon goal from Katie LaFaver in the third minute of the second half to seal the deal for the visitors. able to put one shot on goal as the Cedar Crest defense shut them out in the loss. TENNIS A 7-0 blanking of Penn Manor combined with a 6-1 loss to Conestoga Valley last week kept Warwick (1-1, 3-4) in the middle of the pack in Section One. Erin Fleurant and Chloe Long’s 8-5 doubles win over Sophia Steed and Mallary Groff of CV stood as the lone victory for Warwick on Thursday. Meanwhile, last Wednesday everybody got in on the act against the Comets. In doubles play Fleurant and Long were 8-5 winners, Lillian Marino and Heather Mitchell won 8-0, and Kaelan Miller and Selena Orta pulled off a close 9-7 victory, and in singles Marino (6-1, 6-0), Mitchell (6-1, 6-0), Miller (6-0, 6-1), and Orta (6-11, 6-3) completed the shutout. VOLLEYBALL Warwick lost both of its matches last week as Cedar Crest won 25-17, 25-20, and 25-16 and Hempfield posted 25-10, 25-17, and 25-21 wins in back-to-back shut outs for the lady Warriors. Rachell Adams recorded eight kills and one ace to lead the girls against the Falcons, while posting three kills versus the Black Knights along with Ashley Glouner’s three aces and six assists from Allison Forsythe.

as Heckman struck early off an assist by Garrett Springer in the fourth minute, beating Corey Spotts for the 1-0 lead that held up over the course of the game. Spotts turned away five Warwick shots while his team failed to generate much offense under the defensive pressure of Warwick. Facing a counter-attacking Ephrata team on Saturday that tried to cash in on Warwick miscues, the Warriors failed to hit their stride through regulation before a Heckman blast in the 85th minute ended the contest with a Warwick win. Stief turned away each of the five shots he faced while his counterpart Cole Hummel stopped 13. “We controlled the flow of the game and had a lot of possession,” Cowher noted. “We created a few good scoring opportunities, but again, not as many as we did during our first two games. Part of that was due to the strategy Ephrata employed during the game. The defense is beginning to gel the past two games, so I am hopeful we can start putting the two phases together.” Warwick’s girls covered all three columns of the standings last week when they beat Penn Manor 1-0, tied Conestoga Valley 1-1, and lost to Ephrata 1-0 on the way to a 2-0-1, 2-2-1 record on the season. At the end of last week they found themselves in second place behind Hempfield (2-0, 3-3) in the Section One standings. Jess Williamson, with a solo goal in the 55th minute, came through in the clutch last Monday when the lady Warriors traveled to Penn Manor. She broke a scoreless tie with the Comets. Her goal stood as the game winner as the Warwick defense pitched a shutout, allowing only two shots on goal, both of which Kendall Morgan turned away. Scoring early in Thursday’s game with Conestoga Valley, Lilly PalaciaLewis utilized a Williamson pass to put the Lady Warriors on the board 1-0 in the third minute, a score that stood until CV’s Gabriella BaroneGraybill tied the game in the 53rd minute. Neither side was able to score again through regulation and two overtime periods as Morgan stopped four shots on the day and Alyson Riggle turned away three of Warwick’s attempts. Saturday’s game with Ephrata turned into another defensive battle in which both sides managed eight shots on goal with Jocelyn Umana pitching the shutout while Morgan surrendered one goal to Reagan McCarty in the 27th minute. CROSS COUNTRY Warwick’s girls placed three runners in the top five last week at Cedar Crest, but faced stiff competition from the Falcons who placed three in the top ten, including first overall, and McCaskey which had four runners finish top ten as well. Anna Martin (2nd, 21:46), Caitlyn Wagner (3rd, 21:54) and Sophia Nau (4th, 21:56) helped lead Warwick to a 24-33 win over Cedar Crest, a thrilling 27-28 victory over McCaskey and a 15-55 win over Lebanon which tied them with Elizabethtown for first place in Section One. Alexa Wenger finished 11th with a time of 23:17 and Jaylyn Wagner came in 13th in 24:21, representing the final scores of the day for Warwick. Also finishing were Clara Ford (14th, 24:56), Mariel Deibert (19th, 26:13), Jill Colebert (20th, 26:19), Lindsay Cammauf (22nd, 26:31), Mackenzie Rohrer (24th, 26:50), Alexa Zimmerman (27th, 27:22), Isa Velez

Since becoming the director of advancement at Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC), 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, Kris Wilson has had the chance to hear more and more people mention that it is one of Manheim’s best-kept little secrets. While Wilson agrees with that sentiment, ultimately her desire is to make sure that more people know about the care that is offered to residents at MHNRC. Wilson first learned about MHNRC as she was searching for a retirement home for her mother. Walking inside, she was immediately struck by its cleanliness, the cheerfulness of those working, and the warmth of the overall environment. She has found it to be a wonderful fit for her mother. “I quickly realized how special Mount Hope is. The sheer size and this kind of space just lend itself to a family feel,” relayed Wilson. “The nurses who interact with my mom have such a special way with her, and really all of the staff do.” MHNRC, a nonprofit ministry

of Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, was named a five-star, deficiency-free skilled nursing facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health this year. “Those are two things that are really hard to get,” Wilson remarked. According to Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on Medicaid, and in 2017 alone the retirement home gave more than $1,240,600 in charitable care. Being able to fulfill its mission of providing quality, affordable care to the low-income and disabled elderly population is something that Wilson said is made possible only through the support and generosity of the community. Two major fundraising events are coming up this fall, and Wilson emphasized that all of the proceeds raised will go right back into supporting the residents of MHNRC. On Saturday, Sept. 22, the community is invited to a Harvest Festival and Pig Roast at MHNRC from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day, and antique tractors will be on display. Savannah Huyard is teaching one of the classes, and Haney teaches the other class. According to Connie Dienner, executive director with Cavod, the idea for the program grew out of caregiver Deb Bacon’s requests for a class. “(Bacon) brings her clients to Cavod, and she has asked us to (hold dance classes),” explained Dienner, who added that seeing the value in each person is a foundational concept at the academy. “Cavod is a perfect place for (this) program because of the loving and accepting atmosphere here,” said Dienner. “No one will be treated differently. It’s about who you are as a person and not what you can or cannot do.” Twenty-two-year-old Lydia Leibee of New Holland has taken private dance lessons at Cavod
for some time, but this fall as a member of the Intro to Dance program, she will take a class at Cavod for the first time. Lydia, who has taken worship dance with lyrical dance mixed in, shared that she loved taking lessons at the academy. “My teacher is awesome,” said Lydia, who noted that Huyard has been reassuring and always takes time to pray with her when she asks. Lydia’s mother, Helen, said that Lydia likes dancing because it gives her exercise and energy, but she added that the benefits are more than physical. “It has opened a window (for Lydia),” said Helen, who added that Lydia had always dreamed of becoming an Olympic gymnast. “Even though (Lydia) recognizes she can’t do gymnastics, her (dance) recitals have been amazing.” Helen also spoke glowingly of Lydia’s experience meeting other students at Cavod. “She hasn’t had a lot of contact with other students, but when she has (met them), they have been welcoming and kind,” said Helen. “That doesn’t always come naturally, (so) that speaks highly of the academy, (and) it means so much to (Lydia).” Intro to Dance will delve into a number of types of dance, including jazz, modern, and hip-hop, but Haney said she plans to start with a focus on ballet. “Students will come in, stretch, work at the bar practicing positions and steps, (perform) some technical work, and then do across-thefloor progression type steps,” said Haney, who added that she plans to end each class with some imaginative guided dance to reinforce freedom and joy of movement. Dienner noted that the
Cavod Academy student Lydia Leibee is excited to be taking a new class that the organization is offering for students with developmental disabilities. Two classes exploring a variety of styles of dance will meet weekly at Cavod in New Holland. students with developmental disabilities taking private lessons have enjoyed their accomplishments. “The students ... here have just blossomed,” she said. “We thought, ‘Let’s start a program where they can learn to dance at a (comfortable) pace, with a goal of transitioning students into another class as their capabilities improve.’” Dienner noted that a limited number of scholarships are available to cover half of the cost of a class. Classes began the week of Aug. 27, but it is not too late to register. Readers who would like to sign up or apply for a scholarship may visit www.cavod academy.com. Individuals who have questions about the new class may call 717-354-3355.
