Porchwalk Moves To Park BY ANN MEAD ASH
lexibility can be the key to holding a successful event. Organizers of the Lititz Artisans Porchwalk, which is sponsored by Moravian Manor, realized that when planning this year’s annual gathering of talented artists and crafters. “We transitioned to a oneday show in one location and expanded the hours,” said Nancy Bradley, who is excited to have nearly 30 vendors registered to participate, 11 of whom are new to the show this year. This year’s Artisans Porchwalk, the 22nd annual, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The event will be held in the grassy area between the Oehme Gazebo and the parking lot closest to Broad Street. The park offers ample parking and nearby restrooms. Bradley, who will be participating in the show for the seventh year, noted that there will be “great variety” in the items offered for sale by
F
this year’s vendors. “We will have pottery, gourd art, original watercolor paintings, hammered copper sculptures, mixed-media jewelry, wood turnings, acrylic and oil paintings, handcrafted wooden signs, felted and knitted items, sea glass jewelry, photography, and handcrafted hand bags,” she said, noting that Christmas goose feather trees will be new this year. Moravian Manor will hold a Chinese auction, filling a table with items donated by vendors for visitors to try to win. “Last year we didn’t have a show,” noted Bradley, who added that COVID-19 concerns made it difficult to find hosts to stage the event as it was in the past in the homes, on the porches, and in the yards of Lititz residents. “We wanted to do it (in a way) to bring people together,” said Bradley, who added that she hopes the park will offer space for the event to grow. In keeping with the change of venue, the event has a new logo, which Bradley said reflects both the town of Lititz and the sponsorship of Moravian Manor. See Porchwalk pg 2

Ashley Mayer remembers watching women with strollers walking in Lititz Springs Park 10 years ago. “They would exercise and walk around the park, and I remember thinking, ‘This is so cool. I want to be part of something like that when I grow up,’” said Mayer. Mayer grew up and became a kindergarten teacher at John R. Bonfield Elementary School. Nearly two years ago, her son, Gabriel, was born. “I decided to stay home this last year, thinking I would join something like this,” she noted.

When members of the Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise were searching for a new fundraiser, after COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible to hold their Literacy Bike Ride or annual car show, they looked for something with expanded appeal. “The ride is for bike riders, and the car show is for people who like cars,” said Bill Weik, adding that the event is desgned to appeal to adults of all interests. The Fall Festival will officially be held for the first time this year on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Aberdeen Acres, 406 Aberdeen Road, Elizabethtown. The event, which is designed for adults age 21 and over, will include live music; food; beer, wine, and other beverages available for purchase; and silent and live auctions. Dillwood Band, a three-piece string band, will play from 2 to 4 p.m., and Mama Tried Band, known for soul, funk, and rock, will play from 4 to 7 p.m. Local television reporter Meredith Jorgensen will serve as master of ceremonies. A variety of fall-themed food items will be a focus of the event, with Michelle
To draw attention to the participating artists, organizers have been spotlighting artwork in Facebook posts. “It’s been fun getting the pictures of the artisans and what they do,” said Bradley. She pointed out that the original show in 1999 attracted those who worked in traditional crafts such as scissor cutting, handcrafted books, theorem painting, baskets, and
wildlife art. “I think our (2021) show reflects more the crafters and artisans that are out there (now),” she noted. When she learned that no such official group existed, Mayer decided to research whether one was viable. In April, Mayer started asking whether there was interest on her own Facebook page and then shared her idea to several Lititz pages, telling herself that if at least 10 people were interested, she would hold the group. The first few weeks, up to 15 mothers and children joined her in Lititz Springs Park on Thursdays at 9 a.m. “I think everybody was itching to get out of the house and connect with people,” said Mayer, adding that many of the mothers had given birth during COVID-19 restrictions, so their children had not been around other babies. Now, up to 30 mothers and children, some coming from as far away as Denver, are meeting weekly at the
park. Dubbed the Lititz Stroller Gang, the group gathers in the grassy area between the parking lot and the restrooms. “It’s very chill … between 9 and 9:20 people show up,” said Mayer, who holds a 10-minute optional devotion time. Optional prayer request cards are received as well. “By 9:30 we get everyone back in the strollers and start walking,” said Mayer. “We are just a bunch of moms with strollers, but when we’re walking, we make an impact,” said Mayer, who has led expeditions to Dean L. Saylor Park or to the Treehouse Park, where the children can play. “Sometimes we take a long walk and play here (at Lititz Springs),” noted Mayer, who said that she tries to have the group back at Lititz Springs by 11 a.m.

Before starting the group, Mayer would see other mothers pushing strollers around Lititz and wondered why they all could not be walking together. Now she is hoping to keep the group going yearround. “We will walk until it’s too cold or snowing,” said Mayer. “Once that happens, I would love to look into meeting at a church from December through March. We have such good momentum (that) I don’t want it to end.” With that in mind, Mayer is planning field trips, craft activities like painting pumpkins, and service projects such as gathering items to donate to House of His Creation, which the group has done once already. The OJ club has existed for more than 40 years and is currently run by Shoko Tanaka, who lives in California, and Kathy Gardner, who resides in Indiana. David Deck spends a lot of time turning things over. At antique stores or flea markets, the Manheim resident can be found picking up objects and looking at what’s marked on the bottom. He’s searching for the words “Made in Occupied Japan.” David is a member of The Upside-Down World of Occupied Japan (OJ), a nationwide club of collectors that will be convening in Manheim later this month. After a membersonly meeting, the club will host an event that’s open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1258 Newport Road, Penryn. David estimates that more than 1,000 items from 40 club members will be for sale at the event. “We’ll also do appraisals on site if people want to bring their items,” he noted. In a small building off Route 72 in Manheim, David has amassed an impressive collection of OJ items. Shelves are filled with dishes, tea sets, plates, banks, figurines, toys, lamps and more.
Each item bears a sticker, stamp, engraving or embossment that identifies it as Made in Occupied Japan. As David explained, U.S. forces stayed in Japan from 1945 to 1952, with the goal of helping the Japanese rebuild after World War II. “From 1947 to 1952, General MacArthur declared that anything exported from Japan was to be marked ‘Made in Occupied Japan,’” he stated. “It was marked that way so the American people would know it and would buy it to help the Japanese people get back on their feet.” David, who has been collecting the items for about 25 years, will host the Manheim meeting with his brother, Gary. “Getting together with the club is a lot of fun,” he stated. “We sit and tell stories and get to know each other, since many of us have only

GOTR from pg 1 Following the end of that season, Scudner contacted Jen West, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director, to ask where the program might use her as a coach. Since then, Scudner, who is a competitive adult figure skater with the Red Rose Figure Skating Club, has coached 17 seasons with GOTR, including stints at Fritz and Nitrauer elementary schools and even organizing a community team made up of girls from public, private, and homeschool situations in Leola during 2020. Scudner also set up a decorated 5K course for participants who lived near her home when GOTR’s spring 2020 event was canceled. In June of 2021, Scudner was presented with the Ellen Award, which is named for Ellen McCabe, who was West’s stepmother. GOTR coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, parents, and girls who make up the GOTR teams, among others. Scudner was nominated by parents and participants, with several lauding her positive outlook, caring attitude, availability to the girls, and passion to help them develop self-confidence. Scudner sees coaching as an opportunity to give back while reaping satisfaction from the participants’ accomplishments. “The most rewarding thing is seeing the girls gain confidence and seeing how much they change over the season,” said Scudner, who added that everything about coaching is fun, but that the culminating 5K, which the girls run at the end of the season, is “magical.” The winner of the Ellen Award receives a special bracelet and $500 to donate to the nonprofit of her choice. Scudner chose Patients R Waiting, an organization focused on eliminating health disparities by increasing diversity in medicine.
Cara Scudner
While Scudner organized a community GOTR team at a church near her home during COVID-19 restrictions, the organization is returning to meeting at many Lancaster schools for the fall season. The program will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 6, with a 5K at Millersville University, 40 Dilworth Road, Millersville, at 8:30 a.m. About 20 teams and as many as 400 participants are expected for the fall season, but West would like to see more girls be able to take part in the spring of 2022. To increase the number of participants, more volunteer coaches are needed. “Many of our coaches are teachers, and teachers are so incredibly overloaded right now,” explained West, who is looking to family members of girls and community members to step up. “The girls need the social and emotional connection with friends now more than ever,” said West, who hopes that by spring the program will be able to serve 1,000 girls countywide as in the past. Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) recently awarded interest-free loans to 257 Lancaster County students to offset the cost of their postsecondary education for the 2021-22 school year. The recipients are applicants who demonstrated financial need. The interest-free loans varied from $850 each for students attending one semester only to $1,700 each for students attending a full academic year. LDHL awarded loans to nine single-semester students and 248 full-year students. The loans will be applied to tuition expenses at 82 colleges and universities across the country.
Since 1961, LDHL has partnered with donors each year to provide more than $18 million in interest-free loans to Lancaster County students seeking higher education. Loans are also made possible each year by the repayment of loans granted to previous recipients. LDHL is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide financial resources to Lancaster County residents in support of their postsecondary education goals. By offering funds to Lancaster County students on an annual basis, LDHL hopes to lessen the long-term expense for postsecondary education and training. To learn more, visit www.lancdollars.org.
