Historical Foundation Sets Plant Exchange The Lititz Historical Foundation will partner with the Lititz Garden Club to hold its annual plant exchange on Sunday, Oct. 4. The event, which will be held rain or shine, will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Mary Oehme Gardens located behind the foundation’s museum building at 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz. Plants brought for exchange must be perennials. Each plant must be placed in a container for easy transportation and marked with an identification tag. Plant owners will receive a ticket for each plant upon arrival, and plants will be categorized into sun,
shade, exotic, bulbs, herbs, and ground cover. Tickets may be redeemed for another plant after all plants are placed in the categories and attendees have had sufficient time to explore the categories. Attendees are asked to wear masks during the event and to practice social distancing from others. Free parking will be available along Main Street. Information about the historical society may be found at https://lititzhistoricalfoundation .com, by searching for “Lititz Historical Foundation” on Facebook, or by calling 717-627-4636.

athletes are being marked for timing purposes, and during Tshirt pickup. Youth participants will begin the event with a swim in the indoor rec center pool. This year, they will enter the pool in waves in order to limit the number of students in the pool at one time. The bike portion of the event will be divided into age groups, with ages 5 to 7, 8 and 9, 10 and 11, and 12 and up grouped together. Bike laps will be ridden in the rec center parking lot. The running segment will be held in the grass area adjacent to the rec center parking lot. Children ages 5 to 7 will swim one length of the pool, bike two laps, and run a quarter-mile. Those ages 8 and 9 will swim two lengths, bike three laps, and run a quarter-mile. Youngsters ages 10 and 11 will swim three lengths, bike four laps, and run a half mile. Youths ages 12 and up will swim four lengths, bike five laps, and run three-quarters of a mile. Participants are asked to bring their bicycle, a helmet, a swimsuit, a towel, and running shoes to the event. Proper swimwear is required. This year, athletes will not change between swimming and biking. Students may also bring a water bottle to help stay hydrated.
Sponsorship opportunities for the event are still available. Financial support helps provide shirts, water, and goodie bags, along with scholarship funds for children in need who wish to participate. Along with sponsorships, coupons, a small product or snack sample, water bottles, and other small items for the goodie bags will be appreciated. Generally, about a dozen volunteers are needed, but Ababou said that will change this year. “We will need more volunteers,” said Ababou. About a dozen rec center staff members and up to 40 volunteers from the community will work together to time swimming, running, and cycling. “We need more folks from the community,” Ababou noted. Individuals who would like to sponsor the event or volunteer may call Ababou at 717-6265096, ext. 239, or email Simon Ababou@lititzrec.com. Those wishing to participate may register by calling the rec center, visiting www.lititzrec .com, or stopping by the front desk. Readers who register by Thursday, Sept. 24, will be guaranteed a goodie bag and an event T-shirt. Those who register later will receive goodie bags and T-shirts while supplies last.

includes vice president of development Pam Pautz, who has worked with area nonprofits; vice president of purchasing Mike Willig; and Ken Groff, vice president of store operations. Willig and Groff are both former Amelia’s employees with many years of experience. On June 30, that vision became a reality when Treasures Markets opened its flagship store located at 515 N. Franklin St., Lancaster, between the McDonald’s and McCaskey High School. The 30,000-square-foot building features a variety of groceries, including brand-name and locally produced food items, at discount prices on one side and merchandise ranging from jewelry and clothing to furniture and large appliances on the other. Willig pointed to the variety of food items neatly organized to the right of the store. “We wanted to give the local community access to the type of (grocery store) they don’t have access to in Lancaster City,” he said. Pautz noted that closeout items, including new clothing and shoes, priced at less than a third of the original retail. Outside, 40 free parking spaces are available. The store is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. Pautz explained that the mission of Treasures Markets has several facets: first, to supply affordable food in a food desert; second, to make other items available in the store at reasonable prices and to keep those items out of the waste stream; and third, to offer jobs. “We are working with Water Street Mission’s
David Lambert, DDS
(WSM) Step Up program,” said Pautz, adding that they received a grant to do job training. “We are working in that program to bring some folks over once they complete the program at Water Street.” Groff added that the organization is already working with a few men to do job training. But job training is not the only way the organization has partnered with WSM. “This is a social enterprise,” said Pautz. “We created Treasures Markets as a benefit to Treasures of Hope Foundations, which is a 501(c)(3) with the sole intent to give the profits of this store back to the community it serves. This store is just a vehicle to fund the nonprofit.” WSM is one of the foundation’s main partners, and WSM will receive a large portion of the proceeds. However, Pautz explained that the goal is then to give funds to other nonprofits in Lancaster city that battle homelessness and food insecurity and help provide employment opportunities. “Eventually, there will be a grant process where local nonprofits will be able to apply for money,” she said. Treasures Markets could use volunteers at both the store and the organization’s warehouse at 1140 Enterprise Road, East Petersburg. “We need lots of volunteers at the warehouse and here for greeters, to sort donations, tagging, and dressing room attendants,” said Pautz, who directed those who are looking to volunteer to the organization’s website at www.treasuresmarkets.com. She noted that volunteer information includes a description of each job along with a chance to sign up online for the days they are available to help. Donations are also accepted at the warehouse. “We need donations of clothing, household goods,

Donation hours may be found at the website. On one wall of the market are logos of organizations that have sponsored the market, including High Foundation, Fulton Bank, Ephrata National Bank, and Community

Women Helping Women BY ANN MEAD ASH
About three years ago, Rosanne Selfon, former president of the international Women of Reformed Judaism, wanted to see a group of women at Temple Shaarai Shomayim take part in a pilot program of women helping women. While that program did not quite take off, Selfon was not ready to give up, and that determination resulted in significant contributions to two local nonprofit organizations. “About 18 months ago, we decided to try it again,” said Selfon, who co-chaired the group with Gail Sterman of Willow Valley Communities. “We started to talk,” said Selfon, who noted that Sterman was newly arrived from Jacksonville, Fla., at the time. “(Sterman) was very familiar with women’s collective giving. She had experience with it.”
The two began to brainstorm. “We started thinking about what we had to do to make it work … and we laid out a plan,” said Selfon. Part of that plan was to make the group affordable. “We wanted to try to build this up within the temple community,” explained Selfon, who noted that Temple Shaarai Shomayim Rabbi Jack Paskoff puts an emphasis on charity and good deeds. “We do a lot of that, but we thought this would be something women specifically could get involved in,” Selfon said. According to Selfon, women’s philanthropy is growing by leaps and bounds, and she and Sterman saw that it was time for women in Lancaster to join the movement. “ We wanted our women to come to understand the ability they have with their own money to give and make decisions about how that money is given,” she said. “They can determine to whom it is given and for what.” A small group began
meeting in the fall of 2019, giving themselves the name Deborah’s Circle. “We liked Deborah because she was smart and strategic - a general and a judge,” said Selfon of the character from the Torah. She added that the concept of a circle was added because life revolves in a never-ending circle. The group’s mission is to provide financial grants to nonprofit organizations serving women and/or children in Lancaster County. “We wanted to keep it local and have it be about women or women and children,” Selfon said. The group that started with about six women around a table eventually grew to 17. Then, everything changed. “COVID came,” recalled Selfon, who noted that after that the group met via computer, determined to continue what they had started. A steering committee comprised of Selfon, Sterman, Robin Adler, Linda Hirsch, Nancy Kurland, Risa Paskoff, and Joan Sherman formed, and Deborah’s Circle kept meeting virtually. “ We needed to determine
more about who we were and what we were going to be,” said Selfon, who noted that the group set member contributions at $10 per month or $120 a year. In the throes of COVID-19 restrictions, the group had amassed about $2,000. “Originally, we were going to investigate some agencies and ask leaders to come and talk to us about needs,” said Selfon, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions stymied that plan. At first, the group was going to wait to distribute funds, but realizing that the needs local organizations were meeting were increasing, they decided to act. “We called for an (online) meeting of the steering committee, and we agreed to give some of the funds away to organizations that had pressing needs.” The group ultimately gave $750 each to Milagro
