“About a half dozen (of the artisans are) new,” said Porchwalk organizer Gretchen Smith, who is also one of up to 40 artists who will take part in the 20th annual Lititz Artisans’ Porchwalk, a free event that will be held rain or shine in several locations in historic Lititz on Friday, Sept. 28, and Saturday, Sept. 29. Visitors to the six properties where items will be on display may peruse the offerings from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day of the event.

Smith, who makes jewelry, noted that organizers avoid having duplicate types of art at each location so that each home is like an art show unto itself. New artisans this year will include Kim Bleacher, who creates unique interior and exterior metal décor, and Vickie Geiman, who will display decorative painting and multimedia art. New artist Jenn Avery will showcase crafted gourds, and Elizabeth Gates, also a first-time exhibitor, will offer journals, boxes, and papers for sale. See Porchwalk pg 4

Benefit Auction, Kids’ Camp Bonanza Set At Woodcrest By Ann Mead Ash

“My favorite time of the auction is when we auction off the special projects,” said Cliff Martin, executive director at Woodcrest Retreat. “It is humbling to have people bid just to support the ministry with nothing to show for it but a tax-deductible receipt.” Martin noted that this year bidders will have the opportunity to donate funds for two special projects if they attend the annual benefit auction and Kids’ Camp Bonanza, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, beginning at 9 a.m. “This year we have trees and shrubs to finish the Indian Rock Center project and two golf carts to replace the two (we have) that are See Woodcrest pg 2

Finding Hope National Day Of Prayer For Mental Health Service Slated By Ann Mead Ash

This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing with mental illness.” See Prayer Service pg 3

Gwen Didden (left) and Cathi Myers (right) are two of the organizers of the National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding service that will be held at Calvary Church on Oct. 11. For this year’s live auction, organizers have gathered a variety of items to sell to the highest bidders, including two gift certificates toward orthodontic services, a new gas grill, an ice cream maker, home décor, fall plants, tools, and loaves of homemade bread. Gift certificates will be sold on a cashand-carry basis throughout the day, with remaining certificates auctioned at 2 p.m. Kids’ Camp Bonanza activities will begin at 9 a.m., allowing parents time to enjoy the auction while their children take part in various activities at rotating stations. Cathi Myers, who has long provided leadership for the event, which will celebrate its 10th observance this year, echoed Didden’s comments. “We want to bring hope to people and help them find hope,” she said, noting that the theme of the 2018 service will be “When People With Mental Illness Don’t Want Help: Finding Hope.” “This topic is so relevant,” said Myers. This year’s service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Sponsoring ministries include No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM) and Faith Friendship Ministries. Assisting with the event is Minds Renewed, which meets at Calvary Church and is a division of Handi-Vangelism Ministries in Ephrata. Members of the organizing committee include Myers and Didden, as well as Clara Ames, executive director of NLAM, and Vicki Bollman, a volunteer with Minds Renewed. A number of experienced speakers will give presentations at the event. Dr. Karla Campanella, a

family doctor and a missionary who is now a psychiatrist in the Philhaven system, will speak on the topic “Involuntary Commitment or 302.” Campanella will delve into what involuntary commitment involves, who can initiate it, and when to use it. “She will help people understand that process,” said Myers, who noted that Campanella has been well received as a past speaker. Dr. Susan Cabouli, a psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience, will speak about practical tips for finding hope, including an ex planation of the LEAP method developed by Dr. Xavier Amador. LEAP stands for Listen-Empathize-AgreePartner, and the method is designed to help a caregiver gain the trust of a patient. LEAP involves empathizing without judgment. Loice Byler, founder of a ministry that helps those who struggle with anxiety and depression, especially women, will share her personal story of being a mental health consumer, including her acceptance

and denial of treatment in the past. “She has seen a difference in her life when she has accepted treatment,” said Myers. “We thought that would be a good viewpoint to share.” Myers added that Byler will also offer practical tips and words of hope. Each year, organizers choose theme verses for the observance. This year’s verses include Psalm 33:22, which reads, “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Another theme verse is Hebrews 10:23, which reads, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Myers reported that the service will include congregational prayer, reading of the Scripture, and time for small group prayer as requested. There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. Readers who have questions may call 717390-4891 or 717-285-5596.

Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) Awareness Day will be observed on Sunday, Sept. 30, and CureLGMD2i Foundation vice president Kelly Brazzo, who co-founded the organization with her husband, Keith, is excited. “It will be the first time we’re all gathering under one umbrella, Kelly explained. “There are more than 30 types of LGMD, and they’re continuing to be diagnosed.

The Brazzos have gained an incredible knowledge of LGMD in the decade since their daughter Samantha was born. After learning that Samantha had the 2i version of LGMD, the Brazzos launched a foundation to promote treatments and a cure. In order to raise funds, the family, which lives in the Hempfield School District, has hosted a game night for seven years and held a golf outing for the first time last year. “When we get our cure, we’ll

keep doing (the game) night for other causes, Kelly remarked. Through the two events last year, CureLGMD2i brought in more than $50,000. That money helped the organization give a $60,000 grant to the University of Massachusetts medical school, which is working with humanized mouse models to test gene therapy. In the past year, Kelly traveled to the school, where she helped to create a 2i steering committee composed of researchers, pharmaceutical developers, and people with 2i from all around the world. The foundation has also given about $140,000 to a clinical trial at Kennedy Krieger. The first human trial of a myostatin inhibitor has produced no negative side effects, but positive impacts have not yet been reported, Kelly said. She added that the foundation is considering co-funding a study on ribitol supplementation. Although it is early in the development process, Kelly is cautiously optimistic that it will be a potential treatment for the wasting muscles experienced in the hip and shoulder areas by those with LGMD2i. “Just because it works in mice doesn’t mean it will work in humans, Kelly said. The foundation’s fundraisers offer an enjoyable way to raise awareness about LGMD2i and to support research. Both events will be held this year on Saturday, Oct. 13. The golf outing will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and take place at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. The participation fee will include light

In July, the Scouts in Boy Scout Troop 307, sponsored by Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim, along with Boy Scouts from Troop 53 in Maytown and Troop 84 in Lancaster, ventured to Yosemite National Park in California for a backcountry hike. The crew split into two groups - one trekking into the northwestern area of the park near the Hetch Hetchy reservoir and the other going into the southern area of the park near Wawona. According to Boy Scout Troop 307 leader William King, each group completed a five-day, 50-plus-mile backpacking trek through the wilderness where they encountered challenging trails filled with granite rock formations, 9,000- to 10,000-foot high mountains, and wildlife. Many of the attendees had previous backcountry experience, which helped them through the trek. King emphasized to each participant that each group needed to work as a team to complete the trek and

The Scouts were successful, only suffering minor blistering, cuts, and scrapes. In preparation, the youths had logged many backpacking hikes, day hikes, and training - including a 20-mile day hike completed in under eight hours. King, who has been working with Troop 307 since 1990, has planned and completed

backcountry treks for Scouts at Philmont Scout Ranch in Glacier National Park, Sequoia National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Smokey Mountains National Park, among other destinations throughout the country. “All I want is for the Scouts to have a good trip that challenges them, and these treks will do that. You do not have a safety net for immediate help; you must rely on your group’s abilities,” King explained. On the Yosemite trip, the Scouts also had the opportunity to explore the Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Pinnacles national parks. Additionally, members visited Disneyland, went whale watching, and watched a Major League Baseball game. Scouts met requirements for badges and advancement during the trip, such as the 50-miler patch and badges for cooking, hiking, backpacking, camping, and orienteering, to name a few. and 10 assists on the road against the Streaks last Tuesday in a match that was much closer than the final score showed. After the first set went to Manheim Township 25-18 the lady Warriors forced back-to-back 26-24 sets in the 3-0 loss. Ashley Glouner served up four aces and Jackie Barilar had three blocks for Warwick. “We definitely played better this week and are coming together as a team more,” noted head coach Brad Glouner who, in reference to the Manheim Township game, added, “We had a chance to win two games and just let them slip away. In the third game we were up 24-21 but couldn’t finish it off.” Against Conestoga Valley both Barilar and Forsythe aced three serves apiece with the latter recording 20 assists as well. Rachell Adams finished with eight kills and Bella Peters came up with nine digs. Warwick easily handled the first set 25-13, but a game Conestoga Valley squad, taking advantage of some Warrior miscues, turned up the pressure in the second and third sets which Warwick won 25-23, and 25-20. “We need to control our errors and let the other team make the errors,” added Glouner. “We are starting to

play good defense which we focus on each year at Warwick.” The girls also won the first annual Warrior Classic tournament which was held on Saturday by beating Daniel Boone 2-1 in the finals after finishing off Section One rivals Penn Manor in the semi-finals. The win over the Comets gave them a boost of confidence as well as the two teams were in preparations to play each other on Tuesday. “With a win there we would be 3 -3 in the first half of Section One play and I feel we can make a run in the second half,” added Glouner. FOOTBALL Holding McCaskey to only 89 yards on the ground, Warwick’s defense effectively shut the Red Tornado down and turned in its second straight shutout. Meanwhile, the offense churned out 351 yards and scored seven touchdowns during a 49-0 blowout in Lititz on Friday night. With the win, Warwick (2-0, 4-1) trails only Manheim Township (1-0, 5-0) in Section One and has outscored its opponents 221-33. And the Warriors are scoring from everywhere, on offense, defense as well as special teams. After Hayden Rucci (2-17, TD) put Warwick ahead 7-0 on a 10-yard touchdown catch from Adam Ricketts (7-13, 69 yards, 2 TD) in the first

quarter, the Warriors offense scored on each of their next five possessions and ended the game with a 35-yard interception return by Caleb Schmitz into the end zone. Quarterback Joey McCracken (8-10, 152 yards, 2 TD) came into the game in the second quarter and threw touchdowns to Conor Adams (1-28, TD) and Hilton Michael (4-104, TD) of 28 yards and 62 yards, respectively, for a 21-point lead at halftime. Warwick then added three more touchdowns in the third quarter before Schmitz’s pick-six in the fourth. A Nick Fucci (10-54, TD) scoring plunge from three yards out was followed by a 12-yard hookup from Ricketts to Trey Glass (5-44, TD) and a 2-yard score from Sean Bedessa (4-21, TD) which lengthened the lead to 42 points put an end to the third quarter. Schmitz’s interception return in the fourth marked his second pick of the night. CROSS COUNTRY Warwick’s girls suffered their first loss of the season 23-32 last week to undefeated Elizabethtown in a tri-meet held at Hempfield but defeated the home team 24-31 to remain in second place in Section One at 4-1. While Warwick placed four runners in the top ten to Elizabethtown’s three, all of the Bears’ top runners finished 1-2-3 overall with their final two scorers landing in 11th and 12th and Warwick’s final score coming in 19th. Hempfield’s top

finishers, meanwhile, came in 7th, 9th, and 10th. Caitlyn Wagner (4th, 20:47), Sophia Nau (5th, 21:06), and Anna Martin (6th, 21:14) led the lady Warriors with Alexa Wagner (8th, 21:48) and Clara Ford (19th, 23:15) rounding out the scoring. Finishing things out were Alexa Zimmerman (27th, 25:31), Jill Colebert (28th, 25:39), Morgan Leakway (29th, 25:47), Chloe Nightingale (30th, 25:50), and Isa Velez (31st, 25:52). Also remaining in second place in Section One with a 24-31 win over Elizabethtown and a 21-36 victory against Hempfield, the boys improved to 4-1 as well. Placing four runners in the top 10, Warwick’s Noah Martin finished first overall with a time of 16:51 while teammate Connor Shields came in second place five seconds later at 16:56. Parker Keares (6th, 17:18), Jeremy Bell (7th, 17:24), and David Bach (14th, 18:12) each scored for the Warriors as well and were followed by Jeremiah Hendrix (15th, 18:37), Marcus Wachira (16th, 18:40), Josh Wenger 18th, 18:47), Corbin Kilgore (19th, 18:48), Mateo Chacon (27th, 19:41), Josef Bach (28th, 19:42), and Logan Mull (30th, 20:04). SOCCER Despite a 3-2 loss to Manheim Township (2-2, 6-2) to start the week, Warwick (3-1, 5-1) rebounded with a 2-1 victory over Hempfield (3-1, 8-1) to end it tied with the Black Knights

Through most of the second half the two defenses clamped down until Nicholas Williams also found a way past McCarty for the 2-1 Warrior lead in the 73rd minute before DiSomma finished it for the host Streaks. After a scoreless first half, Hempfield’s George Claxton broke the tie when he headed in a corner kick in the 59th minute for a 1-0 lead. Rob Heckman returned the favor about ten minutes later with his own header to tie the game In the end, however, it was Ben Pennypacker who led the rejuvenated Warriors when he took a perfect crossing pass from Heckman in front of the goal and sent it, and the team, home to victory in the 82nd minute. Warwick’s girls played a trio of games last week and came away with a 2-1 loss to Manheim Township, a 3-3 tie with Hempfield, and a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Garden Spot. That dropped the lady Warriors (1-1-2, 2-4-2) into third place in Section One. The choir, directed by Rosemary Blessing, performed in four airports, multiple museums, several Mennonite churches, two cultural festivals also featuring Muslim and Buddhist performances, a rice field, the tip of a volcano, two Islamic boarding schools, a palace, and one mosque. At some of the venues, the students were able to have faith conversations with Muslims. The trip challenged participants to widen their worldviews.

These interfaith experiences were organized by the director of the Indonesian Mennonite Diakonal Service, Paulus Hartono, who has worked with peacemaking and Christian-Muslim relations in his city of Solo and throughout the country for the past 20 years. Following his experience with the Chamber Choir, Hartono posted a video on Facebook proposing three languages for peace: smiles, singing, and taking pictures. The trip occurred in the wake of five bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya in May. Three churches were among the targets of the attacks. After intensive security analyses, EMM, its Indonesian partners, and MCCL determined that the risk level for the choir was low. Families of choir members were able to make the

final decision on whether to allow their children to participate in the trip. Nearly all of the families decided to continue with the trip as planned. Choir members used the entire year to prepare for their third international trip with EMM’s GO! Summer program, a short-term mission exposure opportunity offered during the summer. Both local and global opportunities are available. Previous international trips included locations such as Germany, Albania, and Bulgaria. The choir’s preparation included learning several Indonesian songs and visiting the Philadelphia Indonesian Mennonite Church. Multiple fundraisers were held, in- Chamber Choir members (from left) Ella Brubaker, Rebecca cluding a dinner featuring authen- Sauder, Kira Denlinger, Daniel Lantz, and Adin Martin enjoy the view at the top of Mount Bromo. tic Indonesian cuisine. “Paths to Prosperity: A Story of Two Generations has been set as the theme for the third annual gala to benefit Mom’s House of Lancaster. The event will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The doors will open at 5 p.m., at which time attendees may purchase beverages and place bids in a silent auction. The plated dinner will be served at 6 p.m. A social hour will be held following the meal along with a program that will include a live auction and several speakers. Lori Burkholder will act as master of ceremonies. The auctions will feature jewelry, getaways, fine dining, spa experiences, sports memorabilia, and entertainment. There will also be an opportunity to win a stay in a Lancaster County bed-and-breakfast. Mom’s House executive director Sara Johns and gala committee member Carole Kirchner related that the client speakers are slated to be an adult who attended Mom’s House as a child, a mother who graduated from the program, and a father who has participated in the program as well. “We give (parents) a chance to break the cycle of poverty through education and child care, Johns explained. “They offer support to the moms and dads to get their educations, Kirchner added. The mission of Mom’s House of Lancaster, located at 415 S. Queen St., Lancaster, is to break the cycle of poverty by helping single parents reach their educational goals. Parents may be pursuing their GED or a master’s degree or anything in between, but all participants have access to parenting and life skills classes, tutoring, a food bank, a children’s clothing closet, a scholarship program, counseling, referral services, and encouragement and support. A major part

of the Mom’s House program is the free state-accredited Keystone Star 3 early learning center for children age 6 weeks through preschool age whose parents are Mom’s House participants. “All of our kids leave our program kindergarten ready, or they are set up with an Individualized Education Program, Johns said, noting that a variety of therapists provide services to children at Mom’s House as needed. Currently, 20 children and 14 parents are active Mom’s House clients. At least a dozen families are on the waiting list. The program, which has been in existence for 28 years, has recently mushroomed. “We have tripled in terms of staff and doubled in terms of children in the last two years, said gala committee chair Dan Massey. Individual contributions are the primary source of funding Mom’s House, Johns said,

rose payment to a Stiegel descendent. Warn is focused on seeing where the Holy Spirit leads and how the congregation can be in partnership with other organizations in the community. “In this day and age, the church has a significant role to play in sustaining and enriching our community life,” noted Warn. “We have a history of trying to meet the needs of people in the community, so I’m excited to see that come to life for Zion in the Manheim community.” Zion Lutheran, 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim, holds weekly worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. All are welcome. To learn more about the church, readers may visit www.zionmanheim.org.

The Rev. Kate Warn

Warn cited the rich heritage and history at Zion Lutheran, which has been in Manheim for more than 200 years, among its many strengths. The church is well known in the community for its preschool and for being the Red Rose Church. Every June the church hosts the Festival of the Red Rose, based on a tradition dating back to Dec. 4, 1772, when Henry William Stiegel and his wife, Elizabeth Holz Stiegel, conveyed a plot of ground on the corner of Wolf and East High streets to their fellow Lutherans on which to build a church in exchange for a unique continual payment of one red rose every June. The church hosts an all-day celebration in conjunction with the annual

In June, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Manheim welcomed the Rev. Kate Warn as its new pastor. Warn had been living and serving in both east and west Africa and Asia from 2009 to 2017 - first in Sierra Leone and Lebanon before heading to Rwanda in 2014 to help start Young Adults in Global Mission in Rwanda, a program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. “I really enjoyed working with young adults,” Warn shared. Young Adults in Global Mission volunteers in Rwanda work closely with congregational, social, and reconciliation ministries of the rapidly growing Lutheran Church of Rwanda. According to Warn, the Lutheran Church in Rwanda has

40 congregations and approximately 5,000 members. It is unique in that it was started by indigenous people rather than missionaries after the 1994 genocide, when Rwandan refugees returned to their nation from Tanzania having learned about Christianity and Lutheranism. “The church in the United States can learn a lot from our brothers and sisters in Africa about forgiveness and reconciliation and what it means to be faithful in a very difficult environment,” reflected Warn. Prior to her time in Africa, Warn served on staff in various capacities at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in downtown Lancaster from 2001 to 2008. She enjoyed her time in the city and is grateful to have returned to the county and have the opportunity to live in Manheim. “Manheim is really interesting in terms of being a strong community,” Warn remarked. Born and raised in New York, Warn is also glad to be located somewhat closer to her parents, who still reside there. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, hiking, and traveling. Warn graduated from Wittenburg University with a bachelor’s degree in history, earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago, and graduated from Chicago Lutheran Seminary. She also served in Sudan with Mennonite Central Committee from 1988 to 1991. “Living in another country - especially a Muslim country - helped me to think deeply about my faith and what it means to be a Christian,” said Warn as she recalled her time in Sudan and how it influenced her decision to later go on to seminary.
