SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Being Hands And Feet In Lititz im Zimmerman, who founded City Gate with her husband, Brian, gestured around the organization’s Lititz location at 101 N. Broad St., and noted that the space is decorated to resemble a comfortable living room or coffee shop, with books, coffee, and water available. “We are trying to create a place where community can come together. Not everyone is going to go to a church, but this small coffee shop is less intimidating,” said Zimmerman. John Knudson, pastor of LifeSpring Fellowship in Lititz, which has partnered with City Gate, echoed Zimmerman’s words. “Maybe (someone) has had a bad church experience. This (location) is unexpected and much more comfortable (than a church), so people might be quicker to open up,” he offered. The Zimmermans first envisioned a City Gate location in Lancaster city in 2006. The pair was

training in a prayer ministry, and they felt a call from God to take what they were learning outside the church walls. In 2007, the Zimmermans rented a basement room in a former Lancaster hotel. “We started meeting with the homeless,” said Zimmerman. “Every Friday night, we had three or four hours of just prayer and worship, and we were seeing amazing things happen,” said Zimmerman. “We were connecting with the community.” The Zimmermans focused on prayer and service. Shortly after the first building in the Lancaster city was condemned, Zimmerman said she felt God calling her to take a drive on Duke Street in Lancaster. She came across a new rental property that became the ministry’s next downtown location. “That’s what happens,” said Zimmerman. “God provides buildings and finances every time we move to a new location.” God also provided Mary Nickliss to oversee the Lititz location, which opened in 2020. A Pumpkin Contest With A Twist
Landis Homes Group Supports Woods And Wetlands BY ANN MEAD ASH
Following the development of the South Campus of Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, about a decade ago, a group of residents became involved in the preservation of 10 acres of land - four acres called Leaman Woods and another approximately six acres of floodplain. See Landis Homes pg 4
The Lititz Public Library is looking for pumpkins decorated to reflect literary topics and book characters.
To get into the spirit of fall, the Lititz Public Library is holding a virtual pumpkin decorating contest with a twist. The library is asking area residents to decorate or carve a pumpkin to look like a favorite book character or decorate the pumpkin to look funny, scary, or unique. The contest is open to people of all ages. Entries will be grouped into age categories of children 12 and under, teens ages 13 to 18, and adults over 18. Pumpkins may be decorated by painting, bedazzling, adding pasted paper, or carving. Creativity is encouraged. Each entry should include a nameplate with

City Gate from pg 1 Zimmerman noted that City Gate locations give local churches an opportunity to step into the community. “We love the church, but when you’re in a church, you are ministering to people in the church,” she said. “We felt a call from God to do that on the street.” Knudson agreed. “We are excited about the opportunity to do that,” he said. “I believe in working

together as the body of Christ. We have the same mission, and I believe God has commissioned us.” According to Zimmerman, each City Gate location has developed its own unique offering to the surrounding community. “The Lititz (location) has become big in the marketplace (here),” she noted. “There are several prayer times where businessmen and women are coming together to
pray for Lititz businesses, and we hear many testimonies from business owners. We are a place where the church can be (Christ’s) hands and feet in the public square,” said Zimmerman. Comfort Food For A Cause BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Hearts will be warmed by fellowship and tummies will be warmed by comfort food when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church holds a potpie dinner. The dinner will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. Dinner will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out.
A potpie dinner will benefit mission trips like this one to Kentucky.
“It’s going to be a sit-down dinner in our fellowship hall,” said Gail Ruhl, who is a coordinator of the church’s Mission Outreach Team. “We will also have meals available to go if people want to do that, or they can purchase potpie in quart containers to take home.” Along with potpie, the meal will include green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, a homemade dessert and a beverage. There are separate prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free. Proceeds from the dinner will support a mission trip that church members will take in June of 2022. “We are still planning the destination,” Ruhl noted, adding that they are looking for destinations that may need extra volunteers due to devastation from extreme weather events. “We’re definitely going. We’re just not sure where yet.” Ruhl and her husband have been the coordinators of the

Mission Outreach Team for 13 years. Over the years, they have taken multigenerational groups throughout much of the United States. “We’ve gone as far out as Oklahoma, and the farthest south we’ve gone is Lumberton, North Carolina,” she remarked. “We’ve been to Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland.” The group was unable to take a trip in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic. Ruhl said the potpie dinner provides the church not only with an opportunity to serve good food, but also with the chance to connect with the community.
“We make really great potpie,” she stated. “Just come and enjoy the food, visit with friends and family, socialize and enjoy the fellowship. You can talk to people at our church about the church or inquire about our mission trips. It’s a very family-oriented dinner. We love when families come and bring their kiddos. It’s a nice, relaxing atmosphere.” For more information on the dinner, visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call the church at 717-665-3400. Ruhl noted that any changes or updates determined by changing CDC guidelines will be posted on the website.

“The Friends of the Woods and Wetlands look for ways to help maintain and use the woods and wetlands,” said Linford Good, community design specialist with Landis Communities. The 50-member group works in several areas of environmental concern. The woods were originally farmland, and the flood plain was meadow used for grazing cattle. Sediment was removed from the flood plain in exchange for storm water management credits that were used in developing land outside the flood plain. “We were able to build more homes on land that would otherwise have been used for storm water retention,” explained Good. The Friends of the Woods and Wetlands formed a few years after the hybrid homes on the campus were built. Seeking to appreciate the blessings of the Landis Homes environment, the group set out to support the balance of the environment so that residents and visitors could enjoy the natural beauty. Good noted that one of the first jobs of the group members was to remove invasive plants, handpulling garlic mustard, burning bush, and privet hedge, and planting native plants and trees, especially pawpaws. “In the flood plain it is a continuous (job) to keep invasives out,” explained Good, who noted that the Friends work with Land Studies, a professional organization in Lititz. Within the group are subgroups that engage in activities to support or encourage flora and fauna in the area. “One group is interested in planting milkweed to attract

A segment is also working to track frogs, turtles, snakes, and other wetland creatures as they move into the area. Water quality is also important to the Friends. Kurtz Run, a spring-fed brook, runs through the campus and into the Conestoga Creek. Friends volunteer to work with the Lancaster County Conservation District to monitor water quality. “They are trying to start a Kurtz Run Watershed Association to help with projects,” said Good. Good noted that the organization gives residents with the knowledge and passion the chance to preserve the area for the future. “By restoring these areas, it provided an opportunity for residents to volunteer in things they’re interested in, like natural habitats,” said Good. Landis Homes, an affiliate of Landis Communities, is home to 850 residents living in cottage, apartment, and hybrid homes, as well as in personal care and health care.
