Making Shakespeare Modern LMHS To Stage “Romeo and Juliet” By Ann Mead Ash

When director Dean Sauder chose “Romeo and Juliet” as the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) fall play, he wanted to present the show to audiences who may have never seen the entire play, and he set it in the present with contemporary scenes of students in high school using cellphones. Megan Esch, who plays the Nurse, has caught Sauder’s vision. “I feel a lot of people (think) Shakespeare is old and boring, but a lot of this show is really funny,” she said. “I want people who come to see it to have a new understanding of Shakespeare.” “Romeo and Juliet” will be staged at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17; Friday, Oct. 18; and Saturday, Oct. 19. Warwick’s prolific offense was held mostly in check by the Bulldogs as they tallied 228 yards in total offense after averaging more than double that throughout the season. Still, they almost pulled off the comeback victory after falling behind 14-0 in the first half. Brady Gibble scored the first points of the game on a 13-yard pitch and catch from quarterback Kaleb Brown in the opening quarter for a 7-0 Wilson lead that held through to the second. A 46-yard scoring run by Gavin Lenart increased the lead to 14-0 by halftime, but Warwick was anything but finished. Warwick dominated on defense holding the Black Knights to only three shots on goal and four corners on the night. Meanwhile, the Warwick offense was able to generate 16 corners and pepper Alexa Pitts with 14 shots. BOYS’ SOCCER Warwick’s boys’ soccer team also closed out their regular season with a win and a loss as they dropped a 3-0 game versus Hempfield on Monday and then defeated Cedar Crest 2-0 on Wednesday. That placed Warwick (7-3) in second place behind Manheim Township (9-1) in Section One. The Warriors opened the L-L League playoffs on Saturday where they defeated Cocalico 1-1 (4-2 PKs) in the

quarterfinals. The Eagles struck first in the 24th minute of play when Lucas Martin took an Aaron Weitzel pass in front of the net and slipped a shot past Warwick keeper Boston Libhart for the 1-0 Cocalico lead. The score remained through the second half until Jake Smith found Drew Schwartz on a pass that he sent into the net for the equalizer in the 65th minute. Neither team scored again through two periods of overtime setting up the penalty kicks where Luke Wealand nailed the game clinching goal. With the victory, Warwick advanced to a semifinal matchup against McCaskey which was held on Tuesday. Earlier in the week the Warriors ran into a wall when they met up with Hempfield on Monday and the Black Knight’s defense completely shut down the Warwick offense. While the Warriors did manage four shots on goal, they couldn’t make any stick as the Knights scored once in the first

half and twice in the second for the victory. Versus Cedar Crest on Wednesday the odds turned in Warwick’s favor as both Kole Blauch (4:00) and Jacob Smith (35:00) scored in the first half of the 2-0 shutout. Trey George had an assist as well. GIRLS’ SOCCER At 4-5-1 overall, the girls’ team ended their season in fourth place of Section One and were 17th in the District Three power rankings with the top 16 moving on to the PIAA District Three Championships. The lady Warriors finished out the season with a 20 loss to Garden Spot last Monday and a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Garden Spot on Wednesday. In a closely contested game versus the Black Knights, it was Jessica Weinholdt who did the Warriors in with two goals in the first half of a game where Hempfield managed six shots on goal to Warwick’s four. Kendall Morgan made two saves for Warwick

and Carlie Martin turned away one on the night. In Wednesday’s matchup with the Falcons, the two teams played to a scoreless tie at halftime before Caroline Manbeck scored the only goal that was needed in the 42nd minute. In spite of the loss Warwick outshot Cedar Crest 11-3 and held a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks. CROSS COUNTRY Both the Warwick boys and girls ran the final meet of the regular season at home last Tuesday against Solanco and Conestoga Valley with the boys winning both races and the girls splitting. Finishing in third place in Section One at 8-2, the boys defeated Solanco 19-39 and Conestoga Valley 20-36 as Warwick’s Jeremy Bell finished first overall with a time of 17:17. Parker Keares (4th, 17:35), Jeremiah Hendrix (5th, 17:36), Ryan Horner (6th, 17:48), J. H. Mertz (8th, 17:52), and Josh Wenger (14th, 18:54) all finished in

matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Leads in the tragic tale of star-crossed lovers from feuding families will include Noah Schnabel as Romeo and Noelle Stringer as Juliet. Josiah Esch will play Friar Lawrence. Cast members began working on memorizing their lines early in the summer, and Noah said he was concerned that audiences might be confused by the original Shakespearean dialogue in a modern setting. However, once rehearsals began, the depth of the subject matter moved to the forefront. “A lot of wrong choices are made,” noted Megan, adding that life lessons for both children and parents are contained in the script. “Don’t shut your children down when they want to talk,” she said. “Don’t do stuff behind your parents’ backs. This is an example of how tragically wrong that can go.” Josiah agreed. “(Romeo and Juliet’s) problems snowball throughout the

Noah said that overall, the tragedy has been a challenge to stage but that he feels a sense of accomplishment. “When a scene is over, it’s a relief … you’re tired,” he said. “It was really tough, but I am glad I did it.” Tickets for the play may be purchased

from pg 1 “Every woman has a story,” said Strohecker. “The event is about sharing stories,” added Christens-Persaud. Both women emphasized that the group welcomes each woman “where she is, as she is.” “It’s about women sharing their stories to relate to other women in the audience,” said Strohecker, who noted that attendees need not have a tattoo. Christens-Persaud added that the concept involves women talking about experiences and relying on each other to understand. Friedrichs will serve as master of ceremonies, but she will also speak briefly in a talk based on the book “Uninvited” by Lysa TerKeurst. “Have you ever walked into a room full of women and felt all alone?” asked Strohecker. “We all know that feeling,” added Christens-Persaud. Strohecker emphasized that the group wants women who attend to feel exactly the opposite. “We want every woman who walks in there to feel invited,” she said. “We want to embrace women from all walks of life,” said Christens-Persaud. “We will be … intentional about that.” More than 80 women attended last year’s event, and organizers hope more will join them this year. There is a nominal cost to attend the event. Readers who would like to attend may register by searching for “Story Marks” at www.eventbrite.com. show,” he said, warning, “Problems can snowball if you don’t address them.” The cast members are also having fun preparing to stage the show, which will be presented in a canyon format, with the audience on stage with the actors. “The nurse is an extreme character,” explained Megan. “She doesn’t have a setting between really happy and really upset, so I have to get into the character before I enter the scene and then hold an extreme emotion during the dialogue.” “I am getting really immersed in the play,” said Josiah. “We get to know the play really well, and I find it fun personally (because) I like learning the motivations of characters and how that affects the timeline of events.” The small cast, which includes fewer than 20 students, has meant the actors and crew have had a chance to develop camaraderie. “It’s fun to interact with each other on and off stage,” said Megan. “We are pretty tight knit.”
