According to Kirsten Crosby-Blose, director of children’s ministries at Lititz Church of the Brethren (COB), and Eric Landram, lead pastor, the Trunk or Treat that will be held at the church this year is a perfect fit for sponsorship by The Tree House, a custom-made playground that will provide fun activities for children of all abilities. Plans are being finalized for The Tree House to be built behind the church, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. “Some of the trunks will meet the Teal Pumpkin specifications,” said Crosby-Blose. “(Participants) are encouraged to think outside the candy aisle and to order from food allergy-friendly brands or choose candies that don’t use eggs, nuts, milk, or wheat.” The Teal Pumpkin Project advocates for offering allergen-free treats for Halloween.
Up to 25 decorated trunks will line the parking lot at Lititz Church of the Brethren when The Tree House sponsors a Trunk or Treat on Oct. 24, beginning at 5:30 p.m. theme of the playground.” The Trunk or Treat will be held in the parking lot behind the church on

McCracken Sets Record in Win over Wilson by Vaughn Brown
If you want to be the best, then you have to beat the best and that is just what Warwick did Friday night when powerhouse Wilson came to town. Behind an historic night by sophomore quarterback Joey McCracken, who set the LancasterLebanon League single-game passing record with 530 yards and five touchdowns, the Warriors sent the Bulldogs packing with a 38-12 victory and took over first place in Section One in the process. When you throw five touchdowns and the shortest is for 53-yards, you know things are going your way. Making his first varsity start, McCracken lit up the scoreboard in the first quarter when he connected with Nick Fucci on a 53-yard score and again in the second with a 59-yard strike to Conor Adams for a 14-0 lead. Not known as a team that gives up, the Bulldogs responded with two unanswered touchdowns of their own, both passes from quarterback Photo by Mark Palczewski Anthony Futrick to Brady Gibble, the The Warriors’ Hunter Deibler sets up to block Wilson’s Jeff Colacin during Warwick’s 38-12 Home- first for 42 yards and the second for 22 coming win last Friday. yards. Deciding to go for the twopoint conversion due to a missed PAT on the first score, Wilson couldn’t convert and were still behind 14-12. With the offense firing on all cylinders Warwick in turn drove 67 yards on the final possession of the half, fueled by a 52-yard pitch-andcatch from McCracken to Haydn Rucci. Pietro Elliott then nailed a 32-yard field goal as time ran out for the 17-12 lead. “Kids played a great game,” stated head coach Bob Locker. “Wilson played man coverage at times and our WR’s beat the coverage - Joey made throws.” In all, Wilson didn’t play poorly putting up 356 yards of offense, 211 through the air and 145 on the ground, but the Warwick defense withstood the pressure and made some big plays including two interceptions, three punts, and forcing three turnovers-on-downs. None resonated louder than in the third quarter when, after expanding the lead to Photo by Mark Palczewski 24-12 on an 85-yard touchdown catch Warwick’s Conor Adams takes a pass 59 yards for a touchdown during the Warriors’ 38-12 by Rucci, Justin Gerhart made a huge stop at the Warwick one-yard line on Homecoming victory last Friday.
fourth down after Wilson’s drive began at the Warwick 29-yard line following a 36-yard kick return. Throwing from his own end zone on the next play, McCracken hit Trey Glass who streaked down field for a 99-yard score giving Warwick a commanding 31-12 lead. Glass also caught an 85-yard strike from McCracken later in the quarter for the final score of the game. “Defense played well,” added Locker. “The fourth down stop was huge (and) the 99-yard pass to Glass was outstanding. It took the wind out of their sails.” Now sitting alone atop the section at 4-1 with Manheim Township (3-1) and Wilson (3-1) tied for second place, all the Warriors have to do to be co-champs at the very least is win their next two games. “We control our fate for a share of the section - we need to stay focused and work hard,” Locker stated. FIELD HOCKEY Warwick played a spirited but lopsided game against Penn Manor last Tuesday night in which the lady Warriors gave up two goals in each half in the 4-0 defeat. It was Catie Brubaker, however that stood strong for Warwick as the keeper was peppered with 20 shots on goal but turned away 16 of them. It was the second game of the week that helped the girls out as they not only scored a 2-1 win over Hempfield, but also clinched the final spot in the League Playoffs that began this week. Julia Eshelman deflected a Caitlyn Grodzicki shot into the back of the cage with 1:19 gone from the second half before Kate Ayers tied the game on a successful penalty shot with
21:39 to go in regulation. Looking to take the lead, Hempfield scored again with 10:00 on the clock, but had the goal waved off and then gave up the game winner as Warwick transitioned to the Knight’s end where Emily Behn put the final score across. SOCCER Warwick’s girls ended their season last week by splitting the final two games with a 3-0 loss to Hempfield and a 1-0 win over Cedar Crest. The lady Warriors (2-6-2, 4-9-2) ended up in fifth place in Section One. Giving up one goal in the first half and two in the second against the Knights, Warwick’s Kendall Morgan made four saves on seven shots on the night. Hempfield earned a five to one advantage in corners while holding Warwick to three shots on offense. After playing 55 minutes of scoreless soccer last Wednesday at home versus Cedar Crest, Mickayla Harris found a way past Falcon’s keeper Desiree Leffler for the only goal that was needed. Leffler was peppered by six Warwick shots on goal while Morgan turned away three for the lady Warriors who ended the season on a good note with the one goal victory. In similar fashion, the boys also split their final two games of the regular season with a 2-1 loss to Hempfield last Monday followed by a 2-1 victory over Cedar Crest. However, Warwick (7-3, 11-3) finished the season as Section One co-champions with Manheim Township (7-3, 12-3) which defeated Penn Manor (1-8, 5-10) 3-1 in the final game of the season on Thursday night. As a result, the Streaks also earned the first-place seed from Section One

Warwick’s defense held the Braves to only three shots on goal while the offense generated five against keeper Nehemiah Glick who stopped four. CROSS COUNTRY In a rare, two meet week the Warwick cross country teams took on Solanco in a dual meet on Tuesday and then returned to the course on Thursday for a tri-meet with Manheim Township and Ephrata. With a 15-49 win over the Mares, the lady Warriors then lost to the Blue Streaks 28-30 and the Mounts 26-29 while the boys won the Section One championship with an 18-47 win over the Golden Mules, a 27-28 victory over the Streaks, and a 26-29 defeat of the Mounts. The boys finished the season with a 9-1 record while both Hempfield (8-2) and Manheim Township (8-2) tied for second place. Their one-point victory over the Streaks ensured them of the title outright while a loss would have meant sharing with Manheim Township. Both teams placed four runners in the top ten and while MT’s Evan Dorenkamp finished first overall with a time of 16:21, it was Connor Shield’s two second advantage over Ian Miller that spelled the difference in the meet. Shields finished third with a time of 16:26 and Miller placed fourth in 16:28. Had Miller finished ahead of Shields the score would have tipped in MT’s favor and the two teams would be tied for first place. Noah Martin (5th, 16:38), Parker Keares (6th, 17:15) and Jeremy Bell (7th, 17:16) crossed after Miller and represented the final scores for Warwick while Drew Sassaman (8th, 17:27), Keven Perez (10th, 17:42) and Tyler Stevens (11th, 17:47) finished scoring for the Streaks. On a hot and humid Monday night last week, the Warriors hosted the Black Knights who were looking to mix things up in the section race. Scoring two unanswered goals over a stretch of 54 minutes that spanned both halves, Hempfield overpowered Warwick for the win. After going down 1-0 in the 24th Photo by Mark Palczewski minute, Warwick’s Robbie Heckman Warwick’s Hayden Rucci catches a touchdown pass over Wilson’s had an opportunity to tie the game Kaleb Brown during the Warriors’ 38-12 Homecoming win last early in the second half when his shot was deflected up by keeper Tristan Friday.

Green. A Black Knight defender was able to clear the rebound however before the attacking Warriors could capitalize. In the 76th minute Ryan Hepler added an insurance goal to put Hempfield up 2-0 before Jacob Smith was able to put Warwick on the board with only 3.5 seconds remaining in the match. Drew Stief made five saves in goal for Warwick. Against Cedar Crest on Thursday Heckman scored in the 55th minute and Smith in the 66th after a scoreless first half to secure the win for Warwick. Josh Donnachie made it interesting for the Warriors when he beat Stief for the Falcon’s lone goal, but Cedar Crest’s other three shots were turned away by the Warrior keeper. Dropping out of contention for second place in Section One with their two close losses, the girls landed in third place with a record of 7-3 while Elizabethtown (10-0) won the title and Cedar Crest (8-2), Hempfield (8-2), and Manheim Township (8-2) tied for second. Anna Martin and Caitlyn Wagner finished third and fourth overall with respective times of 19:55 and 19:57 to lead the lady Warriors while Sophia Nau finished seventh in 20:33, and Alexa Wenger came in 12th at 21:42. However, it was the Streak’s trio of Emma Dieterle (13th, 21:47), Kyra Dean (14th, 21:59), and Cecelia Walker (15th, 22:04) that sealed the deal as all three displaced Clara Ford (19th, 23:20) who represented the final score for Warwick. Ephrata placed three in the top ten including Mary Campbell who finished first in 19:39 and Alyssa Fedorshak who was second with a time of 19:43 on the way to victory over Warwick. Rounding out the field for the Warriors were Jill Colebert (22nd, 23:41), Isa Velez (29th, 25:222), Willow Forney (30th, 25:24), Chloe Nightengale (31st, 25:26), Mariel Deibert (32nd, 25:50), Lindsey Cammauf (33rd, 26:08), Morgan Leakway (35th, 26:17), Mackenzie Rohrer (36th, 26:20), Abby Smith (38th, 27:32), Lexie Kellogg (39th, 28:45), Alyssa Eberly (41st, 29:48), Montana Heil (42nd, 30:11), and Katy Kramer (44th, 32:32). VOLLEYBALL With two matches last week, a 3-0 loss to Hempfield and a 3-1 loss to Manheim Township, the Warwick girls only had two remaining on the regular season as of Thursday. After the Manheim Township match they were 4-6, 4-8 and sat in fifth place in Section One. Taking on powerhouse Hempfield last Tuesday, the girls tallied one ace by Marissa Treibley, two kills by Jackie Barilar and eight digs and three blocks from Rachall Adams. Hempfield won 25-13, 25-6, and 25-15. On Thursday the lady Warriors faced off Manheim Township and fell behind 2-0 but surged in the third and forced the match to a fourth game by winning 25-21. Riding the momentum, Warwick took the Streaks deep before falling 25-23. Adams recorded nine kills and a block while Barilar served up three aces, Ashley Glouner had 21 digs and Allison Forsythe assisted on 21.

Lititz Bikeworks from pg 1 Cyclocross is a form of bicycle racing with European roots that might be best compared to a Tough Mudder on bikes. The sport is off-road, often twists through grassy fields, and always includes obstacles. Some obstacles riders can ride through or over, like log crossings, sharply pitched but short hills, or rock gardens. Some will cause the riders to dismount their bikes and carry them over barriers or up run-ups. The Rock Garden has a sampling of all of these attributes, but riders of all levels can navigate the course without

having to dismount their bikes or attempt log crossings. “When we were designing the course, we thought lots about our own families,” explained Mark. “ We wanted to create something we could all do, from kids to parents and on to grandparents. That’s why the course splits into three sections.” “While everyone gets to enjoy the flowing, grassy section of the course, more experienced riders and racers can opt to explore the expert section, featuring some more technical aspects, including some intense rocky segments that will appeal to mountain bikers,” Mark noted. “The intermediate section offers log crossings and some more mild rock gardens. The beginner section just sticks to the fun, flowy stuff and is perfect for new riders.” Rebecca added, “Because races loop through fields on shorter, closed courses, spectators can typically see all of the action, rather than just watching road riders fly by.” “Until now, those interested in the sport needed to enter a race in order to experience it,” Rebecca explained. “Cyclocross courses just don’t tend to exist for longer than the weekend of the race. Promoters would build up a course on borrowed land and then tear it down.” There are no plans to tear down The Rock Garden, which was designed with input from the Susquehanna Area Mountain Biking Association (SAMBA). Volunteers from SAMBA teamed with Lititz Bikeworks employees and community volunteers to physically create the course. Currently, the course is open during the bike shop’s hours, which are Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The shop is closed on Tuesdays. the bike shop, stop into the shop to sign a waiver of liability, and then ride their bikes over to the course. Mountain bikes and cyclocross bikes will work best. Experienced riders who want to hone their skills are invited to join the shop’s weekly Thursday night ride. Mark, a licensed cyclocross racer, leads the free training ride. One of the Branles’ goals from the outset was to use the course to create opportunities for local children to hone their biking skills. When Seth Gunderson from 717Cycling, an amateur cycling team with roots in York and Lancaster counties, approached the pair about hosting a Junior Cyclocross Clinic on the course, the answer was an emphatic yes. “Our focus with the 717Juniors program is to expose more kids and juniors to the joy of riding a bike (and) the confidence that comes with accomplishing difficult tasks and to foster a lifelong love of a healthy, sustainable, athletic lifestyle,” says Gunderson. The clinics, which are open to riders ages 8 to 17, began in August and take place on Fridays at 6 p.m. No previous cyclocross experience is necessary, and, in fact, most of the attendees are brand new to the sport. Gunderson provides families with information on upcoming cyclocross races and even offers to cover registration fees and license fees for children willing to commit to at least four races. Youths who would like to participate but whose bikes are not in the best condition can borrow bikes from both Lititz Bikeworks and 717Juniors to use during practice and at races for no charge. “Our main objective with this clinic isn’t to be the winningest team, although we certainly want to provide kids with all the tools they need to win,” added Rebecca. “The main goal is to provide every child the opportunity to participate, without being a financial stressor for parents.” Lititz Bikeworks will team up with Troeg’s Independent Brewing to host Troegenator Cross at The Rock Garden on Saturday, Oct. 27. The race, designated as the Pennsylvania State Cyclocross Championships, will be the course’s inaugural competitive event. Several hundred racers are expected to attend, with races beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Race categories will be offered for beginner adults; elite males and females; masters racers in their 60s, 70s, and 80s; and juniors ages 9 to 17. Registration fees vary depending on the racer category, as do prizes. The top five elite male and female riders will earn cash awards. Elite women will race at 1:30 p.m., with the men following at 2:30 p.m.
Spectators are encouraged to attend. Lancaster’s BUZZ food truck will be on-site starting at 7:30 a.m., serving up coffee and breakfast sandwiches. For lunch, Gravie Kitchen and Commons will offer Oktoberfest-themed items. There could also be some musical surprises throughout the day. A race announcer will keep spectators abreast of all the action, and bike-themed vendors will show the latest and greatest
bicycle goods. The bike shop itself will have its own tent packed with clearance bikes, apparel, and accessories. Those wishing to participate in the race can register at www.bikereg.com/troegenator -cross. Lititz Bikeworks is located at 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., Suite 11, Lititz. The shop can be reached at 717-553-7997, or readers may visit www.intercoursebike works.com.

The Branles knew that they wanted Lititz Bikeworks to offer all of the standard services customers expect from a bike shop, such as selling and servicing bikes. They also wanted to encourage riders of all ages and experience levels to ride, right at the shop, with no worries about traffic. That’s where the idea of a cyclocross course came into play. According to the Branles, there are no other bike shops on the East Coast that have their own cyclocross courses that are open year-round, free to the community at large.

Also, visitors will experience the brand new kitchens, dining spaces and living areas for the skilled nursing area. These spaces showcase United Zion’s transition to the neighborhood model, where there is a kitchen, dining room and living space for each small group of residents. These kitchens allow for residents and team members to work together to create special dishes and to keep meal times intimate. The new living spaces offer space for residents to enjoy small group activities from crafting to Wii Bowling. Attendees may also explore independent living options at United Zion. Tours of the newly built Garden and Vista apartments as well as both one-bedroom and two-bedroom cottages will be offered. Personal care rooms and suites, where supportive services are provided to help residents with daily living activities, will also be open for visitors to view. The Oct. 20 event will feature homemade foods from local farmers and providers. For more information, readers may visit www.uzrc.org or contact Megan Weiss at mweiss@uzrc.org.
A new wing at United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) was recently completed. This area houses the brand new kitchen, dining and living spaces for the health care center expansion. UZRC will host an open house on Saturday, Oct. 20.
