Making History Fun Lititz Foundation To Host Uncharted Lancaster BY ANN MEAD ASH
ccording to Adam Zurn, his website, Uncharted Lancaster, is known for two things. “One side is history, where I highlight fascinating local history people might not be familiar with,� he said. “The other side is an adventure side.� Zurn’s adventures may end with plastic gold coins or fake gems, but he knows it is the excitement of deciphering clues to be the first to unlock the riddles that really thrills adventurers. On Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1:30 p.m., Zurn will present “Ghost Stories and Tales of Adventure With Uncharted Lancaster� via Zoom as the guest of the Lititz Historical Foundation. Zurn plans to share local legends and horrific tales associated with the River Hills area of Lancaster County, which is now partially owned by the Lancaster

Conservancy and is home to Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve. Zurn, who lives in the southern part of the county, will share his knowledge of the River Hills area near the Susquehanna River. “We have gorges and ravines and hills to climb,� he said, noting that Shenks Ferry in Conestoga Township was once a thriving village. “Today it is nothing but forest,� Zurn stated, adding that the area is now owned by the Lancaster Conservancy. “It was a vibrant community.� Zurn said that from the mid-1800s until the 1940s, Shenks Ferry included a school, a church, a post office, and lots of houses. “There was a ferry crossing (at the Susquehanna River) there,� shared Zurn. “Later they dredged coal from the Susquehanna River.� According to Zurn, the operation removed coal dust that had washed down from the coal regions after decades of coal mining from the river. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes changed the riverbed, making the dredging operation obsolete.

Forgotten Friend Reptile Shows Go Virtual Scholarship Fund Can Help Provide Programs For Students BY ANN MEAD ASH
“The kids get to meet some of the same animals (as a live show), but they get to meet some different animals as well,� said Jesse Rothacker, founder and president of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary in Manheim, who pointed out that Gila monsters have been part of all the virtual programs the organization
has done since COVID-19 restrictions kept him from doing live shows. Rothacker sees benefits in the change. “We don’t usually bring venomous lizards, but now that we’re doing it virtually, (students) can be up close to the nose of a Gila monster and actually see the beady texture of their skin without liability or concern for the schools or teachers.� To allow Rothacker to bring more information

The two-sided, flippable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with direct-toconsumer offerings increasing in number and options. Forgotten Friend from pg 1 because so many of the schools are trying to figure out day to day,” he said. “We want to alleviate some costs by offering free or discounted programs through our scholarship fund.” Rothacker explained that partial scholarships could lower the cost of a program significantly. According to Rothacker, virtual shows are similar to live shows, but they offer an additional multimedia presentation. Different programs are developed for high school and college-age students. “I take a program and present it differently to each audience,” said Rothacker. “With elementary or preschool, it is heavier on interactive hand motions and repeating words.” For older students, Rothacker may tackle weightier subjects. The saga Rothacker calls “Our Virtual Journey” began when the state was shut down by COVID-19 restrictions in March. “May through September is our main season for programs,” said Rothacker, who noted that of 200 yearly shows, about 150 occur in spring and summer. “Our season was crushed,” he said.
The situation sent Rothacker on a mission to provide contact-free safe options that will give the schools some of the tools they need for environmental science supplements that include classroom visitors. Rothacker was initially hesitant to go virtual, but he moved forward, investing in lighting, a greenscreen, and other electronic equipment, and he soon began to recognize the power of virtual presentations. “With alligators, they have more than a thousand sensory organs that look like little black dots on their faces and tongues,” he said. “In person, the closest our audience gets is about 6 feet, but (virtually) when we do a closeup, they can see the little black dots.” Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit reptile rescue and education group that has been based in Lancaster County since 2004. The presentation was originally scheduled on March 14, but COVID-19 restrictions resulted in postponing the event more than once. “Finally, Cory (Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation), decided to do it via Zoom,” Zurn said. “Since it is (being held) pretty close to Halloween, I will include some ghost stories and spooky legends.” One such event that occurred in River Hills was an enormous explosion that shattered windows more than a mile away. “On June 9, 1906, at 12:42 p.m., a dynamite factory (C. R. McAfee Powder & Oil Co.) exploded at Shenks Ferry,” said Zurn. The blast, which involved about 2,500 pounds of dynamite, blew up a building known as the punch house, which is where the dynamite was placed in paper tubes to be packed in 50-pound wooden

Rothacker reported that the fund was initiated by grants from Refreshing Mountain Camp and Ephrata National Bank. Rothacker explained that as a nonprofit that serves nonprofits, the scholarship fund could benefit organizations such as schools, churches, and Scouting groups, for which the up to $400 pricetag of a Forgotten Friends program could be an issue. “We aren’t $1,000, but we aren’t $50,” said Rothacker, who noted that the main revenue source for the rescue is programming. “We have so many good groups that want to host our programs,” he said. Entering the Bench Mark facility on East Liberty Street in Lancaster is a little like entering a secret club. A short hallway leads to a door that opens into a room filled with serious weightlifting equipment. The brightly colored walls are covered with graffitilike artwork paying homage to superheroes. According to founder and executive director Will Kiefer, the design is intentional. “We filled the space with color because we want it to be energetic,â€? said Kiefer. “We want it to be something that for (students who participate) feels very special,â€? he added, noting that the organization serves those ages 14 to 24. Most students are referred by a probation officer, therapist, or guidance counselor. Kiefer added that many students who come to Bench Mark to exercise are often caring for younger siblings at home. “When they come here, they have a place of respite ‌ just to be out and exercising,â€? he said. Kiefer keeps the fridge stocked, and there are videos and planned discussions. “Sometimes kids need a space that’s cool to connect with positive people,â€? he said. “ We have almost everything a kid could want to do workout-wise.â€? However, according to Kiefer, Bench Mark is much more than a place to lift weights. “(When students) come in, they see the gym, but what they don’t see right away at the front of the gym are these two computers.â€? The computers are there because Bench Mark helps students with resume writing and job searching for both part-time and full-time jobs. “They walk right past (the computers), and that’s fine with us, but as

we work with them (we) transition from ‘Let’s just exercise together’ to ‘Let’s talk about what you want to do.’� At the request of Lancaster’s probation department, Bench Mark launched Strength Based Skill Building (SBSB) in 2018. Transportation to the program is provided within a 12-mile radius. “A judge will look at a kid and say, ‘I think you will benefit from this type of fitness-based mentoring,’� said Kiefer, who developed the six-month program that covers foundational principles including legal life skills, common sense money fundamentals, mindfulness to engage focus, fitness, and what Kiefer calls “authentic communication.� “That’s teaching them to communicate in ways they haven’t before,� explained Kiefer. Bench Mark also offers a Student Leadership Program (SLP), which teaches students how to run the gym. The trainees meet weekly to learn to handle daily responsibilities and help students determine goals. “They have to show up at every meeting, commit to a regular work schedule, and be a resource to students,� said Kiefer. John Deslippe, who recently gradu-
ated from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, completed SLP and works at Bench Mark. He said that working there gives him a chance to give back. “When I was a student, it was an outlet with positive role models,� he said. “I learned how to work out and how to use working out as a way to blow off steam.� Bench Mark has planned an unusual fundraiser for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25. The event will combine a 5K race with bench press reps or pushups. The 5K and pushups may be done virtually. The bench press will be held at Bench Mark, 341 E. Liberty St., Lancaster. Wilamenia Rosa, a household facilitator and certified nursing assistant at Landis Homes, received the Distinguished Service Award as Direct Caregiver of the Year by LeadingAge PA. Rosa was selected from a group of exceptional employees from across the state who were nominated by their organizations. The conference is normally held in June in Hershey, with thousands of attendees from across the state. Powell noted, “Our school is so much more than teachers and students. The school is a place where the body of Christ is alive and well … where each person’s unique gifts are discovered and refined and where faith and virtue come alive. Today we ask God’s blessings on the physical signs of His loving presence.” Powell went on to bless the flags, clocks, and crucifixes with holy water. He also blessed the students and their families. The Most Rev. Ronald Gainer, bishop of the Diocese
of Harrisburg, visited the school to bless it on Sept. 24. The new school boasts 10 classrooms to accommodate kindergarten through eighthgrade students. There is also a computer lab; a multipurpose room, which serves as a cafeteria and a gym; and offices. The St. John Neumann Parish Center has also been renovated to include classrooms for prekindergarten, art, music, library, algebra, and instructional support. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the school offers both in-person and virtual classes, but in-person class sizes are limited to allow for social distancing. Virtual Auction Raises Funds For Hospice Due to the ongoing pandemic and to ensure the health and safety of the community, Hospice & Community Care held its annual Labor Day Auction virtually from Sept. 1 through 15 and raised more than $450,000. The pro-
ceeds will go toward Hospice & Community Care’s work in providing end-of-life care and support to patients and their families, regardless of their ability to pay, according to Bonnie Jess Lopane, vice president and chief develop-
ment officer. During the virtual auction, more than 960 people from across the country placed bids on vacations, jewelry, handmade quilts, art, sports memorabilia, used cars and more. In addition, Hospice & Community Care’s Day of Care Auction,
where participants buy days or weeks of hospice care to be given to families in need, raised more than $31,000. In support of the Virtual Labor Day Auction, Hospice & Community Care’s volunteers helped to transport items and served as social media ambassadors.

When about 90 students and more than 50 spectators gathered along with teachers and administrators outside the new St. John Neumann Catholic School (SJNCS), formerly, St. Anne School, on the morning of Sept. 8, it was with excitement for the future and reverence for the past. New principal Kyla Hockley opened the ceremony of blessing by saying, “Today we honor a new chapter - looking with hope to the future, while anchoring ourselves in the proud tradition of St. Anne School.” St. Anne School, located at St. Anne Church on Liberty Street, Lancaster, was founded in 1924. Discussion surrounding the possibility of relocating had been ongoing for the past two decades. In the fall of 2018, members of St. John Neumann Parish, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, launched a capital campaign for the purpose of building a new education center and renovating the church to allow for additional classrooms. On Feb. 2, 2020, a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new school was held and Wohlsen Construction began to build, following designs by Ted Vedock. On March 19, when the state mandated closing all nonessential businesses, construction stopped
until May 1. A new construction schedule allowed for the school to be ready to open on Sept. 8. “This moment in history comes as a result of trust in God’s plan and God’s time,” said Hockley. “And so we begin by giving our praise and thanksgiving to God.” The Rev. Dan Powell, executive pastor of SJNCS, then led the dedication, saying, “Today we inaugurate this school dedicated to education.” He welcomed Hockley to the SJNCS family and thanked outgoing principal Suzanne Wood. He also acknowledged those in attendance who had made contributions, including representatives of Wohlsen; the Knights of Columbus; St. John Neumann 12532, which donated crucifixes for each classroom; the American Legion, which donated the classroom flags; and Charles Snyder Funeral Home, which donated the classroom clocks. To open the first day in the traditional way, Hockley asked students to come forth to lead a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. “It is fitting that today we celebrate the birthday of our school, and we also celebrate the blessed mother’s birthday,” said Hockley. “St. Anne, our school’s patroness, gave birth to the blessed mother (the mother of Jesus), and today,

Michael Vargo Michael Vargo is the new head of culinary services at United Zion Retirement Community. Vargo has an associate degree from the American Culinary Federation Chef Apprenticeship Program. With 25 years of experience in long-term care food management and over 10 years in restaurant management, Vargo, with the support of ForeFront, is bringing new ideas to the dining experiences at United Zion. He was previously the director of banquets at Eden Resorts & Suites for 13 years. The recent opening of Lexington will give Vargo a chance to put his spin on the menu and culinary service.
