Joe Chesnutt, a member of the Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (CBJO), is thrilled to be planning a concert to honor veterans with professional singing trio America’s Sweethearts. The members of CBJO have been playing together for five years, and the group wanted to hold a concert for veterans at Highland Presbyterian Church, which serves as the band’s home base. “Everything came into place to have the Sweethearts (join us),” said a smiling Chesnutt. Anyone is welcome to attend the free concert, which will be held at Highland, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. The event will feature big band music combined

“This story is powerful because it speaks of people in the Warsaw Ghetto and how they clearly saw what their future was like,” said Bob Ruder. Ruder further explained that Jewish Family Services (JFS) was bringing “Who Will Write Our History,” a film written and directed by Roberta Grossman and executive produced by Nancy Spielberg, to Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Monday, Nov. 11, as a follow-up to the group’s 2018 showing of “GI Jew.” Showings will be at 2 and 7 p.m. According to Ruder, the film goes back and forth in time, interspersing footage from World War II with present-day actors and actresses. “You go from modern to archival, so you have to pay attention,” said Ruder. into an entirely unrelated career. Some people, when they retire, become “gentleman farmers,” with a few acres and a handful of cattle that they can manage with low stress and minimal effort. Jason and his wife, Tay, had a much bigger dream, and they bought a 1,000-acre farm in Louisburg, N.C. The one problem? Neither Jason nor Tay had experience farming. Just as he did with football skills, Jason turned to YouTube to learn what he needed to run a farm. “I grew up with a little bit of a green thumb, did a little bit of landscaping with my father, as far as planting shrubs and trees and flowers here and there, but doing it on a large scale? No, this was totally brand new to me,” Jason explained in an episode of “Growing a Greener World” that was reposted at https://wisdomforlife.org/ firstfruitsfarm. See Ag Banquet pg 9

Group Plans To Take Part In Upcoming Bazaar By Ann Mead Ash

Back in 2005, May Kay Hymes founded a quilting group at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. Hymes has left the area, but she keeps in touch with the quilters by hosting yearly

quilting retreats. The Highland Quilters still meet each Wednesday in Room 204 of the church, and they estimate they have completed approximately 35 quilts per year since the group began working together. In addition to quilts, members of the group make quilted items such as placemats, table runners, and quilted bowl holders that can be used in the microwave. The Sweethearts seek to spread nostalgia and joy through their performances as they look back to the Andrews Sisters and the musical harmony they provided to the nation during a difficult time. One member of America’s Sweethearts has already inspired the members of CBJO. “We decided to make this (concert) a fundraising event for the Wounded Warrior Project,” said Chesnutt, who shared that Sweethearts member Annemarie Rosano held a fundraiser for the organization on her birthday. “One of our tenets is to provide concerts for veterans, but another way to support them is to do a fundraiser for veterans,” said Chesnutt. “America’s Sweethearts kind of pointed us toward Wounded Warrior Project as a worthwhile organization.” There is no admission fee to attend the concert. A freewill offering will be received. Net proceeds from the offering will be donated to Wounded Warrior Project. More information about CBJO may be found at www.corsairbluejazz.org. Olivia Daugherty, who performs regularly with CBJO, will be singing at the event, and Todd Harris, who also sings with the instrumentalists, will perform “The Way You Look Tonight.” Chesnutt said that CBJO members first started working with America’s Sweethearts in 2015, when the two groups appeared together at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Coatesville. “In 2017, we did a big Veterans Day concert with America’s Sweethearts with the big band at Willow Valley,” recalled Chesnutt, who said that the concert was fun for the band and well received by the audience. After starting the season undefeated, Warwick (4-2, 8-2) dropped two straight games to powerhouses Manheim Township (6-0, 10-0) and Wilson (5-1, 9-1). Warwick locked up the fifth seed in Class 5A of the PIAA District Three Football Championships and will take on 12th seeded Mechanicsburg (6-4) at home this Friday. Through the steady rain that fell on the pitch during the majority of the game, Warwick constantly found it difficult to find a way through the Mustang defense that held the Warriors to only two shots on goal. Tabi Seifrit’s goal with 4:59 gone in the first half stood as the lone score of the game. CROSS COUNTRY Two Warwick runners qualified for the PIAA Championship race which will be held this coming Saturday after both the boys’ and girls’ teams competed in the District Three Championship race which was held at Big Spring High School this past Saturday. Anna Martin and Jeremy Bell both made the cut where the top four teams and 20 additional runners qualified to move on. “The boys and girls had a fantastic end to their season at districts,” stated head coach Matt Bomberger. “It was their best team performance of the season and it’s encouraging to end on such a high note. Half of our runners set personal bests yesterday where conditions were fast and ideal.” Martin stood as the only representative of Warwick to medal when she finished 10th overall with a finishing time of 19:01.2 in the Class 3A race in which the team finished 24th overall. 41 Anniversary Sale

Sudan Rebirth Ministry’s (SRM) sixth annual banquet will feature the ambassador of the Republic of South Sudan to the United States, Philip Jada Natana, as the guest speaker. Natana, who has extensive diplomatic experience, was involved during the creation of South Sudan in 2011. He assumed his current post in Washington, D.C., in September 2018. Jacob Guot, founder of SRM, will also be a featured guest at this year’s banquet. The fundraiser will be held Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Celebration Center of First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. The goal of the event is to specifically raise educational scholarship funds for South Sudanese students from kindergarten through college in order to prepare them to be citizens, leaders, and Christians in the world’s newest country. There is a per-person cost to attend. Lancaster organizers enjoy a special relationship with Guot, who is a “Lost Boy of Sudan,” one of thousands who escaped Sudan’s civil war, walked more than 1,000 miles across East Africa, and grew up in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. Guot immigrated to the United States, where he completed his GED, became a citizen, and answered God’s call to serve his people in Bor, South Sudan. A chance meeting with Lancaster’s First United Methodist Church minister Kent Kroehler, who is now retired, eventually led Guot to Lancaster, where he lived for four years. He graduated from

“It’s powerful. It’s something that … the community will find informative and educational. There are some lessons we should never forget.” The film tells the story of historian Emanuel Ringelblum, who led a group of journalists and others who were among the more than 400,000 people trapped in the Warsaw Ghetto by Nazis in 1940. The group determined to keep journals that would tell their story to the people who would come after them. “(The group) journaled and put their journals in tin cans in the basement of a house and covered (them) safely,” said Ruder, who noted that most of those living in the ghetto were exterminated by the Nazis. “People came back and dug through the ruins, and they found these documents hidden away,” he said. “(The journals) were a thorough and comprehensive description of the events that took place in the ghetto.” Ruder explained that JFS of Lancaster is a charitable organization in keeping with Jewish values. The organization helps those in need of food or housing. “We also provide gift cards to grocery stores for people,” said Ruder, who added that JFS also keeps a durable medical equipment loan closet. “If people are in need of walkers or wheelchairs or shower chairs, crutches, and canes, they can call

us and pick out the item, and it’s theirs to use as long as they want with no strings attached,” said Ruder. The organization is nonprofit, nondenominational, and nonsectarian. “We help everybody,” said Ruder. In recent years, JFS expanded its mission to include programs that members believed would interest the greater community. “We have done programs having to do with discrimination and with special needs children in schools … diversity … anti-Semitism … and hate,” said Ruder. For Veterans Day 2018, the group decided to offer a free movie. “‘GI Jews’ gives you goosebumps,” said Ruder. “It was very moving and well received by the community.” Because of the positive response to the film, JFS decided to offer another film this Veterans Day. JFS is grateful to the Jewish Community Alliance of Lancaster for support of the program. Dr. Jack Fischel, founder of the Holocaust Conference at Millersville University, will speak briefly prior to the 2 p.m. showing of the film. According to Ruder, the theater holds 125 attendees. He said that organizers hope to fill the venue for both showings. Although it is free to attend the film, it is necessary to reserve tickets beforehand at www.jfslancaster.org/who-will-write -our-history.html.

In addition to the SRM, Guot founded a separate nonprofit that is overseeing the purchase of land and the building of a civic and religious center in Bor. Guot has recently published his story, “The Lost Boy Is Found, A Lost Boy’s Story of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love.” Guot and Kroehler, along with many friends from First United Methodist Church and the Lancaster area, created SRM to support the education and development of South Sudanese people. SRM is particularly interested in helping students who have been orphaned because of the civil unrest in the country and is committed to serving the promising students of South Sudan. One quilt, made by Sue Esch, went to a veteran many miles away. “I made a quilt for my son, who was injured,” said Esch, who explained that her son was hurt while serving in the Army in Germany about 20 years ago. Her son, who is now in his late 50s, lives in Oregon. This fall, Esch sent him the quilt she had made. “He received it, and he was overjoyed,” reported Esch. “He said, ‘I opened it, and I laid down in the recliner and covered myself up with it.’” The quilt sent to Esch’s son was not the first to bring comfort from Highland to a faraway place. “Our first mission project was in El Salvador,” said Fowler, who recalled that the church first began helping people there by rebuilding homes after an earthquake and later by supporting a school. While mission teams took quilts to comfort those affected by the earthquake, the quilters found additional ways to use their creations to help. “When we had a (church) bazaar, we sold quilts and used money to support the school,”

The group looks forward to taking part in a bazaar that will be held at the Church of the Apostles, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Over the years, the members, who hail from throughout the county, have completed quilts and quilted items for a number of purposes. Just before July 4, about 20 red, white, and blue quilts were given to veterans at Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster, which partners with We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The project began in early 2019 when Highland Quilters member Tricia Hough, who volunteers with hospice, received a donation from Thrivent Lutheran to purchase fabric and batting. “We each had a box of red, white, and blue fabric,” said member Juanita Fowler. “So we used the same fabric with different patterns.” Patterns that were used to create quilts from the patriotic fabric included Pinwheel,

explained Fowler. Quilter Gale Whitworth explained that wherever the church sends members to do mission work, members take quilts with them to give away. Some quilts have traveled to Mars Hill, N.C., while more recently some have gone to West Virginia. During an intergenerational mission trip this year, church members took several quilts and gave them to the families they helped. Linda Matthews noted that funds raised by quilt sales have also benefited local organizations such as the Samaritan Center or the Bridge House. The group is currently working with Jennifer BaberWalker, social worker at Lancaster General Hospital, to create baby quilts for those she aids. Many of the women quilt by machine, working individually at home and helping each other with projects at the church. Shirley Banks does hand quilting on special hoops. Recent new member Megan Stock, who served in the Navy from 1997 to 2005, joined the group after learning of the quilting project for veterans. The group welcomes new members. In 1944, the same year that St. Paul’s was celebrating its 50th anniversary, the steeple was struck by lightning and was rebuilt in its present shape. In 1948, stained glass windows were installed in the sanctuary, and throughout 1960 and 1961, interior renovations were completed at a cost of $22,000. In 1966, additional property was purchased adjacent to the church building for expanded parking. For the church’s 125th anniversary, its membership has been celebrating with special events throughout 2019, including an ice cream social, a homecoming service, community outreach events, and participation in the 18th annual Rothsville Community Day in September. Another special event, A Festival of Music, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 4 p.m. Organized by St. Paul’s organist, Lynn Bare, the event will feature Bare on the organ and Betty Cannell on the piano, as well as a duet by the two. Also, a violin soloist and vocalist will perform. The public is invited to attend and stay for refreshments and fellowship after the program.

Church formed as one of two branches off of the Evangelical Association. The Rothsville congregation, which had been meeting in the Patriotic Order Sons of America Hall at the west end of town, decided to construct a building. A plot of ground was purchased from A. M. Stauter, with additional frontage being donated by John Wolf. The cornerstone was laid on Nov. 27, 1894. Many citizens of Rothsville and the surrounding area contributed toward the building fund, and much of the labor for the new building was provided by congregation members. The completed church was dedicated on May 25 and 26, 1895. Several years later, a movement began with the desire to unite the two divided branches of the church, and in 1922 that union was realized. However, some churches did not enter the merger and reorganized as the Evangelical Congregational Church. Originally, St. Paul’s E.C. was part of the Akron charge, which consisted of the Akron, Brownstown, and Rothsville congregations, until the boundaries were changed in 1942.

In 2014, its first year of operation, the farm produced more than 120,000 pounds of sweet potatoes and more than 10,000 pounds of cucumbers.
