Julie Baum, supporter relations director of Align Life Ministries, is clear on how the organization, which first opened in 1985 as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services, has come to be called Align Life Ministries. “The short answer is, ‘It was God’s idea,’” she said. The long answer is a little more complicated. “First, God taught us the importance of having the word Align in our name,” explained Baum, who added, “When you align your heart and mind with Him, life springs forth.” She also noted that

Women’s Club To Hold Virtual Bingo

Donation Helps Hunger Relief The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) received a donation of $128,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc., to help provide hunger relief to children in 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s summer feeding and youth hunger programs. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping fight childhood hunger in the communities it resides in. As a result of the pandemic, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has seen an

increased need in its community. During the summer of 2021, the food bank served more than 63,000 meals across 63 summer feeding sites in 12 counties with assistance from the Sheetz grant. Funding will also be used for the food bank’s school pantry and backpack programs. This grant enables the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need. the Manheim community,” Sharp explained. The Women’s Club sponsors about 30 children in the Manheim Central School District at Christmas and also offers scholarships for senior girls. “We usually do three scholarships, but last year, we were able to do five because of how well we did with bingo,” she stated. Other projects of the club include supporting The Home on Ferdinand for single mothers and their chil-

dren as well as activities at Pleasant View Retirement Community. The club is hoping to hold an in-person bingo next spring. To purchase tickets for the virtual bingo, visit https://womens-club-of -manheim.square.site/. When the Women’s Club of Manheim hosts bingo on Sunday, Nov. 7, it will have a definite 2021 spin. “ We’re doing a virtual bingo,” said Shayna Sharp. “People will be able to access cards to play online through their computer or tablet or phone, or they can print them out and play at home. Then they can listen to the game through Zoom.” The event will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature a mix of prizes. “It’s designer purses, including Michael Kors, Coach and Kate Spade, as well as themed baskets,” Sharp noted. Themes will include Family Fun, Baby, Date Night, Christmas, Sweet Treats, Coffee Lovers and more. Giveaway drawings will also be held, featuring tickets to local attractions, including the Turkey Hill Experience, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park and Painting With a Twist, as well as other gift certificates and gift items. Numerous local businesses and organizations have sponsored games or donated prizes for the event, including Doe Run Furniture, Heistand Automotive, Baron Insurance Group and Sloan’s

Manheim Pharmacy. This will be the second time the Women’s Club of Manheim has held a virtual bingo, and the first event was very successful, Sharp said, noting that more than 100 people participated. “People were hesitant with it being virtual. They were a little unsure of how it was going to work,” she recalled. “I tell people, ‘Don’t be afraid to do a virtual event.’ It went really smoothly.” An added benefit of the virtual setup was the opportunity to extend the reach of Women’s Club supporters, she noted, adding that people from other states, including North Carolina, New York and New Jersey, played with local family and friends. Small groups of friends can also get together to play even though the event is virtual, she suggested. “It’s a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon supporting the community,” she stated. “We had several small groups who got together last time and people said how much they enjoyed it.” Proceeds from the bingo will benefit local individuals and organizations. “One hundred percent of any of our fundraisers goes back into

Global Disciples from pg 1

NationsWorship will virtually unite Christians from around the world on Nov. 19.

God? To gather all across the globe and express our unity in Christ?’” said global worship specialist Tim Bentch. Bentch said the virtual event, NationsWorship, is significant because it crosses cultural, political, and international boundaries. “It’s a chance for believers to stand together as one, and we won’t allow different perspectives and other COVID divisions to come between us,” he said. For 25 years, Global Disciples has worked with clusters of churches in Africa, Asia, and the Americas to train members of churches in those areas to be missionaries in their homelands. “Our goal is to help people come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior by working through local churches that are closer to

those unreached areas,” explained Bentch. The 2020 event involved videos, Zoom, and livestream technology to bring people together. For 2021, NationsWorship will also include a live component, which will be held at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata, on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. The event will be livestreamed and also broadcast again at 10:30 p.m. The video will be available on demand through Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022. According to Bentch, the event will include videos from a number of cultures around the world. “It’s a chance for the church here in America to worship (along) with unique expression of worship from Africa and

Asia,” said Bentch. “The worship may come from a village of brand-new believers, and it may be very simple - just clapping and singing,” he said. “Those are parts that really move my heart.” Bentch also described a modern worship song, “Glory to the Righteous One,” which is being written for the event by James and Daniella, a couple in Rwanda who are musicians and worship leaders. “On that song, I am working with people in India, Mexico, Nepal, and Ethiopia and videotaping them singing along on the chorus,” said Bentch. Bentch said that the 2021 NationsWorship is based on Isaiah 24:16, which reads in part, “From the farthest part of the earth comes the sound of songs.” “(There will

be) all these voices coming together and worshiping God as one,” said Bentch, who noted that the DOVE worship team will lead several songs and that a diverse worship choir is being created for the event, which Bentch noted has become important for the international partners. “They told us last year, ‘This is the first time we really felt connected,’” explained Bentch, “and we are honored to worship together with our brothers and sisters from diverse places of the world.” DOVE Westgate in Ephrata can accommodate 900 worshipers. Those wishing to attend NationsWorship live are asked to visit http://global disciples.org/nationsworship to register prior to the event.

Community Foundation Announces New Fund County for the long term. S. Dale High, chair of the High Foundation and chair emeritus of the High companies, served as board member and board chair of the Community Foundation from 2002 through 2006. His leadership spurred the organization to embrace a broader leadership role in the community and expand its purpose as a true philanthropic partner for Lancaster County. Since that time, the High Family has established multiple funds with the Community Foundation, and the organizations have worked closely to support shared initiatives, including investments in SoWe and the Lancaster Cares COVID-19 Relief Fund. Five years ago, High Foundation stepped into another leading role as a presenting sponsor of the Extraordinary Give. Its leadership gift, alongside funds from Rodgers & Associates and the Community Foundation, means that every dollar donated during the annual 24-hour giving day is stretched to expand the benefit to the more than 500 participating nonprofit organizations. The High Foundation team

and board, led by Robin Stauffer, will continue to play an active role and advise on how the dollars from the donor advised fund are distributed and granted. As it does with all funds, the Community Foundation will provide philanthropic expertise, an extensive understanding of the local nonprofit landscape, and administrative and technical support. On Oct. 11, the Lancaster County Community Foundation announced the establishment of the High Foundation Fund at the Lancaster County Community Foundation. This new fund joins the Community Foundation’s Forever Lancaster movement, which aims to build the community’s philanthropic legacy. The High Foundation Fund was established as a donor advised fund with a $65 million gift. The fund will allow S. Dale High and the High family to expand their philanthropic and community legacy and focus increased energy on creating impact in Lancaster County and beyond. Established in 1980, the High Foundation has spent the past 40 years living out the mission to improve the lives of individuals who live and work in Lancaster city, Lancaster County, and other communities where the High companies provide economic investment and employment. partner with other Christcentered, life-affirming groups and began working with a ministry in Philadelphia, offering information on partnering with churches, engaging with donors, and even helping to obtain an ultrasound bus for one organization. But partnerships were only part of the story. The ministry also offers equipping resources to other organizations. “ We were meeting with high school students and teaching them ways to walk in sexual integrity,” said Baum, referring to a curriculum for teens and young adults called “Sexuality by Design.” The ministry also offers leadership help in the form of president Lisa Hosler’s book called “The Unexhausted Leader.” “(Our reach) extended beyond the Susquehanna Valley, so the name Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services wasn’t going to work much longer,” said Baum. The organization’s pregnancy services centers, located in Lebanon, Lancaster, Ephrata, and Columbia, became Align Pregnancy Services. Becca Keretzman, director of the Ephrata location, explained that each center offers a variety of services, such as pregnancy tests, prenatal and parenting classes, a baby boutique, and other services, including ultrasounds at some locations. Keretzman described the Earn While You Learn program that rewards parents-

tique. Those who attend all 15 weeks of classes may choose from a large item such as a crib. She added that classes are tailored to clients’ needs and may include videos, information on infant care, and prayer. The Gospel is proclaimed in words throughout the program. Parenting classes offer material for parents of children from birth through age 12. Clients may be served in person or virtually. “Ephrata is unique in that there is not another center close by,” said Keretzman, who noted as many as 20 clients a week visit the center. “We see people from the other side of New Holland,” she said. Baum noted that services are also available for those who have terminated a pregnancy. “We have Bible studies and one-on-one conversations,” she noted. During 2020, the ministry became acquainted with more than 500 new area families when the organization’s stockpile of diapers, baby wipes, and formula was needed by young families unable to obtain those items. “We offered a week’s worth of free baby supplies at a time,” explained Baum, who recalled porch pickups and deliveries to families. “What a blessing to reach people spiritually and to meet physical needs.” Information about Align Life Ministries’ services may be found at https://align lifeministries.org.
