Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, cares about health, especially the health of Lititz-area residents. Since the advent of COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions, Ababou has been especially concerned about the stresses related to job losses, remaining indoors, and isolation from family and friends. “It’s important for people to have body and mind fitness,” said Ababou. Assessing the current situation, Ababou noted that both the virus and the safety measures employed have given rise to depression and anxiety. “The stress of not working, no jobs, and the economy … these things create barriers for people,” said Ababou. He noted the situation may be compounded by a pre-existing mental health diagnosis and added that addictive behaviors are also on the rise. He noted that lack of exercise from staying home contributes to weight gain and energy loss.

locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes

With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history

and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals,

as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, cofounded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve greatgrandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. Through her “buy a book, donate a book” project, she seeks to carry on her father’s legacy of serving and sharing God’s love with others. The annual scholarship is available for one youth and one adult. The scholarship is a $400 maximum per person, and the youth scholarship is open to people ages 12 to 18.

When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-today employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high

point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith,

Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

The nonprofit, which promotes good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living among girls, chooses 36 winners from hundreds of entries. In August, West and Yohe heard that some of their nominees were among the winners. Rahwa Teklai, who lives in Manheim Township, was nominated by Yohe and was chosen as a fundraising winner for her work as a SoleMate. Four Paradise Elementary School coaches - Falon Doutrich, Brooke Sexton, Kristen Rogers, and Val Ruhl were chosen as winners in the coaching category. Yohe reported that a SoleMate trains for an event of their choice while raising funds for GOTR. Teklai became familiar with GOTR because her daughter took part in the program and because her employer, PNC Bank, is a sponsor for GOTR.

A little sister of one of the girls came out of the house and rolled in the glitter, which gave all involved a chuckle. “It was a way for them to connect with the girls

Holiday Shopping Fair To Aid Pet Entities BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

More than 70 local businesses, crafters, vendors, and food sellers will come together to show their support for homeless pets at the eighth annual Holiday Shopping Fair and Pet Food Donation Drive on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held in the space that previously housed the Bon-Ton department store at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster. This is a new venue for the Holiday Shopping Fair, as coronavirus mitigation

guidelines necessitated finding a larger space. Booths will be spread throughout the store in order to promote social distancing. Additional precautions will be taken to encourage safety for everyone involved. Face coverings will be required, social distancing will be maintained, and hand sanitizer stations will be located at the entrances and throughout the space. Volunteers will count shoppers to maintain occupancy limits and will check the temperatures of everyone entering the room. The first 100 adult

attendees will receive free goodie bags filled with special offers, coupons, and samples. There will be opportunities to enter prize drawings; attendees may collect their vendor passport game cards at the information desk. The Holiday Shopping Fair and Pet Food Donation Drive is open to people and pets, as it is presented by Furever Home Adoption Center, 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster. “It is the perfect opportunity to get a head start on
