Millport Conservancy To Host Fall Fest Making Plans To Return To Vietnam

By Ann Mead Ash

To Andrea Rush, executive director for the North Museum of Nature and Science, partnering with Millport Conservancy to hold a Family Fun Fall Fest just made sense. “Why wouldn’t we do this?” asked Rush. “We are very attuned to our collective impact in the community. In working together, we achieve more for the Lancaster County residents we both serve.” With that goal in mind, the organizations’ inaugural Fall Fest will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millport Conservancy, 737 E. Millport Road, Lititz. The event will include a variety of games and other activities, including a mini reptile petting zoo and the Great Lititz Run Pumpkin Race, which will involve real pumpkins. Organizers have put their heads together to come up with fun activities See Fall Fest pg 10

The first Family Fun Fall Fest, which is being organized by North Museum of Nature and Science in partnership with Millport Conservancy, will benefit stream conservation at Millport and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming at the North Museum. The event will be held on Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millport Conservancy in Lititz.

Gifts Of Joy Seeks Christmas Donors “We want to always provide that small glimmer of hope,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC). McDevitt noted that one of the organization’s main goals is to help prevent isolation among those in the county struggling with mental health issues and, by doing so, to prevent suicide. “(Gifts of Joy) is one of the things we do at Christmastime for those who have severe mental health issues,” McDevitt explained. Working with nearly 50 case managers with the Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, MHALC provided 800 gifts for 463 children and adults during the 2018 holiday season. “One of the things See Gifts Of Joy pg 3

In May 2019, before the second trip, a group from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1008 gave a presentation at GSHS. that is important is that people have that hope during the holidays from knowing that someone cares,” said McDevitt. MHALC is looking toward Christmas 2019 with hopes that more churches, youth groups, businesses, families, and other organizations and individuals will get involved in the Gifts of Joy program. MHA representatives will give individual or group donors a list of items a patient has requested. Many requests are for items that meet basic needs such as batteries, socks, or a phone charger. Charlotte Leckow, marketing coordinator with MHALC, noted that for those fighting mental health issues, loneliness is often a problem. “Mental health (issues) can be very isolating,” remarked Leckow, adding

that patients may have lost supporting relationships during the struggle. “(Patients) might not have that social connection to celebrate the holidays the way we might,” said Leckow. McDevitt agreed. “Many may feel forgotten,” she said. “It’s a time when you see so much depicting togetherness, family, friends, and holiday parties.” McDevitt said that the holidays are a time when many residents are looking for ways to give. “At Christmas, the community is especially generous,” she said. “So many of us are full of gratitude, and we want to give back. This is an opportunity for people to support (other members of the community).” MHALC provides services to area

Both sides also combined for 20 penalties with Warwick amassing 138 yards on 11 calls as play began to get chippy later in the game. president of the chapter. During lunch in May, Williams talked to the veterans and asked if anyone in the group would like to return to Vietnam. Later on, she contacted Kelly, and fundraising efforts to make the trip possible began. Williams has arranged for a group of 21, including 17 veterans and some spouses, to visit Vietnam from Friday, March 27, to Thursday, April 9, 2020. The group will raise funds for the trip at the seventh annual Martic MOST (Military Outreach Support Team) tribute to veterans on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Marticville Middle School, 356 Frogtown Road, Pequea. The free event will feature a refurbished Huey 823 helicopter, the Wall of Fallen Heroes of the Mid-Atlantic States exhibit, and displays by organizations such as the Quarryville VFW, Wreaths Across America, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, and others. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m., and the program will begin in the auditorium at 9:30 a.m. The group will also hold a Dine to Donate Fundraising Night at Texas Roadhouse, 2317 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 3 to 10 p.m. A percentage of the sales from that evening will go to Chapter 1008. Ron Horn, who served in the Navy in Vietnam, became curious about young people in Vietnam who have been affected by Agent Orange when he heard Garden Spot students talk about their trip. Horn, who lost a lung because of his exposure to Agent Orange, which he explained can be passed

to one’s children, has three grown children. He explained that more than a dozen ailments have been linked to Agent Orange exposure in the second generation. Rich Mellott, who served in the Army, would like to see people he knows in Vietnam and visit the places he was stationed. “I want to see Hill 55,” he stated. When Mellott was there two years ago, he went to Tuy Hòa, near where his base camp was located. “That hadn’t changed,” he stated. “But Quy Nhon was a fishing village, and now they have high-rise motels and a 16-foot-wide boardwalk.” Charlie Miller, who served as a Marine, struggled with articulating his reasons for going. “It’s hard to say,” he said. “I have a history.” Miller noted that he was badly wounded in Vietnam, but he also lost a brother to the war. “I always wanted to go back, (but) I can’t really explain it,” he said. “It will be tough, but I just want to go over.” Williams said that the group has also contacted area businesses seeking support. Readers who would like to know more may visit www.vva-avva1008.org or contact Kelly at 717-394-2448 or PresidentVVA1008 @gmail.com.

Center Plans Concert, Museum Open House were saved from demolition in the 1980s. The larger building was converted to use as a performing arts space and is also rented out for weddings and other private events. The smaller building next door houses the museum. The building has held a collection of Native American artifacts, art and educational materials for decades, but for more than a year has not been open to the public. With new items added, the museum will have an open house on Nov. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. The museum building has been known as the Eicher Sisters House because what is now the front room was originally home

to Maria and Anna Eicher, daughters of immigrant Daniel Eicher, in the 1730s. A plaque in the museum is a memorial to J. Gordon McQuate, one of the founding members of the museum. The Ephrata area resident, who died in 2009, collected Native American artifacts, was a member of the American Indian Archeological Institute and was a

Terry Strongheart, a singer of Native American songs, will perform at the Eicher Arts Center in Ephrata on Sunday, Nov. 10. The center’s Eastern Woodland Native American Museum will also reopen to the public that day. Strongheart, whose ancestry is Native American and Danish, has garnered seven Native American Music Award nominations. His songs have touched on issues facing Native Americans and life experiences on the Pow Wow Trail of Native American cultural events. He will perform at 2 p.m. in the larger Eicher building, the Eicher House, 407 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Both historic Eicher buildings

“We Saw the Sea, written by Irving Berlin in 1936, which references the Navy, will be sung as a male duet. From World War II, the group will present “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B, sung by Anne Kempsell, Kiana Corley, and Jennifer Mattson. “The White Cliffs of Dover will be sung by Bradley Mattson. “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree will be performed as a duet by the Mattsons. Fryburg explained that in this version of the song, the man and woman sing back and forth to each other. “He will wear military attire, and she will wear casual clothes, said Fryburg, who added that the skit will be set up with the pair sitting at writing desks so it looks like they are corresponding by letter. From the 1960s, a trio will sing Peter, Paul, and Mary’s “Cruel War, and from the 1990s, “From a Distance will be sung as a solo by Kiana Corley. The concert will conclude with the entire choir and the congregation singing Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America, which will include the introduction to the song. Fryburg said that he hopes area veterans will attend the event. “Veterans are the ones we are most anxious to see there to recognize and honor them, he said. There is no admission fee to attend the concert, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit a fund that the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Medical Center has established to aid veterans in need.

Concert from pg 1 Brian Humphreys, who served in the Iraq War. The free concert and reading event will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster, According to Fryburg, the concert will open with the choir singing “Chester, a popular song from the American Revolution, and a welcome by Jennifer Mattson, lead pastor of St. Thomas, who will offer a prayer for veterans. The congregation will be invited to join in on the national anthem and other songs. Readings from the history of the country that will be featured will include Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, which will be followed by “Battle Hymn of the Republic. “America the Beautiful will be sung with the congregation before Miller performs the George M. Cohan favorites “The Yankee Doodle Boy, “You’re a Grand Old Flag, and “Over There. Fryburg will read the message Col. Charles E. Stanton gave upon arriving in France on July 4, 1917, during World War I. As the United States endeavored to return the favor France had done the fledgling nation during the Revolutionary War, Stanton noted that the friendship between the countries had not been forgotten and ended his statement with the words, “Lafayette, we are here.

that do not skimp on educational aspects. “We have incredible science- and naturerelated activities planned for the full day,” said Rush. “(Attendees) may even find a real fossil or mineral in the archaeological dig pit.” Along with activities such as face painting, those who dare may want to brave an obstacle course to encounter some creepy creatures often associated with autumn. “We promise no actual spiders were used in the (spider obstacle) course creation,” Rush said. The Great Lititz Pumpkin Race will give those who attend a chance to paint a pumpkin, which may then be enter it into a race to see how it fares down a portion of Lititz Run. Rush noted that the partnership between the North Museum and Millport Conservancy is a natural fit. “The North Museum of Nature and Science is an organization with limited access to nature,” explained Rush. “Millport Conservancy is an incredible natural asset to Lancaster County with limited infrastructure and without education staff or internal programming resources. We were brought together upon

the suggestion of Millport board president Alan Caniglia, who also serves on our board as a (Franklin & Marshall College) liaison,” said Rush. The fundraiser will benefit science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming at the North Museum, along with Millport Conservancy’s work to restore Lititz Run creek, which includes soil erosion control, wetlands restoration, and stream management. Millport Conservancy was established in 1988. The 85-acre property is teeming with native wildlife and plants. In 2008, Franklin & Marshall College partnered with the conservancy in a pairing that has allowed the college to use the area for both education and research. The North Museum, located at the corner of Buchanan and College avenues in Lancaster, is open year round. It features a variety of natural collections, an active glass-enclosed beehive, a state-of-the-art planetarium, a live animal room, and a dinosaur gallery. Tickets to the Fall Fest may be purchased at www.northmuseum.org/events/fallfest/. Tickets, which are discounted for children, are tax deductible.

The Jingle Paws Holiday Bazaar to benefit 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Mount Joy campus of Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, which is located at 432 Old Market St., Mount Joy. The fifth annual holiday craft show is

expected to have more than 50 stands, with 80% being crafters and 20% vendors. There will be a variety of handcrafted items. Food items will also be for sale. Admission will be free. For additional information, readers may visit www.2ndchance4liferescue.org.

“Veterans, Values, And Voices” To Showcase Military Experience Orange side effects and untreated PTSD as challenges taking a toll on Vietnam veterans and the inspirations for artwork that she will exhibit in the Nov. 10 event. Admission to “Veterans, Values, and Voices” will be free of charge. The event will take place in the Ware Center’s 400seat Steinman Hall, and the organizers hope to have a capacity crowd. “We want them to see the value of what we’re doing with the veteran community and be more inclined to support it,” Ginder said. “It’s all about getting a better (sense) of the veteran experience, getting the general public to understand that in a better way,” Hower remarked, adding that he plans to speak about the time he accidentally wandered into an anti-war rally in Chicago while wearing a military uniform in 1972. For more information about Writeface, readers may visit www.writeface.org or contact Hower at Scotthower@aol.com or 717-209-0410 or Ginder at 717-799-0154 or annie.ginder@comcast.net.

“Veterans, Values, and Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace II” will showcase the veteran experience through art, poetry, music, and storytelling. The event, which was first held in 2018, will be hosted by Writeface at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. Writeface co-founder Scott Hower, who is an Air Force veteran and a Conestoga resident, noted that the event was created after Lancaster’s Spoken Word Festival was discontinued. Writeface is dedicated to helping military veterans develop a healthier spirit through guided writing exercises and had led a class at the Ware Center in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, so creating a similar event seemed like a natural fit. “We picked it up as a way for veterans to tell their stories the way they want to tell them,” said Writeface co-founder Annie Ginder of Willow Street. At the event on Nov. 10, about 14 or 15 people will participate in some way. The majority are veterans, although Ginder and several other civilians will also be part of the program. “Everybody knows a veteran,” Hower explained. Marc Zito, an Army veteran who lives in Ephrata, and East Lampeter Township resident Stephen Shaw, who served in both the Marines and the Army, will reflect on transitions. “In 20 years in the military, (my life) used to be go, go, go, but now I have

stopped,” Zito remarked, adding that he has gone from a highly scheduled life to uncertainty. “Now I’m wrapping my mind around that.” Shaw agreed. “It’s a cultural transition,” he said. “You go from civilian life to the military and back to civilian life. Before you moved away from home, you had support, and in the military, you had support. Now (that) you’re out, you have to do it on your own. It can be overwhelming.” Writeface’s process helps individuals clarify their thoughts by putting everything on paper and then reviewing and reflecting. Army veteran Karl Dunkleberger of Mount Joy has been part of Writeface for five years, and he has learned and grown through the experience. “My content is more focused and concentrated, thanks to Scott. He gave me freedom not to worry about my spelling,” Dunkleberger commented. “Annie has given me lightness to my artwork. It balances out the darkness.” In contrast to Dunkleberger’s longevity, Chieu Le of Lancaster is new to Writeface. He has been speaking at area high schools about his Vietnam War experiences as a member of the Vietnamese air force and later the United States Army. “I escaped communism in Vietnam at the last minute and was embraced by the warm arms of the United States,” Le said. Navy medic Gerrie Strobel now lives in Windsor and gladly comes to Lancaster for Writeface programs. She feels strongly about Agent Orange awareness and advocates for survivors of the dangerous chemical. “There’s so much more to be said about it,” Strobel said, citing Agent

Ads submitted to us that begin with A-1, 1-A, AAA, etc for position purposes, will No Longer Be Accepted This Way, unless proven that it is part of your Registered Business Name.
