Barbershop Quartet To Sing At Library O
n Thursday, Nov. 18, at 6:30 p.m., the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, will host a concert featuring 3 Dads and a Lad in the community room. Since 2001, 3 Dads and a Lad has been performing classic barbershop tunes, ’50s and ’60s doo-wop, and patriotic anthems. Group members are lead Paul Stober, baritone Dwight Hershberger, tenor Jerry Schwebel, and bass Shaun Ressler. Stober is a Lititz native and Millersville University graduate who began singing barbershop in 1994. Hershberger began life on a farm near Kansas City, Mo. His love of barbershop has led him to join a number of quartets over the years. Schwebel, who grew up in Millersville, comes by his singing talent naturally. His father sang with the Lancaster Red Rose Chorus, and his mother with the Red Rose City Sweet Adelines. Schwebel joined his father in the Red Rose Chorus, and he has sung with a number of area groups. Ressler, a recent Millersville University graduate, joined the group in 2012.

St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, will host its annual Christmas bazaar in person on Friday, Nov. 19, from 3 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The wearing of masks is required for entry, and there will not be an online shopping component this year. For added safety, there will be a separate entrance and exit for guests. Attendees should look for signage and a new side entrance.
Do you ever arrive early for an appointment and decide to kill a few minutes by taking a walk? That is what I did on a lovely August day when I had an interview with a Landis Communities representative at Leaman Woods, located on the south side of the Landis Homes campus. Following the path from Amaryllis Lane past the gazebo and around the bend, I discovered a

Fitted with a bookcase and glass door, along with a peaked roof, the library also has six benches situated in front of it. The Little Free Library was the dream of Don Ziegler and represents the efforts he and his wife, Priscilla, who oversees the Little Free Library, made to bring the enchanting

United Zion Retirement Community’s Art Gallery is exhibiting “The National Parks of the West,” an art show by landscape photographer John Schmidt. The exhibit will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Tuesday, Nov. 30. United Zion is located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz. All the photographs in the exhibit have the same aspect ratio and format as Schmidt believes this choice encourages people to spend more time observing the detail and features in the images. Schmidt has been a photographer
since childhood. He studied photographic science while attending the State University of New York in Farmingdale, Long Island, and then worked at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, N.Y., for 20 years. He has been inspired by photographers Louis Daguerre, Mathew Brady, Margaret Bourke-White, Ansel Adams and Annie Leibovitz. All Art Gallery visitors will be screened and are required to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth. For more information on the Art Gallery, including exhibiting, email marketing@uzrc.org.

In addition, a photographer took photos of all the wildflowers found in the woods and created a book with their names for the library. “So, when you see the native flowers and you don’t know what they are, you can take this along (to help identify them),” explained Priscilla. Priscilla and Don reported that the year that the library opened it was featured on https://littlefree library.org as one of the most creative libraries to open that year. Recalling the ribbon cutting at the opening of the library, Priscilla noted how the community united to create the special space. “All the people involved in putting this together - builders, the person who donated the funds for us to join the Free Little Libraries, the day care there must have been 50 people here,” she said. He asked the workers to preserve more than 10 feet of one tree and to cut the top into a peak. He also asked for boards to be made from the trunk that was cut. With help from a resident who was a carpenter and the Landis Homes maintenance department, the tree was converted to a Little Free Library, which opened in May 2019. Priscilla visits the Little Free Library on a daily basis, but every two weeks she replenishes the supply with donated books from residents and organizers of the yearly Landis Homes book sale, as well as local authors who write their own stories. “The idea is that it’s a free library, and when you take the book, it’s yours, or if you have something, you can donate it,” explained Don. Each month, Priscilla removes books that have been in the library too long and takes them to Booksavers at the Ephrata ReUzit on State. A Musical Interlude Imagine four children ranging in age from kindergarten to third grade so enraptured by an hourlong presentation that they are surprised when it is over. What could grab and hold their attention? Why, music, of course, but not just any music. The four children were in a SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) after-school class at Wickersham Elementary, and the presentation was made by Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concertmaster Luigi Mazzocchi and assistant concertmaster Nina Zubadi. The pair performed a Leclair sonata for two violins. Following the performance, the musicians spent time talking to the students and answering questions. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the students were “lost in learning.” “They had an engaging conversation. It was stimulating, instructive, and inspiring,” said Vuolo. “Experiencing music live has an impact emotionally. It was a really upbeat and happy time.” The presentation came about through a partnership between LSO and SWAN, with the visit being part of LSO’s Stand Partner Community Program, in which LSO makes a concerted effort to serve the community. SWAN is a free one-hour music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through several SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serv-
ing children affected by parental incarceration. Since the children play ukuleles, it was natural for them to compare their instruments with the musicians’ violins. “(The students) saw that the violin has two holes to let the sound out and that both (instruments) have bridges, but they are different in shape and size. Both have four strings and a similarshaped body,” shared Vuolo. “They were describing the instruments with good adjectives, and they created good conversation.” The visiting musicians then gave the students an opportunity to play with them. “One of the most magical moments was when the symphony musicians had our children start plucking two notes repeatedly (on their ukuleles), and then the musicians started to play a folk dance,” said Vuolo. “They really did sound beautiful together.” Vuolo is especially looking forward to a return visit by Mazzocchi

Pleasant View Communities’ Harvest Fest and Craft Bazaar will be an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate fall, said Aubrey Smith, community engagement coordinator. “We want the residents and staff and their families, as well as the greater community, to come out for a fun day,” she said. The Harvest Fest and Craft Bazaar will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Town Square and in the Town Square North building on the Pleasant View campus, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The bazaar will begin at 9 a.m., and the festival will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We’re going to have live music from the Knuckle Dusters, who are a bluegrass band,” Smith commented. “We’ll also have live chainsaw carving from Shaun Coppersmith of Copperhead Carvings. He’ll also have some things he’s already carved for sale.” Students from the OneLife Institute, who live on campus, will host games for children and families. “We’ll have a ton of activities and lots of carnival-style games with prizes,” Smith noted. Face painting will also be offered. The auxiliary will sell food during the event as well. “They’ll have pork barbecue sandwiches, chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs and whoopie pies,” Smith said. Pleas-
ant View’s on-site restaurant, Hearth and Harrow, will also be open and will serve its regular menu. “Our thrift shop will be open during the event, and we’ll have at least 18 vendors at the bazaar,” she remarked. Items for sale will include jewelry, ornaments, birdhouses, dog treats, scarves and handcrafted wood items. “Our train club has a bunch of things they’re going to be selling as well,” Smith remarked, adding that the vendors will be a mix of residents and members of the community. Pleasant View held its first Harvest Fest and Craft Bazaar in 2019 but was unable to hold the event last year due to the pandemic. “This will be our first big community event in the last year and a half, so we’re really excited about it,” Smith said. Events will be held both indoors and outdoors. “We want people to come out and enjoy anything at their comfort level,” she noted. “We’ll have our firepits going and our heaters will be on on our patio, so people can warm up if they choose to sit outside and eat. The music will be going on inside, but we’ll have our audio system set up so people can hear it outside as well.” She said the event will offer a day to celebrate being together as a community. “We had such a great time at our event in 2019,
