The More Love Letters Project

By Ann Mead Ash

Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fall production of “Little Women,” said that the play had been on her short list for many years. “I have always been a fan,” said Wagner. “It’s a classic that teenagers should know, and the themes are universal and lifelong.” In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Louisa May Alcott classic, which was written in two parts, Wagner has chosen the Thomas Hischak production to be staged at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 21, 22, and 23, at 7:30 p.m. each evening. “Little Women” is set in Massachusetts during the Civil War. Cavod Theatre To Present “The Gifts Of The Magi” By Ann Mead Ash

Cordell Huyard, who is directing Cavod Theatre’s “The Gifts of the Magi” this holiday season, is amazed that the organization has not produced the musical before this. “It’s

will be hosted by the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Lancaster County on Thursday, Nov. 21, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Blair Room at the Community Services Building, 640 Janet Ave., Lancaster. The project is based on a book by Hannah Brencher, “The World Needs More Love Letters,” and the public is invited to write letters to strangers to show them to show total them that they are not alone in the world. The event is free and open to adults and students, including student groups. No registration is required, and attendees may bring their lunch, if desired.

Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 6 and 13; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 8 and 15. The show will be choreographed by Stephanie Morales. Empowering Community To Fight Addiction By Ann Mead Ash

Joel Jakubowski knows what often happens when a friend or family member becomes addicted. “The most common response is to enable, which keeps people stuck (in addiction),” said Jakubowski, adding, “We think it’s helping, but it’s not.” Working with TTC/Potter’s House and other local organizations, Jakubowski will give advice on how to motivate a person dealing with an addiction to move forward when he speaks on the topic of “Enabling vs. Support” at the fall awareness seminar to be held at Conestoga Church of the Brethren (COB), 141 E. Main St., Leola, on Thursday, Nov. 21, beginning at See Awareness Seminar pg 4

Zitzman Post Office Returns To Lititz Members of the Lititz Historical Foundation have announced an exciting donation. A generous out-of-state donor made it possible for Lititz’s second post office to return to its place of origin. The post office is now on display in the same room where it once stood nearly 190 years ago. Mail service in Lititz was formalized in 1806, when Christian Hall became the first postmaster of Lititz, running a small operation in the Lititz Springs Hotel, which is now the General Sutter, 14 E. Main St., Lititz. In 1830, Frederick Zitzman was appointed the second postmaster of Lititz by President Andrew Jackson. Zitzman, who lived from 1787 to 1872,

but each wants to buy the other a special Christmas gift. The story contains an important lesson about gift-giving and a twist that has made it a sentimental holiday favorite. Huyard noted that this version features the music of Stephen Sondheim and mixes other stories by O. Henry into the script as subplots. “Fans

of O. Henry will recognize (the tales), said Huyard. Some of the cast members are Cavod Theatre veterans, such as Caleb Heckman as Jim, the husband. Others, including Pilisa Mackey, a Lancaster Bible College theater program graduate who plays Della, the wife, are new to Cavod. Other characters include Steve Rau as Willy, a newspaper man and narrator of the show, and

show moves quickly. There’s never a dead moment.â€? The production also refuses to waver from the truth behind the holiday. “The show starts off with this beautiful song about the true meaning of Christmas,â€? said Huyard, referencing the three kings who brought costly gifts to Jesus. “They sing a beautiful medley of ‘Gloria,’â€? he added. “(The song) gets audience members in the mindset of thinking about the most sacrificial love in human history ‌ God coming down and taking human form and being born in a manger to take away the sins of the world.â€? Huyard went on to note that the story of the young married couple mirrors the sacrificial love of Christ. “(In the end), they see that the love they have for each other is more important than the gifts, (just as) the magi brought these amazing gifts but they recognized that the most glorious thing in the manger was the love of God,â€? said Huyard. Moses Mariscal as Soapy, a man who is homeless by choice and who is trying unsuccessfully to get arrested so he will not be on the streets during Christmas. A cast of characters are played by Kalor Long as the City Him and Hannah Rau as the City Her. Huyard lauded the talents of the pair, who will take turns appearing as a police officer, a French waiter, a posh store owner, and an angry woman from the Bronx. Challenges of staging the play include each cast member playing a character that is larger than life and the complexity of the musical score. “The music is incredibly difficult, and each cast member is carrying a lot, said Huyard, who added that the “smart, talented cast members are on track. “They bring a wealth of experience and skills to the show, said Huyard, adding, “The play highlights the strength of each person in the production team. While some shows are strictly date-night fodder and others lend themselves to family fare, Huyard insists that at about 90 minutes in length, “The Gifts of the Magi offers both. “It has beautiful moments of romance, (but) the grandchildren will love this and be laughing, said Huyard. “The

Extraordinary Give from pg 1 The Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced that the eighth annual Extraordinary Give will take place on Friday, Nov. 22. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals can visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, make a secure online donation, and have their gift stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates, High Foundation, and additional corporate sponsors. The 2018 Extraordinary Give was a record-breaking day, generating $10.2 million from more than 23,500 donors to support 493 nonprofit organizations. Since the event started in 2012, the Extraordinary Give has engaged more than 30,000 people in giving, supported more than 500 nonprofits, and raised $42 million for the community. New for the 2019 Extraordinary Give, the minimum gift amount has been reduced from $25 to $10. The change was made with the goal of inspiring more individuals to participate and generating more engagement from across the region. The new minimum amount aligns with the Community Foundation strategic priority of inclusion and aims to continue increasing the number of unique donors who make a gift during the event.

Any licensed driver is eligible and can register to participate at w w w. e x t r a g i v e . o r g / i n fo / extra-opportunities. On Nov. 22, ExtraGive Hot Spots will be located in Columbia and Elizabethtown, at The Shops at Rockvale, and at other venues in order to highlight locations across Lancaster County. Additional details are forthcoming. The ExtraGive Fest, the Extraordinary Finale, will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 22 at the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The event, free and open to the public, will offer the community an opportunity to count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give. Designed by Lititz-based event company ATOMIC and local firm Shumaker PDT, ExtraGive Fest will serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, feature local and regional bands, show screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, and have social media stations for photo-ops and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. New this year will be the ExtraGive Food Truck Lane. Guests can enjoy a selection of local food vendors parked on South Queen Street adjacent to the Lancaster County Convention Center. Downtown Lancaster will again be aglow with a 14-story light show at the Griest Building in Penn Square, which will feature changing colors and patterns from 5 p.m. to midnight. For more information, including a list of participants, readers may visit www.extragive.org. War era. Other cast members include the girls’ mother, Marmie, played by Natalie Knox; Laurie, played by Aaron Kern; John Brooke, played by Xavier LeFevre; Aunt March, played by Jaime Ely; Hannah, played by Cassie Peris; Mr. Laurence, played by Oliver Klemmer; and Mr. March, played by Jim Mikulski. Wagner emphasized that the Hischak version of the play spotlights some of the most memorable moments of the novel, focusing on Jo’s journey growing up during the Civil War. Although many cast members were familiar with the story, understanding the differences between present-day life and daily living during the Civil War era has been a challenge. “We spent a lot of time thinking about what life was truly like then,” said Wagner. “We especially talked about how different it was for women.” Wagner also turned to Dana Kinsey, who teaches dramaturgy at LCHS. Her class members researched the era and created a reference binder for cast members to help immerse them in the time period. The heartwarming themes fans remember from the novel are present in the adaptation, according to Wagner, which highlights the March girls coming of

age and finding romance, while growing into women and finding independence. Wagner said she and the cast have focused on the loyalty of family. “You can go away and experience your own dreams, but when something happens with the family everyone comes together,” Wagner said, adding that her cast has also focused on women’s rights during that time period. “The March women were taught to have their own opinions,” said Wagner. “They were well educated, and they were given great respect in the home. (Although) Jo is very expressive about the limitations society placed on females, in their own home they were looked upon as equals and great assets to the family.” Fertal is relishing her double role as Jo and the narrator. A fan of both the book and movies, she was hoping to be cast in the lead. “I relate (to the character of Jo),” noted Fertal, who said one of her favorite scenes is between Beth and Jo just before Beth becomes sick. “The relationship between all the sisters is very close, but Jo’s bond with Beth is very special,” said Fertal. Joel Jakubowski to grab on tighter. Not only does that not assist people in getting well, it actually keeps people in their addiction longer and with a greater level of sickness,” he said. “It helps the addiction to progress.” He noted that misconceptions about addiction also interfere with overcoming addiction. “It’s such a stigmatic issue (that) some people feel by coming (to a seminar) they will be identified with that issue,” said Jakubowski. “We need to get people to understand that we have to break down those barriers so people can get well. Education removes the stigma.” According to Jakubowski, many families in the United States are experiencing addiction first or second hand. “We are not alone in this,” said Jakubowski, who added that seminars help bring community members together to find solutions. “We find the remedy through our unification as a community,” he shared. “These things are empowering.” Jere Cassel, pastor of Conestoga COB, said that the church has become involved in holding seminars that are based on Scripture. “Ephesians 4 reminds us that we are part of the body of Christ,” said Cassel. “Conestoga COB … has been able to step into an area of ministry that needed strengthening in eastern Lancaster County. Our location and facility seems to be in the right place for addiction awareness and the counseling needs of our area.” Readers who have questions about the seminar may call 717826-1154. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services throughout central Pennsylvania, received a $7,500 contribution from BB&T via Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. James L. Malfregeot II (right), BB&T’s market president, presented the check to Schreiber president James DeBord (left), on Oct. 23. BB&T’s contribution will provide prekindergarten scholarship funds for families enrolled in Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. Preschool or Circle of Friends Academy. This is the third year Schreiber has been approved to receive EITC dollars from area businesses. Schreiber is approved to receive money in two categories: as a prekindergarten scholarship organization and as an educational improvement organization. The latter category supports programs that provide community service opportunities for high school students to meet curriculum and graduation requirements. 6:30 p.m. In addition to speaking, Jakubowski will lead a panel discussion, including a time for questions from the audience. Panel members will be Eric Comp, Randy Steffy, pastor Ken Reinford, and addiction professional Samuel Mwangi. A number of local organizations that work to fight addiction will have displays at the event, including CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), ELANCO Celebrate Recovery, TTC/Potter’s House, and PALS (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones). Jakubowski has extensive education and experience in the area of addiction. He entered long-term treatment in 2003. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in behavioral health and addictions studies from Alvernia University and his master’s in organizational leadership from Clarks Summit University. He has completed his doctoral course work in behavioral health organizational leadership at Grand Canyon University, and he is a certified minister, certified alcohol and drug counselor, certified intervention professional, and certified recovery specialist. According to Jakubowski, the idea behind the seminar is to provide information to individuals who have friends or family grappling with addiction. “(We will look at) some unhealthy methods, specifically enabling, that are common responses to someone in addiction,” said Jakubowski. “(For instance), a person in addiction creates a plight about why they have no money, and the friend or loved one gives them money for that reason, and then the money is spent on drugs.” Real help comes in the form of speaking the truth in love, according to Jakubowski. “There has to be a counterintuitive duty of love versus the emotional feelings,” he said. “Sometimes that can be difficult (because) it is totally counterintuitive,” explained Jakubowski, who added that trying to help in ways that enable can only worsen the problem. “The intuitive thing is

WEF Sets Campaign, Family Fun Day The Warwick Education Foundation (WEF), founded in 1997, exists to promote, enhance, and endow enriched educational, teaching and learning opportunities within the Warwick School District. On Oct. 1, the foundation kicked off its annual Raising Warwick fundraising campaign with a goal to provide $250,000 to support learning opportunities in the district. The giving deadline has been extended to Sunday, Nov. 17. Last year, the foundation gave $235,000 to raise learning opportunities for the district’s 4,100 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Also, at the school district’s request, the foundation raised money for facility dogs to enrich learning and provide comfort in schools; through these efforts, the community supplied more than $40,000 - $10,000 over the goal - which was enough to buy and train three dogs. According to WEF executive director Barbara Mobley, community members are still supporting Paws for Warwick in order to expand the program. Supporting science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses and upgrading computer technology takes much of the foundation’s budget. Recently, it contributed more than $60,000 to

renovate and transform the computer labs in all four elementary schools. For the 2019-20 school year, many of the foundation’s 12 grants are providing new tools for students taking STEM courses. Another popular grant supports the One Book, One School, One Community program, which focuses on a book that elementary school students and parents read together, coupled with in-school activities to dramatize the setting or experience. The program often concludes with a visit by the book’s author. The foundation also brings people and events to schools through its experts-inresidence grants. This year, middle school students were able to watch a live performance of “My Heart in a Suitcase, a play set in 1938 Berlin and telling the real-life story of a 12-year-old Jewish girl whose family is torn apart by Nazi persecution. Additionally, the foundation’s Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St., Lititz. Youths, families, and the community are invited. Entrance to the event is free, and activity fees have been set. Event proceeds will support the foundation. There will be free carnival games, plus reduced rates for inflatable bounce and

Artist To Host Holiday Show A holiday art show and sale will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 17, from noon to 5 p.m. at Frederick D. Swarr’s Art Studio, 301 Bell Ave., Mount Gretna. Swarr, a local resident artist and art philanthropist, will showcase

special holiday art including his original paintings, limited edition prints, holiday greeting cards, and “Fred’s Attic Art at his studio located in Mount Gretna. For more information, readers may call 717-964-2091 or visit www.fdswarr.com.

The Holocaust-era play “My Heart in a Suitcase was performed live for Warwick middle-schoolers through a grant provided by the Warwick Education Foundation. This year, 31 teachers shared 12 grants, all of which were funded by the donations of the community to the foundation. The foundation’s annual Raising Warwick fundraising campaign will run through Nov. 17. obstacle games, including a 60-foot obstacle course and “Hippo Chow Down. A magician, a balloon artist, and disc jockey Cody Landis will provide entertainment throughout the day, and the Just Dance video game will be available. The Parent Teacher Organizations from Warwick elementary schools will host free carnival

Warwick Gridders top Barons, Again by Vaughn Brown

If ever there was a way to top the accomplishment of beating Manheim Central for the first time since 1983, Warwick’s rematch with the Barons in Friday night’s District

Three Class 5A quarterfinal was it. With the clock showing zeros, Tanner Haines’ 17-yard field goal attempt went true as the Warriors moved on to this week’s semifinal matchup with Cocalico via a thrilling 31-28 triumph over Manheim

Central in enemy territory. As the two-time defending District champions, the fourth seeded Barons (9-3) hosted number five Warwick (10-2) at Elden Rettew Stadium and were looking to redeem a week three, 37-7 loss to

the Warriors in a highly anticipated showdown. Behind Colton Miler’s 166-yard, three touchdown effort, Warwick was able to keep things close throughout the game, but it was a clutch, special teams play that turned the tide.

Following a 33-yard scoring strike from Manheim’s Evan Simon to J.D. Grube that tied the game at 28-28 with 6:19 to go, both defenses forced the other side into a punting situation. With just under two minutes on the clock, Warwick’s Adam Martin burst through the Manheim line, blocking the kick and giving Warwick the ball with 1:55 to go. With a little help from a series of Manheim penalties, the Warriors worked their way down to the Baron two-yard line, and with two seconds to play Haines drilled the game winner. The victory marks just the third postseason win for the Warriors in school history and sets them up for a good shot at winning District gold. Manheim opened up a 7-0 lead when Simon found Ben Wagner for a 78-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter, but McCracken, who passed for 171 yards and a touchdown tied the game in the second on a 33-yard pitch and catch to Caleb Schmitz. Schmitz led all receivers with 113 yards on eight catches for the night. The Barons retook the lead when

Colby Wagner plunged into the end zone from two yards out to make it 14-7, but Warwick answered on Miller’s first score of the game from the two-yard line with 38 seconds remaining until halftime. The resulting PAT attempt was no good and the Warriors went into the locker room trailing 14-13. Simon, who passed for 214 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 102 and one score, fired up the home crowd in the third when he made it 21-20 on his lone rushing touchdown following Miller’s second score of the game. Facing third and long on the Manheim 36-yard line, Simon broke free on a quarterback keeper and scampered 64 yards into the end zone with 3:54 left in the quarter. Miller’s three-yard bull rush for his third touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter was followed by a successful two-point conversion on a pass from McCracken to Conor Adams (4-33) to make it 28-21 before Grube tied the game leading up to Haines’ last second heroics.

Johnson & Johnson and predecessors Pfizer and Warner Lambert have been part of the Lititz business and industry landscape for decades. Recently, Johnson & Johnson made a contribution to support the renewal of the 56-year-old Lititz Springs Pool. The pool complex and Lititz recCenter are located just across the railroad tracks from Johnson & Johnson’s Lititz manufacturing and distribution plant. Lititz recCenter is leading the comprehensive renovation project now underway at Lititz Springs Pool. A $10,000 contribution from Johnson & Johnson is helping to secure $2 million in matching state grant funding for the project. Construction to completely rehabilitate the stressed pool site began with demolition of the old filtration building and most of the existing bath houses. A new and larger mechanical building will be erected to house modern filters and chemical treatment systems. ADA-compliant modern restrooms, showers, and changing areas will be reconstructed on the same footprint of the existing bath houses. The concrete desks surrounding the pools were excavated to accommodate expansion of the main pool, the construction of an all new splash pad, and to regrade the entire complex to bring it into ADA compliance. Repairs are being made to the competition lap swimming pool. Over the past year, Lititz recCenter has rallied community support from businesses, community organizations, and community members in order to leverage state grant funding, which is making the renewal project for Lititz Springs Pool possible. The project is forecast to be completed in May 2020, in time for the opening of the summer swim season.

137-145 E. Main St., Lititz, as the post office building. He used a special cabinet for organizing and sorting mail for the members of the community. Door-to-door mail delivery was not existent in Zitzman’s day, so residents made trips to Zitzman’s home to pick up their mail. There were no postage stamps. The amount that was owed was determined when the mail was

picked up, based upon how far the piece had traveled to arrive to its destination. In 1847, postage stamps were introduced. The donation was made by a Colorado resident, who had recently visited the Lititz Historical Foundation. The donor had ownership of this piece of Lititz and United States Post Office history for several decades. His father-in-law had origi-

nally purchased the cabinet at a public sale in Lititz many years ago. Members of the Lititz Historical Foundation reported that they are thrilled to receive the donation and feel honored to have the item on display for the public to view at the Johannes Mueller House. B2BD To Present “Backstage: The Musical”

R050317

By Chelsea Peifer

Born to Be Different (B2BD) Productions, a local youth theater company, will present the comedy “Backstage: The Musical” on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16 and 17, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Set in the 1920s, the show brings to light the things that can go hilariously awry in theater when eternal optimist Violet Davies, portrayed by Paris Black, and levelheaded Angelo Finley, portrayed by Tyler Yarbrough, team up to attempt to produce a successful show. “Backstage: The Musical” was written by Eliana Kreider, 19, who has performed in several B2BD productions and will serve as narrator for this show. At its heart, the comedy is meant to make audience members believe in their dreams and the power of finding joy, even in life’s most chaotic moments. “It is just plain down hilarious,” said director Nicole Yutzy. “People will stay and watch our rehearsals, and they’re just roaring.” “In this show, the cast is aware of the audience and makes a lot of jokes directly to them,” Yutzy explained. “It’s a really fun show, and kids and adults will love it. Plus, it’s set in the 1920s, so

you’ve got all of the fun fringe and sparkles in the costumes.” Performances are scheduled to begin at 2 and 7 p.m. on both days. To reserve free tickets, interested individuals may visit www.b2bd.org. Limited tickets will also be available at the door prior to each show, while supplies last. A freewill offering will be received at intermission to help cover the costs of the performances. In addition to Kreider, Black, and Yarbrough, the cast includes Marissa Harrington, Elijah Masciantonio, Joy Perkins, Ivan Karpitskiy, Jon Hurst, Anya Weaver, Mariya Martin, Emily Hackman, Ethan Black, Taryn Mellinger, Annie Mowery, Chloe Weaver, Katherine Osterhouse, Tyler Sommers, Tima Karpitskiy, Katya Karpitskiy, and Brianna Burkholder. Cast members range in age from 12 to 19 and hail from Ephrata, Lititz, Manheim, Millersville, Myerstown, Reading, and beyond. Assisting Yutzy on the show’s production team are artistic director and choreographer Derek Martin, assistant director Kara Newswanger, music director Matt Yutzy, stage manager Brandon Harlee, set and costume designer Sophie Rogers, set designers Daniel Rogers and Jethro Beiler, props coordinator Jalisa Martin, and costume constructor Jessica Zeidler.

On Nov. 16 and 17, Born to Be Different Productions will perform “Backstage: The Musical” in Landis Hall at The Junction Center in Manheim. Tickets are free and may be reserved in advance at www.b2bd.org. Seating is limited. Yutzy said that B2BD “kind of started by accident.” Yutzy had been teaching a theater class at a small, private school, and when the class got cut, many students were disappointed. She wrote a script for the students to perform outside of school, and that play was performed in 2013 at Hammer Creek Mennonite Church. “The parents and kids loved it so much that we decided to keep doing shows,” said Yutzy. “We love teens, and we love giving them the opportunity to use their talents or discover

talents that maybe they didn’t even know they have,” Yutzy shared. “We want to give them a place to be loved and to celebrate their gifts.” “And, like our name says, we’re always doing something different,” continued Yutzy. “It’s fun to always try new things.” In 2018, B2BD staged both spring and fall productions, as well as a summer tour of shows at various locations. To learn more about upcoming performances, as well as audition opportunities, readers may visit www.b2bd.org.
