SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) is a free one-hour afterschool music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through 12 SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the program benefits the See Artistic Endeavors pg 2
“ExtraGive” Is Extraordinarily Important n a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at

www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that
the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming

in-person classes could be held, SWAN quickly created instructional videos that were posted on YouTube and provided to SDoL for students to access, but Vuolo reported SWAN was not happy with the results. “We did not see them interacting with those videos,” she recalled. To engage students in lessons again, SWAN began enrolling students for individual lessons on Zoom. “That’s when we discovered how few actually had access to the internet and devices,” said Vuolo. Still determined to reach more children, SWAN teachers began working with the small percentage of children who could be reached via Zoom, expanding to offer violin, keyboard, and guitar online. “The lessons went beautifully,” reported Vuolo. “The students really enjoyed having interaction with their teachers and were able to learn quickly.” In August, when SDoL opted to open school in an online format, SWAN learned that the district would allow SWAN

can have weekly lessons,” said Vuolo recently. As SWAN program director, Brooke Beazley monitors each private Zoom lesson. “I see how beneficial the Zoom lessons have been,” said Beazley. “Every student is making progress and improving their ability to focus, listen, and communicate. They are developing patience as they learn to play their instruments, and they have been practicing and attending lessons diligently. The lesson is a stress-free and fun experience.” In addition to providing students with a stress release, Beazley noted the sense of pride a student feels when a teacher acknowledges their progress. “Through music, our students are developing important life skills that they can bring to their academics and other aspects of their lives.” Terri Glick, who is a counselor at Buchanan Elementary, shared that SWAN has been beneficial to SDoL students. “I am thrilled that Zoom lessons are being offered,” she said. “(The program) has allowed students to tap into their creative abilities while attending school virtually. When I ask the students about their lessons their faces always brighten.” On Friday, Nov. 20, SWAN will take part in the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20. Individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. November at Lititz recCenter has brought a focus to giving back to the community to support families in need and community members who face unexpected, or even long-term, hardships. For many decades, Lititz recCenter has provided scholarship assistance to support families, individuals, seniors, and youths in need with swim lessons, summer camps, sports, after-school programs, wellness programs, and short-term memberships. The Community Partnership Program at Lititz recCenter is named in honor of Rochelle “Skip Clair, who, in the past, at a pivotal time of struggle for Lititz Community Center, stepped forward herself to lend leadership as a volunteer. Businesses, organizations, local foundations, and many individuals, including board members and staff of Lititz recCenter, support the Community Partnership Program to make scholarships possible. Families and individuals can inquire about eligibility by contacting Lititz recCenter at 717-6265096. Community resource providers such as local police, school nurses, physicians, and
social services also refer families and individuals who might benefit from support. Local families who find themselves more isolated at home might also have higher needs for food and hygiene items provided through Warwick Community Chest. To encourage donations of nonperishable food items and personal care and health products, both Lititz recCenter and recROC on the Rock Lititz campus are extending a discount for new memberships when donations for the Warwick Community Chest are made at Lititz recCenter or recROC. This membership special will run through the end of November. Lititz recCenter and recROC are open to members, and daily passes are available to purchase for nonmembers. A new program session kicked off in the first week in November for swim lessons, martial arts, yoga, and fitness programs. Monthly bouldering, fitness, and training programs continue at recROC. For membership and program information, readers may contact Lititz recCenter at the aforementioned number or visit www.lititzrec.com.

As Cavod Theatre reached its 10th anniversary this year, the decision was made to look back to the organization’s roots and celebrate by staging a junior version of one of Cavod’s first productions “The Music Man.” “The Music Man Jr.” will play at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 4 and 11; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 5 and 12; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 6 and 13. “It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who is grappling with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions, dividing the 36member cast into “family groupings,” and teaching the
show’s lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emotion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing. The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster.

Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” According to Weaver, the exercise in exploring character personality helps the students “broaden their horizons as they grow in their acting.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said. The director would like to see audience members have a similar experience. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. It’s OK to be who you are.” Tickets are limited, and the theater will be at 50% capacity. Tickets to the show are available at https://cavod.org/ theatre/ or by calling 717-354-3355.

Shakespeare Classic To Play At LCHS BY ANN MEAD ASH
Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fall production of Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” had numerous reasons for choosing the classic tale of good and evil as the school’s fall play. First, because it is not copyrighted, it can be recorded and livestreamed. But perhaps just as importantly, she had a ready and willing cast. “I have a core group of students who are into Shakespeare,” she said. “They are strong actors, and we have talked about Shakespeare and how much they love Shakespeare.” Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the audience for the show will be limited to family
and friends of the 22-member cast and four-member crew. “We will have (the production) professionally recorded and edited,” said Wagner, who explained that the recording will then be streamed via a link. Those wishing to watch the digital version may visit https://www.lchsyes.org/apps /pages/FPAupcomingevents to obtain the link, which will be available for a fee. Readers who have questions may email tbrill@lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310. The story of Macbeth, a Scottish general, played by Xavier LeFevre, and his wife, Lady Macbeth, played by Maddi Lewis, is one of prophecy and treachery. Macbeth is under the rule of King Duncan, played by Freddy
Lancaster Catholic High School students will perform “The Tragedy of Macbeth” live for family members and online for community members.
Arnold, when he is told by three witches, played by Caroline Erb, Sheridan Riva, and Annalise Kauffman, that he will become the king of Scotland in Duncan’s place. The prediction inspires Macbeth, with encouragement from his wife, to murder Duncan and take his throne. More murder and tyranny ensue until the mayhem is stopped by the combined forces of Scotland and England. Jacob Fertal will play Banquo, Sarah Scott will play Malcolm, and Zac Snyder will play Macduff. Stage managers are Dylan Saez and Lyla Hall. Wagner noted that she chose a tragedy because the school has performed several comedies, but she found that the play lends itself to COVID19 restrictions, such as social distancing, and the set is minimal. The play will be set in the apocalypse of the future with gothic grunge costuming. “The language is challenging,” said Wagner, who wants to be sure the students understand what they are saying and use the correct pronunciation. She said the students are familiar with the characters because Shakespeare is part of the LCHS junior year curriculum. It is important to Wagner that the students
convey their understanding to audience members. “I want audiences to feel engaged in what we’re doing and to … get a sense of the language and the story because the students are so into their characters and understand the language so well,” she said.
Wagner has noticed that the students are especially grateful for the opportunity to perform. “The kids are having fun,” she said. “They seem much more appreciative of the chance to rehearse together in person, do a Shakespeare play, perform in front of a
small audience, record it, and send it out,” Wagner added, noting that participants are looking forward to having family from out of town view the show via the link. “They are excited about everything in a more meaningful way,” she said.

Holiday Dinner Giveaway Slated The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different. The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no
pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers. Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-5675341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with

all the trimmings to lowincome families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. For information about how to contribute, readers may visit www.lcpn.org.

community to participate in the Downtown Lititz Holiday StoryWalk, which will be available through Sunday, Jan. 3. The walk begins at The Purple Turtle, 7 Kleine Lane, and heads south to Main Street, travels up and down Main, and ends at Borough Hall. This self-directed activity invites people of all ages to read a children’s picture book in stages while walking along a path. Participants are encouraged to complete a simple activity at each page. StoryWalks aim to promote literacy, physical activity, parental involvement, and ties to the community. In the Lititz walk, partici-
pants will read “I Got the Christmas Spirit” by Connie Schofield-Morrison. The story explores the sights and sounds of the holiday season as a mother and daughter shop in the city. Participants may enter to win a copy of the book by scanning the QR code at the conclusion of the walk or by taking a picture of their child with one of the StoryWalk pages and posting it on the Lititz Public Library Facebook page or tagging the Lititz Public Library on social media. For more information, readers may call the library at 717-626-2255 or visit the aforementioned website.

Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Road, Lititz, has posted several holiday activities and charitable projects. The library will participate in the Lititz Warwick Community Chest Christmas Basket Project this year. The goal of this project is to provide the meal ingredients, or the means to purchase food, for a special holiday meal for a family unit. Those who wish to help may take a leaf from the Thanksgiving Donation Tree in the library. They should purchase the requested item written on the leaf and return the item to the library. The library’s annual Holiday Happening will look a little different this year. This year the library will offer a recording of Santa reading “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Clement C. Moore at www.lititzlibrary.org and on the “Lititz Public Library” page on Facebook. In addition, grab-and-go craft bags will be available to both adults and children, while supplies last. A library table will be decked with children’s library materials that may be purchased to commemorate a teacher, a grandparent, or another special person. These books will be placed in the library’s collection, with a commemorative bookplate in each book purchased. Cash or checks will be accepted as payment. In the spirit of holiday giving, the library will collect new masks, mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, earmuffs and umbrellas for local children. Members of the community may bring in these items to decorate the annual Mitten Tree. The library invites the
