SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive Journey To Bethlehem Soldiers On BY ANN MEAD ASH
Last year, organizers of Journey to Bethlehem, an annual fundraiser for Woodcrest Retreat, changed the script a little by having participants meet up with a Roman guard on the journey. This year, a few more changes are planned. Some of those changes are related to COVID-19 restrictions, but others are designed to enhance the experience for those who attend. Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to the stable where Christ was born. The 10th

A Safer Way To Celebrate The Season Lititz Plans Christmas In The Park onths of dealing with COVID-19 restrictions has brought out creative ways of celebrating holidays and continuing traditions in the face of struggle. Members of the Lititz Springs Park (LSP) board have approved a

modified Christmas in the Park program to be held this year. Volunteers from the LSP Board of Trustees are working together to bring a much-needed sense of normalcy and joy to the community this holiday season. With a focus on keeping residents safe, organizers have decided to spread the celebration across three
nights. Limited gatherings will be held in the park, 24-28 N. Broad St., Lititz, on Friday, Dec. 4; Saturday, Dec. 5; and Sunday, Dec. 6, with each 30-minute program starting at 6:30 p.m. in the band shell. Those who cannot attend will be able to watch the celebrations livestreamed on the LSP Facebook page. The 2020 Christmas in the Park
program will feature many of the elements that the community has come to know and enjoy in the past; however, each night will also offer a unique performance. Friday night’s event will be a familyfriendly evening of “Christmas Future,” including a performance by the Mennonite Children’s Choir

Spreading Christmas Joy, One Light At A Time BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. The hours are 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Krasley Christmas, which is what he calls his display, started as a joke between Krasley and his brother, who sent him a video of a commercial showing an elaborate display. “He was like, ‘Is this your house?’
Don Krasley loves Christmas, and it shows. For the past 14 years, he has set up a Christmas display in his yard at 525 Woodland Drive, Manheim, and has invited the public to stop by and watch a light show set to music. His display will run every night from Thursday, Nov. 26, through

as a joke, but it lit a fire in me,” Krasley recalled. “I said, ‘I can do that.’ And I did.” He was influenced by his grandfather, who had a display in his yard in Manheim and who passed on his love of Christmas. What started as a relatively modest display has grown to include more than 80,000 lights and a lengthy show choreographed to music that Krasley chooses and programs. It takes Krasley about three weeks to set up the display, but he spends time all year working on it, whether he’s adding new songs or picking up new items for his yard. A few years ago, he switched to all LED lights, which has significantly cut down on his electric bill, he said, noting that he spends about $50 a month to operate the display. Additionally, Krasley is an electrician by trade, so he keeps costs down by doing almost all of the

wiring and other electrical work himself. Over the years, Krasley has worked on his yard to make room for the ever-growing display. “When I first started this, I didn’t have a wide-open property for it, so I took out a lot of old trees,” he explained. His home is located on a cul-de-sac, which makes the perfect spot for visitors to view the display from their cars, and his property is a bit isolated, so the light show doesn’t bother neighbors. For the past 10 years, Krasley has
been collecting donations for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central PA in Hershey as part of his display, although donations are optional. “I like what the Ronald McDonald House does for families. They are a great organization,” he stated, adding that he and some friends set up the lights outside the house in Hershey every year as well. Over the past decade, he has donated more than $29,000 to the organization. This year, Krasley’s display will

annual event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 11 and 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 12 and 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ child in the manger. Adam Fox, summer camp director at Woodcrest Retreat, noted that the final stop, which in past years included a movie,

will now be a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men. “In the final scene, the wise men … have just discovered a sign in the stars,” explained Fox. “They will debate ... whether they should risk a long dangerous journey of many months through the desert to see this king. In the end, they decide it’s worth it because the king is worth it.” To stay within COVID-19 limitations for buildings, organizers ask that those who wish to attend register for a particular time slot by visiting www.woodcrestretreat.org. A link on the main page can be used to register. Walk-ins will be accepted as well, but they may have to wait longer to start the journey. Instead of a wagon ride to the first scene, school buses will be utilized, and families will be seated together. According to Fox, during the 2019 Journey to Bethlehem, the organization set a Saturday night attendance record. More than 19,000 people have attended over the nine years the event has been held, and organizers hope to hit 20,000 this year.

Cavod To Present “The Music Man Jr.” BY ANN MEAD ASH
As Cavod Theatre reached its 10th anniversary this year, the decision was made to look back to the organization’s roots and celebrate by staging a junior version of one of Cavod’s first productions “The Music Man.” “The Music Man Jr.” will play at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 4 and 11; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 5 and 12; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 6 and 13. “It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who is grappling with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID19 restrictions, dividing the 36member cast into “family groupings,” and teaching the show’s

lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emotion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing. The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster. Because “The Music Man” is
such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” According to Weaver, the exercise in exploring character personality helps the students “broaden their horizons as they grow in their acting.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the
kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said. The director would like to see audience members have a similar experience. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. It’s OK to be who you are.” Tickets are limited, and the theater will be at 50% capacity. Tickets to the show are available at https://cavod.org/theatre/ or by calling 717-354-3355.

On Saturday night, the celebration will focus on “Christmas Present,” with a holiday program by the Encore Dance Center’s Performance Company and possibly a return visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus. On Sunday, the program will be a reflection of “Christmas Past” featuring wellloved, old-fashioned Christmas songs and a candle-lighting. The community Christmas tree will be lit all three nights. Ephrata Cloister Posts “Candlelight Chat” The Historic Ephrata Cloister will offer a Candlelight Chat on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. on Facebook Live. A re-enactor will portray Michael Miller, a member of the Ephrata Cloister community in 1782. Miller, a married householder member of the Cloister, was a jack-of-all-trades. Judging from his surviving personal account book, he had customers throughout the neighborhood. The live event will allow
viewers to ask questions of the reenactor and discover some stories that may relate to modern life. The new program offers a virtual substitute for the Candlelight Open House, which traditionally opens the holiday season at the historic site. Registration for the program is available for a nominal donation and can be made by visiting www.facebook.com/Historic EphrataCloister/ and clicking
on “Events.” Historic Ephrata Cloister is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates. Grant support provided by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the Borough of Ephrata Cultural Arts Grant has made funding for the new virtual format of this program possible. The Associates also continue to operate the museum store
at Ephrata Cloister, offering a selection of handcrafted items, books, and limited-edition Christmas cards. Readers may contact the museum store directly at 717-733-2592 or c-dganseii@ pa.gov to discuss purchases and pickup arrangements. For more information on the Historic Ephrata Cloister and the site’s activities, readers may visit the aforementioned website or www.EphrataCloister.org.
Promotion To Benefit Rec Center, Businesses Lititz recCenter has announced Bottoms Up Pub & Bar Partnership, a new benefit to support both the rec center’s nonprofit mission and local Lititz establishments. Bottoms Up Pub & Bar Partnership is slated to run as a punch card purchase promotion through the end of December. Seven local establishments - Bulls Head Public House, Fetish Brewing Company, Appalachian Brewing Company,
Owl’s Nest Restaurant & Sippery, Mick’s All American Pub, Blackworth Live Fire Grill, and Tied House - will honor punches for a complimentary beer, up to 12 ounces, at each location in November and December. An alternate beverage may be supplied at each establishment’s discretion. The purpose of the punch card program is to encourage patronage of the local restaurants. Additional-
ly, proceeds from punch card sales will support the Lititz recCenter Community Partnership financial assistance program. This program helps children, families, or individuals facing hardship to stay involved in youth sports, summer camps, swimming lessons, and after-school programs. It also helps families and individuals to maintain a short-term membership. Currently, establishments are
required by COVID-19 mandates to serve food with alcoholic beverages, meaning a separate purchase would be required for Bottoms Up punch card holders to redeem their complimentary beer or beverage. Punch cards can be purchased at any time at www.lititzrec.com, by stopping by Lititz recCenter, or by calling 717-626-5096. Punch cards are initially available while supplies last.
MTHS Schedules Virtual Ugly Sweater 5K BY ANN MEAD ASH
In order to keep runners, volunteers, and spectators safe, the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) cross-country team booster club has decided to hold its annual Ugly Sweater XC 5K Run and Walk as a virtual event for 2020. A flyer about the race reads “We are doing our best to keep this a family fun event and great kickoff for the holiday season.” Those wishing to register may visit www.lancastercounty xc5k.com to register by midnight on Thursday, Dec. 3. Registrants will receive a drawstring race bag, a souvenir race bib, and a handmade ornament while supplies last. One ornament will be distributed per family. Individuals who have already registered, may sign up for the virtual race at the aforementioned website. Those
who have registered, but wish to opt out may donate their registration fee to the organization rather than receive the race bag and ornament. Packet pickup for the race will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Overlook Activities Center in Overlook Park, 2042 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Participants can complete their 5K anytime between packet pickup and Sunday, Dec. 6, at midnight. Prizes will still be given out. Ten ugly sweater outfit awards will be given to runners who post a photo of themselves at the UglysweaterXC5K Facebook page prior to or after running the 5K distance. Organizers will select random winners to receive gift cards. All runners who complete 5K distance are asked to send their times to the organization via Facebook message to be entered in a

drawing. Three randomly selected winners will each win a cash prize. Entries in both drawings must be received by midnight on Dec. 6, to take part. Assistant junior high coach, booster club member, and race organizer Michael Phillips noted that last year’s race raised more
than $6,000, which gave the organization enough money to order a timing system it had been working toward purchasing. Funds raised are also used to purchase T-shirts, hold preseason team-building outings, honor senior runners, host the end-of-the-year banquet, and bring in motivational speakers.

half marathon, 10K, and 5K fundraiser in 2019. A graduate of James Madison University and a certified public accountant, he is a manager in the assurance division at Walz Group. At its Sept. 17 meeting, the board of directors also elected Keith Herr as vice chair, Rebecca Smith as secretary, Rebecca Walck as treasurer, and Brad Lefever and James Spanos

Goodman Chiropractic Opens In Ephrata Goodman Chiropractic has opened at 3440 Rothsville Road, Ephrata, after a fire destroyed its previous New Holland location in 2019. After working with the founder of an upper cervical technique in Michigan for three years, chiropractor Dr. Steven Goodman moved to Lancaster in 1980. He developed the Goodman Method of Chiropractic, which focuses on the upper cervical spine. He notes that because the head and neck
are vital to one’s balance, the specialized service focuses on getting to the root of debilitating pain, particularly chronic pain. Migraines and pain in the face, arms, back, and legs are treated at the atlas and C1 vertebra using an instrument Steven invented to tap under the skull and level the head without twisting the neck. Clients have traveled from Greece, Ukraine, and England to receive treatment at Goodman Chiropractic.
