Creative And Colorful Christmas Brunch Planned By Ann Mead Ash

About a year ago, Dona Fisher, founder of Friendship Foundation and the Change of Pace Bible studies, received a Christmas card from a neighbor that featured a painting by Liz Hess. The painting captivated Fisher. “The painting ... is of all the world bowing down to the Christ child,” said Fisher, who went on to share that the card depicts people representing countries from all over the world who are dressed in the colorful clothing of their native land. The card inspired Fisher to ask Hess if she would tell her story at an event. “(The painting was) what really stirred me to ask her,” recalled Fisher. “I was moved by that, and I picked up the phone and called her shop.”

Hess agreed to be a speaker at the event that Fisher calls “A Creative and Colorful Christmas Brunch.” The meal for women, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Eden Resort Courtyard, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, will feature a buffet meal and cookies shaped like red umbrellas to honor Hess’ use of the colorful parasol in her paintings. Hess is a well-known, awardwinning Lancaster artist who began life in Honduras, Central America, as the child of missionary parents. She grew up in Lancaster, and she later became a missionary herself, serving in Lapland, Finland. Hess now has a shop in Lancaster’s Gallery Row. She travels abroad yearly to paint on location. Sing For The Moment from pg 1 devised a way for area Alzheimer’s patients who have an interest in singing to rehearse together and present two yearly concerts at Landis Homes. Hoover asked Clair Leaman, conductor of the “Messiah Sing-Alongs at Westminster Presbyterian in Lancaster and in Chester County, to work with the group, and Sing for the Moment held its first holiday concert in December 2018. This year’s concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at Landis Homes in the West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend. The first part of the vocal concert will include a variety of Christmas favorites, followed by a performance by the St. Stephen Reformed Church of New Holland handbell choir under the direction of Clair’s wife, Charlene. The final segment of the vocal concert will feature a number of songs from “The Sound of Music. Several vocalists will be spotlighted during the concert,

including Shelby Swartley and David Harnish on “The Holly and the Ivy and Bernie Linn on “O Holy Night. Kristen Albert will be the featured vocalist on “The Sound of Music, and Lois Good will be in the spotlight for “Do-ReMi. Carl Good will be the vocalist on “Edelweiss. Other familiar tunes in the presentation will include “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, “I Saw Three Ships, and “What Child Is This? The nearly 50 choir members begin one-hour weekly rehearsals eight weeks prior to the concert. Clair creates a song book that includes all the song lyrics in large print with the pages decorated with artwork created by students at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown. According to Clair, each practice is an engaging experience. “It is more a journey than a practice. We have fun together, he said. He noted that recently the wife of one singer noticed a change in her husband when practice ended. “She said that he had been very cantankerous when he came in to

sing, recalled Clair, who added that the woman said her husband’s mood was much improved at the end. “It was like turning a page, said Clair. In addition to Clair, Hoover, and Yingling, the Sing for the Moment organizing committee includes Swartley, a social worker with Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Program; Deb Laws-Landis of Landis Homes; pianist Sandy Smoker; Ann Fulmer; and Donna Becker. “We have had standing roomonly crowds each time (we have held a concert), said Clair of the fall 2018 and spring 2019 events, which he added are often emotional for members of the audience. “There are a lot of tears shed when (relatives) see their family members engaged (and singing). Individuals who would like more information about the concert or choir participation may call 717-568-2595, ext. 1100, or email cyingling@alz.org. For information in the case of inclement weather, readers may call 717-569-3271 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

How Small Businesses Give Back

Christmas

Information from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs says that small businesses, or firms with fewer than 500 workers, accounted for 99.7% of businesses in 2016, the most recent year for data. Firms with fewer than 100 workers accounted for 98.2% of companies. Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways. Small businesses employ local residents. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8% of net new jobs in the United

States between 1993 and 2016. Small businesses are innovative. The SBA notes that small businesses represent about 96% of employer firms in highpatenting manufacturing industries. That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas. Small businesses support local charities. Many local businesses give to charity, particularly local charities. Some donate money while others may offer their professional services or event spaces, each of which can be particularly helpful to local communities. Small businesses contribute to community identity. Small businesses contribute to the charm and character of a town or city. Many local businesses make up the fabric of a town, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have endured. Small businesses help the environment. Shopping locally means consumers do not have to travel far to get their goods and services. The United States

Environmental Protection Agency’s research report on walkable downtown centers found small businesses encourage walking and cycling, helping to reduce air pollution from vehicles. Small businesses keep money in communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation for the small businesses in their communities in various ways.

Here are eight ways to support local businesses: 1. Shop at small businesses regularly. 2. Use social media to give your recommendations on small businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service. 3. Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences. 4. Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan. 5. Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or club-based fundraisers. 6. If you own a small business, keep business cards, flyers, or a sign advertising another small business in the area to show mutual support. 7. Invite small business owners to community activity centers, nursing homes, schools, and the like to share their experiences about starting a business in the area. 8. Participate in community events that may be sponsored by small business owners.

Red Rose Skaters from pg 1 On,” and Wolfer said that the script and skating will add a few twists and turns to the musicals and movies of the same name. “We use the musical as our base, but we spin off in many directions,” explained Wolfer. The Red Rose Figure Skating Club show will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carerra Drive, Lancaster. The show will feature more than 50 skaters, including beginners, adults, and ice hockey skaters. The storyline follows Campbell, played by Courtney Meyers, a cheerleader at Truman High School, a suburban school with a preppy leaning. “(Truman) has a cheerleading squad that makes nationals every year,” explained Wolfer, who noted that there is a mean girl disguised as a nice girl in the character of Eva, played by Lauren King. During the first act, Campbell learns that she has been redistricted to a different high school, Jackson High School. To her dismay, the city school has a dance squad rather than a cheerleading squad. “She finds that everything is different,” said Wolfer. “Everything she thought she knew is turned upside down.” Bridget, the mascot of the Truman cheerleading squad, played by Sophia Babar, is transferred to Jackson as well. Although the first act ends in disarray, according to Wolfer, the girls begin to learn that they have to work to get to know people and find out who they really are. Act two focuses on

confidence, with the students from Jackson High School beginning to encourage each other and build each other up. “They are figuring out how to move forward and recognize their goal is to win at accepting themselves and making themselves the best they can be,” said Wolfer. The act will end with the song “Cross the Line,” which includes lyrics that explain that the students do not really know themselves until they cross a boundary in trying something they did not think they would be able to do. “They may have thought, ‘I am not good enough or strong enough to handle that,’” explained Wolfer. “They make that choice (to cross the line), and they have to do it together.” Wolfer noted that the Disney song “Lemonade Mouth” will be included along with songs from the musical “Bring It On.” Other characters in the show will include Danielle, played by Ellamay Cassidy; Kyler, played by Hannah Mencer; and Nautica, played by Livia Siefert. Other characters will include La Cienga, played by Carmen Guzman; Skyler, played by Anna Mayers; and Steven/Randall, played by Evan Bertz. Wolfer skated with Disney on Ice for several years, and she has brought her professional experience to the choreography of the show. Readers who wish to purchase tickets to the show may email Lynne@rrfsc.org. Tickets for certain seating areas will be discounted. Children age 2 and under who sit on a caregiver’s lap will be admitted free.

Christmas Brunch from pg 1 Fisher is especially looking forward to hearing Hess talk about the source of her imaginative work. “Artists have so much creativity that comes from their heart and their soul,” she said. “It starts somewhere within.” She looks forward to hearing Hess’ insights at the brunch. Guests will have the opportunity to hear about how Hess draws inspiration from worshipping the Master Painter, who has filled the Earth with form, color, and pattern. On the menu for the brunch will be quiche, fresh fruit,

pastries, orange juice, and coffee. The idea to return the event to a brunch format for women after a time of not holding a brunch was also inspired by the holidays. “I hadn’t held a brunch in a little while, and, you know, there’s a world out there that needs peace and joy,” said Fisher. “(So I decided) to have a fun brunch with women and invite someone in that we highly respect and honor in this town.” There is a cost to attend the brunch. Reservations must be made by Wednesday, Dec. 4, by calling 717-519-5220.

Library Sets Holiday Events

The Lancaster Barnstormers front office has been lauded by the Atlantic League, winning two awards for the 2019 season, it was announced recently by league president Rick White. Lancaster garnered the league’s Community Service Award for the franchise that has done the greatest work aiding those in need in its particular market. In addition, the Barnstormers’ general manager, Mike Reynolds, won the Joe Klein Executive of the Year honor for his work in growing the Barnstormers’ brand and attendance during his three seasons at the front office helm. The Barnstormers’ organization was feted for several community outreaches. One in particular was the Christmas Tree Lane presented by the BCF Group and the Christmas Spirit

Light Show that was pioneered at Clipper Magazine Stadium during the 2018 holiday season, generating over $29,000 for local charities. Also factored into the honor were Thanksgiving and Christmas programs centered at Clipper Magazine Stadium that feed the hungry through the holiday season. Lancaster is also the site of a Camp Out for Homelessness event in conjunction with Tabor Community Services. Lancaster, in its 15th season in the Atlantic League, was also applauded by the league for the creation of the Little Sluggers’ Dugout, a private room for nursing mothers, sponsored by MayGrant Obstetrics and Gynecology. Mental health awareness also came to the forefront in May in a partnership with the Lancaster Behavioral Health

Hospital. Cylo also kept a busy schedule during the 2018-19 campaign, making 587 appearances outside of the confines of the stadium. Reynolds has dramatically increased season and group ticket sales since joining the Barnstormers for the 2017 season through innovative programs like seat wraps. He has overseen a surge in attendance that produced a rise of over 35,000 fans for 2019. It was also noted by White and the other club owners that Reynolds has spearheaded a sales initiative that provides training for all teams with a yearly seminar held in Lancaster. MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition - November 27, 2019 - 11

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim. The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety. The project was submitted by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category. The project consisted of a sixstory overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority. This year, the Project of the Year Award finalists also included CCS Building Group, Willow Street - Willow Valley Chapel Relocation, Lancaster (Category:

Miscellaneous/Special Projects); Keystruct Construction Inc., York - Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Elevator Addition, Hummelstown (Category: Institutional Under $2 Million); Kinsley Construction Inc., York - York Traditions Bank Tenant Fit-out, York (Category: Commercial Under $2 Million); Mowery PSL, Mechanicsburg - Westminster Place II at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg (Category: Residential New MultiUnit); Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster - CityGate Medical Office Building and Corporate Center, Lancaster (Category: Commercial $10-$25 Million); and Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster - Amtrak Harrisburg Station - Baggage Bridge Removal, Harrisburg (Category: Miscellaneous/Special Projects). The gala was attended by more than 350 contractors, project owners, design professionals, and guests, including Sen. Ryan Aument, who presented the chapter with a 60th anniversary resolution. This year’s program featured 82 entries, judged using specific criteria regarding the quality of construction and workmanship by a panel of construction design professionals. The Excellence Award, the top honor, was given to the highest scoring project in each category, providing it earned at least 90 points. The Merit Award, second place, was given to all other projects within each category that scored 80 or more points. The Excellence Award winners at the Keystone Chapter level are now eligible to enter at the national level and compete against the best in the industry from all 69 ABC chapters nationwide. A list of all of the Excellence Award and Merit Award winners is available at https://abckeystone.org/abc -keystone-awards-top-contractors -for-excellence-in-construction-at -2019-eic-gala/.

This artistic rendering depicts how the planned waiting room will look at the newly renovated WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center. WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center is undergoing a $7.1 million renovation that will add new, state-of-the-art technology, as well as feature a redesign of the center. The work began in July and is scheduled to be completed in spring 2020. The renovations, which add upgraded technology, include: a new True-Beam Linear Accelerator, offering pinpoint accuracy and precision in the radiation treatment of cancer patients; a new CT simulator, allowing patients convenient access to the equipment physicians use to plan radiation treatments; and a state-of-the-art pharmacy that will prepare infusion medications for patients. Planned with input from WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center patients, the renovated center will feature redesigned treatment areas for both radiation and oncology patients. Oncology patients will receive their infusion and chemotherapy

treatments in enlarged individual patient bays, to allow more space for family and support people to accompany patients for treatment. Radiation patients will see an enhanced layout for their services, with their waiting area moved closer to their treatment area. Throughout the center, exam rooms are being refreshed and renovated. The renovation also will move and consolidate frequently used patient support services to the front of the center. Inside the front entrance will be offices for financial counselors, social workers, dietitians, chaplains and nurse navigators. The front of the center also will include a revamped resource room, with patient education materials and computer access. The Ephrata Community Health Foundation is helping to support the renovation, with a $500,000 campaign that is being launched in November.

12 - MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition - November 27, 2019

Art Exhibit To Feature Animal Portraits Artist Scott Higgins, who created drawings for the “We Love Our Pets” exhibit last April at Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster, will return to the gallery for a solo show in December. “Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes,” which features charcoal animal portraits, will open on Dec. 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks.

Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him feel honored to create a piece for a client. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. For more information, readers may visit www.mulberryart studios.com or the art studio’s Facebook page or Instagram account.

The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster has announced its Christmas 2019 concert series, “O Magnum Mysterium: We Sing the Mystery of Bethlehem!” Performances will be held at 4 p.m. on select Sundays, with the schedule including Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz, on Dec. 1; Zion Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville, as part of the Zion Musik Concert Series, on Dec. 8; and Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, Jan. 5, 2020. The Heritage Chorale’s artistic director, Barry L. Sawyer, has devised a program of musical meditations on the Bethlehem miracle venerated in the medieval text “O Magnum Mysterium.” With its origins deep in the Middle Ages, the text was a responsorial chant sung as part of Christmas matins - a service celebrated near the midnight hour of Christmas Eve. The Latin text describes the Nativity scene when Christ was born and laid in a manger, where animals were witnesses to his birth.
