Lititz Meals On Wheels - Still Running On Volunteer Power BY ANN MEAD ASH
eorge Nickel, president of the Lititz Meals on Wheels board, also sometimes serves as cook in the Lititz Church of the Brethren (COB) kitchen where the meals are prepared, and he is not reluctant to pepper his speech with culinary terms. “The secret to our sauce is that we are all volunteer,” proclaimed Nickel of the organization that serves more than 30,000 meals a year at a nominal per- day fee for each client. Up to seven volunteers meet at 7:30 a.m. on Mondays through Fridays at the church, located at 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. “We pack the cold lunches and the hot lunches,” said volunteer team leader Jean Steffy, who noted on that particular day the hot meal included beef chili, a corn muffin, and glazed carrots, and the cold meal featured a spring mix salad, a ham salad sandwich, cheese, a banana, and milk, among other items. The organization serves about 60 clients in the Warwick School District. Volunteer drivers handle the four delivery routes. Volunteers, especially those willing to cook, are needed.
G
Lititz Meals on Wheels dates back to 1973, when three local women Polly Eshleman, Jane Reynolds, and Arlene Shannon - approached Lititz COB about using the kitchen to feed 25 clients. “They saw a need to feed the community,” said Nickel. Nickel’s mother-in-law, Evelyn Helter, did not work on Mondays, so she volunteered to cook, something she continued to do regularly for the next 30 years. Later, Nickel’s brother-in-law became a cook. When Nickel retired from computer work in 2012, he joined the volunteer forces. “I came here to cook and shop,” said Nickel, who because of his background was quickly drafted to transfer recipes and menu plans to computers. Recipes for only 20 to 50 people were expanded and moved to computer files. Menu plans that were set for about a month were adjusted to more than two months. “We vary the menu,” said Nickel, who noted that favorites of the 112 rotating dishes include roast beef, spaghetti and meatballs, and crab cakes. “We find a menu we can scale up and tailor to our clients,” said Nickel. “We have added 50 good recipes in the past seven years.”

Historical Foundation Plans Holiday Events The Lititz Historical Foundation has organized two safe Christmasthemed events this year. Modifications have been made to both the annual Community Christmas Carol Sing and the Christmas Candlelight Tour to conform to COVID-19 restrictions. The annual carol sing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. The Lititz Historical Foundation, in conjunction with the Lititz Moravian Archives, will hold the event at Lititz Moravian
Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz. The free outdoor gathering will require attendees to wear masks and remain socially distant. Organizers note that Church Square is large enough to allow attendees
plenty of room to spread out, and that attendance will be capped at 200 persons. The Moravian Trombone Choir will play while Lititzarea residents who attend engage in singing holiday classics. See Historical Foundation pg 2

Main St., Lititz, to learn not only the story of Mueller and his family, but also the history and customs of the Moravian community of Lititz during the18th century. Preregistration is required, and a nominal per-person fee is charged for each tour. Tours will take place every 20 minutes beginning at 5 p.m. The final tour will begin at 8:20 p.m. Groups will be limited to a maximum of six persons. Children Invited To Write To Santa Children in the community are invited to send their wish lists and letters to Santa Claus. Letters may be sent to Santa Claus, c/o the North Pole, Manheim Post Office, 47 S. Main St., Manheim, PA 17545. Letters may
also be taken to the Manheim Post Office and placed in the box provided in the lobby area. For children to receive a return letter from Santa, the name and address of each child must be provided.
Meals On Wheels from pg 1 Menus are submitted twice yearly to the Office of Aging, and food and the kitchen facilities are inspected. “We have to have balanced menus with the right amount of protein and carbohydrates and not too much sugar,” said Nickel, who noted that daily requirements for Vitamin C and calcium are also checked. Food, which is bought in bulk for cost effectiveness, comes from a number of sources in the area. Lititz Meals on Wheels is a ministry of Lititz COB. Nickel said he is thrilled to work in a facility with a walk-in refrigerator and freezer. “Joanne Nolt is director of food services at the church, and we get along great,” said Nickel. “She’s wonderful.” Generally, Nickel provides the church with a yearly report on the ministry, but this year he and pastor Eric Landram discussed COVID19 restrictions with regard to Meals on Wheels. “We have not stopped,” said Nickel. “We plan to keep going.” He added, “People are hungry. Lititz is the kind of community that wants to take care of its own.” Readers who want to know more about the ministry may visit https://lititzcob.org/community -life/meals-on-wheels. Those who wish to volunteer may call 717626-2500.

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2020? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized. Lancaster County author Kim Kluxen Meredith recently published her first children’s book, “Henri’s Home,” about a hermit crab and his Jersey shore family.

crab and his family came into my head,” said Meredith, who told her friend Kathy Young the story while confessing, “But I cannot draw.” Young suggested Madenspacher as illustrator. The author and artist met once before the pandemic arrived, and Madenspacher showed Meredith samples of her work. “We hit it off right away. I knew she would be the right person,” recalled Meredith, who requested watercolors for a story that took place at the beach. For the next several months the pair communicated online as Meredith tweaked the story. “I would send her the text from a page, and she would interpret it so beautifully,” said Meredith. “It was a godsend that we were partnered together.” “Henri’s Home” is the story of a hermit crab who lives with his family under a fishing pier. The tale sets the stage for Henri’s “growing” experience as he and his sister and parents scavenge along the shoreline, duck predator seagulls, and play together. When Henri outgrows his shell, a new one is found, but as he adjusts to his larger home, a mishap occurs that separates Henri from his pier. His adventure gives him and the reader an opportunity to meet many ocean creatures and learn how they live as Henri endeavors to find his family again. The book, which features more than 40 of Madenspacher’s drawings, was formatted by Ashley Reinhard and printed by Yurchak Printing in Landisville. Originally from upstate New York, Meredith worked as a Spanish teacher and a paralegal before moving to Lancaster with her first husband David Kluxen. When their children were preteens, David died as a
might be going through a similar experience. Meredith has conducted workshops and given talks based on the book. Meredith describes her second book, “Ocean Whispers,” published in 2018, as a gift book. It was based on a summer 2017 beach trip where each morning for 42 mornings, she picked up a shell and wrote a corresponding message to go with it in her blog, calling the series “The Daily Shell.” Meredith brought the writing together with her seashell photos to create a book that was sold in shops in Ocean City

The community Christmas tree will be lit all three nights. Food and beverages will not be offered this year. Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster will celebrate 13 years of spreading holiday cheer through alternative giving on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held virtually due to the pandemic. To date, Gifts That Give Hope has raised over $300,000 for a variety of charitable organizations based in Lancaster and those working around the world. The fair will consist of 30 local and global nonprofit organizations that carry out a range of humanitarian efforts. Each nonprofit will have a donation-based gift for shoppers to purchase in honor of friends and family members on their holiday gift list. The goal of the gift fair is to encourage the generous spirit of the giving season down a more mindful path via alternative giving. Rooted in compassion, alternative giving helps people give threefold by showing friends and family they care about them with a gift, by supporting organizations that contribute positively to the social landscape, and by combating the environmental impact of consumerism. Each nonprofit at the fair will offer one undesignated gift that allows shoppers to contribute a custom donation that will support its general mission. Upon checkout, shoppers will receive a gift insert and card, which will be mailed to their home in time for the holiday season. For more information, including a list of the participating nonprofits, readers may visit www.giftsthatgive hope.org/lancaster.

Warriors Fall Sports Wrap
Warriors finished second in Section One with a 7-3 mark, missing out on the condensed L-L playoffs despite being the only Section One team to knock off eventual league champ Penn Manor. The final COVID push came with the announcement of the District 3-3A bracket. Warwick posted a solid 9-3 overall record that slotted them eighth in the final District 3-3A rankings, but the Lady Warriors were bounced from the District 3 bracket anyway. As per the PIAA agreement, District 3 and 7 are combined into a sub-region for the PIAA tournament; most years that is not an issue, but in a COVID year that meant the eighth and final spot went to District 7 champ State College, leaving Warwick on the outside looking in. “I am very proud of our team this year. They fought very hard all season,” said head coach Bob Derr. “For us to go 7-3 in section play and 9-3

overall is amazing. All the credit goes to the girls. They trained and worked hard and just believed in themselves and the concept of team. It takes everyone working together to reach their goals and play as a team.” A week after the field hockey team had its season prematurely ended, the soccer-playing Lady Warriors experienced a similar fate. Thanks to a five-game run that closed out the regular season, Warwick’s 6-3-2 overall record was just enough to get the Lady Warriors into the District 3-4A playoffs. “I’m proud of my players for the season they had,” said head coach Wendell Hannaford. “The start of the year we weren’t necessarily getting the results we wanted. The girls knew how good they were and how successful we could be. They worked hard, trained well, and went on a huge five-game win streak that got us into districts.” Unfortunately, that district berth came with a spike in COVID cases at the school forcing the Lady Warriors to withdraw from the District 3-4A bracket before ever stepping foot on the postseason pitch. The forced withdraw left Hannaford disappointed. “The end of the season was tough. There’s really no other way to put it. It’s still a bit raw and fresh, but in time, the girls will be able to look back on the season and be proud of what they accomplished. It’s important we remember to be grateful for getting as much of the season in as we did.” The third and final Warrior squad to fall victim to COVID was the football team. The gridiron version of the Warriors was able to finish one

playoff game before things ended with the 14-12 semifinal victory over New Oxford capping an 8-1 2020 record. A week later, the season was over as was the shot at the team’s first-ever District 3-5A title. Despite the cruel ending to the season, the Warriors were able to rack up a perfect 7-0 regular season, giving Warwick their first solo section title in over 40 years. The undefeated regular season also included two important milestones, with the program surpassing 400 wins and head coach Bob Locker eclipsing 100 career wins. CROSS-COUNTRY The cross-country team narrowly missed COVID-related issues, allowing Anna Martin and Ella Hartel to take part in the PIAA-3A Championship race. Martin, a senior, posted the 21st best time (20:02) while Hartel, a freshman, finished 26 seconds and 12 places later. The pair led the Lady Warriors to a 7-3 regular season finish that ended with Warwick nipping McCaskey, 62-63, in the L-L Championship Race to claim the girls’ team title. Martin finished second in that race with Hartel taking sixth. Grace Rudder (13th), Sidoney Freeman (16th) and Alexa Wenger (25th) rounded out the championship team for the Lady Warriors. Between the L-L and PIAA championships, the Lady Warriors took part in the District 3-3A championship. There they finished second to Northeastern with Martin earning her PIAA bid with a seventh-place finish. Hartel claimed her PIAA spot with a 13th-place run. On the boys’ side, JH Mertz repped the Warriors in the District 3-3A Championship Race with the junior wrapping up his season with a 65th-place finish. Mertz earned his district berth with a 25th-place finish at the L-L championship with Jake Forgione just missing out after finishing 30th. VOLLEYBALL “We had a great season,” said first-year girls’ volleyball head coach Megan Obetz, adding, “It can be attributed to the attitudes of these amazing young ladies. They made
coaching in a pandemic an amazing experience.” Warwick opened with two straight wins but alternated wins and losses from there, leading to a 7-6 campaign. The result was a third-place finish in the Section One standings and a 15th-place finish in the final District 3-4A rankings. Obetz looked back on her first season as a positive one. “I was proud of my team’s resilience in the face of many challenges and uncertainties,” the coach stated. “I was also inspired by their passion for the sport and their drive to get better in each practice and game. Finally, the senior leadership inspired our young players to take pride in the program in a way that will help us countless years to come.” GOLF The golf team ripped through the 2020 season, posting a 16-4 mark with all four losses coming at the hands of eventual league champ Manheim Township. The season came to an official close on Sept. 12 when six Warriors traveled to Meadia Heights Golf Club for the L-L Championship. Zach Stoyer just missed the district cut, finishing in a five-way tie for 18th place, leaving him as the first district alternate. Tyson Mitchell was also part of the five-player logjam, with his season ending as the third district alternate. Brant Bomberger (T-26th), Connor Evans (49th), Nick Reedy (55th) and Brayden Gregory (63rd) were the remaining Warriors at Meadia Heights. TENNIS The girls’ tennis team posted a mild rebound from an 0-3 start, finishing with a 3-5 mark. “The team was enthusiastic as we made the best of an unusual situation, to say the least,” said head coach Ron Wanner, “and we continued to improve as the season progressed. With much of the team returning next year, we’re looking forward to a competitive season in 2021.” BOYS’ SOCCER Most would not consider a 4-8-1 season a success, but Matthew Wagner sees things differently. Wagner, the boys’ soccer coach at
Warwick, looks back on the 2020 season as a building one for his Warriors. “If you look at results, one may say that it was a ‘down’ year,” said Wagner. “We came into the season having to replace seven key players from the year before.” Wagner mentioned his team’s improvement over the season while also mentioning their growth as a team. “This team showed that, and the coaches couldn’t be more proud. Specifically, the team showed effort, grit and, most importantly perseverance. At the end of the season, we have a good base of young players who are excited about next year.” Most would not consider a 4-8-1 season a success, but Matthew Wagner sees things differently. Sheetz To Offer Free Coffee For The Holidays
R066241
It is not often that a high school sports season can be summed up in one word, but 2020 is not a normal anything. And the one word that perfectly sums up the fall high school sports season in 2020 is ... COVID. From the fear and worry about a canceled season over the summer leading into a condensed regular season that was chopped apart with various postponements and outright cancellations. The 2020 fall season was like no other. Need proof? Look no further than the three Warrior programs that navigated the crazy regular season with enough success to land in the also condensed district playoffs only to have COVID prematurely end their season. Two of those three teams had their playoff hopes dashed without stepping between the lines with the field hockey team the first to suffer through the experience. The Lady
Sheetz has announced a new holiday coffee program to keep customers and employees safe this holiday season. To maintain social distancing as the pandemic continues, Sheetz will offer customers one free self-serve coffee every week during December and January. Available at all of Sheetz’s 614 store locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Vir-
ginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio, the program officially launched on Black Friday, Nov. 27, and the free coffee offer will be uploaded to each MySheetz Card holder’s account each Friday in the months of December and January until Friday, Jan. 22, 2021. Each coffee will be redeemable for one week after it is uploaded to the cardholder’s account.
In previous years, Sheetz celebrated the holidays by offering customers a free cup of freshly brewed coffee on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. To eliminate large crowds and gatherings at its stores, Sheetz has implemented this special holiday coffee program. All Sheetz locations are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Journey To Bethlehem Soldiers On BY ANN MEAD ASH
Last year, organizers of Journey to Bethlehem, an annual fundraiser for Woodcrest Retreat, changed the script a little by having participants meet up with a Roman guard on the journey. This year, a few more changes are planned. Some of those changes are related to COVID-19 restrictions, but others are designed to enhance the experience for those who attend. Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to the stable where Christ was born. The 10th annual event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 11 and 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 12 and 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and
then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ child in the manger. Adam Fox, summer camp director at Woodcrest Retreat, noted that the final stop, which in past years included a movie, will now be a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men. “In the final scene, the wise men … have just discovered a sign in the stars,” explained Fox. “They will debate ... whether they should risk a long dangerous journey of many months through the desert to see this king. In the end, they decide it’s worth it because the king is worth it.” To stay within COVID-19 limitations for buildings, organizers ask that those who wish to attend register for a particular time slot by visiting www.wood crestretreat.org. main page can be used to register. Walk-ins will be accepted as well, but they may have to wait longer to start the journey. Instead of a wagon ride to the first scene, school buses will be utilized, and families will be seated together. According to Fox, during the 2019 Journey to Bethlehem, the organization set a Saturday night attendance record. More than 19,000 people have attended over the nine years the event has been held, and organizers hope to hit 20,000 this year. The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4
to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a family price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household. All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,400 children each year. Readers who have questions may call 717-738-2233. In the case of inclement weather, those planning to attend Journey to Bethlehem should check the aforementioned website for information.
Neighbors Group Plans Meeting Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church of the Brethren, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Alisha Shuman will speak on “A Reflection in the Mirror,” about taking a look at oneself through the lens of the Word. Alisha and her husband, Josh, live in the Ephrata area and have four children. In addition to her role as wife and mom in the home, she is an online wellness coach and a parttime administrative assistant and group fitness instructor at ACE Dance & Fitness Academy. The Shumans attend Church of the Word International in Landisville, where Alisha helps in the children’s ministry and she and Josh serve as the youth and young adult
pastors. Classes are provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-3612613 or Veronica at 717626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule. The church will provide a special area for those wishing to social distance and/or wear masks.
