New Year’s Day Ride To Support Local Veterans Schreiber Center Completes Portico, Plans Expansion
By Chelsea Peifer
Beautiful weather with temperatures in the 50s graced last year’s New Year’s Day charity motorcycle ride along the Susquehanna River, and organizers are crossing their fingers for more of the same this time around. “Last year we raised over $35,000, and it was our biggest year for the amount of money raised. That brings our total for the 10 years we’ve had this ride to over $160,000 that we’ve raised for veterans,” stated organizer Tyler Stumpf. Billy Hecht, who started the event with Stumpf and some other friends, emphasized that 100% of proceeds from the event go toward helping veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, with no overhead or administrative costs. The 11th annual New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the See New Year’s Day Ride pg 2

Mindy Lapp, Jack Herr, and Sean High, founders of Ease the Burden (ETB), have created a brochure to help county residents understand the mission of the organization. “This is a flowchart we made to make it simple for people,” explained Lapp. “It’s a way to fund needs in the Lancaster community by filling in the gaps that might not necessarily be covered by most organizations,” added Herr. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster Countybased provider of pediatric therapy services throughout central Pennsylvania, celebrated the renovation of the front entrance of its building, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, with a ribbon-cutting event under the new portico on Nov. 14. Schreiber leaders and supporters gathered for the event, which was planned primarily to thank the community for supporting the project. Donors who contributed to the project and attended the ribbon-cutting event included Sally Buckwalter, Mark Simeral, and Rick and Nancy Price. so lucky, depending on the weather honoree after the ride. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. A silent auction will feature plenty of motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and other items, including a T-shirt quilt created by TLC-Quilting. Another fun tradition is the presentation of a plaque to the individual who travels the farthest to participate in the ride. Motorcyclists have come from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and beyond in past years. The winner of last year’s plaque rode from his home north of the Poconos. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. People are also welcome to pay for admission to the meal and after-ride festivities. Businesses interested in making a contribution toward the fundraiser for veterans may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197.

Approximately 475 bikes rode in last year’s event. One tradition the ride has maintained through the years is the naming of one rider as “Baby New Year,” who must ride the first mile dressed in a baby costume. That rider has the honor of selecting next year’s Baby New Year. “This year we have our first female Baby New Year,” Stumpf noted. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters, the 2019 Baby New Year, relegated the role to Teresa Ardini of Manheim for 2020. Ardini is creating her own costume and will announce next year’s lucky - or not

have the personnel to screen requests and distribute funds appropriately. These organizations would submit grant requests to ETB. “(The organizations) find the need, (do an intake,) and submit the request to us,” said High. “Someone might not be able to pay their rent, and (they) come to a church for help,” said High. “They may not have the funds, but we could bridge that gap.” Lapp agreed, adding, “We want to connect churches and ministries to partner with us to get needs met.” High went on to explain that ETB is based on the Old Testament story of Joseph, who filled the grain bins during the years of plenty. “When the famine hit, the grain bins were full,” he said. “That is our concept. We
giving them $500 in cash,” said High. “Ten years later, they are U.S. citizens and homeowners, and he is (working as) a visiting nurse because of that $500.” ETB founders want area residents to know that the grain bin supplies are here for them. “The emphasis is on grassroots … local,” said Herr. “Any donations to Ease the Burden stay here in Lancaster County.” Lapp added that the trio will be working to raise funds. “There are lots of ways to fill the grain bin,” she said. “It’s about relationships, but we hope to hold events, and we hope individuals will see the need and feel led to give,” she said, adding that ETB is already working with small businesses. ETB has a website that offers information about the mission and how the organization works and shares opportunities to donate. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.ETBLancaster.org.

ETB was founded to help county residents who do not need help under normal circumstances, but who have come up against a hardship. “We are here for the working class who maybe by a few hundred dollars a year don’t qualify for help,” said Lapp. Hardships might include health care expenses, housing problems, or other expenses that could squeeze an individual or a family to the breaking point. “This is for the family that is doing everything right,” explained Lapp. “They’re not living beyond their means … (but) they are one furnace breaking down or alternator failing from going under.” To ease the burdens of those in need, ETB founders plan to form partnerships with churches and nonprofit organizations that know the needs of the local community and
will raise funds to fill the grain bin, and we will have resources there.” High went on to say that when a partner organization finds a need and submits a grant request, ETB should be able to react quickly. ETB founders were inspired by occurrences at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand, where High and Herr attend. The first involved a young couple. When the husband died of cancer, the wife was left with significant medical bills and funeral expenses. Church members spoke to the hospital and funeral home before raising the necessary funds to relieve the widow of the burden. The second situation involved an immigrant couple from Africa. The husband and wife were working and he was attending school, but they were close to having to leave the country because of financial issues. “Someone in the church responded by

Schreiber raised all the money from private sources. The work was completed in August. The project sets the stage for Schreiber’s next major construction project: a $6 million, three-story expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space to the current facility. “These are exciting times at Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “We are seeing more kids come through our doors every day, and thanks to many generous people in our community, we have been able to make some modifications to the center to try and keep up with the demand. But we are literally out of space. We need to expand, and we’re confident the community will rally behind us again so that we have the space we need to serve every family that needs us.”
The project will create space and convert current administrative offices into new areas for therapy. The new construction will feature an expanded physical therapy department that will include a treatment suite with state-of-the-art concussion protocol and traumatic brain injury therapies. A new eco-friendly therapy garden will be built next to the expanded building. Schreiber is in the process of obtaining the necessary municipal approvals to begin construction. A capital campaign is expected to begin in 2020. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development is a nonprofit organization that strives to offer the finest in innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults. Eck noted that while LDHL has offered interest-free loans to college students from Lancaster County for nearly 60 years, this is the first time it has created a lending program for students attending technical or trade schools. To ease into the TOTE Loan Program, interest-free loans will initially be available to students who will attend the 12-month or 18-month Practical Nursing or 16-month Automotive Technology Specialized Associate Degree programs at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). The funding for the loans came from the estate of E. Ann Klein, who died in 2007. Klein had distributed funds to several

Loan Program from pg 1 organizations, with the stipulation that they receive interest payments from the invested money for the first 10 years. Now that the time has expired, LDHL has received the principal, and the resulting cash in hand will allow the funding of loans. When deciding how to use the bequest, the LDHL board looked at Klein’s life for inspiration. Klein was the daughter of one of the owners who turned New Holland Machine Company into a thriving business. She held a pilot’s license and had an interest in antique cars. According to the Elizabethtown Historical Society, Klein and her husband had more than 55 antique automobiles stored in Elizabethtown. When Klein was unable to source tires and other parts to restore her vehicles, she launched the Universal Tire Company and later Klein Kars. LDHL expects to receive applications from adults who have already entered the workforce and now want to change careers or to enhance their skills, Eck said. “We’re learning how big of an audience there is (for this),” she added. Unlike the existing college loan program, which has firm deadlines and mails checks every year on Aug. 1, the TOTE Loan Program will have a rolling application process. Funds will be disbursed in time for new sessions at the LCCTC. Like the college loan program, the Student Aid Report (SAR) generated after the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be used to determine the size of a TOTE loan. Borrowers will also need co-signers for the loans, and repayment will begin six months after the recipient graduates or leaves school. Individuals who are interested in learning more and applying can do so at https://lancdollars.org/tote-loan. Those with questions about the new program may call the LDHL office at 717-397-7920 or email info@lancdollars.org.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas That Leave Lasting Impressions
T
radition is a hallmark of the holiday season. Religious services, family gatherings and trips to see Santa Claus are just a few of the many traditions people adhere to during the holiday season. Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove to be elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hourglass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones this holiday season.
Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books from popular websites. Recipients simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their books are ready to be downloaded to their devices. Booksellers at the local bookstore are also a great resource to tap, as they read widely themselves and are familiar with other readers’ favorites as well as new releases.
Experiences: A 2017 survey by the global research firm NPD Group found that roughly 40 percent of holiday shoppers planned to give experiences as gifts. Experience gifts open up a host of possibilities for last-minute shoppers stuck on what to give those loved ones who seemingly have it all. Options abound, including day trips, theater tickets, amusement park passes and tickets to concerts and sporting events. Experience gifts are also a great way to support local businesses.
Streaming service subscriptions: Many people are cutting the cord with their cable companies in favor of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Subscriptions to such services can make ideal and affordable holiday gifts. A six-month or yearlong subscription likely won’t break shoppers’ budgets and will provide months of entertainment to loved ones. Last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever, especially for shoppers willing to think outside the box.
Food/beverage: Television channels such as The Food Network have changed the way many people look at food. When gifting the family foodie, last-minute shoppers may not need to look further than the latest hotspot restaurant or specialty grocery store for the perfect gift. Take them out for a night on the town or give a gift card they can use at their convenience. The craft beer boom has created a host of devoted and knowledgeable beer drinkers, so a gift card or growler from a local craft brewery is sure to please people who love hoisting frosty pints.

How Small Businesses Improve The Consumer Experience
W
hen shopping this holiday season, keep in mind that “shopping small” not only more. As a result, large companies have less incentive to work one-on-one with customhelps the local community but that it can also mean a more pleasant experi- ers. Small businesses are not beholden to scale, which gives them the flexibility to offer ence for you too. While small businesses may not have the marketing muscle more unique products, including customized items. to compete with large corporations, many small businesses have perfected the art of providing top-notch experiences for their customers by embracing several strategies that make consumers feel appreciated.
■
Improved customer service
Nearly every consumer has had to contact a retailer or service provider regarding a purchase at one point or another. Contacting a large corporation can be a difficult experience for consumers, who often must answer several telephone prompts before they can be connected to a human being. Small businesses typically do not ask customers to clear such hurdles before they can get in touch with an actual person. That makes the process of contacting customer service less time-consuming and aggravating and more enjoyable for customers.
■ Responses
Small businesses are in better position to respond to negative experiences or reviews, particularly online reviews, because they have fewer customers than large companies that field hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints per day. Studies have shown that customers appreciate responses from businesses they patronize. A 2018 online reviews survey from Review Trackers found that 53 percent of consumers expect a response to negative reviews within a week of posting their reviews and are disappointed when they do not receive a response. Unfortunately, the same survey found that 63 percent of reviewers have never received a response to a review. Small businesses are in a unique position to respond to online reviews, and providing such responses can turn a potentially negative consumer experience into a positive one. What’s more, because online reviews and responses are public, prospective customers can read a company’s response and know that owners want their customers to have as positive an experience as possible.
■ Personalization
Many large companies won’t customize their products, as their financial success is typically rooted in how effectively they can scale to thousands of customers per day, if not

waste over time, and such items make great stocking stuffers. Shoppers also can look for ecofriendly gift items made from recycled materials, which run the gamut from home furnishings to calendars to clothing. Shop local - and forgo shopping bags. Shipping products across the country can involve a large expenditure of gas and packaging waste. Shopping locally not only supports people in the community, it also makes it easy to use reusable bags or not use a bag at all. Several local communities also have a variety of shops in a concentrated area, so walking from store to store can also help reduce shoppers’ carbon footprint. Reuse holiday-specific items. Many people only use gift wrap, gift boxes and gift bags during the holiday season. Such items are often times discarded after Christmas morning. But these items can be reused to cut back on holiday waste. Reusing wrapping paper from year to year can be especially beneficial to the environment. That’s because wrapping paper tends to be dyed or laminated, and many wrapping papers contain non-paper additives that cannot be recycled. Reusing wrapping paper, purchasing only recyclable paper or wrapping gifts in old newspapers or magazines can help holiday celebrants reduce their carbon footprints. Prepare less food and donate any leftovers. The Worldwatch Institute notes that, during the holiday season, celebrants generate three times as much food waste as they do during other times of the year. Large family meals are a tradition of the holiday season, but hosts who routinely find themselves discarding leftovers can plan on preparing less food this year. Consider how much guests are likely to eat and plan meals accordingly instead of buying enough food to feed a small army. Donate leftovers to nearby shelters so nothing goes to waste. Recycle live Christmas trees. Local residents can explore options for recycling live Christmas trees when it’s time to take down the decorations after the holidays. For example, Lancaster County Central Park holds an annual Christmas tree recycling operation. Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation employees grind Christmas trees into free mulch for public pickup. There is a nominal suggested donation per tree, with the funds going toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. According to park officials, residents
drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acidloving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and
many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit
www.lancastercountyparks. org. Local residents may contact their municipal office for more information about other programs in their community.

Local and regional artists will have even more display space at this year’s Christmas Folk Art Show, as the Manheim Historical Society has invited exhibitors to expand throughout the entire first floor of the Manheim Historical Society Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim, where the annual event takes place. This year’s event is scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. Admission is free, and complimentary refreshments will be available. Woodcarver Doug Shaw, who has participated in the event since its inception more than two decades ago, explained that in the past artists were set up in the upstairs portion of the station. Now displays will extend into the lower part of the building that originally functioned as the men’s and women’s waiting rooms and ticket office in the historic station. “Architecturally, the men’s and ladies’ waiting rooms are the same; it’s just that there were spittoons on the men’s side,” noted Shaw with a laugh. In the ticket office, visitors will be able to see original accoutrements from
an old Manheim schoolhouse, as well as train station memorabilia on the walls. Local author Dennis Denenberg will be on hand to sell and autograph copies of his book, “50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet!” Denenberg co-authored the book with Lorraine Roscoe, and it was a 2006 Notable Children’s Trade Book. A portion of proceeds from book sales that weekend will be donated to the historical society. In addition to Shaw, the exhibitors and their crafts will include Cynthia Baker, handwoven textiles, felt hats, and wool applique; Dan Barthold, pen and ink illustrations; Mike Brown, paper mache and chalkware folk art; Madeline Erickson, German stars and feather trees; Bob and Sally Hughes, River Rat Pottery; P.J. Rankin Hults, folk painted paper cutting; Karen Hurd, traditional tin work; Jim Murphy, painted furniture; Judy Perilstein, handcrafted vintage antique button jewelry; Lee Pfoutz, primitive wild fowl carvings; and Lynn Taylor, Kingston Pottery and Fine Ceramics. Many of the artists have devoted fans and followers from well beyond the central Pennsylvania area, and the show draws visitors from numerous states.

With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox - including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving
curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.
